REPORT: Vikings "have interest" in LT

Check this out Fellow Viking fans:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/08/vikings-appear-to-have-interest-in-ladainian-tomlinson/

It's not finalized, but I'm wondering if this is even a good thing or a desperate move to cover for losing Chester Taylor (who is, at this point, clearly better than LT, esp. for 3rd down pass-catching/blocking).  LT's number's suggest he has little athleticism left; but more-so I'm worried about his attitude /baggage.  This is the guy who less than a year ago (!) said he was still the best RB in the League (which was/is laughable actually), and that he was specifically better than AD; and now we're thinking of asking him to back up AD?

For more evidence, check this article out:

http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/02/22/ladainian-tomlinsons-options-may-be-few/

"I don't know that he has anything left," one NFC executive said. "I'd be hesitant to sign him."

"Tomlinson rushed for just 730 yards in 14 games and had a paltry 3.3-yard rushing average in 2009 and was, by most accounts, a high-maintenance player in his final two seasons in San Diego. He needed constant reassurance from Chargers coaches and front office people that he was still the cornerstone of their franchise"

"You have to understand, with L.T, you're not just signing the player. You're taking on the whole package," [read: EGO] an AFC personnel executive told FanHouse.

Ugh.  I read quotes like this and I like this (potential) move less and less.  This guy has not been a top RB in a while, and even when he was, he notoriously choked /was-hurt in the playoffs.  I just don't know about this...I'm worried the Vikings' brass are buying into (or trying to sell fans on) the LT "name" instead of looking at what the player actually has left (seemingly not much).

So I ask you guys, could getting LT be a good thing?  Or is this a potentially terrible move for the Vikes?

I see your point. If he comes in with a good attitude and wants to win a super bowl and realizes what his role with us is he could be a good fit. However I would much rather see Thomas Jones in the Purple and Yellow.

Thomas Jones

Would not be good if Favre comes back. Just less then a year ago he was the guy that was mainly bad-mouthing Favre from their Jet days. I don’t know how that would go over but by strictly talent alone it’s a no brainer I’d rather have Jones.

I love Twins Baseball and Minnesota Vikings Football.

B.W.

Get B.W. he’s used to Chilly and the offense and seems more valuable to me, but from the Vikings point of view their thinking they need someone who’s gonna replace C.T. for the whole season not parts of it because of injury! So that’s why L.T. may be more interesting to the vikes!

He will last longer than Westbrook.

But I am not too keen on the idea.

Yes, it would be cool to have LT and AP line up together. But it is more of a novelty than anything practical.

That would be nice if they brought in a kick-off specialist. I like the idea of forcing the Touchback. Especially with our ST’s….IDK who they would cut to make room for Kick specialist, but if they can make room, then they should.

How about…. Garrett Mills?

Not that I don’t love the idea of carrying 4 TEs again, but really.. how about Garrett Mills?

Incredible to realize

Chilly started a little feud with Belichick, over Garrett Mills…. WTF was the thinking?!

An aside, on a team with pass-happy Favre spreading the ball as far as wide as he could, Mills was the only TE to not catch a single pass last year. Even Dugan got some Favre-love!

I think Tahi took that ball home with him :)))

That was one of my favorite moments of the season, watching Tahi after he made his very first career touchdown… man, the look on his face was pure joy, he was so excited and happy. He was still clutching that ball as he was moving through the sidelines, everyone congratulating him and slapping his back.

Thank you, Brett Favre.

Westbrook

Even with the injury concerns, I’d take Westbrook over Tomlinson at this point. Westbrook is more accustomed to sharing a work load, is familiar with the offense and is has a diverse enough skill set to still be a contributor in lots of ways. Blocking, spelling Adrian and receiving (from the backfield and slot) make him a dangerous player still and the fact that he will be seeing Chester’s 9 touches a game greatly increases his chances of staying healthy IMO.

LT has Michael Jordan written all over him. He was great but can’t seem to let go of the past and move on, nor does he seem particularly inclined to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of stars.

by Cobra312004 on Mar 9, 2010 2:20 AM CST reply actions

If he’s Jordanesque, I will take him.

by medicineball on Mar 11, 2010 11:30 AM CST up reply actions

Why?

Would would they let very good RB who’s familiar with the offensive scheme (Chester Taylor) go, only to use that money to sign an old, washed-up reject RB from the AFC who’s ego makes it difficult for him to fit through normal-sized doors?

people please!!

you sit and talk crap one minute then we sign a guy like this then all of a sudden you love his. don’t be pathetic. i said before westbrook may be posturing, he also may have admitted that he can’t make the required cuts with the knee yet as clayton said a month from know may offer a better accessment. LT was starting to show improvement in december. eight intence more months of rehab along with the fact he took very few hits with limited carries. screens, draws, and dump off passes are all we saw from chester. LT catches a wider variety passes. some one show the career catches for both these 30 yr. olds i’m sure it’s a blowout in LT’s favor. you all excepted farve may have had a limited role and then he exploded. LT has that potential in 6 months . we need that RB draft pick for DB’s and lineman. dream on if you think farve can’t utilize LT for percy’s 5 touches a game as harvin will be excellerated this fall. feedback please.

by gothicpurple on Mar 9, 2010 7:46 AM CST reply actions

A 40 year old QB has more left on the tires than a 30 year old RB who has carried their team for the last 6 years.

Besides, it has nothing to do with his remaining talent and everything to do with his overblown ego.

by Bjorno on Mar 9, 2010 11:11 AM CST up reply actions

Personally I would go with LT over BW

He’s more durable and you’re going to need a back all season long not just the 6-8 games his body lets him play. LT with limited carries could be very good for us. LT resenting his limited carries could be very bad for us.

I think that’s all anyone is trying to say.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 9, 2010 8:43 AM CST reply actions

I don't think Westbrook should even be in the discussion

Yes, LT before BW, but LT brings a lot of issues with him…..

Young is starting to look better and better, even as a totally unknown quantity, than one of the rejects. The Bears could have pursued LT, but they didn’t, did they…. no, they went after the guy who had lots of gas left in the tank, the guy the Vikings let go.

I agree I just wish I would have seen more of Young last year

So we would all have a better idea how he will work out in the pro’s.

Here’s a questoin, if you had your druthers and could only get one of these players which would you choose? LT, or Gaither the LT from the Ravens…

Gaither

If it’s straight up, for this year’s #1 draft pick, yes. Grab Gaither and run like hell. 6’9", 340 lbs of Man-Mountain, he’d fit in nicely with the Viking’s O-line. He may not be all-pro, but he looks to be solid and he’s young enough that he’ll only improve over the next 10 years.

LT durable?

I seem to remember him having numerous little nagging injuries one which kept him out of a playoff game. I’d rather we went with Albert Young or Ian Johnson. Both LT and Westbrook can finish off their careers somewhere else.

by Grime on Mar 9, 2010 9:55 AM CST up reply actions

LT might be a good free agent to get

First, I am in favor of making AD the true #1 running back for the season. If he fumbles, keep giving him the ball. After a fumble is when he gets mad and runs even better. Give him the ball a lot. Give him the ball regardless of field position. Furthermore, if AD runs for 35 yards, don’t take him out of the game for the rest of the offensive possession, like Bevell has been doing. Sure, he is a bit tired then, but so is the defense, and AD is in better physical shape than most of the other players on the field. After that 35-yard gain, keep giving it to AD.

But what if AD gets injured, or becomes ineffective, or starts to wear down? Who will we turn to in the playoffs? The same dilemma confronted the Chargers for years. They would use LT to get into the playoffs, but by then, LT was so banged up that he was limited, and sometimes had to sit on the bench during his team’s biggest game.

If we go with AD in the regular season, and then start giving the ball to LT more down the stretch, one or both will be fresh and healthy for the playoffs.

LT would have to adjust to the zone-blocking scheme, but as a veteran, he can do that. He has good vision and would fit. I guess LT is not great at pass-blocking. If that’s true, Albert Young can be third-down back for the entire season and postseason.

If we sign LT, we can make him the #2 running back, but not use him much until late November or December. Sure, he’ll want a lot of carries, but just remind him that the Vikings want him healthy for the stretch run.

Another benefit is mentoring. With LT on the team, AD would finally have someone he could relate to as an elite running back. This could help AD and our other younger running backs.

The only problem with signing LT is making room for him on the roster. If we do that, Ian Johnson might have another year on the practice squad. The thing is, Ian Johnson might be better than LT at the current stages of their respective careers, but Johnson is not a proven commodity. LT should replace one of the receivers or tight ends, leaving a roster spot for Johnson.

If we had AD, LT, Young, Johnson, and Harvin all taking carries, sometimes in the same game, that would be an incredible juggernaut of a rushing attack. Maybe they give the fullback some carries, too.

i think that we should take young over johnson, Johnson is a great player, but unfortunately he will always be the number 3 or 4. I do believe that young has more talent, and there is always percy. I think we should release him, and let him compete for a starting job elsewhere, he does deserve to be at least a back up, just like young. (but still grab LT, a few years with him won’t hurt anyone)

LT vs BW

I am a firm believer that LT does in fact still have some juice left in his tank, as does BW. But the problem I see here is scheme related. BW has mastered this offense before and his unique set of skills make him ideal for use as a 3rd down back. LT possesses the skill set of more of an every down back, much like AP. 5-7 years from now do you really think AP would make a great 3rd down back? No. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be useful in a clear RB by committee approach. Thats exactly where LT is best utilized. Somewhere like, say, Houston or New Orleans where they don’t really have one bell cow and would prefer to split the carries amongst a group of backs. BW, on the other hand, needs to sit behind a nearly complete player and only come in on 3rd downs to compliment him. Which is exactly the situation we have here.

I’m conflicted, on one hand if LT’s ego is still massive and he tries to do too much or ends up being a locker room problem, then it will go horribly. On the other, he might actually still have some juice left in the tank. If he signs here, i’m hoping for the latter, not the former

Its impossible to know what a player is thinking.

LT can have his thoughts and they can be totally different than what the media reports.
I don’t think we are going to hire a 30 year old RB with diminishing skills. We did not re-hire CT and he showed little in diminishing skills.
If we do hire LT I think it will set back our future. We can draft another young RB now to groom for the future. I trust that our Front Office is smart enough to know what we need. If they take on LT they will know he does not have an attitude problem.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Mar 9, 2010 1:50 PM CST reply actions

Good point but as Jay says

How will he contribute to the team? Is he a blocking back? How is he so different from AD? AD used to be a speedy powerful back but now I would consider him power all the way. LT and AD’s running styles are actually pretty similar so unless we’re just running them so they don’t get tired I’m not sure what we would be getting (he does catch better though)…

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Mar 9, 2010 2:17 PM CST up reply actions

LT is not a fit for a third down back.

He’s great on the goal line. So is AP. He’s great running with power. So is AP. He catches the ball. So does AP. LT just happens to be learning that phase.

Chester gave the defense a different look, feel, and dimension to the running game. That’s what we need. A speedy pass catching RB that can change things up when needed. We should draft one and have him here for awhile.

I think you will see one of the two RBs this year.

The Vikes don’t keep RBs on the bench that can’t cut it. Every year there are very talented RBs cut from different teams. Talented but not good enough. These two guys are on the squad for their talent and ability. I expect one of them to be the third down back and a drafted RB to back them up while learning to be a pro.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

LT and the Vikings are scheduled to meet at Winter Park...

Jim Trotter of SI.com:

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson will visit with the Vikings on Thursday, a league source said.

Minnesota is seeking to replace Chester Taylor, an eight-year veteran who signed a free-agent deal with the Bears on Friday. The Vikings have Pro Bowl starting running back Adrian Peterson, but are looking for a capable complement, particularly in passing situations.

Tomlinson, who was released last month after nine years with San Diego — where he set or tied 28 franchise records, including career rushing yards and touchdowns — has had at least 50 receptions eight times. He also is a sure-handed ball-carrier, which is attractive to the Vikings because Peterson lost six fumbles in 314 carries last season. Tomlinson has lost only seven fumbles in his last 2,541 carries.

This will be the first visit for Tomlinson since being cut by San Diego. He recently said he has no problem sharing the backfield and believes he could be a positive mentor for a young back.

If they sign LT, he’d add to their cache of media darlings/media pariahs, with Favre and Peterson already in hand. I think they should just get it over with and draft Tim Tebow, and ESPN could build a semi-permanent shanty town in Eden Prairie. :)
