Lock up Edwards - Go after Leon Washington!

I say sign Ray Edwards long term, THEN go sign Leon Washington to be the Vikes 3rd down back.  We could even put a little poison pill in the package (hence the signing of Edwards FIRST) to make sure we get him.  Yeah, he's coming off of a broken leg, but he's supposed to be fully recovered and full speed for training camp.  It would cost us our LATE 2nd round pick, but he's young, fast, experienced (can pick up an NFL blitz better than a rookie RB), catches the ball well, and would be a deadly 1-2 combo with Percy (let alone AD in the backfield) in the return game!  Leon returning punts and Percy on the kickoffs! Combine THAT with all those touchbacks on kickoffs the Vikes will get this year and BOOM!  #1 special teams in 2010!

If we’re going to go after a RFA RB I’d much rather have us go and get Pierre Thomas.

I would rather keep the pick

and pick up something we need out of the draft.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

Would have been much simpler to keep CT

God knows

I think this will be something that haunts us next season. I’m thinking our third down conversion rate (which was very good last year) will take a severe hit with CT out of the picture.

I don't know chester was a favorite target who was pretty much always open for a quick 5 yards.

Harvin was also a big factor in third down, and I guess Shiancoe can start working in on that rotation…

Maybe Percy can pick up the slack

Favre loves going to him, but I got the impression that Percy was having issues in Dec/Jan.

As a Saints fan

I really don’t think that you would be able to get him. I would be amazed if they don’t sign him long term. He is to valuable of a back to us.

For your information Viking's and Colt's fans, no matter how much you say it, you were not the better team in 2009.

I'm sure you'll match whatever people throw at him.

I think this is bass ackwards!

The only RFA we should be targeting is Jared Gaither OT from Baltimore.

If we can get him and trade McKinnie for a 2nd or 3rd and a 6th then we will have done good. Next year his trade value will be less.

Gaither is 6-9 340 and 24 years old. He has started the last two years on a playoff team. Baltimore does not need him because they have Oher and they are not going to pay two tackles LT money.

This will shore up our left tackle spot for years and should be an improvement over McKinnie at this stage in his career.

Then you can get whatver backs you want. You need the line first.

by MarkSP18 on Mar 16, 2010 2:26 PM CDT reply actions

with you on that one man

I have no idea why we’re not looking at Gaither, they can’t think that McKinnie will be around forever. However, in this uncapped year I might keep McKinney around and trade him out next year.

Leon Washington makes sense. Favre has played with him.

Jared Gaither makes sense too.

Poison Pill

Every single blog site has a fan wanting to put in a poison pill provision. The first team to do this was the Vikings. They made it so Seattle could not match the terms The league asked for arbitration on Seattles behalf because they thought the idea of a Poison Pill provisions would be detrimental to the league. The arbitrator found in favor of the Vikings and upheld reasonable contract language. The only other team to use such a provision was Seattle in retaliation against the Vikings. No other poison pills have been used.

Coincidence? No. The league ownership has come to understand that if a team uses such a provision you are shooting yourself in the foot. It will be used against you. It appears that teams will not be using poison pills but instead simply make an offer and see if a team can match.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

Wasn't Chester redundant to Percy?

it’s a no brainer!

i would love to get a first round for edwards

there is nothing more than i would like than to get an upgrade at DE

by muffin man on Mar 16, 2010 4:15 PM CDT reply actions

who's left

to get after lets say pick 25… I don’t see any team with a lower pick wanting a DE. I believe they all have more pressing matters to go after.

by midnightwonder on Mar 16, 2010 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Brandon Graham, Everson Griffen and Carlos Dunlap.
At least one of them WILL be available at #24, and IMHO they’re all upgrades over Edwards.

You believe

that they are all upgrades over Edwards and will be start worthy and noone esle would have gotten them.
You sir are a true optimist. I respect that, but disagree. They would still need to learn our system, be able to rush the passer AND stop the run. Thats a tall order for a rookie that’s not drafted in the top 15. I’m not saying it isn’t possible, but that’s a huge gamble. If Edwards refuses to take our offer then I can see us going after a DE in the 2nd round or later, but our most pressing need is DBs.
