Chester Signs With Bears!

Just reported that Chester signed on the dotted line with Chicago. 4 years 12 million I think it was. I can't believe the Vikings wouldn't have offered that or more.

Westbrook is the Vikings target now. I am sure of it. they didn't do much to keep CT so they must have a back up plan. That plan has got to be Westbrook. Hope if we do that Westbrook can stay out of the Doctors office.

Sucks

Why do I get the feeling that compared to last off-season, this one is going to be rough on us Vikings fans. Favre certainly wouldn’t tip his hand the other day on Leno, either. Sigh. :(

I really liked CT…I think it’s a HUGE mistake losing him for worn-out, injury-prone Westbrook. Ugh. That guy’s as washed up as LT. :(

Did Taylor Want to Stay?

I don’t follow off-season stuff as closely as some people, but did Taylor ever give any indication he would be willing to stay in Minnesota and play alternate to AD? CT’s a competitor, and those sorts of players generally don’t like sharing the load.

For that matter, did the Vikings make CT a serious offer, one that might have paid Taylor enough to forget he wasn’t the feature back in Minnesota? If they did, I missed it.

Myself, I never believed the Dream Team scenarios that had Taylor re-signing with Minnesota. Too bad, because he is a great player and was an important part of this past season’s playoff run. I’m not looking forward to seeing him twice a year in Bears colors.

Westbrook sucks

He’s too old and banged up now.

by medicineball on Mar 5, 2010 1:14 PM CST reply actions

Westbrook

Only for a pittance. He was a good player five years ago, but Westbrook is way past the peak of his career—way past.

Of course, Chilly loves those former Eagles, so who knows…

by Midnight Rambler on Mar 5, 2010 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

We havn't picked up Westbrook yet

So don’t borrow that trouble tell it gets here. However, Chicago certainly helped themselves Peppers and CT are going to be a big boost for their crap ass team. almost makes them a legitimate threat next year.

CT is getting 7 million in garuntee money off of a four year twelve million dollar contract. It’s amazing that the Vikes couldn’t match that, 3 million a year for him seems pretty cheap.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

Good news is we have that much wiggle room

for signing an UFA this year.

Running backs

as much as I hate losing Chester, we really need to work on our offensive line. Loadholt was a great addition but we still need help at both LT and C I believe. The NFC Championship game is proof of this weakness. Westbrook would be a great addition as he’ll only be getting 10-15 touches per game.

by mills423 on Mar 5, 2010 1:20 PM CST reply actions

you think we need help at LT and C?

While McKinnie might not be elite like we all once hoped, he is still a top ten LT in this league, and I thought Sullivan played very well in his first year. I have high expectations for him and really think that he can be our next Matt Birk. I think that our weakness is obviously at RG. Herrera showed us all a glimmer two seasons ago, but he disappointed this year. Herrera could be a top-level backup if we could get somebody else into that starting slot.

I tend to agree

A good run blocking guard on the right side would be a big help. Tho MCkinny is an idiot he did overcome the Carolina game and played well afterward. Sully has been a big surprize. Guard to go beside Load would be a great addition,

The O Line in UFA

Doesn’t look very promising. There’s a guard out of Seattle, and some tackles but most everyone is pretty long in the tooth.

draft

We will more then likely draft a RB in the 3rd or 4th round… after round 30, they are a dime a dozen, and if they have a good line, any RB can excel

by hickenizgriz on Mar 5, 2010 1:32 PM CST reply actions

Then why not just get one in the 7th round or go with the two guys we already have, Young and Johnson?

by medicineball on Mar 5, 2010 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

I'm just saying

If Spielman and company aren’t happy with Johnson and Young, that is what they will do. Not saying it will happen

by hickenizgriz on Mar 5, 2010 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

They are fine, but a guy like Ryan Mathews could really restore that 1-2 punch. Even if AD has another not so great year, he could provide the extra punch we need.

Comparison of Westbrook and Taylor

Westbrook’s stats last year:
8 Gp 61 rushes for 274(4.5 avg) 1 TD, 25 receptions for 181(7.2 avg) 1TD

Taylor’s stats last year:
16 Gp 94 rushes for 338(3.6 avg) 1 TD, 44 receptions for 389(8.8 avg) 1TD

I liked Taylor quite a bit but 7 million guaranteed in the first year of his deal is a lot for a situational player. If we pick up Westbrook I think our production from this spot is going to be about the same. I’ve heard that Westbrook’s second concussion last year was from returning to early from the first and is not that large of a concern going forward. The injury concern with him is more to do with his knee. If his knee passes a physical then he won’t be a bad replacement for Chester. Also heard on NFL network that the Vikings may be targeting a RB in the first round of the draft.

by CanadianViking on Mar 5, 2010 1:32 PM CST reply actions

interesting

I wonder who the Vikings might take. The only 1st round running backs are CJ Spiller, Jahvid Best, and Ryan Mathews. I hope it would be Mathews if it’s a running back.

by medicineball on Mar 5, 2010 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

Matthews was the guy mentioned

Personally, I’d rather OL or DB in the first and maybe RB in the second or third round.

by CanadianViking on Mar 5, 2010 1:55 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with you those the only RBs 1st round talent. I do not feel that the Vikes will be going with a RB. Then again who really knows what does through the dome of chilly.

I hope they don't go for a rb in the first would piss me off Chester could have set a deal

But the Bears are smart he’s a tough consistant RB. One of the best third down RB’s in the league paying 7 million up front clears them to only pay 1.5 million a year for the rest of his conrract.

by Grime on Mar 5, 2010 1:42 PM CST up reply actions

agreed!

Class act all the way. Happy for the ‘old’ fella… he can go out feeling like he followed the money.
He’s an improvement over Forte for sure – hope the Bears treat him with the respect he earned with the Vikings.

Not excited about facing him 2x per year for as long as he plays with the Bears.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Mar 5, 2010 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

I really don’t want to see Chester Taylor two times a year with the Bears. I’m interested to see what we do. Westbrook? LT? Draft?

by Skoaldybi on Mar 5, 2010 1:47 PM CST reply actions

Running Back Solutions

The Vikings have bigger needs (right OT, CB, a QB for the future) than a an alternate first-string running back, so I don’t see them using the first round pick on an RB.

Ian Johnson and Albert Young will get a shot, but I suspect Taylor’s slot will be filled by a free agent.

Heck, if AD fixes the fumbling issues (and I said IF) signing another RB wouldn’t even be a big priority.

by Midnight Rambler on Mar 5, 2010 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

I think you mean “left OT” but that is disputed. I think McKinnie is fine. We do have a need for general OT depth, if Hicks leaves and none of the guys from the practice squad can be an effective backup to McKinnie.

LT, AP, and Favre could form the Minnesota chapter of Chokers Anonymous. And Childress can finally add that trick play in which Favre hands off to LT, who promptly pulls his groin before dumping it to AP, who fumbles and then Favre picks it up and tosses a pick.

by KC612 on Mar 5, 2010 2:03 PM CST reply actions

Well it's Christmas over in WCG

They are some happy campers right now. Going so far as to say division champs for sure conference champs a maybe… Hope they enjoy themselves, I think it’s going to take more than what they picked up (and they picked up a lot ) to get them into that position.

At least Cutler will have a back who can block for him. Unfortunately for CT while the Vikes line wasn’t the best last year it was miles ahead of Chicago’s.

I Loved Chester.

I Hate seeing him go, but i wish him the best… He was darn awesome…. Heck, he should have been starting after Adrian got that 100-something MPH speeding ticket. Thats when alot of his fumbling issue REALLY picked up this season…. And AD should have been pulled after that 2nd Fumble in the Championship game… I dont want LT or Westbrook on this team… Neither will come close to what CT did. We need to draft a RB. Like Tony Gerhart… That kid can flat out PLAY. And we can get him for cheeper and Longer than an LT or Westbrook… Course we could make a play for Sproles! Ha justkidding!

Leon Washington

Perfect fit. Like Taylor, but can return punts too.

by NOVAviking on Mar 5, 2010 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

Former Bears/Jets RB Thomas Jones

Get Jones, cheaper than Taylor (though i will definitely miss him) and had a productive year last yr (1400 yrds!!). We can sign him since we lost Taylor. Westbrook is broken and LT is broken down. Thomas Jones is the answer.

Skol Vikings!!

2nd place

Looks like the Bears got Julius Peppers today too…Finally some competition with Green Bay for second place in the NFC North!

by MAJTwister on Mar 5, 2010 4:21 PM CST reply actions

Aaron Rodgers can’t be happy: He’s still got Jared Allen twice a year, and now Peppers 2X and Kyle Vandenbosch (+ maybe Suh/Gerald McCoy) 2X… I think the Packers better draft a lineman.

by medicineball on Mar 5, 2010 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

That glass is 3/4 full and 1/4 empty

because the Vikes have to face Peppers twice a year too. I remember what happened the last time. It wasn’t pretty.

by JethroBoViking on Mar 6, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

Chester wanted to play

In Chicago he has a chance to be the man. Here all he ever was going to be was AP’s backup. Westbrook or LT could fill in for a couple of years. Hate to see him go but he had to do whats best for himself. Apparently the money was worth more to him than a shot a championship. I hope Daniel Snyder takes away the Pepper’s option from the Bears. We don’t need to see that guy twice a year either.

by iowaron on Mar 5, 2010 4:44 PM CST reply actions

So much for the Peppers option.

The Bears are going for it. This division is getting tougher by the minute.

by iowaron on Mar 5, 2010 4:49 PM CST reply actions

Taylor did a decent job for Minnesota, was very professional about losing the starters’ job he signed on for, and I’ll even say he was better than his numbers to the team (his numbers aren’t that fantastic). From a fan perspective, he represented a steady hand alternative to Peterson’s increasingly frenetic play. And if Peterson’s fumble issues turn into a Chuck-Knoblauchian, career-threatening mental block, maybe they’ll be in trouble, here.

But Taylor WAS overpaid, and I’m happy the Vikings didn’t match the offer. Before I get deemed a heretic, re-read the first paragraph. It’s just in the cap era (I know, this year’s an exception), you just can’t build a perfect team, and therefore you can’t pay a 3rd down back/clearcut secondary guy that kind of scratch. I wish him luck in 14 games this coming year.

So now what? In-house they have Johnson and Young. I prefer Johnson, personally, as Young seems just sort of “meh.” But who knows? Paul Allen’s mentioned they like Clemson’s RB CJ Spiller, so if he falls maybe they make a move there. But who knows? A mid-to-late round RB would have to be compared to Johnson/Young.

by jianfu on Mar 5, 2010 5:26 PM CST reply actions

Figured he was going to leave, just wish it wasn’t for the Bears.

Man all of you are being super unrealastic

Brian Westbrook isn’t washed up and has more left and his tank i dont really understand what have that theory stuck in our head… Yes he’s injury prone but at a limited role he can surely excel at wat C.T. was doing here. Heck he beat us just two years ago in the playoffs on an amazing effort on that screen… What do you people Have against Brian really.? Are you just really frustrated of the lost of C.T. and that is blinding you of what B.W. brings to the table? or is it that you just afraid he’s more injury prone and thats the excuse of why you think B.W. isn’t good anymore?

Favre + 3 = ❼ = Vikings= 2009-2010 NFL Champions= New Stadium=Greatest Fans and Team!

by UnBannedVikingholic on Mar 5, 2010 7:38 PM CST reply actions

I don't think he's washed up at all

he’s still really good when he’s on the field
but that’s the thing, he needs to be on the field
he’s going to ask for a decent-sized contract, and we have to figure out if it’s worth it
Personally, I think if he’s only going to be our third-down guy, he’ll manage to avoid injury

From the only TRUE North division

Agreed.. it's all about mileage

+1

Naysayers seem to forget that BW only became a full-time starter in 2006. His mileage comparison to LT is apples to oranges. Career carries 1300 … vs. 2900!!! If he checks out medically, his tank is more than full to me. RB careers are dictated by wear and tear (and significant injuries) more than any other factors.

BW could give us nearly twice the production of an LT on our roster. And don’t get me wrong, I LOVED me some LT in his prime.

by BleedingPurple on Mar 8, 2010 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

Injury-prone

Berrian checks out medically all the time… then he runs down the field and injures himself without even being touched. Don’t put too much faith in a medical check out, Westbrook’s history is not encouraging.

I hope he does well.

I suspect when the Bears meet the Vikes that our defense will have seen him many times before.
Its a lot of money for an older RB. I understand why the Vikes had to let him go.
