Vikings Sign Defensive End Michael Montgomery
Per Tom Pelissero of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities, defensive end Michael Montgomery has passed a physical and has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings.
Montgomery was a sixth round pick of the Green Bay Packers in the 2005 NFL Draft. He played his college ball at Texas A&M, and started eight of 56 career games for the Packers. All eight of his starts came in 2008. That was also his best season, as he notched 59 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a pass defended.
And that's about all I know about Michael Montgomery. He'll be given an opportunity to add depth and versatility along the defensive line. He was drafted as a defensive tackle, but has also played some defensive end.
I'll try to dig up more info on Montgomery for tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of your night, folks!

Eh why not?
Seems like ex-packers seem to do well for us. He can be the Ryan Cook of our d-line. (the jack-of-all trades)
That was a joke btw, for anyone that reads the Strib blog.

That makes for our second big-name free-agent signing of the off-season [he says sarcastically]. I have no doubt it is a good pick and added depth to the defense of line, especially if Ray Edwards ends up leaving.
It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a Viking to raze a village.

Thanks!
I needed a chuckle just now :)
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
Why are we signing this guy?
He started 8 whole games – in 2008 – and we’ve signed him? Why is this Packers cast-off worthy of playing for the Vikings?
He probably is an insurance policy if Ray doesn't stick with the team
As well as someone to help spell the middle if necessary. Don’t know much about him other than he didn’t start for a fairly anemic Packers defense which worries me quite a bit.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

Defensive linemen can take time to develop, and maybe he takes his game to the next level with the Vikings. Even if he can be a serviceable backup, that gives us one more option behind Robison.
This might be a wake-up call to Jayme Kennedy. If he wants to stay with the team, he has to beat out Montgomery.

Competition is Good, Not Greed
Helps fight too-big-to-fail financial institutions and lazy people in camp at Mankato.
And Jimmy Kennedy
got cut from an anemic Saints defense. But as a rotational player, Kennedy is pretty damn good. I’m not saying Montgomery will be as well, but it could be they’ve found another gem amongst the FAs. Odds are against him though, and chances are he’s probably just some one to create extra bodies for back-up DLine training camp competitions.
Isn't he a country singer?
"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Were the Vikings the winning bidder at the Grundy County Auction?
Thank you, thank you, I’ll be here all season…please tip your bloggers.

They say it's a 3-4 thing
I guess he’s better suited to a 4-3 scheme. Probably just a warm body for camp, but you never know. Dept is never a bad thing. All I’ve heard is he wasn’t fitting into the Packer’s 3-4 defense.
That was basically the beef in GB with Montgomery. He was a decent backup and had some aspirations of being more while we were a 4-3 but just had no real place to fit in with the 3-4. He wasn’t big enough to be on the line and wasn’t athletic enough or talented enough to be one of the LBs. They cut ties and let him go where he wants.
Who reads the Strib blog???
Dangerous activity suspected of causing brain damage in lab animals.
It’s not like Judd is going to announce that the Vikings have discovered the Higgs Boson or anything.
Meh
If he really did not fit the 3-4 and does better her OK. Not a big deal either way. If he makes it and pushes Ray good. If he does not pan out it is not like we gave up a draft or anything for him. — They can also pump him for any info on last years defense whether he makes the team or not.
Think depth not starter
maybe Evans is being shopped ? Maybe he can offer us GB’s gap selections both at DE and DT ? It also offers confusion as to our draft needs. Example: I see GB is looking at the safety named Murphy just after we did . J. Mitchell could be getting looks. Extra picks for these developmental bodies would be nice. Montgomery fits Brad’s multi-positional standard and if healthy as I believe him to be is a solid pick-up. GB is desperate to find a pass rush. The cheapest way , because they are cheap , is through the draft . Which makes him a casualty we of course should capitalize on .
