Is this possible?

My roommate and I were discussing this whole thing about trading future draft picks. I'm a Vikings fan and he's a Browns fan, so you can only imagine the dreams we have. We were talking about the Jets stealing Cromartie for a 3rd rounder next year. This is where the hamster started spinning. The talk around the league is that there may not be a season next year. Some "experts" even give it a 50-50 chance. With that being said, the Jets could be getting Cromartie for an invisible draft pick, if there is no season next year. Furthermore, what's to stop any team from trading away their entire draft? If there's no season next year, then teams really wouldn't be giving up anything. I understand that it's a 50-50 chance, but those are good odds. If a team is in a "win now or never" situation, it seems like a legit gamble to put that team over the top. Imagine if the Vikings traded all their draft for some O-Line and secondary help, won the Super Bowl, and then no next season. It is possible...

Statistically speaking 50-50 is not “good odds”. It would be an ultimate gamble, but I know of one commentor that will likely have this scenario in a fanpost “Mock Draft 9,6” before too long.

i read somewhere

If they were to be a lockout that there will still be a draft next year, there just won’t be any games played come preseason or regular season.

by skolvikes on Mar 12, 2010 10:20 AM CST reply actions

That would make..

No draft for the following year after that.

If there is a complete season of no games…. There would have to be a sesaon of no drafts.
Because the following year, you would not have any way to give out the order of the draft picks.

Draft is a part of the CBA.

Without a CBA ( after March 4,2011) the league can choose any means of holding the draft that they desire. They could use a draw out of the hat, worst records over last ten years, no Superbowl appearances pick first, or any other ways you can dream up.

Lets hope for most superbowl losses.

Exactly- A draft will occur next year.

The draft will occur next year. The contract expires on March 4,2011. Their is talk about moving the draft up to a time prior to that date.
Even without a contract their can be a season next year. Whether or not the current players are a part of that season is yet to be determined.

I see

Then forget the whole thing. This is what I get for discussing this with someone who roots for a team with worse luck than the Vikes.

rights to players

I would assume that if there is a lockout, there will still be a draft. If necessary, the NFL will probably extend exclusive negotiating rights to drafted players for longer than a year.

The 2011 NFL draft will occur and be meaningful. The only issue with it is talent. Many juniors declared this year because after this year there will be a rookie wage scale. Lots of college players wanted to hit the lottery by becoming a high draft pick. A fwe will. The 2011 draft will happen, but won’t be as good overall.

That said, the 2011 quarterback class looks better than 2010’s.

I would also think if the league is in turmoil that year

You won’t get as many under class men trying to get out into the NFL. So it might even be weaker than that.

Here is the TRUTH about the DRAFT

I don’t mean to complicate a fun thread but you should realize that the draft is an illegal labor event under the anti-trust laws of the USA. What makes it legal is the fact that it is authorized under the Collective bargaining agreement. That is why the draft would need to be held prior to the agreement expiring on March 4, 2011.
After that date everything is up for grabs. The draft, lawsuits, lockouts, voluntary work stoppages, boycotts, picket lines, and Great football. I have posted three different times on the labor issue if anyone is interested in learning a little more about it.

Another great post. I didn’t realize that.

by medicineball on Mar 12, 2010 1:20 PM CST up reply actions

By the way, the NFL’s counter-argument would be that every player is an employee of the NFL, not of a specific team. Thus, it would be OK for them to limit free agency, hold drafts, etc. I think they would have a chance at making that argument work, but ultimately, they are walking out on the edge as LLV says.

by medicineball on Mar 12, 2010 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

Well thats interesting.

My understanding is that in the Pat Williams “illegal use of substance” case the NFL is making the legal argument that the players are NOT employees of the NFL. But I thought the issue was that the draft itself limits the players “right to work”. In other words because the draft means that a player can’t shop his services within the league that this was the violation of the anti-trust laws, Interstate commerce clause, or some such law. As I read it it makes them slaves to the NFL Owners. Wow, that sounds illegal doesn’t it.

Yes. I think the NFL is on treacherous ground.

On the one hand, they can say that the NFL’s competition is the Arena League, the CFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, college football, etc. Then it doesn’t matter if the teams within the NFL are restricted from competing by respecting a draft. The NFL is not a monopoly in this view.

On the other hand, if the NFL teams are economic competitors, then the draft, etc, would probably violate various laws.

by medicineball on Mar 12, 2010 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

That would screw them on teh star caps case though...
