Oh God Not This Again, Open Thread
If you haven't already made the connection, this situation with Mr. LT has happened before in vikings history, and that was last year with Mr. Douche-Menzada (i'm sorry housh, you broke my heart). But i am feeling the same kinds of things from last year and with a very similar situation. We though that TJ was most definitely a shoe in tko be a viking, but at last he wasn't (but it worked out for us). All i am saying, please don't get your hopes up, but over the next few days it is going to be hard not to.
So consider this Post an Open Thread for the next few days on the subject of LT and such. LT is the kind of lighting that we wouldn't mind striking us (like the metaphor??).
Ok guys it is official, LT is the biggest douche in the world. Ok maybe i am over reacting but lets get something straight he got caught up in the glitz of NY. He can go suck an apple next year.
Now Let the official courting of Brian Westbrook Begin!!

housh who??
man, i had completely forgotten about that. sidney did such a great job, i am glad it turned out that way. IF, lightning should strike twice, maybe we’ll get lucky twice as well, and if LT signs somewhere else, we may find another diamond-in-the-rough. maybe someone already on our roster. i don’t really want for us to go after westbrook though. he is WAY too injury prone. i do like the job that our front office has done over the past couple of years, so i will put my trust in them.

Yeah
If the lightning does strike us twice, we better hope for Albert Young or even Ian Johnson to step up, much like Sidney did.

Free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson hasn’t found a new team just yet. But as he visits with the Jets, the rumors are swirling that he’s close.
We’ve caught wind of a rumor that Tomlinson will, in fact, sign with the Jets. Although you should file this under “rumor” rather than “report” right now, suffice to say that it’s a strong rumor coming from a good source.
Tomlinson was meeting with the Jets this afternoon, and the New York Daily News reports that Tomlinson is spending another night in town.
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan are trying hard to get Tomlinson, who’s also considering the Vikings, to commit to the Jets, and the indications are that the Jets are going to get their man.

playing time
LT would get more playing time with the Jets.

The signs aren’t looking good. Whatever, though. We’ve got enough ammo with or without him.
Playing time?
I don’t see LT getting too many touches with either team, but I think there might be more touches for him here than in NY. Nobody’s mentioning Leon Washington when they talk about the Jets. I guess there isn’t much point debating as it sounds like he’s going to sign with NY. Would’ve liked the signing but agree that it’s no big deal if he goes to the Jet’s. Might even be a blessing in disguise like last year with Housh.

Just say no!
Forget LT. Draft this guy!
5’11" 220 4.43 forty 26 bench 40.5 vertical
Ben Tate RB Auburn TALENT BOARD Round 3
STRENGTHS
Ben is a strong running back who looks and plays bigger than his height and weight would suggest. He is a smart player who understands and reads defenses; he has the lateral agility to pick up the blitz and protect his QB. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and shows an excellent burst to the hole and in the open field. Ben is a strong runner and hits the hole at top speed. He looks to be an excellent teammate and shows some leadership skills in his play on the field. In my opinion, this kid is a bit of a sleeper running back to be drafted by a team that uses a zone blocking scheme for its running game.
NEEDS TO IMPROVE
Ben is not your shifty, vision in the hole, cut-on-a-dime running back. That means that with a good offensive line, and in the right system, he will impact. He is a one-cut-and-go type of running back. If you are going to draft him and expect him to carry the load, make his own yards, cut and look for holes, you are barking up the wrong tree. The best way to use Ben so that he impacts is to pair him up with a running back who is a cut on the dime, vision in the hole style of back who can make his own yards. This will make it hard for a defense to adjust to the different style of backs and drive them nuts.
BOTTOM LINE
Ben can impact right away as a third down back because he is so adept at reading the blitz and catching the ball out of the backfield. He will impact right away in a zone blocking scheme, but he is a one system type of back, which limits all of the teams being interested in him and therefore drops his value. Ben is a “ready to use” third down back and that makes him a potential back that should be drafted somewhere in the first three rounds. I like this kid’s game because his intelligence and blocking skills are far ahead of the average back coming out in the draft. He has an excellent burst, great straight line speed and is a tough kid. All of these ingredients lend themselves to a running back that should be pretty successful at the NFL level. Ben reminds me of Kenneth Davis, a running back who was paired up with Thurman Thomasin Buffalo. Thurman was the cut on a dime, vision in the hole type of running back that could make his own yards and Kenneth was the straight ahead speed, change up back that would break big plays because the defense was hesitating to catch Thurman and could not adjust quickly enough to Kenneth’s style of running. That hesitation was enough for Kenneth to make impact plays when he came on the field to rest Thurman. Early in Thurman’s career, he was a bit of a fumbler and Kenneth was brought in to run inside the red zone. Ben should be an excellent red zone running back because of his all around abilities, most especially his blocking skills. Ben should become a core player for his team and a fan favorite.
Need I say more?
i'll take LT
LT is proven and i think he still has a couple more years left for him. Just the amount of time we need him.
Ben Tate looks like he will be a good NFL player. I believe the Chargers will take Terrence Cody in the first, and Ben Tate in the second. If that is the case, that means to get him in the second, we would need to trade up. Generally, in this draft, we should trade down, not up, as we could use more picks, not fewer, and this draft class is deep at most positions.
There are other good running back prospects in later rounds, like Anthony Dixon, Toby Gerhart, and Montario Hardesty. Joe McKnight and LeGarrette Blount have a lot of talent, but the Vikings might take a big PR hit if they drafted one of them, so they probably won’t.
There is also Andre Anderson of Tulane (same school as Matt Forte, and with all the tools to be a 3rd down back). Stafon Johnson could be a great fit, but he might not be 100% until 2011 or so. Finally, Pat Paschall of NDSU could be a late-round value.
Apparently, our coaches believe that Albert Young can be an effective third down back. On the other hand, there was a report that the Vikings were scouting Ben Tate at the Senior Bowl.

I should have written that better. They might if it was McKnight or Blount.

Even then
I think most people understand that it’s all about talent in the later rounds. Sometimes it means getting an all-around contributor like Mewelde Moore, other times a bust like Ciatrick Fason and other times a talented fool like Onterrio Smith. Vikings fans should get it more than others, really.
Never heard of these people
Thurmon Thomas? I don’t even remember when he played for the Vikes…
:)
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
I think it would be cool to have LT, and think he could definitely contribute
But seriously I don’t really care that much. I think we’re ok with what we got, or look at late round draft picks for a back up RB. I am much more interested up in upgrading the O-Line and secondary.
I'm with the front office on this one.
If LT is not 100% committed to the Vikings then we need to just say “Good Luck, wherever you end up”. We don’t need him as bad as he can use us. We are not weak at any position. Just looking for the best players to fill some holes, either through the draft or FA.

If anything...
Last years hyperventilation on Housh shoudl serve as a reminder not to get too excited over any possible signing. Had we signed Housh we would not have drafted Harvin and the trajectory of the season might have been quite different. The future surely would.
I had forgotten that we would not have drafted Harvin. Thanks for reminding me.
If we sign LT we might pass on a great back that falls to us. Spiller,Mathews,Bestone or more might be available in the first round if we want.

we can't always gamble on the draft
last year was a great pickup but we cannot overlook the importance of a solid vet RB
The point was...
That despite missing out on Housh it all worked out. Exagerating the importance of one move or another in any direction is pointless. I have been suspect about the Vikings in-house option myself, but maybe Young is ready, maybe Johnson, who played in a system at Boise St. that required him to be on the field during passing downs can handle the job. A veteran presence isn’t necessarily the way to go either.
For sale at NFLShop.com, Tomlinson's Vikings jersey
From time to time, the folks responsible for selling NFL-related apparel put the cart ahead of the horse.
Or maybe they know more than the rest of us.
Either way, NFLShop.com currently is selling Vikings’ jerseys bearing LaDainian Tomlinson’s last name on the back.
No similar product is being offered in Jets colors.
It most likely means nothing. But it gives us something to write about while we wait for Tomlinson to decide his next move.

that really didn't surprise me
just like when they said that LT had not come away with a contract in Minnesota, I believe that that the only reason that LT went to NY was to gain leverage with the contract negotiations with the Vikes
Heard that too
2st reports had him inking with the Jets. Apparently a more reliable source said he left with no contract.
They didn’t say if he had a Jets jersey in hand like he did a Vikes. That may be a weird, but small good sign.
The better sign is he didn’t get pushed into inking with NY which to me says the Vikings did something right.
I have a gut feeling we are going to here he is signing with the Vikings on Monday. If he wanted to be a jet he would have stayed and ironed out contract details while there. I sure wouldn’t be jumping around if I had mad the decision.
Maybe the Vikes offered less. They called to seee if they would match and they said they would. Leaving NY unsigned is a great sign for the Vikings chances.
I was going to say..
I know that he had some other potential visits.. But I think he wants to be on a win-now team…
Interesting how it’ll all pan out..
I have to believe that all three teams ( Vikes, Jets, Saints) are win now teams.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

not so sure?
Vikings are a win now team, they have been steadily increasing over the past 3 years and i think they will peak in the next few years. As for the saints, i don’t want to quote statistics but it really does not look good for the super bowl winners. Take last years and the year before. Plus my hate for the saints kind of affected my attitude toward them. And for the Jets, they weren’t exactly a powerhouse last year either. They sort of sneaked into the playoffs and they too heavily reliant on Revis Island. And as for playing time there, how much would he really get. They are for some reason going to have Shonne green start for them and they also have this guy named Leon Washington. This guy was a beast before he got injured. And the Saints have a even bigger rotation at RB. I don’t see LT signing with either one of those teams. I just believe it to be a visit to gain leverage for more Moneys, but i don’t think Ziggy will have a hard time forking over the dough.
I think the Saints have a pretty good chance of making next years PO’s..
They have a pretty good offense, and the NFC south isn’t all that strong.
I don’t see LT going to the Saints though. RB’s don’t get many carries there, and like you said, they have too many RB’s as it is, so LT would almost never touch the ball.
At this point LT has to know that in a year from now, he’ll be lucky if he’s on any team at all.
I have trouble believing that LT wants to rely on a team who backed in the PO’s last year, over a team who was a BS-DPI Penalty away from appearing in the SB.
If the Vikings offered a respectable amount of $, there’s a great chance LT will be wearing a purple #21 jersey next year.
thats the problem
it’s all about the money. I know that he said that he wants to win a championship but when it all boils down, he is just gonna want the money. And i’m afraid that he might get lured to the Big Apple for all the lights not any of the substance.
I would want the money too
These are some HUGE guys that are trying to take his head off and when these guys retire they are all beat up and there are studies where it is said that there life expectancy is shorter.
Who wouldn’t want to get the most money with all of these risks?
LT has every right to go visit any team and make whatever decision he wants. He’s a free agent and we can respect that. I hope the Vikings end up as his choice.

this is why animals hibernate
so they only have to be part of the regular season(so to say). But they get to skip the off season.
Quinn traded to Broncos
Brady Quinn was traded to the Broncos for a fullback and a couple of late draft picks, possibly conditional.
I’m glad the Vikings didn’t get him.
We couldn't get him because we still have TJack whom nobody wants apparently
How sad that he cannot even get an interview.
I guess the third round tender scared teams off.
Even Charlie Whitehurst is rumored to be making some trips and has some offers.
Is there any team that would even talk to TJack to find out if he understands their offense a little and how much money he wants?
I bet we couldn’t even get the same package that the Browns just got for Quinn if we asked or begged.
That was not one of the TOAs best draft moves along with Cook IMO.
How many RFAs have even had interviews so far?
by medicineball on Mar 14, 2010 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Two I think.
The only ones I recall are Brandon Marshall and Whitehurst. Actually I think there was one other player who had a third round tender. Not much interest in any case.

Sorry, but you're better off without Ladanian (LT is Lawrence Taylor - a HOF'er).
He yards per carry have been dropping off fast, and he can’t stay healthy. You also don’t want Adrian picking up on his “all about me” vibes. The 400+ yard seasons killed him. He may have a resurgent year, but he’s likely all washed up. San Diego could have kept him and didn’t. You have to wonder why.
