2010 "Free" Agency
There has been no shortage of discussion on this topic (what else is there to do around mid-March?). Normally at this time we are glued to our computer and tv screens hoping to see our beloved purple make a splash into the free agency waters and revitatlize our roster. This year is new territory for the fans of the final four teams as we have to sit and watch the other 28 teams sign "coveted" free agents at will.
I have gone on record here at the DN and expressed my opinion that its not big deal that we're not aggressively involved in this year's meatmarket. In my opinion, the free agent pool is pretty shallow; Unless of course we are willing to part with draft picks to pry away another team's restricted free agents.
After the break I will provide a list of "potential players" that we may be interested in to help fill some gaps in our current roster due to injury or ineffective play from our current starter. Keep in mind that we are limited to signing 2 UFA at the moment, but are free to sign any released player or RFA to an offer sheet (however we will lose draft picks as compenstion, I included the tenders for these players).
The positions I have focused on are, in no particular order: Guard, Cornerback, running back and linebacker. From other discussions, it appears these are the positions that have received the most conversation.

I did not include every player "available" at each position (there are over 200 RFA this year). There may have been names that I have missed. Please fill free to add them to the discussion in the comments below.

I’d like to see us make a run at Keith Bulluck and either Lito Sheppard or Nathan Vasher for depth in the secondary.
"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

I’d add Rogers to that CB list. I liked him coming out of college, but haven’t followed him too much since he is on the Redskins. He does have size similar to Griffin and might be worth signing or at least looking into for only a 2nd round pick. Vikings might be looking to get a CB at that point anyways.

how about kirk morrison
they only ask a 3rd. also what about waiting and offering a round lower pick in a straight up trade. with this many RFA’s patience could pay off. what do you think and when are the supp picks coming ??
Morrison is a high priced MLB
Morrison was tendered as a third round because he was an original third round pick. However he has started every game since he was drafted in 2005. His salary is 2.5 Million per year. He is guaranteed a 10% raise with the tender. He would have to be offered a contract higher than Greenways for him to come to the Vikings. Considering that Brinkley only makes about $310,000 per year I think I understand why the Vikes would like to keep using Brinkley instead of Morrison.

You'd use Morrison over Leber
Leave EJ in the middle, unless ( or is it until? ) he gets injured. If somebody goes down, put Leber at their position so there’s not a huge drop off. Leber only has another year before he’s a UFA anyhow.
Personally
Get the guard from Denver they had a great offensive line last year. Bit spendy though.. But it’s a known commodity.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Denver...
Seems to rely on the short-pass game… Seems like a potential fit..
I’m not sure if the Bronco’s used a WC style, but they stratted like they sure did. They started off great, and were great with the short-pass game….
Denver does not use a zone blocking scheme and don't consider their offense a WCO.

Broncos
In the Shanahan era, they used the WCO and ZBS. But in the McDaniels era, they switched to the Erhardt-Perkins offense and a power blocking scheme. It’s not John Elway’s offense anymore.

I'm done talking to you two...
like chatting with the bobsy twins but with out the sweater puppets to look at.

Never said it was WCO
I was saying they relied on short-game passing.. Like the WCO
That is where they had their best success until other teams started to shut them down by having this information….
Seemed mid to late season our offense was predictable until we started switching it up and spreading out the receivers and running the ball.
the only good linemen in denver came from the vikes
the guard from denver’s profile says he will be 33 in august. I personally feel they chop block a lot and cause unneeded injuries. not the right fit , sorry…………..
Which denver guard did you look up?
There are two on this list. I think they were referring to Chris Kuper.
I would like to see us look into Baltimores Chris Chester. He’d only cost a 3rd. But I’ve gone on record that I’d like to see us draft McCoy or LeFevour in the 3rd, I don’t want to start flip flopping now so nevermind

m-j-giles for a 4th in a straight up trade
we are in need of a back-up . maybe a swap for cook plus give up a 7th , philly has shown a need for a center. what do you think ? a little vanilla but just trying to think a little out of the box.
Why Giles
He is a fourth round draft pick that really has never fit in with Philly. He only played due to injuries and they don’t value him very high. His salary is only $500,000. Hes an affordable player but is he better than what we can draft?

How about bringing back
The former pro-bowler Michael Bennet!?!? :)
I love Twins Baseball and Minnesota Vikings Football.

Interesting isnt it? Thats why I included him on the list...
Call me crazy, but I dont think Childress would be interested in bringing back a guy from the Green era

I think it’s pretty obvious that they are pretty picky (like only LT) about bringing in older players who have shown diminishing skills.

Restricted Free Agency market is almost completely dead
There has been a grand total of one offer sheet signed, and that was for Mike Bell, who the Saints are apparently willing to let go.
I had anticipated that there would be activity, but it is completely dead. No team is making any move to speak of. Even Ray Edwards had only one or two visits, and no offer sheet was signed. There was barely a sniff.
In the ongoing live mock draft over at mockingthedraft.com, numerous likely NFL starters were being drafted even in the 3rd and 4th rounds. It’s hard to justify losing any draft picks this year. This is a deep draft.
The RFA market is also slowed by the possibility of just waiting one year. A team can just wait for a year and get the same player as an unrestricted free agent in 2011, and keep the draft pick. I think the 2010 RFA market will continue to be frozen over for the duration.
More to it than that.
I read this morning that the Redskins have pared there salaries down to 90 Million. That includes Hainsworth. If there is no new CBA next year then UFAs will be very cheap or refuse to play. The fact that the cap floor has been removed seems to suggest that every team is going to try and be in that 95-110 Million range. Saving each owner at least 17 million dollars. That’s cash money to put in their pockets. Remember, revenues are expected to rise this year, not decrease. I agree with MB. Looks like RFA is dead. I still think Marshal from Denver will be gone but have doubts about any 3rd round or higher tender getting a contract.
