Childress on Tomlinson: 'We'll have to show him what his role will be"
Will they sign him? You can bet that question wafted through minds all across the nation when word leaked that former all-pro running back LaDainian Tomlinson was expected to visit the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday. As for the answer, I tried getting it today from Vikings coach Brad Childress, who was attending Pro Day at the University of Minnesota to eyeball prospective NFL draft picks.
BS: His career is his resume in the case of LaDainian Tomlinson. Are you bringing him in with the hope of signing him, or do you need to learn something you don't already know?
BC: I think probably he's coming in touching and tasting us, and we're doing the same thing to see where his mind is at. I had a great conversation with him (Tuesday). I interrupted him on the golf course. I was looking out my window, and I said, "Well, I can't lie to you. It's not a tropical paradise here or anything like that." I said, "That's why we have a roof on the place." But it's a little bit of both. Does the situation fit him? I'm sure he wants to know what our vision is for him. And then our sense for him is: Will he fit from a mind-set standpoint, from a physical standpoint, from a system standpoint? And all along, you talk to the people who are able to allay any fears you have. You talk to a guy like Ben Leber, who was a pro teammate of his (in San Diego). Steve Hutchinson and he have the same agent. They came out at the same time, in the same year.
BS: The fact that he's coming in should be encouraging to you because he knows he's not coming in to be the starter. Is that a fair thing to say: He pretty much knows the role because you lost the guy who had the role last year. (Adrian Peterson's backup, Chester Taylor, signed last week with the Chicago Bears, creating an opening for a third-down and fill-in back.)
BC: I would think he knows that, but I always want to over-communicate clarity. So we won't hopscotch around that. We'll have to show him what his role will be.
BS: Now did you have Brett Favre in on a three-way conversation or listening in so he knows you're trying to sign top players to get him back, too?
BC: I don't know if that's a big part of the equation. He's fully aware, as is Bus (Cook, Favre's agent), that being one of those final four (playoff) teams, your activity (in free agency) was going to be limited. It's still about getting good pieces of the puzzle and pieces that fit our situation.
BS: Tomlinson doesn't fumble much — just eight in his career. Does that, in some way, go into your thinking, and that maybe he can help Adrian Peterson not fumble as much? Or maybe help tutor Peterson in some areas?
BC: That's not in the equation. We're kind of measuring him more as a football player, and as a person, as a man, as a competitor. And how much he has left to be able to contribute to this team.
BS: From what I've heard, he's a great team leader and a class act. That doesn't change (when a player's skills diminish). And that has to be a big plus in what you do, I would think.
BC: I go right back to Day One: Good people that are good football players — that's how we keep trying to add people to this football team. We have to know something about their background. We're not going to get seduced by somebody's athleticism and bring in a bad person. He's a tremendous human being, by all accounts.
BS: And you're satisfied he still can play, that maybe he's still not elite, but he's still one heck of a back.
BC: Well, you guys get to use the adjectives.
BS: Which one would you use?
BC: Good football player that's a good person. I know that's a little bit too vanilla for you, but he really is. When you look at the evidence, when you look at his tape, his resume, he's still got a decent amount of squirt and a very good feel in the hole.
BS: Has (recently released Philadelphia Eagles back) Brian Westbrook been ruled out because of the concussion issue (two last season), or is he still in the mix?
BC: He's still out there. He hasn't retired.
BS: Is he in the mix for you to consider?
BC: Everyone who hasn't been picked up is out there for us to consider. And we've got grades on all those guys.
BS: Are you considering him? Maybe I should ask it that way.
BC: We're considering LaDainian, who's coming in the door right now. I'm kind of a one-day-at-a-time guy.
BS: If it's not Tomlinson or anyone else (available as a free agent), are you happy with what Percy Harvin can do as a third-down back and what Albert Young can do to fill a need?
BC: None of it takes anything away from Albert Young. Obviously, with Chester leaving, there's a lot of things that Albert brings to the table that are huge plusses. He's kind of grown and matured in the system. When he did get a chance to get in the game, he gave a nice accounting of himself. I think Albert Young is going to be a good football player.

Given how much Childress talked about Tomlison, it sure gives you the impression that he'll be a Vikings soon.
Childress generally doesn't like to talk a lot about guys who aren't under contract.

Need a meh answer on your pole
I think he’s a good back and I think he’ll do something for the team, but I don’t think this is an earth shattering move by any means. He’s right up there with Rhys-Davies in my consideration as to an impact player.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Nice Read.
Thanks for forwarding on.
Brett Favre is the Greatest QB in NFL History!
Brett Favre will be back in 2010, 100% Guaranteed!
It's all good
Good people that are good football players playing good football for good fans. Now all we need is a good stadium and we’ll be good to go.
wow going to charge you $50 for inapropriate repitition of the word good.

Sansevere wants to make Harvin #2 back-He's nuts!
Sansever writes: (and pardon my copy and pasting a repeat comment) Harvin is better suited to play Chesters role. I have one thing to say "is Bob out of his mind?"
Hey Bob. Who is our other option in the slot that can be the threat in multiple ways Harvin is?
Harvin isn’t any more a blocker than LT. At least LT knows something about it. Sure. put Harvin there and watch how long his carreer lasts. Harvin is the ultimate "slot machine" and left there wil have a long carreer. When he was given the ball in too many rushing attempts Percy would get hurt.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Percy. I love to see them sneak him the ball on the run. But, I was so impressed by what he apparently picked up from Chris Carter tutoring, why would you take miles off a good car by getting it beat up. I hope they keep Percy in the slot, toss in more wildcat options. Especially if T-Jax is still around. Let Jax come in for 8-10 wildcat plays. Get some plays out of Jax for his paycheck Now, AD,LT and Percy with Jax now playing a one option pass play, then TJ can tuck it and run if it isn’t there. Shoot, we gave up a couple picks for this carreer backup QB, let him run the dang ball, have LT and percy run short routes and then a delay action counter handoff to AD, Percy slides around to give the illusion of a reverse and hit LT running an out pattern, fake the long ball to Barrian or Rice and hand it off to Percy on a modified reverse.
Jeez. The options are scary if Chilly will open up that playbook. and lets BF change plays at the line. Better yet, let BF call all the plays.
But please, don’t put Harvin in as a set back unless it is absolutely need

Has anyone asked AD what he thinks?
As Grime and Frost correctly said, LT is no longer a big impact guy; best case scenario (in terms of on the field) output is a solid receiving and decent blocking back who can carry about 5 times a game to reduce the load on Adrian. But is that minor on-the-field impact worth it if:
1) LT’s EGO (it is big, by all accounts) starts b*tching about touches?
2) Say AD fumbles a couple of times early in the season, but is producing great. Will fans and the media start crying for Chilly to go conservative and give it to LT to ball, just to limit fumbles, at the expense of giving the best RB in football the rock? Will this create more pressure on AD about the fumbles?
3) How much of this is about winning games vs. how much is this about selling tickets?
I’m concerned about all these things. We’ll see what happens, but I sure as heck wish we still had Chester. The best thing I can say about this is that this probably idicates that Favre IS coming back, since LT said “he wants to go somewhere with an established QB who gives the team a chance to win a SuperBowl.”
Either that or no one else wants LT!
We’ll see, but I bet he embraces the opportunity to play with Tomlinson.

AD is a pretty selfless player
He didn’t mind this year when we went from a run centric offense to a much more pass friendly one. It limited his carries, screwed up his line blocking and people actually at the end of the year no longer thought he was the best back in the business. I didn’t hear one word out of the man. LT on the other hand has in the past vocally expressed his disatisfaction with issues pertaining to his team and just in general. That’s really the only knock I have against the guy. Also, I’m not sure that his running style is different enough from AD’s to make a difference in how defenses scheme (other than his ability to catch passes and not fumble of course.)

Options...
I will be mostly excited to sign him because of his experience…. I do not think he’ll make a huge impact, but hopefully he can be clutch in certain situations. I won’t be disappointed to see him not come our way.. I am a little on the edge about it. I wouldn’t mind seein gmore Albert Young time since the coaches seem to have some confidence in him. But, sometimes, experience is a really big factor. — I think we need an experienced 3rd down-option….
Previous seasons, it seems that the majority of 3rd down conversions were done by C. Taylor & P. Harvin. —
That being sad, I don’t think LT’s ego would need to always be in-check… I think he’d understand, “ya that was me who just made that play that kept this offensive series going…”…..
Being over 30, I can’t imagine him being to concerned about being a back-up back. It’ll extend his career…. Or so one would think.
There's a VAST GULF between hope, and certainty
Personally, I like hedging my bets.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
