Draft Tony Pike!! C'mon Mannn...
Forget Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy. If the Vikings want the QB of the future, then Tony Pike from Cincinnati is the guy. He can sit and learn the offense for a year or two reguardless who our QB is this season. He will be available at the end of the 2nd round, and the Vikings better pull the trigger on Pike. At 6’6” and 225 pounds, Pike can surely stand up to the pounding that he will get in the NFL. His height will allow him to easily see over his offensive linemen and get the ball down the field better. Pike is also well adept at sitting in the pocket, able to feel the rush and move around the pocket
accordingly. He has the Size, Awareness, Accuracy, and is Intelligence.
Since Chilly took over as general, every QB that we had could not get the job done, with the exception of Favre of coarse. But Favre is not our future. Draft Pike and our future will be bright. I GUARANTEE IT!!

Not Bad
I don’t think this is a bad idea. I live in Ohio and have watched a few Bearcats games. The boy can play and certainly has the size to see over our mountain range of an O-Line. The thing is that some people say he is just a Brian Kelly product. Look at how good his backup did when Pike went down.
ya boy, jgreeds
tj's tender
you find someone to take the old project so we can take another, stick to the running back DB issues 1st then consider the third hand issues chester is sitting in the windy city as we type ……….
We have running back back ups already in the wings for Chester
I would hate to lose him but I think if we have to, it’s not the worst thing that would ever happen to us.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
I think O-Line
needs more help than our backfield, but that’s just me.
I wouldn't be upset with Tony
But I would prefer McCoy or I hate to say it Tebow over him. I think Tebow is like Harvin, he might not end up as a QB but whatever position he gets into he will excell at.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
I cant see Mccoy translating to the pros
Just like Graham Harrell Troy Smith and Chris Leak who were all dominate players in college but were too short to excel in the nfl.

yea definitely
just looks at drew brees… he’s what? 7’3?
by hickenizgriz on Mar 5, 2010 10:56 AM CST up reply actions
Why is it that everyone talks about Brees yet
They dont mention Doug Flutie? That dude was like 5’5"!
I agree Grime
While I think Pike has an upside, he may be tooo “brittle” My only worry. McCoy would be the best bet and then Tebow. So much with Tebow that makes him every bit the gamble as T-jax joke. They were showing Tebow working out and I could actually seee improvements in his mechanics. Bottom line is -the kid listens and is not so high and mighty he knows he has to improve. Even Kiper was amazed that Tim was working and looking better. Good sign for me if I was in a position to draft him.
Then again, if they know (which I think they do) that Favre is coming back, by all means grab Pike in the 3rd. He needs to muscle up. I would be trying to swing a trade for T-jax right now. See if you can get a 3rd round pick for him. You then have Favre, Copter and then Pike as your #3 to learn and grow. Then again, Tebow might still be available at 3. One of these 3 is worth the gamble. Vikes need to make some choices. Do we go with Young and Johnson as our reserve RB’s and use Percy in place of Chester.? I personally like Percy in the slot. Get Westy.
See who can provide immediate help with the # 1 pick. I think Spikes would be an LB that could help. We can get corner help in FA if we act now. I don’t like CB’s and safeties that late in round 1. A rt guard or left side OT to take McKinnys place in a year.
This i a tough draft for the Vikings. I think one of thise 3 QB’s needs to be in there someplace.
Round one pick will depend on who is left. Some tough choices.

Pike
Tell one thing, I will take Pike as a project over that mutt T-Jack who will never be a top QB in this league.
I really hope some team takes him off our hands and gives us a 3rd round pick. Can’t believe we traded up for T-Jack. What was Chilly thinking?
Chester Taylor.
Yes Gothicpurple, Chester is in Chicago as we speak, and it looks like we will lose him. I wonder what direction the Vikings will go in trying to replace Chester.
Percy Harvin 'nuff said.
I suppose you can throw Albert Young and/or Ian Johnson in there if you’d like.
Honestly I woudl go with Albert Young
I don’t think Percy will be a valid pass rush defender and we used Chester a lot in that role. Young had an amazing 40 time (which will give us a speed back again since AD has slowed down with the extra size) and is said to have good hands. Also, from what I’ve heard he is good at blocking in the back field. Will he be another CT? Doubtul, but he could comeout and give our offense a different look next year.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
From what i've seen in the preseason...
I like albert young – very physical and is a natural at finding gaps – I would rather use him as our second rb then spend a draft pick getting another
by Loki The Viking God on Mar 5, 2010 11:01 AM CST up reply actions
Well you have to remember he was a draft pick at one time :D
Just because he’s behind CT and AD (was behind CT) doesn’t mean he’s bad. just means he’s got rediculous talent in front of him.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Percy is great but...
As a set back he is no Chester Taylor or Westbrook. Percy runs well out of the Wildcat and spread. He is a perfect slot guy who can come back for the run. If we played both him and AD in the same backfield like we should have done more with CT and AD it would be effective. I honestly think we have one more chance before we have to rebuild in a lot of areas. We have some needs but unless Favre returns we might not have a good as shot as we do now. Phat Pat will be gone, we have a MLB situation that is still up in the air (Brinkley did well but has bad knees and still had trouble with some adjustments)). We may have to go with Ian and young and have Percy the #2 back. Young is going to have to assume the 3rd down play and I don’t know if he could handle it. I would really like to see Westbrook in there for a couple years. It is a tough choice, but can we gamble on young and johnson when we are so close now?. Westbrooks experiance and reliability with catching the ball might be a better option than CT or our 2 young guys-if he can stay on the field an entire season. If he can, we have a duel threat that could be scary. We have some tough choices to make.
Are the Vikes going to make some FA moves or sit? We should be courting Robinson before he signs with Atlanta

very good analysis
I pretty much agree with it. Let me just kind of emphasize some points of my own.
On Jasper Brinkley, he did struggle with coverage. After his college injury, his knee is now healthy. He should have been drafted higher. Just because we got him the 5th does not mean much. Studwell was drafted in the 9th round. While I want us to draft Sean Weatherspoon if he falls to us in the 1st round, I don’t think we have an emergency at middle linebacker. Not by any stretch. I believe this kid Brinkley can be good. Maybe he can take a step up by the start of season. If we draft a linebacker, that guy should be able to provide depth at both MLB and OLB. Ideally, that player could become Ben Leber’s heir-apparent. Leber’s contract expires relatively soon, and I have speculated about him aging. I hope Leber plays great this year. He has so much on-field experience, he could be a force. Greenway is younger and improving.
On Westbrook, I see what you’re saying. My basic reasoning for generally going with the younger guys is this: championship teams typically have an injection of young talent on their team. On the other hand, teams that add a bunch of veterans, like this year’s San Antonio Spurs, often fail because they lack energy and chemistry. Westbrook is old and worn out. He can block and catch, but that’s it. Adding veterans is a risk because they could change the locker room chemistry.
Since that report came out that Young can pass-block and catch, I am on board with using him as the 3rd down back. If we keep everybody on the team, Harvin, Young, and Johnson can all spell Peterson as needed. We could give some carries to Tahi and Dugan. If we draft a running back, he would have to out-compete one of those guys.
Interesting
This QB sounds like a mix of Favre and Big Ben and is not one of the big names despite putting the Bearcats on his back this last season, this would be a good pick up for you.
I like Pike too, but at 6’6" and ONLY 225 lbs the last thing you say is he can surely stand up to an NFL pounding. He’s a beanstalk.
+1
He’s built more like a small forward than a quarterback in today’s NFL. Look for yourself:

He’s skinnier than Bradford! I also think Mardy Gilyard bailed him out quite a bit in Cincy.

Pike is terrible.
System qb.
Too skinny.

Hes shown that he can throw it deep and
he keeps his accuracy… But because of his poor combine showing, he’ll need an AMAZING pro day to get back into the 2nd round…
My guess is he will have a decent Proday, better than Tebows, and he will get scooped up by the Vikes in round 3 or the vikes trade down to grabe him in round four, whilst gathering picks…
From there he can go the Sam Bradford route and gain 15lbs of muscle.. (hell i’d take 10 lbs of fat.)
But if a Laputi falls to the vikes in rd 1, Vikes will take him. Since we lost chester, we will sign either Dansby or maybe try and convince Dunta to sign for the same as Chester… Or we can get Lito Sheppard since Chilly loves old Eagles….
If Iupati falls to the vikes
I’ll wet the bed. If we don’t take him I’m heading up to Minny with a barbie doll, rusty pruning sheers, 7 gerbils and a blow torch.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
I Just wet myself laughing at that...
But why the gerbils?
I can't see Iupati falling to us
and Dansby and Robinson are already gone :(
Well it was a hope, however, if we do trade Lewis it might give us a first round pick
Above the steelers (yeah I know I doubt it too) but if it did that’s the move I would make.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Unfortunatly
Dunta and Dansby are gone. But Lito sheppard, who isnt Great, but doesnt have to be, is still available. I highly Doubt that Kyle Wilson or even Domanique Franks will be there at 30. With the injuries to Winfield and Griffen, It would’nt hurt to have a Good Veteran come in and Teach Benny Sapp and Asher Allen a few things. And he can fill in for Griff while hes out and Rotate with Benny, Asher and Antoine. It never hurts to have to many of a good thing… As we witnessed last year with our WideOuts.
I'd love to have Colt McCoy
There’s no glaring durability issues, he started all four years in college, he has good accuracy and touch on his throws, and he’s more than likely going to be there by the time pick #30 rolls around. He’s certainly not a slam dunk by any means, but I think he’s a better prospect than Tony Pike.
no "glaring durability issues"?
McCoy has three knocks on him. Arm strength, height, and durability concerns. He will have to bulk up to play in the NFL, but he already is bulked up. If he can’t add much more muscle, he will be knocked out of games fairly easily. If you get injured in college, you’re more likely to be injured in the NFL.
I agree that McCoy is a better prospect than Pike.
What others say about PIKE
Over on the Denver SB website I was reading the followng discussion between their members on Pike. One of thier own was advocating for Pike as his first choice for a new QB.
QUESTION?
Pike has a shaky arm/health?
Really? I hadn’t realized that Pike’s accuracy was shaky when he was going 211/338 (62%) for 2520 yards with 6 ints over 10 games. Or perhaps you’re talking about the broken arm that kept him sideline for a couple games while the rod they put into healed up: as far as I know that has been his only injury, and he and the Cincinnati docs agreed to leave the rod in place until he was drafted and his future team decided what to do about the rod. Certainly not enough of a history to deem his health "shaky."

ANSWER
Um, yes?
In 2008 Pike missed 2 games and parts of 4 others with injuries including a broken left forearm – the same forearm he injured this past season. Missing 6 games and parts of 4 others in 2 years isn’t exactly an injury liability – but I think shaky is accurate especially when you re injure the same body part 2 years in a row.
Speaking of "accurate" – Pike isn’t terrible, but again "shaky" fits. Every report I’ve read has him missing high a lot and forcing balls in the middle. Here is an excerpt from Scout.com’s view of him at the combine.
"After a very solid set of practice performances during Senior Bowl week, much was expected from Pike during the throwing session at the NFL combine. Unfortunately, he didn’t deliver. Pike was all over the place with his accuracy and his throwing mechanics were poor. Quarterbacks who have poor or inconsistent mechanics will take power off their throws. Pike seemed to be changing his delivery for some reason on some of his "
Additionally, Draft Scout, for instance, says this about his tape:
Recognizes defense’s weakness and exploits it. Height allows him to survey the field and find second or third option when patient, but often bird-dogs primary option, allowing defenders to knock down passes or jump routes. Doesn’t recognize zone corners or safeties waiting for his late throws. Puts balls into traffic, putting his receivers at risk over the middle, or throws across his body over the middle when trying to make a play. Floats passes down the middle, allowing safeties into the play. Can throw before his receiver makes his break on out routes. Needs to sell ball and pump fakes better.
In case you were wondering, Draft Scout also says this about his injuries
"Durability is a major concern given his lanky frame and injury history. Missed four games in 2009 after needing surgery to replace a damaged a protective six-inch plate already inserted in his left (non-throwing) arm from a break occurring in 2008. "
I’m not trying to bully you or Tony Pike (who I liked in college) nor am I saying NFL Draft Scout and Scout.com are know-alls (though other sites have similar things to say). I’m just saying that I’ve read a lot and am obviously not as enthusiastic about Pike as you seem to be – especially in the middle rounds.
