Thyme for a Trade: Raiders Possibly Interested in Sage Rosenfels

Over at the National Football Post. . .who, incidentally, are now a partner of SBNation. . .they are looking at a few rumors from around the NFL.  Naturally, they talked about the Donovan McNabb trade rumors, but they included something that I had not previously seen or heard to this point.

A team executive told me the Raiders and Vikings are discussing the availability of backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels. Trading Rosenfels would only happen if the Vikings know for certain that Brett Favre is coming back.

The Vikings, if you'll remember, sent a fourth-round choice to the Houston Texans in last year's draft to acquire Rosenfels, who was then supposed to compete with Tarvaris Jackson for Minnesota's starting quarterback job.  The competition lasted all of one pre-season game, and then something minor happened that sent Rosenfels and Jackson both to the bench for the 2009 season.  Rosenfels was never actually a member of the active roster for any of Minnesota's games in 2009, so he basically made $3 million to wear a baseball hat, hold a clipboard, and cheer.

Nice work if you can get it.

No idea on what the potential compensation for any deal involving Rosenfels might be yet.  It would be nice to think that we could at least recoup the fourth-rounder we gave up last year, but I'd be surprised.  Then again, if we're dealing with the Raiders and we can get someone to tell Al Davis that Sage ran a 4.4 40-yard dash at some point in his career, the compensation could become a lot greater.

We'll have more on this story if anything new comes out about it.

This trade makes NO SENSE!

McNabb has a way faster 40 time than Sage!

If...

…We can get a 4th round pick back for him, I would do it in a blink.
For a 5th, I would do it in a couple of blinks.

I wouldn’t object against them putting Asomugha in the package too. LOL

Nnmandi Awesome-O 3000

would be great but probably won’t happen. Although, this is the Raiders we’re talking about…..

“Probably” won’t happen? Yeah, you could say that.

by Bodysuit Man on Mar 29, 2010 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Sage & the 2nd round pick for Asomugha.

When they say no counter with Sage & the first rounder.

Then sign the papers and make it official.

and then hear Wilf's pocketbook groan

because of Asomugha’s contract. Yes, it’s an uncapped year, but geeze that thing is ridiculous. If the cap ever comes back, we’d be royally screwed.

by Frost on Mar 29, 2010 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Then release Madieu Williams and draft, sign or mold a replacement.

Madieu Williams has proven to be average at best. Easily replaced. Dropping his 5 million per seaon would make it possoble to get Asomugha, financially.

Last year Madieu made 6.7 million(or so), not worth it. Ouch!

Mmmn

I’d be kind of hesitant about doing that. Just because he is, at the very least, a veteran. Just chucking in a rookie could make our secondary alot worse, ala how coverage declined when Johnson was in as opposed to Sharper in ‘09. I suppose Griffin could go back to safety then, but it’d mean Frazier would have to actually, gasp, play somebody out of their position.

by Frost on Mar 31, 2010 5:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Sharper did not fit the Vikings cover 2 scheme well.

He had only one INT and missed too many tackles. Sure he was much better this year with the Saints in a system where he could roam free, but Sharper wouldn’t have made the Vikes better had they kept him.

Did you watch Sharper last season with the Vikes. He was not good. The coverage last season wasent any better.

Do it.

This would create room for a younger quarterback on the roster, I’m sure Sage is ready for a new start somewhere else after coming here and ending up a third stringer.

Do it for a 4th!

The Raiders’ 4th must be a higher pick than the Vikes’ 4th rounder that they traded away to acquire Sage.

by KC Viking on Mar 28, 2010 3:00 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmmmmmm

This is interesting. If Favre were to come back? Why wouldn’t the Vikes hang on to him even then since Sage already would be guaranteed the $3 mill? Could this mean that there might already be something in the works to bring McNabb or Kolb here for next season and that they may already know that they have to sit behind Favre if he does return? While not likely, this is interesting none the less.

Sounds great to me.

1. It frees up cap space

2. The vikes arent paying 3 million to their third stringer

3. Tarvaris can stick around and eye roll continue to grow

4. We have a third string spot open for our QBOTF

5. We get a draft pick or some other young talent.

6. We can trade for Donovan/get McNabb in FA next year now that the eagles are stating publicly they will hold him until then.

We are the vikings.......resistance is futile.

by Hoss-Drone on Mar 28, 2010 4:00 PM CDT reply actions

If they trade him

it means Favre’s coming back, so there won’t be a McNabb trade. And who knows what will happen next year. The Eagles may franchise him to keep him there before they trade him for picks.

by Frost on Mar 29, 2010 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

OR...

they are making room for McNabb to mentor TJack.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Mar 29, 2010 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

That would seem kind of silly

A Favre-McNabb-Jackson depth chart? I mean, I guess it’d be looking towards the future, but if people were unhappy with Rosenfels getting paid 3 mil to sit on the bench, I doubt McNabb’s 10 mil is going to sit well either. It’s just the worst time for McNabb to be available.

by Frost on Mar 31, 2010 5:19 AM CDT up reply actions

it was mostly tongue-in-cheek…

McNabb is wanting to go to Arizona… this is not a good year for that move either.
He’s hinted and getting to AZ through Oakland…

The only reason the Vikes would move on him is to secure him for ‘Post-Favre’, and to lock him up for 4 years.
Perhaps an insurance policy for Favre… since it’s obvious that they feel Sage is expendable and TJack is only worth a 3rd round pick at best… McNabb might be nice to have around.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Mar 31, 2010 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

For a 4th???

This is a great chance to move up, get a quality CB and get a McCoy or Tebow in the 2nd.
Give them Jackson or Rosenflds and swap positions in the 2nd round. Duh. Raiders don’t lose a pick in the 2nd and we put ourselves in a very good position to pick up in two needed areas. I would pull that off in a heartbeat. I think the Raiders would also. Better than giving up a pick or taking a low rounder.
One blogger on Access Vikings hit it on the head “Funny, there was no mention of T-jax in this trade talk. Shows how much other teams see in his potential.”

If Sage could not beat out T-Jack, then what other choice do the Vikes have than to be rid of him.

by WVVikings on Mar 28, 2010 8:41 PM CDT reply actions

There is a reason T.Jack was the #2

Because Sage came in and wasent as good as they thought he woud be. If he can’t beat out T.Jack for the #2 spot than he is not worth keeping.

NO

It is they can get more value for sage than tjoke. We can’t even get a 3rd for tjoke. i would really doubt we can get any thing for him. Chilly is just to stubborn to admit he made a mistake with tjoke.

Nobody is giving the Vikes a 3rd rounder for Sage.

I hope I’m wrong and the low IQ Raiders do though.

I like the idea

But if we are gonna trade a QB, let’s get rid of TJ. I really liked what I saw out of Rosenfels in the preseason last year.

Neither T.Jack or Sage is all that good.

I’m not all too impressed by either.

But Sage can’t beat out T.Jack for the #2 spot it speaks volumes.

Favre

Once Favre decides, the Vikings can make a move on whether to keep Rosenfels or not.

I really like Rosenfels. If he is traded away, it would be almost a shame he never got a chance to do anything in a meaningful game. Ultimately, though, has hasn’t out-competed Jackson. I wonder if Rosenfels might not mind going to the Raiders, because he could start there.

by medicineball on Mar 28, 2010 10:21 PM CDT reply actions

This is more than a hint that Brett and McNabb are on the hook ????????

The Raiders are unloading their CB . If and only if we could get a restructured contract in the 12 mil range bye 5yrs……….Maybe a flip flop of picks in the 3rd is reasonable so we can target a QB . I believe Tarvaris at 10wins/10losses would be a good back-ub for the next 5years. Developing a QB 4th or less takes pressure off Brad. I like Snead in the 4th as a poss………………………………

Gary Cuozzo and Norm Snead fighting it out to QB the 1971 Vikings. I’m glad they had such a great defense that year or that team would have never seen the playoffs.

Extra picks

Was hoping someone would grab TJ for a 3rd…but Sage for a 5th or 6th is maybe the best we can do….but with the Raiders they may be willing to switch spots in the 2nd or 3rd and give up a late pick.
The Raiders CB would be great IF we ran a man coverage…we don’t so no thanks.

by vikefan1969 on Mar 29, 2010 7:34 AM CDT reply actions

Don't trade him for a 5th or a 6th

I don’t believe that there is any reason to trade Sage for anything less than a 4th round pick.

If Favre returns for 1 more year, then the organization will still prefer to hand over the keys to a veteran over a 1st year starter.

If McNabb is somehow acquired, same as above plus a lower likelihood of drafting a QBOTF.

If Favre stays retired (under no circumstances would the Vikings have both Favre and McNabb), then Sage and TJ could duke it out with a rookie and we get to see what Childress and Bevell are worth with 2-3 hand-picked QBs who are not Hall of Fame quality (and talent that they drafted at other positions). There could be no more excuses then.

by KC Viking on Mar 29, 2010 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree that there is no rush to trade Sag, from the Vikings’ perspective. There’s always 2011.

On the other hand, if I’m Sage Rosenfels, I would prefer to be on another team to have the chance to start. Of course earning a few million per year is not a bad gig. I think he’ll be just fine.

Didn’t he actually do a lot on the sideline? He was always showing Favre something he saw on film on the sideline.

sorry, misspelled his name.

by medicineball on Mar 29, 2010 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

This is a guess

but I think Sage must have a reputation as a coach on the field/bench sort of guy. I can’t remember hearing this much praise and trade interest in a guy who almost never plays since Gary Kubiak was in the league.

I think if I’m Sage, I bide my thyme on the Vikings bench rather than take a huge beating in a Raiders uni.
