Childress/Favre and play calling

You guys have been absolutely amazing with regards to helping this, now more educated, Brit out regarding my last question regarding the draft and seeing as you were so wonderful I've got another question for you. It's about the following:

a) Who (or what combination) of people call the plays that we see on offense and defense?

b) Is Childress likely to improve/adapt considering Favre's input (I remember in the 2009 season during the Bears game we were getting annihilated until Favre started calling the offensive plays and then we made a radical come back)

c) Was Chilly's (our resident leprechaun/Gerbil)  play calling so vanilla due to T-jack and his need to learn our playbook or is that Chilly?

d) If (When) Favre comes back how much input do you think he is going to have on the play calling and is that going to be the difference between us getting to the SB next year or not?

e) Does our defensive play calling need a shake up or is it good at the moment? (I seem to remember that we don't blitz, but we us Jared Allen to cause a lot of pressure, but he was getting double teamed a lot during the last games... expecting that to continue will that affect our strategy at all?)

f) Should we start a "Help the dumb Brit" column (this one is what you'd call dry British humor :D)

Not sure about the play calling stuff.

They were saying on ESPN earlier that the issue between Chilly and Favre was real, and Favre wants more control of the offense. But who knows thats probably just another Werderumor.

Well you missed one of the important parts there Karl

You also have Bevell in the mix. Bevell as the offensive coordinator should be the main guy in charge of play calling. I think Childress puts a lot of his own spin on this though so, I’m not sure how they share duty on it. I do know that Favre audibled quite a bit at the line and that because of that we did better this year than the prior ones. However, you are correct in your assumption that TJ could not handle the entire playbook when he was under center so that pretty much nuetered our offense.

This is the issue with the QB calling plays at the line. He sees what is going on at that moment far better than the coach and can see the blitz and the coverage so he sometimes needs to call out of a play. However, the head coach (HC) and OC have a longer view in mind. They may be trying to show something to the defense so they will bite on plays later on that they are setting up. So it’s a bit dicey Childress I feel likes to keep things close to his chest and so Favre might mess up something he’s trying to pulll off when he’s trying to make a play. With this said I like Favres play calling better than Chilly’s at times.

Defensively we don’t blitz much becasue our front four are so dominant, and it lets us put seven into the back field to try and take away the passing routes. You see a lot of teams attempt to emulate this but none of them do it to the same degree Minnesota does. Now our secondary is very passive and I think they can get more opporunistic. Right now they play a bend don’t break and the go after the receiver instead of the ball. This will reduce YAC but it stops us from making many interceptions.

Hope this helps! And remember no matter how intelligent and confident any of us sound, remember we’re all just fans.

I don't think the words you are using are the words you think they are

Because intelligent, prompt and wise usually are not discussed in the same sentence with me… Remember we’re all just fans and only our opinions are being expressed. Mine could be wrong and honestly MB and LLV may very well completely disagree with this post. But then they are both butt munches.

I agree with just about your entire assessment grime

As far as playcalling is concerned, in an ideal world the OC and DC would be responsible for each week’s game plan, with the head coach having veto power. If you can rely on your QB to get you out of the occasional jam, even better. I think we saw #4 do that more than a few times in 09. I think Childress wants the team identity to be a run-first offense and a stuff the run defense. Sometimes he seems to be a little stubborn to that effect.

Regarding our defense and the lack of blitzing, that’s the nature of our true zone defense. We will occasionally employ a zone blitz (plays where you see Allen or KWill drop into zone coverage, usually covering the hook/curl area) where we bring a backer off the edge or EJ right up the gut.

If we had shut down corners, I believe we would be able to blitz with more regularity and employ man coverage behind it so you wouldnt have to give up a Dline man. But again in ideal world you would be able to generate enough pressure with your front 4 thus allowing you to drop 7 into coverage on every play.

"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Childress, Bevell, Frazier and (QB)

a) Bevell really calls the plays on offense, but Bevell was hired to be Chilly’s lackey. Bevell is Childress’s Mini-Me.

b) At several junctures, it was clear that the more BF controlled the game, the better the variety of plays were (including more downfield passes) and the less we collectively groaned as a Vikings QB threw a 1-yd pass to an average or slower receiver with 9+ to go on 3rd downs.

c) Childress’s “philosophy” is very vanilla in nature and he did not trust The Precious. The result was a vanilla offense with a below average QB minus some flavor…a combination that had previously seemed inconceivable…and last year was a clear indicator that a truly good QB with some control will produce better than anything Childress and Bevell cook up in their vanilla labs with white coats on. Tarvaris Jackson is a career backup. The proof is in Chilly’s moving away from The Precious 3x over so far.

d) I would expect Favre to interject his judgment even more often. Remember that great ending to the SF game? It was improvised on a broken play after whatever Chilly/Bevell had called failed.

e) The Vikings’ defensive schemes, playcalling and possibly the coaching jobs need reshuffling. The consistently poor passing D with hand-picked talent (M. Williams, T. Johnson) and the productivity dip with Sharper before setting him free to prove that he could do great things away from Frazier and the Vikes’ secondary should be grounds to at least put the system and/or Leslie Frazier’s job on the hot seat. Were it up to me, changes would be made this offseason on the D side of the ball.

f) Nah.

(By the way, when I say The Precious, I mean it to reflect that some think that TJ has undocumented and unseen super powers, but ultimately he is bad for us.)

the only thing not mentioned about question a. was the playbook. brad uses a west coast style. it utilizes short accurate passing with a balance of running. when the defence has a let down, or bites as decscribed , then an occasional deep pass is implimented. brad’s schemes are sophisticated. tarvaris inplimented about 60% efficiently and showed moderate success. to brad’s frustration brett is beyond brad’s understanding because of what was described above. faster reads under center. bevell started as a QB coach and got promoted. as he developes as a coach he will call more plays. bevell is the communication bridge for childress that allowed brad to trust brett’s audibles. as for b. farve is advanced with brad’s playbook. about 150%. it frustrates brad that he is the student and brett is the teacher of a book brad constructed. it makes us wonder how much of it is brad’s creation and how much is copied. as for question C. they take what is given to them. they play up against big defences. they score a lot . they win a lot. if that is vanilla ,i will take it.. D. when ! and no the defence is key. at least 5 defensive weapons to add depth will help. brett’s sophmore year will be as magical as those packer fans are quiet this year. frazier needs to unleash the dogs in the saints game or i will be disapointed. they will be paying big dollars to keep all their o-line, and they will need them all plus an army to stop our front four. which leads to D. our cover 2 defence requires pressure from the front 4. chicago had no pressure from theirs , started blitzing and got burnt. result , they over paid for a short term solution all but sealing the fate of their real leader , urlacker , sorry i couldn’t spell his name correctly it’s been so long since i’ve seen his jersey. everyone wants us to use the saints opportunistic defence. but do you want to end up with the 25th ranked defence for a few extra INT’s. remember they had the easiest schedule and their defence was poor and ineffective against good defences. you can group our last game in the equasion because of poor officiating. defensively we put 500 plus yards on them. as for F. you get a B+. , ask how all this relates or equates into draft needs and you will be ahead of the curve. cheerios o’l chap cheerios!!!!!!

wow, I am probably wrong

but wasn’t Bevelle Brett’s coach over at Green Bay? He taught Brett the system we now use which is why Brett wanted to play here in the first place. If I am wrong just let me know. But for some reason I thought Brett had the ultimate respect for Bevelle and wanted to play for him again. In other words he thinks he is a good OC.

bevell held brett’s towel for a few years. he communicates for brett so we dont have to see the drama on the sidelines. his west coast knowledge came along about the time bevell got out of high school. look up how long holmgren’s been their vs. when bevell took over QB position. then you will understand the timeline a little better.

Gothic. What do you believe?

I am a little lost in your thoughts so let me ask you straight up. What do you believe?
Bevelle is a bad OC?
Farve simply knows more than the caoaching staff?
Chilly made a mistake hiring Bevelle?
Ziggy made a mistake hiring Chilly?
Coaching staff is great and gets along with Farve?
Frasier sucks?

My opinion is that we run a complicated playbook an?d we have proven that a big time experienced QB runs it better than a novice QB. That won’t change and if we insert another inexperienced QB we will suffer because of it. That doesn’t change my opinion that the coaching staff has done a good job for the last three years. Getting better each year. This includes the defensive coaching staff
Could you try and pare down a statement for me that explains what your thinking.

Potentially huge issue

In this ESPN video they suggest that Favre will decide on whether to return based on playcalling, the nature of the offense, and so on.

This dovetails with Ryan Longwell’s statement after the NFCCG that Favre had already made up his mind on whether to return a month prior to that time. That would have been about the time of the Carolina game or the Bears game when Childress and Favre seemed to have a disagreement about some things.

According to the ESPN talking heads, Favre wants to “open up” the offense. Otherwise, he will retire.

I take anything from ESPN with a grain of salt, but since it makes sense especially in light of Longwell’s statement, and as Longwell knows Favre from their Packer days, it sounds realistic.

So hopefully Childress and Favre can mutually learn from each other, make some adjustments, clear up whatever issue is out there, get on exactly the same page, and the deck will be cleared for Favre to return in 2010.

With our offensive line aging and not being as effective in the rushing game, going to a pass-first offense may be the smart move. We all saw Peterson get big chunks of yardage on the ground in the Bears game out of a three-wide formation. By spreading out the defense, that will open up lanes for AD, and put more receivers on the field for Favre.

by medicineball on Mar 20, 2010 11:06 AM CDT reply actions

Too many cooks in the kitchen?

My take on our playcalling on offense is that we don’t always have a clear direction. When the passing game gets hot we often try to force feed the run and vice versa. I don’t think we ride the hot hand enough whether it be Favre or Peterson. This could be a manifestation of the tug of war between Chilly and Favre or the fact that Bevell defers to both.

I don’t think a run first or pass first approach is best for our team. I think we should be balanced in the first half so both Favre and AD get involved, then adjust in the second half based on which approach is working better. There were too many games last year where AD didn’t get many touches in the first half and then was force fed early in the third with little success.

Hopefully Favre, Bevell, and Chilly can be more cohesive this year and the offense will be even more successful. Didn’t answer any of karl c’s questions as medicineball’s answers below are in line with my own thoughts with the possible exception of going to a pass first offense.

by CanadianViking on Mar 20, 2010 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Answering the questions

a) Bevell calls the plays. Childress is on the headset, and could always change them. Favre, Jackson, and Rosenfels all are on headset and might pass along something they see to Bevell. Once Favre receives the play, he often would have a run or pass option at the line of scrimmage built into the play. To switch might only require a hand signal. Favre and the other quarterbacks also have the full authority to audible. Favre makes more changes at the line, including audibles than Jackson.

On defense, Frazier calls the plays. They are relayed to the middle linebacker who passes them along to the defense. After EJ got hurt, Jasper called the plays on 1st and 2nd downs, while Leber called them on 3rd downs and any passing down in which Jasper wasn’t on the field. I believe the defensive players can call defensive audibles and make adjustments.

b) I hope Childress does learn from Favre. The best teachers learn from their students. My hope is that Favre returns as a player this year, retires in glory, and then stays with the Vikings organization as a consultant or even coach. Most great players don’t want to coach, but he would make a great consultant for the Vikings. That is just a hope of mine. Favre has more than earned the right to make whatever choice he wants.

c) My guess is that the play calling has remained the same, and the improvement and creativity we saw in 2009 was primarily due to Favre making adjustments at the line of scrimmage. Favre called a few audibles, too. As I said in a comment above, though, Favre seems to want the offense to shift into a pass-first mode. He may have a point. When you have Brett Favre at quarterback, you can pass first and run second. With our personnel, passing first might make sense, and could actually help our rushing attack.

d) I don’t know. I hope that input is made and that helps makes the Vikings successful.

e) There are two goals in defensive playcalling. One, implement the scheme. Two, get the most out of the players we have. When we had Darren Sharper, Frazier unnecessarily limited him. Instead of using Sharper’s talents to the maximum, he put Sharper into a system that Sharper didn’t fit. Then Sharper went to New Orleans, got used correctly, and had a terrific season. Maybe some other players on the Vikings defense aren’t being used correctly. In my opinion, Winfield should be moved to strong safety and asked to play like Bob Sanders used to for the Colts. Winfield could be great at strong safety. We should probably find more time for Brian Robison to play, since he is so effective. If we made those changes, that would suit me. I believe Frazier’s scheme combining elements of the 4-3, Cover-2, Tampa 2, and 46 defenses works well. Frazier has improved over time, and if we are lucky things will really start to come together for him this year as a defensive coordinator.

f) I don’t know if I answered all the questions right, but Cheers!

by medicineball on Mar 20, 2010 11:43 AM CDT reply actions

I will say this

I don’t mind Chilly hamstringing Favre a bit. I mean look at his INT to TD ratio. Now in the end Chilly will ride a horse to it’s death even if the bugger has no legs. Doesn’t matter if the horse won’t get you across the finish line because I beleive he has that much confidence in his game plan. He is trying to set things up and map around so that he can take advantage of mistakes. Unfortunately he’s playing against NFL caliber coaches, who sometimes see through it. Also, there are times when he personnel just can’t pony up the effort to succeed at it. (McKinney during the Panthers game)..

So I like Chilly holding Favre back, but I also like Favre pushing Chilly out of his rut. Personaly, I think they work well together.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
