LT's answer as to why he signed with the Jets

Dan Patrick talked with All-Pro Runningback Landanian Tomlinson today on his daily show "The Dan Patrick Show". He pretty much just asks him about 8 questions about the New York/Minnesota choice. Full story after the jump. By the way, his answer to the last three questions are just hilarious, espicially the last question.

Star-divide

Well no big deal, Young or Spiller [(HOPES WAY UP! :)] will do fine.

DP: If Brett Favre said he was coming back to Minnesota, would that have changed your mind?
LT: I would have still went to New York.

DP: I don't believe you. I wish I could see your face right now. Did you guys text?
LT: I knew he had been in both places. I kind of wanted to get his idea of both places.

DP: He lobbied you to go to Minnesota, didn't he?
LT: Yeah, I mean, he definitely did.

DP: Did he get a hold of you first or did you get a hold of him?
LT: He reached out to me.

DP: Doesn't that lead you to believe he's going to come back and play?
LT: Yeah it does, but like I said before, that had nothing to do with my decision. I think at the end of the day, even though Favre hasn't said he's coming back, you just didn't know for sure.

DP: If Favre is in Minnesota still playing, who has a better chance of going to the Super Bowl, Minnesota or the Jets?
LT: That's a good question. Both of them were in the conference championship game last year. I can't put one up over the other.

DP: How did the Jets close you?
LT: I've been in this offense all of my career. You know going to Minnesota I'd have to learn a new offense. And that's a tough thing to do. It's a West Coast offense. I've never been in that system before. So it would have been a bit of a challenge starting out trying to learn that offense. Where with the Jets, I know the offense. I know [offensive coordinator] Brian Schottenheimer. I enjoy being around Rex Ryan. So it's just a better fit.

DP: When the Jets open up the stadium on Monday night of Week 1, who's the starting running back for New York?
LT: I don't know, that's obviously a long way away.

DP: Are you going in there trying to win the job, or are you being told that you're there to help Shonn Green?
LT: No I'm not going in there with any idea if I'm going to be the starter or anything like that. I approach this situation as I'm coming to a new team -- a team that was very good without me. And I've got to sit in and find a role with these guys. And you know part of that is going to be obviously helping the young talented guy like Shonn Green. And also helping Leon Washington, that's a part of my role. But who knows what the future's going to hold as far as being a starter or not.

DP: Why aren't you a San Diego Charger?
LT: It was time to move on.

DP: By you or them?
LT: Both.

DP: But this is a team that needs a starting running back.
LT: They don't need a running back in that type of offense like me -- the type of skills that I have.

DP: Were you too expensive. If you would have taken less, would they have kept you?
LT: It wasn't about the money at all. I could have taken more money to go to Minnesota, but it wasn't about that. With the Chargers, it was really time to move on.

DP: Is it Philip Rivers' team?
LT: Absolutely. Yes it is.

DP: Should it be?
LT: Yes, absolutely it should be. But I don't think that should have meant [we can't play together]. I don't think it had anything to do with it in my mind. Maybe in their mind it did. In my mind, it didn't.

DP: If I say you'll get 500 rushing yards this year, but you're going to the Super Bowl, are you OK with that?
LT: Absolutely, no question. Dan, you've seen my career, I've done some great things individually, but I haven't done any great things with a team yet. And that's what I'm in New York for. I believe this team can win a championship.

DP: Were you concerned that you were going to be labeled the greatest running back not to win a championship? Sort of like Dan Marino, greatest quarterback.
LT: Yeah, I mean, it's definitely there. I can't tell you how bad I've wanted to win a championship, to experience everything you can possibly experience. But seeing your buddies win championships, someone like Drew, who I'm close to, seeing that. It was something that I just feel missing and I would like to feel like that.

DP: How close were you to joining the Saints?
LT: Not close at all.

DP: Do you have a 1,000-yard season left in you?
LT: Absolutely.

DP: Were the Redskins on the list?
LT: No.

DP: You'd never play for the Raiders?
LT: No

DP: Even if it was a great offer?
LT: Yeah, even if it was a great offer. The things we built here in San Diego going against the Raiders -- we beat them 12, 13 straight times. I couldn't just go to the other side.

DP: What if that's the only offer, that or retire?
LT: I'm retiring.

Oh LT, how foolish you are

bless you if you truly believe that the jets are a better team than the Vikes. But i guarantee you that you are choosing cities over teams. If our roles were reversed and we were in NY i am confident that you would choose us. The only thing that i think you are correct about it, the Raiders do really suck.

It sounded like he thinks he can be a starter over there or at least a 50/50 back.

Also he has a point he has dealt with their offensive coordinators before he knows the system.

What I found interesting is that Minnesota offered him the most money.. That actually sounds like good news to me. It sounds like we’re willing to spend money on people we need/want which leads me to think they have a solid enough team right now not to have to.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 18, 2010 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I read it that way also.

The amount of money wasn’t important to him. Playing well in a familiar system and helping to win a SB is important. Since we can’t change a system just for him I wish him well.
But If the Vikes find a person who can help this team they will go after him. That is important.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

No worries

This is a business. He made a choice, now he has to stand by that decision. Things will work out for us. I wish LT well, except for the day we play the Jets.

Would it be like complete destruction?

Like when we played the Seahawks?

Oh I hope so………..

Do you know where we play them?

That would be sweet to stomp their arses and see our guys give LT a big hug after the game.

This year..

We played the Seattle Seahawks..
We played the whole NFC West Division (49ers, Seahawks, Cardinals, St Louis Rams).

If I recall, we heavily beat the Seahawks… I want to say the score was 38-0/38-7 to that effect.

by Deek on Mar 18, 2010 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

No I meant 2010 season

We play the entire AFC East dont we? Where and when do we play the Jets?

Not sure...

I am sure we play the division winners of the NFC though.

That would include, NO Saints, Dallas Cowboys, AZ Cardinals..

If we play the Jets, we likely play their whole division (AFC East)

I noticed that was how we were scheduled this year.

We played the whole AFC North Division & all the division winners from 2008.
We played the whole NFC West division…
This led us to playing each team that was in the Superbowl of 2008 & the division they resided in. And all the other teams out of our own conference were division winners of 2008.

That being said, you wouldn’t think initially our schedule would of looked so easy..

Think the same can be said for 2010? I hope so…

Ya especially when I saw the AFC North. But we ended up 3-1 against em and were one fluke tripping call away from going 4-0.

But I do believe we play the AFC East and NFC East in 2010

ya..

Who would of thought that the Bengals would have such a successful year? At least we still beat them which what looked to be by ease.

Sadly, we lost to both teams in the Superbowl the year prior. What makes that sad is how the Steelers had a play-off missing season.

Well…. We could of been the Giants/Broncos, start better w/ a 5-0 record and miss the playoffs.. Wait? We did that before, but luckily, not this year.

by Deek on Mar 18, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm pretty sure we play @ AFC East

I can’t find it now, but they released the schedule of who and where we play, but no dates.
I just remember seeing all those outdoor games and thinking about Favre…lol.
I hope we play most of those games early in the season when it’s still warm.

by chaosg on Mar 18, 2010 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

You would never play all

Four games at the AFC East, Two will be there and two at the dome. We just arent sure which two teams will be coming here and which two we will have to go visit.

I love Twins Baseball and Minnesota Vikings Football.

I found the schedule

http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/blogs/79930897.html

Home Games:
Cowboys, Giants, Bills, Dolphins, Cardinals…Bears, Packers, Lions.

Away Games:
Eagles, Redskins, Patriots, Jets, Saints….Bears, Packers, Lions.

by chaosg on Mar 18, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Lets hope...

Eagles/Pats/Jets are earlier in the season..

by Deek on Mar 18, 2010 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

and Bears and Packers

I love Twins Baseball and Minnesota Vikings Football.

by Percy Harvin My Fav! on Mar 18, 2010 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Lets also hope

that the Eagles and Patriots continue their downhill spiral..lol

Also, that’s 6 games on grass fields. The Vikings kinda-sucked on grass fields last year.
They better fix that, or they’ll be lucky to finish 8-8. :(

by chaosg on Mar 18, 2010 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah that worries me as well.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 19, 2010 7:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I was thinking the same...

I hope they do lots of field practice..

They only tended to suck late-season grass.

They did well earlier season..
Steelers game was on grass (even though we lost, but we played pretty good).
Packers game was on grass as well the Bears..

I don’t think it’ll be so much a grass factor this year, since we’ll be used to it. 2009, most of our games seemed to be on turf.

by Deek on Mar 19, 2010 8:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, considering...

We play the AFC/NFC east.. Since I believe this is correct, since I think we play the Eagles…

A lot of those games will probably be outside.

I am sure we’ll have some outside games..
But remember, even the Bears/Packers could potentially be cold games.

Anyways, no worries about Favre, did anyone see how well he did 2nd 1/2 of the Bears game??

by Deek on Mar 18, 2010 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Bears & Packers

I believe that the schedule alternates each year in where division rivals play. The Vikes played both of these teams first at home the past year so we should be on the road against them first this year. The only question will be do they get them early in the season or mid-way?

by purplegrey on Mar 19, 2010 7:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I'll take both of them..

Early to Mid-season..

That way both those game should be warmer… Even middle of the season isn’t so bad.

Just hoping to limit our away cold games.

by Deek on Mar 19, 2010 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I wonder if his answer regarding the Raiders....

…. would be different if they weren’t awful. I didn’t hear the interview happen, but from the text it almost seems like DP was asking a “would you go to your old team’s arch rival” question and LT2 was answering a “would you go to a bad team run an insane old man” question.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Mar 17, 2010 8:33 PM CDT reply actions

lol I did like his answers though

no. no. no.

Hell I have no idea why anyone goes to the Raiders anymore. It’s a complete joke of a team. I feel worse for them than I did the Lions fans a couple of years ago. At least the Lions can recruit people. No one in their right mind wants to get near Oakland. It is after all the place first round draft picks go to die.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

The Raiders are the Toronto Maple Leafs/New York Knicks/Kansas City Royals of the NFL: There always seems to be some hope in the fanbase, but bad managment screws them over (JFJ w/ the Leafs, Isiah w/ the Knicks, and the Royals just can’t accomplish anything)

they wish then they would at least win

when they play their practice squad at least 50% of the time.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 18, 2010 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Would they still win?

The Raiders seem capable of defeating themselves and having both squads lose somehow. Space-time would cease to exist in Oakland, if it hasn’t already.

I hesitate to remind folks of this ..

… but, they were in the Superbowl just seven years ago …
