Which is the Greatest Viking Team of all Time?

Hey guys, a year or two I put together a Tecmo Super Bowl hack that featured the single best team from 28 different franchises.  Some of the teams were easy to figure out, others much more difficult.

At the time I made the rom, the Patriots were in the midst of their unbeaten season, and after reviewing stats, I ended up choosing the 98 Viking team as the winners.

Well, I'm re-doing the hack, and this time to try to avoid subjectivity as much as possible, teams get that get farther automatically beat others.  (Example, the 04 Patriots would be IN, 07 Patriots)  This leaves the 98 Vikings team OUT. But then the toughest decision, which Viking team to put in?

There are 4 choices, the 1969, 73, 74, 76 teams, each getting to the Super Bowl but falling short.  Not being alive when it happened or being a Vikings fan, my knowledge of these teams is fairly limited to what numbers tell me, and looking at stats, no one team (to me at first glance) stands out from the others.

So I was hoping the Viking faithful could help me out and let me know which team is regarded by Viking fans as being the top dog?  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!

(Note, on the poll, I did include the 98 team as well as this past years' team in case.  If it is overwhelming in favor of the 98 team then they will remain)

Bud Grant has said this was his best team. This is the year that the scum sucking Drew Pearson pushed off Nate Wright to catch the “Hail Mary” from Roger Staubach. This atrocity denied us a place in the Super Bowl that year.

I wasn’t around, but my dad still claims that this was by far the best Vikings team he had ever seen.

The '75 Vikings Team was the Best

But that wasn’t an option so I didn’t vote :)

I’d rank the 1998 team second, and the 2010 team third. Pros and cons for each, but 15-1 trumps 12-4 every time.

Ah, ah,

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.

To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

Actually, the 2010 team is the team that will get us our first Supebowl, this year. :)

Had to go with 98

Was a bit young in the early 70’s to really understand what was going on. But 98 was a special season. Rarely do I watch the Vikes and think, I wonder how the other team is going to try and beat us. But that year, man that year I knew we could beat anyone.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

I have to admit that 98 team was almost unstoppable. BUT

They lost at home. To an inferior team. This is not the sign of the best team ever.

The 73,74,75,76 team was the same team. Should have been four straight SBs. Times were grand before free agency screwed up a good dynasty?

No defense has been any better over a 4 year span. Nobody ever. I think the 76 team having come back from the horrible 75 season ending game showed me the most character of all. Therefore I vote for ’76 as the best. Great QB. Great defense. Great RB.

But if you didn’t see Joe Kapp floating those ducks in ’69 you missed out on something magical.

Agreed

The ’09 Vikes would crush the ’98 version.

I don't think the '09 defense could have stopped the '98 offense. And Vice Versa.

That would have been a fun game to watch. But 15-1 crushes 12-4 almost always.

The difference between

The ’09 defense and the ’98 defense is much greater than the difference between the ’09 offense and the ’98 offense.

Offense: Advantage 1998.
Defense: Advantage 2009.
Special Teams: Advantage 2009
Coaching: Advantage 2009

What your'd take the Leprechaun over Green?

I’m not sure I agree with that. Plus we had some good people on D. Just a porous secondary. Wait that sounds familiar…

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 17, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

We had good people on D, yes

John Randle and Robert Griffith are 2 of my all time fav Vikes. But as a unit, they were pretty bad. I watched the 98 NFC championship a few weeks ago and it was pretty bad. They couldn’t stop Atlanta if their lives depended on it.

I also watched the episode of Missing Rings on NFL net the other day and Cris Carter hinted several times that the offense knew they were going to have to outscore all of their opponents that year to win. Which worked out pretty good considering they scored an NFL best 556.

Now I will say that the defense in 98 was opportunistic, kinda like the 09 Saints D. The Vikes 98 d was too small, didnt have much depth and were not well coached however.

I will take Childress and Co. over Green and Co. Better discipline. Better on draft day. Better evaluator of talent. Harder worker; You don’t see Childress fishing on Mondays the way Green did.

The only advantage Green had was Billick over Childress’s Bevell. And even that’s debatable.

the 09 defense stops the 98 offense more than the 98 defense stops the 09 offense

That would be the difference. That, or Ace Duece in the return game!

AP would have been AD against that 98 defense. That would keep the 98 offense off the field.

I don't know about that

Who’s picking up Moss? Carter? Robert Smith was a beast in the backfield. Cunningham had a cannon for an arm and was still much more mobile than Farve would be. Reed > Shiancoe. Only person who they probably don’t out match is Harvin. Although saying Cunningham is better than Favre is a pretty big stretch, and AD-Smith is pretty far out as well.
What you are completly forgeting about though is our offensive line which was pretty much the best in the league at that time (man I miss Tice) Stuessie, Randal McDaniel, Korey Stringer, and Matt Birk(lol) That was an O line from hell. had Hoard as our battering ram…
Yeah the D was bad, but it did have Randal, Griffith and Ed McDaniel on it. Oh and of course you can’t forget just missed one Gary Anderson…

by Grime on Mar 17, 2010 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually it was Jeff Christy

But ya I rememeber that line. I also rememeber how good that team was. But I’ll leave my arguement at this, after we lost to the Saints this year, I turned to my wife and said, “that was the greatest Vikings team that I have ever seen.”

The 98 Vikes lost to Atlanta at home and Atlanta went on to lose in the Super Bowl.
Had the ball bounced a little differently for this version, we would have won the super bowl.

And Christy was the center. I do think Matt Birk was on the team though.

Youre right, Birk was a geeky rookie from Harvard in 98 LOL

That geek sent Christy packing to the Bucs and did a hell of a job for a long time for us. We sure missed him this year.

Joe Kapp's ducks were a contradiction of epic proportions.

Can you imagine a Mel Kiper Jr’s. scouting report on Joe Kapp? I think Mel’s hair would spontaneously combust and he would join the drummers from Spinal Tap in the Spontaneous Combustible Hall of Fame.

I think Coaching was even between 1998 and 2009

I personally am not a huge fan of Green or Childress. However, I agree that the 1998 team is better.

Hey the good news is we have plenty of choices.

and all of them were great teams in their own rights. How about if you were the Lions.. Or even Tampa where you really only had one good team to choose from?

Sad…

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

I’m surprised how much love this years’ team got, but the overwhelming support seems to be for the 98 edition, they got more votes than all of the 70’s teams’ combined, so they will remain for my next rom.

Thanks guys!
