Our Schedule

Okay, having been inspired by Gothic Purple and Grime among others my next question is about scheduling, and also the affect various factors are going to have on our game play.... Being an Historian by training I kind of think about a lot of factors so please excuse the food for thought rambling, but here it is.

How does our schedule look and how do you think it will play out/ be affected by the following factors... (I know that nothing has been settled about who we play and when so I'd see that as another factor to consider)... If I've missed some (as I'm bound to have done, please feel free to shout :D

1) Weather (when not in a Dome)... I'd be interested for views on not only Favre's performance but also Tjack/Sage's perfomance in said weather conditions and also views on the range of conditions possibly faced (Chicago Cold, arizona hot/arid are two that spring to mind from the 2009 season)

2) Injuries, how will the players coming back from injuries have their game/fitness level affected by said injuries and is it better to have the opening games at home/dome.... also will the grass/turf issue be much of an issue in said injury repairs.... who would you rather play and when relating to who we have coming back from injuries/back up/possible draft

3) The Chilly effect... Chilly and the team are on a learning curve, and one would assume adapt and adjust according to a range of factors. Therefore who should we play and when according to this curve and how much of an affect will our latest play off experience have.

4) The playbook. Here's one for the theorists... what game alterations to the play list would you make due to weather/temperature/ time in the schedule.... for example more/less running plays in cold/snowy conditions... shorter/quicker plays for hotter games... later in the schedule adding/testing more plays or closing the play book down if we are in the playoffs and don't want to give away too much.

5)Which are going to be our tougher games and easier games and when would you like them.

6) How much will the different environments affect the different players and our rookies... whose better at playing where and does it make a difference for the rookies/people drafted as to what college they have played/ what conditions they are used to playing in?

Please feel free to comment on some/all of these or add as you see fit... just some food for thought... also thanks to Gothic in particular for this idea :D

Thanks for all the really good responses so far :D

5—Its really hard to say at this point. Before the 2009 season began I thought we had a pretty tough schedule. Looking back I think it was tougher than most are willing to give credit for. We did play the two super bowl teams from the year before, Carolina was 13-3 in 08 and finished the season strong. We played 5 games againts playoff teams.
On paper, the 2010 schedule does look formidable. I always look to see when we play at Chicago and Green Bay for the weather reasons you referred to. We will be playing at New England, at NYJ and at Philadelphia. That gives us 5 potential cold weather games. We also play at Washington so depending on how late in the season that game is that number could be as high as 6 cold weather games.
Personally I’d like to see all first five games I mentioned to be played by the first week in November. But at the end of the day you have to win the games on your schedule if you want to make the playoffs and compete for a championship.

Thanks

Thanks for the answer, it really helps me to build up an idea of what we face! Would also like to say that I love the quote :D One of my fave books, and loved Bram Stoker’s Dracula too :D Just for curiosity reasons did you know the original idea was about two lesbians :D Just goes to show Stoker’s intelligence because he transformed the book into one of the greatest works of British Literature :D

Ya one of my fav lines

Back to the schedule, I think any time we play 10 games in a dome (like we will in 2010) we’re in pretty good shape.

I look for us to go undefeated at home again, win at detroit and win at NO. That’s a minimum of a 10 win season. Of course thats assuming that #4 is back.

Iowa says hello !!!!!

First…..lets break the schedule down as home/away first…….the home schedule is by far the easiest GB,CHI,DET as always MIA,BUF,DAL,NYG,ARI ……..We have played the giants & cowboys at home last year and Arizona is without Warner who played his college ball at my home town UNI Panthers not a cake walk but as close as you can get…………Know AWAY ouch as mentioned before At Jets , Patriots , Redskins , Eagles..four defensive showdowns and the NFL would place them in a row and all in January if they could !!!! ,the Centra and the possible season opener at the Saints in New Orleans…..If they space out the east coast games and throw us wash in late Dec. it could be OK. We will also end up with Chicago early then around Christmas that has been the trend. Know the QB’s R4F would say there is only one QB to mention for all 16 games so lets not upset him today. Though Sage played his college ball at Iowa State and we get about as cold as golly ole England gets………Injuries I will take a raincheck on as it is to early for even Doc Goth to suggest………………As for Questions 3&4 I Hope Chilly sets back and rides the Brett train to Purgatory. As Grimes seems to hope Bevell does need to call more plays as he is in Brett’s ear . #6 the rookies Brad seems to start slow with his rookies , other than on special teams. Rick Speilman takes Big12 and SEC kind of guys and these bigger programs prepare well , but conditioning is another thing. This team as a solid group of coaches and Brad has lightened up since his first year of coaching. We can only hope as the vikes daaft for speed again this year at Rex Ryan doesn’t go out and steal all the tough , gritty players. This team is not in a position to need imediate starters from this draft. But there is nothing wrong with expecting another pro-bowler to come out of this next crop for either of the 2 lines or the secondary. The greatest accomplishment would be to get Brett to coach after he retires. Nobody knows the west coast offense like Farve……Hope I didn’t ramble to much. And look Grimes I can type but why the wife types 120 words a minute so why should I , I’d much rather scramble your reality… Hey dumb Brit these are simply my opinions and I hope they help. I am still hoping as RFA’s sign their contracts and become trade bait that this is when the triangle of authority strikes.. Mark my words we can still use at least one veterian on o-line or CB , along with at least 3 undrafted free agents..see ya……

Rambling thoughts

Good questions, Karl, and worth digging into. Enough things write entire books about, lol. Here’s my initial thoughts on some of it;

1) Weather – We saw the Vikings starting to struggle occur in Dec, but interestingly, the one man who was supposed to have the most difficulties (Favre), handled it pretty well. Let’s face it, when you’re used to (relatively) warm footballs to throw and catch, and suddenly you’re dealing with cold, rock-hard leather, it’s harder to hold onto. The home field advantage in the playoffs is huge, and beyond the weather, the turf they’re playing on will be critical. Someone stated that 10 of our games will be in domes this year, and that should be very helpful.

I recently read about a study which was close to concluding that there are quite a few more injuries on artificial turf than on natural turf. If that does turn out to be conclusive, we may see natural turf even in the domes. This will definitely require some significant adjustment on the part of most of the dome teams, and interestingly, Arizona’s stadium field design may turn out to be the wave of the future (the entire field can roll out of the stadium to sit outdoors).

2) Injuries – The Vikings were pretty banged up by the end of the year and while the early reports on E.J. Henderson and Cedric Griffin seem fairly optimistic, those reports really can’t tell us how well they will be able to step back into their places in the team. We hope they’ll get up to full speed in time for the beginning of the season but the injuries were serious and you never know. Winfield should also be good to go, but he was plagued by injury through most of 2009. You want them to have a few games on the turf they’re accustomed to, to start with, because all those injuries were leg/foot injuries, but there’s no way to control that.

3) Chilly – Well, the Vikings coaching staff has been on a clear improvement curve since their first year.

Chilly – 2009 : 12-4-0
Chilly – 2008 : 10-6-0
Chilly – 2007 : 8-8-0
Chilly – 2006 : 6-10-0
Tice – 2005 : 9-7-0
Tice – 2004 : 8-8-0

I put in Tice’s last two years for comparision (Chilly had a bad rap for his first season), but here’s The Thing; Chilly has improved the Vikings by 2 games in each year that he’s coached the team, going off the baseline of his first season. Really that’s quite remarkable, and actually it continues into the playoffs. In 2008 the Vikings made it to the Wildcard game, and in 2009, they went two games further, to the Championship game. So, if Chilly’s trend continues, 2010 should be the Vikings year to finally bring home the Lombardi Trophy. Fingers crossed.

One of the things that I think the Vikings need to focus on in training camp are the most basic basics.

A) Tackling. The Vikings’ tackling was very suspect at times, failing to bring down the target or missing him altogether.
B) Hold onto the Ball. With emphasis on Adrian Peterson.
C) Ball-Hawking. Yes, the Vikings use a Tampa-2 secondary scheme, also known as the ‘Prevent D’, on the theory that it’s ok to allow some yardage as long as they don’t allow the score. I’m really not thrilled with this, but even in a Tampa-2, the secondary can go for more interceptions. Part of this will mean some catching practice for the secondary, with an emphasis on the LB Corps.
D) Stay in the play! The play isn’t over til it’s over, and each player needs to keep in the play until the end. If the ball moves to another part of the field, hustle over there and contribute, don’t stand around as if you’re job is finished while the rest of the team is fighting for a few more yards. Yeah, I’m staring at McKinnie in particular, there.

It’s the coaching staff’s responsibility to get the team up to speed on those basics, as well as their fancy playbook.

I don’t think you can extrapolate that against projected opponents because of the NFL’s parity-driven team development. Every team is in the mix, every year. Often, a team can be a Super Bowl champion one year, and not even make the playoffs in the next. It’s extremely difficult to build a dynasty as we knew them in the pre-1990s.

4) The playbook – I think I understand your idea on this but I’m not sure it’s the approach I would advocate. I think the team does extremely well with a balanced offense because it offers the option to shift the focus of the attack towards whatever area of weakness that the opponent offers. That’s a decision that the Vikings coaches and the QB have to decide in a strategy going in and then adjust it on the fly at the line of scrimmage. You can only predict it in a general way because teams change their strategies as the year progresses, key players take injuries and new players step up, teams compensate and there’s just no way to know til you’re a lot closer to the game.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!

the official 2010 schedule comes out in early April

ESPN I believe has the early rights. I’m sure the Daily Norseman will get it up as soon as any , right Gonzo.

My thoughts.....

1) Weather — The Vikings performed well outside of a dome when the weather was reasonable (Steelers & Packers). Vikings suffered a few key point turnovers for the Steelers game, but they still performed well when looking at stats. I don’t think it is the temperature that makes the Vikings not play so well, I think that it is the field conditions due to the weather. If we look at some of the colder weather games, we saw a lot of slipping going on. Even in the Carolina game, Favre had to switched to deeper cleets. I hope this is looked into and taken into consideration prior to each away/outside game.

2) Injuries — They’re always a questionable situation. Some people come back and play even better, some lose a step. I think since E.J. has been in the situation before, and is optimistic of playing, I am not too concerned for him. I think for some, injuries push people to more of a vanilla work-out all year and keeps their conditioning up. Winfield, he maybe didn’t give himself a full chance to heal. His foot was still bothering him, but I bet its fully healthy by now, or will be to a point where he can start getting back to a work out rhythm. Griffin, is the most questionable, since he had an actual surgery on his knee. I know I have heard people come back and not play as well. He would be the candidate to look into drafting depth on.

3) Depending on the return of Favre, which is more likely, I expect that Chilly will give Favre a little more freedom. He’ll win at whichever cost seems best, run or pass. He knows Favre can read the defense well and will let him chance plays at the line. I hope they improve their communication overall to come to terms better. I also hope to see more T-Jack time. Favre is something to preserve.. Keep him fresh…

4) Playbook – Vikings have a lot of run plays, and a lot of short pass plays… If anything, I would hope they add more deep pass plays for Favre. We have a great receiving core, so why not? If teams believe we are a pass happy team, they may not expect the run. AD will run wild..

5) Tough Games – I believe the Pats are on a somewhat downfall as of recent years. Jets have a great defense, so I wouldn’t mind playing them sooner in the year. Vikings tend to start off hot as of recent, but tend to falter later in the season. So I would hope some of our tougher away games were done early while some of our easier games to mid/late season… Than, we may need a few wake-up call games late in the season to make sure we haven’t lost a step. Kind of how it went this year… We started off great, but we had our own wake-up call in December..

6) Environments – I think since our team of starters won’t change much, we’ll have had a chance to experience all conditions. (Obviously some just not as much as others)…
I hope they try to mock conditions for a little bit of practice time on that.. If they’ll end up in a potential slippery grass situation, try to mock it.. Chilly has done great during playoffs to prepare for situation purposes (ear plugs, etc). But nothing the lines of field conditions as I have seen.

Thanks

Thanks Deek, some really interesting food for thought there, can you think of any other factors we would need to take into account?

by karl c on Mar 21, 2010 2:11 PM CDT reply actions

One of the things that I liked...

Was Childress’s use of the ear plugs… They blocked out noise from a distance, but made it possible to hear from close range.

This took noise out as a factor. So any dome game, I am not too concerned about.

I think the team as a whole needs more practice on grass with altered conditions.

Other than that, it’s just a sit & wait of how our schedule comes about.

There will be no doubt in my mind that we’ll probably have some late-season outside games in colder weather states.

But.. With this…. Thankfully, or at least hopefully, we’ll have a great run-game to sort of fall-back on..

Good questions to ponder, karl c

1. Weather. I don’t want to research it again, but since 2000 the Vikings track record outdoors is pretty bad. Put them outdoors in cold weather, it’s worse. They struggled against the Browns, Steelers, Bears, Cardinals, and Panthers. The only team they managed to beat was the Browns. And it was warm weather. So let’s look at out 2010 road opponents: Jets, Patriots, Redskins, Eagles, Saints, Bears, Lions, and Packers. 6 of those games are outdoors, and popular thinking is that the VIkings will open up at New Orleans, negating a possible late season dome game. So, unless the Vikings get a lot of road games early, they face a real possibility of 4 outdoor road games in November and December. So pick your bad option: An early schedule with more road games against some tough AFC East teams with a lot of home games late, or a lot of late season road games against quality opponents, in elements that the VIkings historically struggle in. Kind of a Kobyashi Maru scenario, if you ask me. I see, at first glance, 11-5.

2. Injuries: Too tough to predict. As long as Favre, AP, Rice, Harvin, Allen, and Winfield stay healthy, I like the Vikings chances.

3. Chilly Effect: I think it’s time to give the man his due. He has playmakers in his offense, and it kicks ass, like he said it would. Yeah, you can still criticize him for his over-estimation of TJ to this point, but he got Favre to play. Let’s table this issue until 2011, when Favre is really, really, really retired, lol. I think they proved that it didn’t matter who they played and in what conditions, that if everyone was on the same page and they were clicking, that offense was unstoppable. That second half in Chicago was epic. It’s just that on the road, they were very inconsistent.

4 and 5: Pretty much answered earlier. You play your offense, and make the other guy stop you, regardless of conditions.

6. This is a veteran team, and they don’t rattle easily. I don’t see that as a factor at all.

4.

"We're used to Favre-a-palooza now. We're engulfed in Favre-a-palooza. It's not even Favre-a-palooza anymore. He's family now."
