Jimmy Kennedy, Buffalo Bill?

Apparently Jimmy Kennedy is meeting with the Bills about signing on as a nose tackle in their new look 3-4 defense. Our friends over at Buffalo Rumbings have an article up about it.

Kennedy had a funny note this past season. He was a highly regarded DT out of Penn State in the same draft Minnesota drafted Kevin Williams (and the infamous draft where they waited too long for their pick). He said he thought Minnesota was going to draft him (he ended up going #12). I think we can all agree things turned out okay with KWill.

Anyway, if he does sign, it would be a fairly significant blow to their DT depth.

We need better depth at DT regardless of whether Kennedy leaves or not. Got to plan ahead for Pat leaving after the season. Probably a first or second round need if we don’t do something in FA.

Now that would stink

Losing a solid back up and a man who at least I thought could take over for Pat after he left is going to leave a hole…

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

If he leaves

we still have Evans, Guion and the draft….someone will have to step up.

Funny thing is

those Bills are pretty excited about picking him up. Their NT must really suck.

Haha one of them came over to APC a while back asking about transitioning to the 3-4 defense, and he basically told us they don’t have one. I think their biggest DL is like 310 or something, which won’t cut it as a NT.

Yeah, can’t you just see their coaches doing their offseason meetings? “Here’s what we’re going to do, guys, we’re going to copy every other team in our division and transition to a 3-4, and JIMMY KENNEDY’S going to take us there!”

by jianfu on Mar 11, 2010 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

lol sounds like a super plan!

No wonder the fans in Buffalo seem so happy. If I were them just getting a guy from a winning team might seem like a win.

My father in law

lives in Buffalo (Amherst really) and is a huge Bills fan….I feel his pain.

by KC612 on Mar 12, 2010 7:36 AM CST up reply actions

We need him

He will get a lot of playing time here. I think the Vikings will offer Kennedy some good money. I hope he comes back to the Vikings and a chance to win it all.

by medicineball on Mar 11, 2010 9:26 AM CST reply actions

Could be shopping his worth..

I hope to see more Kennedy switching it in with Pat… situations..
Keeping those legs fresh…

by Deek on Mar 11, 2010 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

He did last season

it seemed they switched Kennedy in there quite a bit. And he was pretty solid when he went in. I think he got something like 3 or 4 sacks. Is he starter quality? I don’t know. But NTs just clog space in the 3-4 anyhow, so it may work out for him. If we lose Kennedy, then I definitely see us taking a DT in the first or second, as opposed to right now where I see us grabbing one later on, in the 3rd or 4th.

by Frost on Mar 11, 2010 11:28 AM CST up reply actions

True. If we lose Kennedy, it will hurt.

by medicineball on Mar 11, 2010 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

Once again..

It looks like a reasonable decent back-up goes to a less than average team. Not saying that the Bills are going to be horrible this year, since no one will ever know….. But I wouldn’t doubt the Vikings have a more successful year.

If JK is getting lots of switching in on the D-line, it’s obviously not for playing time reason(s) but for money.

It is all about the Benjamins!

Kennedy already was quoted in the paper that he thought the only reason Pat Williams got paid was because he came here and “got some hot film”. Kennedy was clearly playing for a new contract and hopefully he gets one.

It is obvious that the Vikings did not value him as much as he valued himself. That is why they probably out the high tender on Evans. I have no inkling what Guion can or cannot do but I would like to see him get more snaps this year so we will know for sure.

Remember this name … Linval Joseph DT 6-4 331.

Look for the Vikings to select him in round 2.

Compensation pick

Don’t we get a compensation pick if we lose him? If so I am not too worried.

by Coin on Mar 11, 2010 8:15 PM CST reply actions

No, because we didn’t draft him.

by medicineball on Mar 11, 2010 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

From a Bill's fan's perspective

Kennedy would do a lotfor us. The guy we currently have projected at NT is a 306 pound penetrator named Kyle Williams. Stroud can’t play NT IMO because of his ankle. As to Kennedy he would really help ease the transition to a 3-4 if he can just hold his ground against a double team. And BTW we still miss Phat Pat.

by mob16151 on Mar 12, 2010 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

We understand but you can't have Phat back.

I find it odd to ask a back-up DT who has never played as a 3-4 NT to come and start for a team that has never played the 3-4 defense, but hey. Your the Bills. You guys do it your own way.
We liked Kennedy and wish him well.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 12, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

Aye he's a solid back up behind Phat Pat.

Not sure he’s up to Pat’s level of play but I think he’s got more in his tank than most give him credit for.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

Kennedy wants to start

PFT reports Kennedy wants to start.

I don’t blame him. He has starter talent.

But stay, Jimmy Kennedy! Come back to the Vikings and stay! We will win it all together, and then Pat Williams will retire, and you will become the starter.

If Kennedy signs a new multi-year deal with the Vikings, maybe with an escalator clause that kicks in when he starts a certain number of games, the Vikings can avoid drafting another high-round defensive tackle this year, allowing the Vikings to add depth at another position.

Stay, Jimmy Kennedy! You are a good player and the Vikings need you. Take care, and thank you for all your service to the Vikes over the years. Best of luck and please stay with us.

Edwards is a backup for a reason

He came out the same year as KWill right? I believe he did start for a while but the teams let him go. Here is his career info …

St. Louis Rams

The 6’4", 320 lb. defensive tackle was the first round pick (#12 overall) of the St. Louis Rams in the 2003 NFL Draft. On July 30, 2003, Kennedy signed a 5-year $9 million contract that included a $5 million signing bonus. 2 With two defensive tackles, Ryan Pickett and Damione Lewis, taken in 2001, Kennedy played 13 games but did not make a start his rookie season, and made only 1 tackle, 1 assist, and 1 pass batted.

The following year, Kennedy played in the final 9 games of the season, starting 5 of them. During this time, he posted 16 tackles and one pass defensed. Kennedy started both postseason games where he registered nine tackles and one sack. On January 8, 2005 he recorded two tackles and one sack. He tracked down Matt Hasselbeck for a six-yard loss in the last minute of the fourth quarter of the Rams’ 27-20 win.

By 2005, Kennedy had earned a spot as the Rams’ nose tackle, played in 15 games and started the first 9 games of the season. With a chance to finally play, Kennedy made a respectable 33 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. On September 18, 2005, he posted four tackles with two sacks of Kurt Warner along with first career forced fumble.

In 2006 Kennedy started all 16 games at nose tackle for the Rams for the first time in his career and recorded 39 tackles, one sack, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries

Denver Broncos

Kennedy was traded to the Denver Broncos on June 8, 2007, for a 6th round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. On September 1, 2007, the Broncos released him.

Chicago Bears

On December 11, 2007 the Chicago Bears signed Kennedy and he played in the final three games of the 2007 season, making three tackles. The Bears declined to match the Jacksonville Jaguars’s offer to Kennedy in the offseason.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Kennedy signed a one-year, $655,000 contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 4, 2008. He played six games with the Jaguars, making 5 tackles and a sack before being waived mid-season on November 24, 2008.

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings signed Kennedy on December 3, 2008, to help fill the void created when Pro Bowl defensive tackles Pat Williams and Kevin Williams were suspended, but the NFL could not enforce their punishment after local judges stalled the matter indefinitely. 5 He became a free agent at the conclusion of the 2008 season.

Sorry MM, I know you want to keep the entire roster intact (how any draft picks make the team is a mystery) but Kennedy gets cut before the 2007 season even starts and practically misses the whole year even though not injured, then is picked up in 2008 and let go in the middle of that year before we finally picked him up. Then he leaves us and wants to start? It seems to me that he has an inflated opinion of himself.

I will have to disagree with him becoming an eventual starter for us when PWill retires. I would think that with the deep DT class in this year’s draft we will at least pick up one guy. I do not know what Guion can do but we need to find out this year and Evans is only a backup. I am definitely in the camp of adding a young stud DT to teh mix even if they do resign Kennedy.

I don’t know what is up with Kennedy but the teams must know something.

“Kennedy” I think you mean.

He didn’t live up to his potential. But now he is, or getting close.

Kennedy re-signs!

Kennedy has re-signed with the Vikings

This is great news. It will be terrific to have Kennedy back for the 2010 campaign. I’m looking forward to seeing him and the whole team in action.

by medicineball on Mar 13, 2010 5:34 PM CST reply actions

How great is that.

Having the top 2 DTs from the 2003 draft ( #6 and # 12 picks) on the team for at least two more years. No one can explain Kennedy’s poor play in 2007 but the Viking coaching staff must have seen a fixable weakness. I like having this kind of depth on the bench. Makes me feel better with a 38 year old starter on the line.
I don’t expect any draft choices to start on the D-Line. If they do they will be the most talented rookies to come out in a long time. My thanks to Spielman for getting this deal done and Kennedy for actually having some loyalty to the Vikings.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 14, 2010 9:33 AM CDT up reply actions

No can explain his poor play for his entire career considering where he was drafted

Put me down as seeing this as nothing more than an insurance move against the possible suspensions. Also, the Evans tender falls under this category.

Kennedy is a decent back up. I certainly hope he is not the answer for when PWill leaves.

I expect him to continue to be a backup. His career speaks for itself and I would not put money on him all of a sudden elevating his play to All Pro levels.

Let me say this. If Dan Williams or Jared Odrick was available at #30 then we would seriously have to consider taking either.

by MarkSP18 on Mar 14, 2010 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions

The past is not always prologue. Kennedy really has great talent. I remember wanting us to take Kevin Williams, but I thought it was really close between the two of them. To have them both on the team is really cool. Kennedy will have an opportunity to really shine this season.

I agree about taking Dan Williams at #30, because I have him ranked that high. I don’t have Odrick ranked that high. Odrick is from Penn State like Kennedy. I don’t know why you think one Penn State d-lineman with a lot of talent can never do a good job, when he has done so since he became a Viking, while a rookie d-lineman from the same program, who learned the same things under Joe Paterno, will be ready to go from day one. Kennedy has been through the school of hard knocks, and has learned to play in the NFL, and apply his gifts and talent to the NFL. I think it will take Odrick some time to adjust. Or did Penn State add a really good defensive line coach before Odrick got there?

I have the DTs ranked: Suh, McCoy, Williams, Price, Cody, ……. skipping down several spots….. Odrick. I don’t have Odrick ranked as a first-rounder for the Vikings.

What’s so great about Odrick? Should I be ranking him higher? Thanks.

by medicineball on Mar 14, 2010 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Odrick was All American and Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year like Kennedy

One guy from the same school doing a good job vs another is not a comparison that I would quantify because I do not believe it applies. If that is the case then all WRs from USC must be busts. Oh wait … OK maybe that is not a good analogy :)

I know Kennedy’s pedigree and all I was saying is he has not lived up to his billing yet. I am on board with you in hoping that he has turned the corner, learned the NFL game, matured physically, etc, etc. But I can only go by what he has done which is not close to what KWill has been doing. I will admit he did look good last year at times.

Odrick did very well in college and did well in the Senior Bowl and Combine. That is all I can go by and it is enough for me. If he is a bust then so be it. But looking at what he has done in college makes him worthy of a first round or high second round pick IMO.

He is in the top 5 of most DT rankings. I really cannot say if you should be ranking him higher. All I know is a guy like that would fit very well into the rotation and should be prepared to step in and start in a few years.

The problem I see with picking #30 is we may not get a shot at him at #62. Same thing goes for Weatherspoon or Washington at the LB spot. Or Taylor Mays & Nate Allen at the safety spot.

What do we do if we have Jared Odrick, Dan Williams, Sean Weatherspoon, Daryl Washington, Taylor Mays, Nate Allen, Mike Iupati, Kyle Wilson, & Devin McCourty all on the board when we pick? That is tough.

Personally I think New England will take Odrick at #22. Theyhave to replace Seymour and he is a perfect fit for the 3-4 DE too.
