Minnesota Vikings Sign Kickoff Specialist Rhys Lloyd

Ladies and gentlemen, call the good lord above and tell him to stop the sky from falling. . .the Minnesota Vikings have made a move in free agency.  Hallelujah!

Yes, the Beloved Purple have signed kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd, who spent the last three seasons with the Carolina Panthers.  This is a sort of homecoming for Lloyd, who spent 2003 and 2004 handling both the kicking and the punting chores for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and prior to that was named an All-American at Rochester Community and Technical College.

A native of Dover, England, Lloyd was signed as an undrafted free agent by both the Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers, but was released by both teams before ever kicking in any games for them.  He then played two years with the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe before landing with the Baltimore Ravens in 2007.  After being released by the Ravens, he signed with the Panthers, and served as their kickoff specialist through the 2009 season.

Lloyd led the NFL in touchbacks in 2008 with 30 on the season.  One could only assume he'd be able to at least match that number while spending half of his games kicking in the weather-free conditions of the Metrodome.

An excellent little move. Longwell can kick field goals in his sleep but was coming up short on kickoffs. We should see a lot more opponent drives starting at the 20.

I totally agree

Plus Longwell is killing me in Madden. He can barely kick it into the endzone if you hit it perfect.

glad to see they decided to do SOMETHING in free agency.

i’d like to see them sign ryan clark, so our safety play isn’t a black hole of suckiness.

thank ya jesus

not to religious, but it is nice to see the Vikes of the bench, even if it is for a kicker. Also now showing intrest in a LT, no just get a DB and we are going to be set for the drat(Selecting BPA over team needs)

Good Move

Know this guy from Galaxy days….My beloved (shiff sniff) Galaxy exist no more, but they drew more fans for games than Frankfurt Eintracht ever did or will (and my cousin was a cheerleader – so also some gooooood partying!!!)….He will add value to the ST no doubt!

Yeppers...

I live near Frankfurt, and American Football games were always sold out…The soccer team cannot do this for every game – maybe when Bayern Munchen plays there – otherwise stadium always has empty seats…Soccer is lifeblood there like NFL for us….

Shows you how popular a game we follow though – Frankfurt also did pretty well in the league several years – not sure how many times they won it all (I do a lot of traveling so unfortunately do not get to see that many games)…

The hockey team in Frankfurt IS sold out every home game (these are a blast too) and I enjoy them when I can – what can I say – I am a sports junkie when it comes to my teams!!!! Over here we have Formula 1 (car) in Abu Dhabi, which is also a blast (I like Germany better though cause beer and street parties….

i went to italy a couple years ago

and i saw Juventus play AS Roma in turin, and that place was so loud and crazy, it was just surreal. One day, i hope, people in the US will feel that same intensity for Football.

Yes EU Soccer is great...

The best example (there are many) was the World Cup staged in Germany 4 years ago in June – It was something I will never forget….

The weather was warm and sunny throughout the tournement, and it was a prolonged party – there were people from all over the world attending, and a mix as the stages progressed….and beer….jeez louise, the beer!

It was like a Super Bowl on steroids (not Starcaps or whatever the Williams’ took) at least what I can remember lol…Indeed soccer is a great sport, just have to learn to have patience and you will love the moments of greatness it provides…

Bayern Muenchen (soccer) fan here, and all the friends in Frankfurt hate that part of me lol…what to do? I was stationed there for over 8 years (Bayern) and have the “curl arm” to prove it! Ahhhhhh…speaking of curls (again) – Life is grand, is it Sunday yet (Vikings are still number one on my list of teams, always will be)…

Ya know, I never even thought about the need for a kickoff specialist until now, but this was a great move. Longwell indeed did have some issue with his distance. And though our kickoff coverage was just fine last year, now it could even go as far as being called a strength.

kickoff coverage was just fine

Until overtime in the NFC championship.

And in the second Bears game.

Not only can he help boot it on kick offs, but Im pretty sure he used the rugby punt style while with the Gophers. Could be of some use in short-yardage-punt situations. Though, Kluwe has been a pretty solid punter over the years.

SO in terms of the messed up free agent stuff this year

we can still sign someone else this year since we lost two FA correct?

by supertrooper15 on Mar 9, 2010 11:06 AM CST reply actions

The Vikes can still sign 2 Unrestricted Free Agents

Lloyd does not count against the UFA free agent total since he was a RFA. Good news and a good signing. If he does well too, he’ll be inline to take over for an aging Longwell who’ll be up for a new contract. He will be a lot cheaper too, but kickers are a dime a dozen anyway, right MilCardFan?

It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a Viking to raze a village.

Remeber him with the Gophers

He can smash that thing on kickoffs. He was one of the better kickers Gophs had in years. Mabe with Longwell aging he can pick up some tips. I remeber when Lloyd kicked a game winning field goal against Wisc. He went nuts and ran to get the Ax. Not even being American born he sure knew what it meant to get that AX. I like the move.
As for LT. I think it is worth visiting about. Lots of guys come back and do welll when they get a change of scenery. Lt’s confidence was shot. Much like when Roger Craig came and LeRoy Hoard. they were considered done bu thad some ammo left to help the team.
Maybe this is what LT needs. WOW! Could you imagine him on short yardage passes?
Even if he get 800 yds rushing and 40-50 receptions. Might be worth trying.

by CitrusFLViking on Mar 9, 2010 1:36 PM CST reply actions

I'm thinking

Imagine if AD gets 1,500, LT gets 800, and Young, Johnson, and Harvin all get 300 apiece.

by medicineball on Mar 9, 2010 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

Who will we lose from the roster with a kicking specialist on the team.

Since the rosters are limited we will have to lose someone to take on the services of a kicking specialist. I believe we need depth on our kick-offs and this is a good signing. I realize that we always carry a couple of special team players on the roster but every body really counts. I’m thinking that every new guy that is drafted will have to play ST and do double duty in order to make this roster.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

They could cut a TE

Last year they kept 4-TE’s.
Shank, Kleinsasser, Dugan and Mills. They could do w/out Mills…IMO

by chaosg on Mar 9, 2010 5:19 PM CST up reply actions

They could cut a safety

The Vikings had 6 safetys on the roster, can anyone name all 6 without looking them up on google?

by heavysett on Mar 10, 2010 4:24 AM CST up reply actions

Like this move a lot.

Longwell is still one of the best field goal kickers in the NFL hands down, but his kickoffs weren’t anything to write home about. We could have used this signing back in ‘08 when our kick coverage was atrocious, but it still doesn’t hurt to have a guy that makes sure our opponents start at the 20 a lot more often.

Cool to have a Gopher and a soccer player on the Vikes too :)

by Eric J. Thompson on Mar 9, 2010 2:42 PM CST reply actions

We could have used a kick specialist for this last Bears game too. We would have had HFA throughout the PO’s if we hadn’t lost that one.
I’m very happy with this FA signing. :)

by chaosg on Mar 9, 2010 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

Just read that LT will be visiting the Vikes this week...

he could be a good addition to the backfield, especially with AP’s fumblitis.

Love the IDEA...

I’m just not sure about the numbers. Obviously the guy can do the job or the Vikings wouldn’t have signed him.

But according to NFL.com, Lloyd is only averaging a few yards more than Longwell on his kickoffs. I don’t understand how 2 or 3 more yards results in so many touchbacks…

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!

Sometimes those 2-3 yards make all the difference

I remember a lot of Longwell kicks that were right at the goal line or a couple yards in the end zone, which almost every returner will take out. But if those goal line/two yards in kicks turn into 3-5 yards deep kicks, that will make all the difference. Either way, Rhys seems to be more consistent.

Longwell did a good job in kickoffs

Give Longwell credit. He did a good job kicking off.

But hopefully Lloyd can do a great job kicking off.
