Should we wait on Favre or should Favre wait on us?

Catchy title Eh? Haha I think so to.  But I'd like to let eveyone check out this article from Twin Cities:

Tom Powers: Time for Vikings to do what they must to bring back Brett Favre for 2010 Brett Favre can take all the time he needs. It's the Vikings who need to get moving and bring back the quarterback. Pioneer Press
Updated: 03/08/2010 09:21:54 AM CST
Brett Favre on the sidelines (Pioneer Press, file)

Relax. If Brett Favre decides not to return in 2010, most of these mediocre free-agent quarterbacks still will be available. Plus, there isn't a college player in the upcoming draft that could step in and play the position immediately. So unless you want to get involved in the Donovan McNabb sweepstakes, what's the rush?

Allow Mr. Favre all the time he needs. And make sure a club employee is in Hattiesburg to peel grapes, wash the truck, gut deer, scale fish and otherwise tend to whatever else Mr. Favre might need.

Everyone has it backwards. It's time for the Vikings, not Favre, to make a commitment. The Vikings need to show how serious they are about improving the team in 2010. Based on how that goes, Favre will make his decision.

The guy was a miracle-worker last season. He was supposed to come here and hand off to Adrian Peterson. Instead, he ended up taking over the show and leading the Vikings to what should have been a Super Bowl triumph. Minnesota would have been in the Super Bowl if not for having 12 men in the huddle after a timeout late in the NFC title game. The penalty pushed Ryan Longwell out of winning field goal range with regulation time about to expire, and from there a battered Favre could do no more.

As it turned out, the Indianapolis Colts were beatable. That NFC championship game against New Orleans turned out to be the ultimate "what if?"

When I last saw Favre after the Saints game, I thought there was no way he'd be back.

Advertisement He was a physical wreck. It's not so much that the offensive line was a disaster, although clearly it is overrated, but more that Minnesota had trouble protecting Favre from blitzes all season. And at 40, Favre couldn't slide around in the pocket the way he used to.

But the fact that he even is considering playing another season is good news. There isn't a free-agent quarterback out there that could come in and perform nearly as well. Meanwhile, several teams already have expressed interest in acquiring McNabb from Philadelphia. The price will be very high. And when it comes to handling pressure, McNabb is the anti-Favre.

All this worry about being able to plan for 2010 is silly. Any number of quarterbacks should be able to get the team into the playoffs. The question is: What happens after that? I think everyone knows the answer. And it isn't pretty.

Meanwhile, the upcoming draft features at least a half dozen, and as many as 10, quarterbacks with solid NFL potential: Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Florida's Tim Tebow, Mississippi's Jevan Snead, Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen, Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour, West Virginia's Jarrett Brown and Texas' Colt McCoy probably top the list. The Vikings could get a real quarterback of the future in the second or third round.

It would be a bonus if that kid could study under Favre for a year. That would help set the position for the foreseeable future.

Favre's delay in making his announcement has nothing to do with money. He's got more than he'll ever need. Instead, he no doubt wants to see if the Vikings improve themselves enough to make another Super Bowl run. Favre had to do too much last season. And already several important players from the '09 team have departed via free agency.

If the Vikings really want to hurry him along in his decision-making process, they should make a splash by acquiring a big-name player or two. The team likely can improve its fortunes on defense through the draft. Offensively, a replacement for Chester Taylor is a priority. So is another blocker. A high-profile wide receiver would be terrific. Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin are a good start. Bernard Berrian was mediocre. Everyone else was less than that.

There was a report that Brad Childress already has been down to Mississippi to check on Favre, but that the two didn't discuss next season. Yeah, they probably exchanged gumbo recipes. Maybe they even set the spittoon 30 feet from the porch swing and had a contest to see who could nail it most often.

I'm sure Childress knows exactly where he stands with Favre. It's all about improving the team. The guy doesn't want to come back and take another beating for nothing. The bottom line is that it's time for the Vikings, not Favre, to get going. He remains their best option for 2010. And it's up to them whether he comes back.

While waiting on Favre's answer, should the Vikings be heavily active in this off-season acquiring Big Names and not Name Brands that could help Favre decide to come back?
Yes, we only need to add depth however.

A.I. IS BACKKKKKKK

by eagleswin on Mar 8, 2010 5:20 PM CST reply actions

We will take him...

I mean, it’s not like he has had a career QB rating of 86 or anything…

Or that he was still able to perform well despite the poor treatment of him by the Eagles fans.

Or that he has 6-7 years left in him.

Or that a legitimate starting QB is tough to come by these days. Good luck with the Kolb experiment, we will enjoy McNabb to the fullest should he come.

by Bjorno on Mar 9, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

Yea

He will look good until he has a bad game, then all your fans will turn on him like you all do every time.

Then with all your fans ragging on him day in and day out, he will get tired of all the BS and want to go somewhere else just like McNabb.

Your fans are never happy with what they have, even when it is a great product.

Wait on him.

Focus on depth and draft a young quarterback. If he comes back he obviously starts. If he doesn’t then give Tarvaris his final chance (finally).

In AP I trust

Tarvaris had his chance

Then he had another chance then ha failed at it every time and he had to bail him out twice, once with Gus Frerrote for God’s sake. Don’t give TJ another chance, he’s had enough of them.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 9, 2010 8:12 AM CST up reply actions

We would be fools to not give the young quarterback Tarvaris another chance.

by medicineball on Mar 9, 2010 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

WHy would we be fools?

Because this time he’s going to not choke on the pressure? This time he’s learned how to throw a pass while keeping his feet on the ground? Maybe this is the year he aims for people hands and not their shoes. TJ led a winning team in spite of himself, not because of himself (that sounded awkward.)

He might be a great guy I don’t know he seems it, but I’ll take a page out of Carolina’s book. Delhome is a terrific person, an awesome leader and truly just one of the nicest people you have ever met. Also, he has in the past shown he can play football. However, he still needed to get cut. He wasn’t ‘old, he shouldn’t have been washed up, however, his play did not belong in the NFL. Neither does TJ’s. I’m sure they will both be good back ups for a long time.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 9, 2010 8:49 AM CST up reply actions

Because closing the book on a young QB is just plain stupid.

It’s not like he is saying we should hand the reins to him and say “Good Luck”. But we should still give him an opportunity to at least show what he can do after learning from old man Favre.

Tarvaris was thrown to the wolves in his rookie year, when he should have never seen the field for at least 3-4 years. That will dash a guy’s confidence rather quickly. Confidence is almost as important as talent, if you are second-guessing throws you can’t get the ball where it needs to be. That is all Chilly’s doing. He put the guy in too soon.

There is no guarantee that Tjack will flip the switch and figure it out, but there is nothing that says he absolutely cannot.

by Bjorno on Mar 9, 2010 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

It definitely wouldn’t hurt to keep Jackson around. Worst case scenario, he becomes the back up QB.
Jackson proved he can play when he has decent WR’s. Before last year he was throwing to T. Williamson, Aundre Allison, Robert Ferguson. It’s no wonder they couldn’t move the ball through the air…Not to mention Chilly’s predictable play calling.
IMO Jackson has more up-side than Rosenfels, and I bet the Vikings could keep Jackson for around for pretty $cheap$

by chaosg on Mar 9, 2010 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

Your right he might flip the switch

and he might not do it for a nother 2-3 years. should we wait until he does and just play castoffs until he finally realizes his potential (no idea where that is) ?

He might not be a great fit for our team. He might excell in a simpler offense with more need for their qb to run and gun it. I don’t know. However, I dont’ really feel like watching him flounder about for the next 2-3 years trying to figure it out either. That is pretty much my issue with him right now he can be on this team until his teeth fall out, as long as he’s not playing I’m good with it. Hell toss him to the practice squad it will be interesting to see if anyone else woudl be interested in him, plus it would get him out of what has to be a bad place for him emotionally right now.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 9, 2010 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

His contract is up this year as I understand it.

We’re not gonna keep him around 2-3 years and THEN decide. That decision will be made sometime in the next year, one way or another.

by puddnhead on Mar 10, 2010 2:03 PM CST up reply actions

Why not?

He will be cheap to resign, as nobody else but the Raiders will likely make him an offer.

by Bjorno on Mar 12, 2010 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

No, we keep him around and see if he figures it out. Until that point we obviously need to be looking for “The Guy”.

He is not going to be expensive to resign, and if he stays he is only going to be guaranteed a backup spot. He is a good backup QB and can probably serve as a 1 year option if needbe.

by Bjorno on Mar 12, 2010 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

Then who’s our backup plan?

In AP I trust
F-A-R-V-A =/= F-A-V-R-E

by FarvaForTheVikings on Mar 9, 2010 8:37 AM CST up reply actions

backup plan

Backup plan for backup quarterback: Sage Rosenfels

Backup plan for quarterback of the future: somebody we draft this year, and maybe somebody we draft next year.

by medicineball on Mar 9, 2010 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

He deserves a chance w/

Percy Harvin, a healthy Sidney Rice, a Shiancoe who can catch and a full playbook.

by KC612 on Mar 9, 2010 9:44 AM CST up reply actions

Because all the other times

He didn’t have anyone? Sorry man Harvin can’t catch with his shoes. He had AD running 2k a year which should be any QB’s wet dream. If you have 8 or 9 in the box a semi decent QB will be able to make plays more often than not. TJ wasn’t consistant enough to do this. The playbook wasn’t parsed because Childress didn’t understand it. it was nuetered because TJ didn’t master it. The sad part is the coaches themselves have realized he’s not the man anymore, it’s time to cut bait people.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 9, 2010 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

No.

Because he had guys like TWill and Shiancoe who couldn’t catch a cold. Marcus Robinson and Bobby Wade hardly inspire confidence either. Rice was banged up as well and didn’t do a damn thing. By now they should be able to run the entire playbook giving him all the weapons needed to succeed.

by KC612 on Mar 9, 2010 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

Or in Troys

case couldn’t catch a pass if it hit him in the facemask.

by Grime on Mar 10, 2010 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

Really Shiancoe did terrible this year

Your right it’s the receivers fault. Don’t worry about the running game we had that should have even made a bad qb look decent (oh it did). I’m not sure how receivers mess up their routes so bad that their shoes are where their hands should be. Maybe it’s because they were 10 yards to deep on their routes. You should definitely fire their coach if he can’t fix that… I bet his jump passes were probably their fault as well, and the startled deer look or the please coach take me out speech he gave Childress.

Hey your right, he’ll be kick butt this year. Problem was that in the preseason I saw him making the same exact mistakes he had made the years before. Maybe a year behind Favre is miraculous, but I doubt it. If that were the case Sage should be awesome too.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 9, 2010 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Shiancoe

much like Rice didn’t really come on until this past season. Yeah, some of that was due to Brett Favre, but a lot of it was due to them being in the offense another year and putting in hard work over the offseasonl.

by KC612 on Mar 10, 2010 7:59 AM CST up reply actions

whatever man, it's all good

I have come to an understanding that I may be wrong about TJ, and if i am I will stand convinced, however, I will never convince some people that TJ just doesn’t have what it takes to succeed in the NFL.

I may be wrong as well

but it’s highly unlikely. :D

We won't have confirmation on Favre

until we see him throwing to the high school kids in Hattiesburg. :)
Favre didn’t get here until August last year, so I don’t expect anything different from him this year.

cali viking

we dont need to pressure him we just need to get a better o line and a R B then favre will come back he will come back theres to much left on the table he knows this team is ready for the super bowl he will b back for revenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by cali viking on Mar 8, 2010 7:44 PM CST reply actions

another receiver

would sweeten the deal for Favre. there’s got to be a great WR that makes it through till the end of round 1 or 2

by thankyouforblaze on Mar 9, 2010 4:16 AM CST reply actions

Our receiving corps is the least of our concerns

Rice, Harvin, Shiancoe all had goos years. Berrian under-performed but he still has it in him. O-line, a third down back, DT, CB and DE if Edwards ends up leaving should all be addressed before we get another receiver. Who do you think we are, The Lions?

by keomr on Mar 9, 2010 4:52 AM CST reply actions

Offensive Linemen. 2 Each.

That’s what the Vikings need to bring in, be it via FA or the draft, they need to bring in 2 known, very good O-linemen before the year begins.

If they don’t, Favre would be a fool to return, knowing that he’s just going to get beat up again.

This is how the Vikings show Favre that they’re serious about doing a better job protecting him, and making a better run for the Lombardi.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

He's going to take hits

and will have to get back up like he always has. Hopefully with an improved line he will take less…

by KC612 on Mar 9, 2010 9:46 AM CST reply actions

Agreed...

Favre would be a complete fool to make a decision prior to draft/free agency signings.
We need to address our O-line issues and improve our secondary.

Favre knows football.. Probably better than most coaches and veteran players. If I was Chilly, on any visit with Favre I would ask, where do you feel we need the biggest improvement? Does the O-line need to be improved, or does the secondary need to be improved?? Which one should take more focus..

There are about 4 variables that Favre will probably want to review prior to returning.
1) Free-Agency.. Who do we lose, who do we gain? In the end, are we better than 09 or worse-off?
2) Draft – Where did we draft to imrpove our team? Did we go BPA or did we just fill our needs?
3) Schedule – How will the regular season games land… Will most of our harder games be at home? Will most of the teams that are cold-weather be at home? How many outside late season cold games will we have?
4) Health – Which is probably my least concern as a fan. I know he’ll feel healthy enough to play around that time, but the prior 3 things have to fall into place to help Favre decide. If he’s going to take a beating, healthy or not, he may decide to not come back. But if he’s on the edge of should I/shouldn’t I? — The health at the moment could be a deciding factor.

Favre proved he can play, Favre seems like he never really wants to give up playing, and those are all great reasons for him to come back. He may not even have as great of a year as he did his first year as a Viking…. But at the helm of QB — he is our best option, and we all know it.

by Deek on Mar 10, 2010 10:36 AM CST up reply actions

Lol

Moss would not come here

"And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you!"

by Vikant on Mar 11, 2010 2:14 AM CST up reply actions

He does have unfinished business....

And he does have 1 year left on his contract. — And he is up there in age. His recent season, due to a shoulder injury (I believe) has hindered his performance.

I think…. If we were not able to get Moss — we should pursue a big name receiver…
Wouldn’t be nice to have TO or Ocho? Give Favre weapons…

That’ll ensure a return.. We’ll just be some high-scoring offense with a hopefully above average defense that can get the job done.

by Deek on Mar 11, 2010 8:45 AM CST up reply actions

Actually, I would love having ocho on the team

well… it was a 4th quarter TD and the game was already decided.
it was in good form for him not to ‘act out’ at that time.
