Communtiy Mock Draft Help
Hello Vikings fans! Im from the Miami Dolphins blog ThePhinsider. We're doing a community mock draft, where 32 of us got random teams selected for us and we each make picks for our designated teams. I ended up with your great team the Vikings! I was wondering if u guys could give me a little insight on what you think are your biggest needs at what position, so I can make the draft as realistic as possible and most benificial for the Vikings. My understanding is that your needs are Cornerback (Griffins injury,Winfields age), Safety (I dont think Frampton or Johnson are the long term awnsers), Nose tackle (Pat Williams' age), Quarterback for the future( Farves gotta retaire someday...or does he?), Some OL depth (probley more at Center), possibly Linebacker (due to Henderson's injury). You as fans of the Vikings would probably know better than me though so give me your thoughts and suggestions below. It would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

i didn't think that this many blogs were doing drafts
right now, our immediate need is at cornerback or safety. If i guy like Taylor Mays is still up there at 30, i am sure we will pick him up, but i’m sure he’ll be gone before then. I would look to guys like Devin McCourty or Kyle Wilson. But if they are both gone by then, our safest bet would have to be Brian Price at DT.
On my board....
I have Mays as my first desired pick and Kyle Wilson at two… Who do you think i should go after in the second? Colt McCoy? Tim Tebow? Tony Pike?
there has been much debate about this
i am positive that if colt is still up at the 30th pick we will grab him, same with tebow. But i do not think that they will still be on the board. i am not sure if the Vikes would trade up to get either one of them. i would think more of going for depth at DT and OL
Do u mean...
The 30th pick in the second round? I hope so because I think it would be insane to say that McCoy and Tebow are going to be off the board by the 30th overall pick.
check the combine info
They claim he is not fluid in drills and can’t back peddle. He is fast and strong but he has some question marks.
Actually you can
I used to run my 40 at a 4.7, after 5 months of losing weight and getting into shape i got down to a 4.5, then I ran killers every day for 4 months and now im sitting pretty at a 4.43

Can you catch? The Vikings might need another receiver at some point.

Yes I can. When I graduate college here in a couple years
I’ll go to camp as an undrafted free agent. I prefer playing Safety but WR is my second position.

Idea
This is just an idea. The basic thinking here is you are better off getting some college experience if you want a chance in the pros.
Get in contact with the head coach of your college football team. If you don’t know how to, call the switchboard of your college and ask to speak to him or his secretary. Introduce yourself briefly and enthusiastically, and ask for a chance to walk on. Don’t take “no” for an answer. Find out when, day and time, and where you need to be. If the coach tells you to do something, do it. When you get on the practice field, if you don’t know what to do, just hit somebody hard and clean.
Good luck.

Don't worry about the clean part
Coaches like nasty, you can’t teach that.

Phinn, you ask some interesting questions.
Everyone here wishes they knew the answer. Here is an assesment.
QBOF- Everyone assumes Farve will not be here in 2011.
Sgae Rosenfel will be a UFA in 2011
Travaris Jackson will be on a one year tender in 2010.
So, we have no QB for 2011. To select a QB early in this draft it will be one that can start in no less than two years. I think all except for Clausen and Bradford are projects. We won’t waste a high pick on a project. Skelton, Crompton, Robinson type projects are available in much later rounds. Don’t take Tebow unless you have evaluated him as a “franchise QB”
McCoy is weak armed and doesn’t fit our offense.
If we don’t move up for a “Clausen” type we will bring in a FA next year.
The Vikes always take BPA. Not sometimes. Always.
We need an O-Line player to play multiple positions to replace Hicks.
Most believe we can use a guard to improve our running game. We use a zone blocking system.
We don’t need an UT type of DT like Price. We have Kevin Williams. However some think Kevin will replace Pat so then we need another UT sometime.
Linebackers. Ours are hurt. A great OLB like Weatherspoon is good.
CBs and safeties— We play a zone (tampa 2) exclusively. Man to man coverage skills are wasted. Look at Darrin Sharper. Goes to a different system and does great. We bend and don’t break. Revis would be wasted as a Viking. McCourty plays in a zone. So do several other good CBs.
DEs. We never have enough great DEs. Edwards is a RFA and hasn’t been extended yet.
RBs- We lost Chester Taylor as our pass catching third down RB. A Jahvid Best type is a good idea.
A few of my opinions. Take them for what they are worth.
Some one will fall. The draft is just to deep. Be patience
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Ryan Mathews is a smaller versin of Adrien Peterson.
He is a back that will carry the load for a team and do well. We need a "change of pace "back that has a different running style than AP. Best, really fits the bill nicely. I like Anthony Dixon in later rounds for a big back that can catch the football.
But if needs are how you want to draft then we need back-up OT,OG,CB,S,and DE. The best available at those positions will serve you well.

You keep forgetting about a QB LLV
Or are we mapping that out through FA?
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
As Ihave stated
We need a QBOF but it has to be a guy that can play next year. Clausen and Bradford are the only two “franchise” rated QBs that have that short a learning curve. If the Vikes are sold that one of the QBs is our QBOF then I think they move up and take them or use the #30 pick for him. You certainly wouldn’t risk letting some other team take him in the 2nd round. If we don’t see a QBOF but only see project type QBs then we need to take a project in a later round and grab a FA for next year. I don’t like the older QB route but it has worked for the Vikes for years.
I just want our own QB. Some think Tebow is a QBOF but I think he is a project. Colt is to small frame and weak armed in my opinion to be the QBOF.
Thats how I see it working out with this draft.
But I’m usually wrong about these kind of things. So maybe we get lucky.

We have Percy Harvin as our slot
Sidney rice as our deep #2 and Berriman as our speedy #1
Why would we give up a second for a hurt slot receiver? Plus we won’t have Tom Brady or Brett Farve to throw to him after next year. I would say no unless you value Welker as a very valuable addition. WR just isn’t our need. Pick up Decker in the third or 4th

I like CB or OL in the first round. Wouldn’t be suprised by LB, S, or DT though for our first pick either. Jahvid Best would be interesting.

Saffold
Just throwing this out here again. Building on one of LLV’s points above, we need a backup LT really bad. We have nobody there and McKinnie is coming off plantar fasciitis. We also need a guard, somebody who can challenge Herrera for the right guard spot. That’s two draft picks. But if we found one player who could do both, that’s only one draft pick. A guy like Roger Saffold might fit the bill for the two-duty job in the first round.
(Caveat: the Vikings had three offensive tackles on the practice squad last year, and all three are currently projected to make it to training camp this year. Perhaps one or more of them has the ability to play backup left tackle. I hope so, but I don’t know.)
Hey I have Plantar Fascitis. Can I play OT?
Actually it is very painful but only takes rest to cure. Once it heals then proper footwear usually ends the issue.

It's only a name for having "flat feet"
As we get older ( or more weight) the arch of the foot falls straining ligaments in your feet. A pain like an icepick being rammed in the bottom of your heel is a normal reaction. Raise the arch. No strain and no pain. McKinney (and I) will be fine.

John Jerry OT/OG
Provided that the Vikings sign another veteran CB free agent (even after the first round of cuts in training camp but hopefully sooner) I see the offensive line as the number one area in need of an upgrade.
If Mike Iupati, Anthony Davis, Bruce Campbell, or even Charles Brown fall to #30 the Vikings will probably look really hard at them. I expect them to be gone. I do not expect Jerry to make it to the end of round 2. Jerry isFirst Team All SEC and very very strong at the point of attack. He has played against the likes of Terrance Cody, Dan Williams, Jeff Owens, Geno Atkins, Jerrell Powe, and other DTs in the SEC. I would take him in the first round.
In the second round a guy I hope will be available is Jason Fox OT from Miami. he is flying under the radar a bit because he had some surgery in December but will work out fully on March 30th. He had 47 straight starts at Miami and played different spots along the line but mainly left tackle. He would be a perfect guy to groom to take over for McKinnie IMO.
offensive line
Thank you for bringing up Jason Fox. He is an overlooked player. He only missed two games last year, and he has recovered from the injury. He possibly can start at left tackle in the NFL. If not, he can at least back up the position. Thus, he would be a valuable Viking to have. Scouting reports say he would be a great fit for the zone-blocking scheme. While it’s unlikely that Fox could outplay McKinnie, he could back him up. With Artis Hicks gone, we need a backup left tackle. Fox could also backup Loadholt. In that way, Fox could conceivably threaten Ryan Cook’s roster spot, but Cook does have the verstaility to play guard or center. If McKinnie or Loadholt got injured, Fox would be a serviceable fill-in player. Could Fox eventually take over for McKinnie? There is an outside shot of that. But even if Fox is a career backup left tackle, he would fill an important role. Some fans might also appreciate Fox if they saw him as “pushing” McKinnie.
On Bruce Campbell, he is one of those workout warriors who never did anything in games. He is too risky in my opinion.
Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis have a lot of talent, but they are better suited for a power-blocking scheme. Iupati might be worth the risk in the first round, though. People have raised questions about the work ethic of Anthony Davis.
John Jerry is the brother of Peria Jerry and cousin to Dwayne Rudd. He is oversized for a Vikings guard. He might not be a good fit for the zone-blocking scheme. I don’t understand why so many Vikings fans like this guy. Maybe somebody could explain why he would be a good draft pick for the Vikings.

wow looked up Fox for a bit
And he does look like a solid player. Makes me wonder why he would ever drop to round three. I guess the injury may speak to that, but really in a draft pretty light on left tackles I’m suprised he’s not garnering more attention.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Bad idea man
Don’t see the upside to himon our team. I would have him starting behind Harvin. And that’s no good for us.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Well...
I was going to trade Barrian and my first and fourth for the Jags first and Derek Harvey. Then trade my second for Welker…
What is your reasoning for trading for Welker?
We sort of have a pretty good team here and our receivers were right up there with the best in the league last year. Getting the Jags pick would only be good if we could get Clausen or Bradford out of it.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Doesn't compute
1st round- DE Harvey- average 3 sacks per year
1st round- Safety
2nd round-slot receiver
3rd round- whoever
NO 4th round.
You have 4 players in 4 rounds. Harvey is a question mark. Since they play the same defense we do I have my doubts about him. He can’t sack. We use our DEs to sack.
You are getting a slot receiver we don’t need.
We have no Speed receiver to replace Berrian with.
You aren’t covering our O-Line needs
Why not just draft a Safety,G, WR and DE. You cover more needs and don’t lose an inexpensive fast WR. Use the draft. Great players will fall to you.

Do you realize that you have moved far enough in the draft to maybe get Clausen?
Now that would be worth the Jags trade!!!!!!

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well.
If he moved that far up it would only be to get Clausen. I would completley trade Berrian for him then pick up a WR in the second or third. Ah that would be a great dream but I don’t think the real Jacksonville owners would be as excited about that trade as the guy your talking to.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
I see that Clausen has fallen past #12 in your mock.
If he gets by San Francisco he should fall to Arizona and if they pass right to the Vikings.
I would try a trade with New England to insure getting him. Should just cost a 3&4 to move up to their position. Maybe even with the Eagles. That would be even cheaper. Or just wait and hope.
Good luck.

I’m not that high on Clausen, to be honest…. I think he’s way overrated. Better than Tebow, but there’s a couple real gems waiting to be snagged later on….

Snag a gem later or the real deal now?
I don’t want to debate Clausen again. But there are many good solid reasons behind his and Bradford’s high expected draft status. NFL scouting experts all agree these two have the highest chances of succeeding in the NFL. There are many flaws in the other QB prospects. Not just one or two. Many. That is why people who are paid well to scout do not find that the other prospects have a good chance to succeed.
Most QBs taken after the second round are really long term projects that are considered a success if they are a permanent back-up. If we have our chance to get a top guy we need to do it.
But I too can name you a couple of QBs that I would love to take late in the draft.

Bradford is head and shoulders above the rest of the class, including Clausen. The magnitude of difference is startling and depressing. I know Clausen is highly rated but after watching him in action, I’m not sure he’s a guy who will be ready in year 1 either, which doesn’t seem to make him such a great improvement over the rest of the pack.
I’m putting together a side-by-side comparison to post, hopefully later today. I think the Vikings will do pretty good with what’s available.

It should be interesting. I was watching some video of Drew Brees in college compared to Colt McCoy. I’m no expert but Brees looked very good and McCoy looked quick but not strong. Big difference. But who knows.

Agreed. Colt McCoy is amazing, but he doesn’t have a big frame to absorb hits. With Bradford, he might be fragile too, but at least now he has bulked up. With Clausen, while he looks sound, I don’t know what he is elite at. Accuracy? Release? Velocity? Not really.
by medicineball on Apr 3, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions
All of the above.
You are going to have to find me some scouting reports that say or show some weakness with his ability to throw the ball. He is rated very high for the out throw and crossing pattern in the WCO. His deep ball has good velocity. Accuracy is very good. The only thing I see that is against him is his “attitude” as defined by Todd McShay.
This is important and the "it " factor is a Big Big deal. I understand not drafting him if he doesn’t have “it”. But please find me something that would substantiate an arm that is not “ELITE”

Clausen
Clausen has performance stats, he’s one of the top rated QBs and he was throwing to one of the top rated WRs, Golden Tate. No doubt both of them have better numbers because of one another, but what do you see when you watch Clausen on the field?
Here’s what I see;
Clausen is strong, he’s accurate, he shows some good sense when he runs. He reads the college D and makes adjustments at the line. He’s not afraid to air it out. All good things.
But he’s not only throwing to one of the top-rated WRs in this draft, he’s also throwing from behind a superb offensive line which regularly gives him enough time to stop and make himself a cup of tea while waiting for Tate to get open.
Also, he telegraphs his target by staring it down and unnecessarily rolling out to get a clearer field of vision. This I don’t like, and it could be a nasty habit to break.
If he fell to the Vikings (unlikely), I don’t think he’d be ready to play this year. After a year behind Favre, maybe so. But I don’t think he’s a guy who can step into an NFL offense in his first year and run it.
I wish these guys’ GPAs were available. Wonderlic is ok but I’d like to see the GPA to give the Wonderlic some context.
BTW, still working on that QB comparison, it’s coming along nicely :) .

Still looking forward to it.
I don’t expect any QB taken to step in the first year for the Vikes. I expect them to maybe step in after one year. Only 4-5 QBs in history have had good years as Rookies. I’m looking for the future. Not the present. If we want Clausen we had better step up and contact Buffalo or the Raiders because Clausen just fell to #9 with McNabb going to Washington.

Your the GM.
You have to decide what trades are right for your team. We are just so use to bantering among ourselves we forget that others don’t realize that if the Vikings had no draft picks we could still contend for the SB. Hard for most teams to understand. It will be easier if we have some additions to the O-LIne, CB/S, DT, RB, WR. But we don’t have that special QB for the next ten years. You guys got Henne and he looks very good.
So enjoy yourself and make the Vikings proud.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Aye good luck
right now we’re just drafting for depth as we have good starters (think 11 went to the pro bowl) but we’re paper thin in some places so it would be very nice to see some people with skills sitting behind our starters. Also, we have a lazy LT and a 39 year old DT…

Here is a list of great available CBs.
> Chris Cook CB/ Virginia
> Dominique Franks CB Oklahoma
> Perrish Cox CB
Amari Spievey CB IOWA
> Donovan Warren CB Michigan
I think Franks is the best fit for the Vikings as a second round player although Cook and Cox are highly rated. Spievey is a zone player. He and Warren will probably be available in the third round. Myron Lewis is a projected 4th or 5th round selection.
Mike Johnson Guard- Alabama
John Asamoah- Guard from Illinois or John Jerry would be excellent pickups in the second round. Matt Tenant C/G from Boston College is also very good.
