So far

I think we are the only ones with a real glaring need for a QB for the most part

Clausen

Over-rated because of the school he played for, fumble-itis, not living up to hype coming out of HS, never won a big game in South Bend.

Plus, he’s a douchebag.

Cause they seem to like Rosenfels and TJack and Favre is coming back. Where does Claussen fit?

by PurpleJesus on Apr 22, 2010 8:55 PM CDT reply actions

I Don't Like Clausen

But, his job would/will be holding the clipboard for a year while Sage and T-Jack compete for # 2 behind Favre (assuming he comes back).

Then Clausen competes with T-Jack (Sage most likely gone) his second year for the starting job, with Clausen having the inside track.

by PurpleCrush on Apr 22, 2010 9:20 PM CDT reply actions

LT

He is projected as an LT in the NFL. He probably needs to build up his body for a year, but after that he is a starter. This year he would be an able backup for McKinnie and Loadholt. Of course, we currently have Cook, altough he is more of a utility man. I’m in favor of getting an OT this draft (unless we have a very solid backup LT already on the team). Jason Fox might be available later, but Charles Brown could threaten McKinnie for the starter. Would he really be an upgrade over McKinnie though?

cornerbacks available

Patrick Robinson, Brandon Ghee, Chris Cook, Kyle Wilson. I remember that Corey Chavous’s DraftNasty.com mocked Amari Spievey in the first round once, although that is probably early.

If we take a cornerback or safety now, it helps the rest of the draft a lot because the primary positions of need are addressed.

Taylor Mays and Nate Allen are great safety prospects right here.

no

There’s not a big difference of money between #30 and #34. It’s just that the Vikings didn’t have the four guys they were targeting available, and the guys left on their board can be had later, so just trade down and pick up value.

The thing is

Typical soft Minnesota mentality

The Vikings showed no guts early in the first round to move up and get an impact player… so let’s excuse their passiveness by complimenting them for being deliberate later in the night. Hmm, the fans condone this behavior. No wonder they can’t get to the next level.

Losers

Leave it to the Vikings to DECLINE picking in the first round so they might get a slightly better 4th round pick and a 7th rounder. Teams like the 49ers, Broncos, and Chargers made dramatic moves in the 1st round to go get the guys they felt would move them forward. The Vikings decide to step behind the teams that went to the Super Bowl so they could draft 4th rounder a little earlier. Sweet.

There is nothing good about this trade. The vikings should have been trading up like their competition if their strategy was “win now”. If they thought they could win the SB next January, then stand pat. They needed OL & DB help. Instead they wave the white flag on the 2010 season. Losers.

Belarus is 100% right

When you are trying to win now you take QUALITY over quantity. Very unlikely a 3rd or 4th rounder plays much at all for us the next 1-2 years. We should have traded UP to snatch Pouncey or a CB, who would start DAY 1. Look at us this offseason; we have added NOTHING of value. You cannot rest on your laurels.

To trade down with a division rival (who just got the best talent in the draft Suh) you’d better get at least a 3rd round pick, not a useless 4th round swap. Terrible.

We needed OL help big time (Herrera is terrible and AD suffered for it) and yet we don’t make any moves to go and get a starting caliber OG. Look at the 49ers – added two (2!) stud linemen. We did nothing.

The Lions picked twice in the first round and the Packers once… how are the Vikings keeping up with their division sliding down the draft board?

By getting more talented young blood for our team

We trade up we have that pick and then don"t pick for a while, we traded down now we have the #34, 62, 93, & 100 picks tomorrow with with plenty of talent left to solidify our team now and the future.

by nmvikesfan on Apr 22, 2010 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Cmon now

#s 34, 62, 93, and 100 don’t = the talent of # 10 or 15. Especially if the idea is the tem needs to win now.

by Belarus on Apr 22, 2010 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

So you think 1 player is better than three?

This draft is loaded with players that can help us now and in the future, why win just one Super Bowl? There’s Washington and Saffold, still there who can help now be part of our future.

Name them

Of the players left on the board, who will help us go to the SB more than Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati or Maurkice Pouncey would have? There aren’t any.

by Belarus on Apr 22, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Saffold, Kindle, and Mays are still available. I would prefer Pouncey to any of them but it would have cost approximately a 2nd and 4th to get him which I think is too much.

by CanadianViking on Apr 22, 2010 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Loadholt started for us last year

and we got him in the second. There are some guards and tackles who could beat out Hererra. Ducasse and Asamoah will be available and there are still some good corners available.

Who would you rather have?

Loadholt or Harvin? Exactly. 2nd round picks are a dime a dozen. First round picks have a chance to make a distinct difference.

So you think San Diego's

trade was smart? We only moved down four spots and can auction off the second pick tomorrow for a bounty if we want. We made a smart move that is similar to how the Patriots operate. Now we can move around and up in other rounds to target specific players.

by CanadianViking on Apr 22, 2010 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

San Diego's move was bold

It was indicative of a team that wants to move forward/win now. I didn’t agree with the pick they made, but that’s not the point. They actually did something other than passively watch the 1st round.

The Vikings may get a lot of good players tomorrow, but they didn’t get any of the great players tonight. It’s hard to be patient when the local team waved everyone else ahead of them in the first round.

Are you kidding me?

Are you really going to ask me that question… The Vikings had already drafted AD #7 in the first round, then traded down three spots in the 2nd round from pick #41 to #44 to get Rice. What relationship in God’s name does that have to what happened tonight? Come back to me when you get serious.

by Belarus on Apr 22, 2010 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Serious

You think because we moved down 4 spots that our season is over, because we didn’t move up and morgage our future. I guess you really don’t know our team needs and care about it’s future. Thank God you’re not running this team.

by nmvikesfan on Apr 22, 2010 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the Vikings posture is that of a loser

I am not nearly as upset that the Vikings traded down 4 choices as I am that the Vikings didn’t trade up. You have no idea about what you are talking about if you think # 34 in the draft = #12… The Chargers traded to that position for a song. Forget who they picked. That’s where the Vikings could have picked if they had the cajones to make a trdae that mattered.

The Vikings showed no guts early in the first round to move up and get an impact player. Unlike you, I am not willing to excuse their passiveness by complimenting them for being deliberate later in the night.

by Belarus on Apr 22, 2010 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

are you high?

I’ll admit that the 4th round is a crapshoot but there are impact players in the 4th round. Early 4th round is better than late 4th round & we can still have anyone on board save one, 1st thing tommorow.

by iowaron on Apr 23, 2010 12:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Dang, I think they got scooped on Kyle Wilson and subsequently Patrick Robinson. An honest-to-pete cover corner would’ve been tres sweet…

I now think they don’t want Clausen. If you think you have your QBOTF on the board and you’re on the clock, you don’t move back.

I think they were blindsided by Robinson going. Dang, Kyle Wilson at 29… Good luck throwing against the Jets.

No idea where they’ll go at this point.

by jianfu on Apr 22, 2010 10:27 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

They don’t want Clausen. If they wanted to win now, the Vikings would have moved up by trading some of the plethora of draft picks they have. Right now, I do not see a player out there that can catapault them to the SB. The Vikings have essentially started the rebuilding of the team. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them trade some of this year’s picks for future years draft picks.

by Belarus on Apr 22, 2010 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Why didn't we trade up to get Wilson?!?

All we needed to do was trade a 3rd or a 4th+5th and we could have moved UP to take Kyle Wilson. Or give a 3rd and 4th to move up to get Pouncey. Instead we miss out on the impact players.

Honestly, for those of you who like the Vikings’ totally passive Round 1, who can we now get that will start and help us win the SB in the next 1-2 years?

ARE WE REBUILDING? It sure seems like it by our weak-assed performance (or lacktherof) today.

I agree

I would’ve moved up a little to get Wilson. Or short of that just taken Robinson. I think they underestimated how hot CBs are; not every team avoids picking them early since 1994, as the Vikings have. It’s a critical position. Oh well.

I think the wisdom of the crowds has spoken on Clausen. Brohm took a tumble too for a reason. I don’t think they take him.

No clue. Daryl Washington? Rodger Saffold?

I actually think they may trade back again.

It might take me a while to get over losing out on Wilson, though. Loved him.

by jianfu on Apr 22, 2010 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Wilson was within reach

Ryan knows defense. The Vikings missed out on this one.

by Belarus on Apr 22, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Bull.

Miami traded the No. 12 overall pick, a fourth-round pick (No. 110) and a sixth-round pick (173) to San Diego in exchange for the 28th overall pick, a second-round pick (No. 40), a fourth-round pick (No. 126) and linebacker Tim Dobbins.

The Vikings had a ton of picks and more than a few margin players to use as trade bait.

by Belarus on Apr 22, 2010 11:13 PM CDT reply actions

I like there moves tonight

I thought they did a good job tonight. I wish they would have moved up a tad and tryed to get the CB that they needed, but with their pickup of Lito Shephard that was not a huge NEED for now, CB’s come along every draft and there is always diamonds in the rough for that position. To Belarus, you need to relize that the Vikes NEEDS for this year are not much. They need a #2 RB, there are still plenty left that will be there with there other 2nd round pick. They could use some depth at DL and OL, but nobody besides top 15 picks would have moved any of our starters out. The secondary could still get addressed with Mayes, but once again, I don’t see Mayes being a starter next year. My oppinion is that we shoudl draft Clausen if he is still there, and if not then draft Kindle to shore up our LB’s since EJ Henderson can’t seem to stay healthy for a whole year. The fact is that we don’t have any true NEEDS on our team and when you don’t have players that can make a huge difference this year then you need to look for down the road. Clausen is a much better option for QB of the future then Tjack or Sage. Sure, would have been great to moved up and grabbed a stud, but why would you do that when you don’t need to?

by Ron H on Apr 23, 2010 12:00 AM CDT reply actions

Here is your fallacy:

“Sure, would have been great to moved up and grabbed a stud, but why would you do that when you don’t need to?”

You can NEVER say ‘we don’t need to’ because you can always get better. You can NEVER say ‘we don’t need to’ unless you are sure you have all the talent you need to win the SB next year which is what our team is built to try to do. That kind of passive viewpoint (which sadly the Vikings braintrust seems to share) doesn’t win it all.

“The fact is that we don’t have any true NEEDS on our team.” ARE YOU KIDDING?!? Did you see how poorly our O-Line run blocked last year? We have the best running back in the NFL, AD, and he only averaged 4.4 yards per carry. He was constantly hit behind the line and there were very few holes for him to burst through. Herrera is TERRIBLE, Sullivan has no power, McKinnie is overrated (and a bum) and Hutch is getting old (sorry, but true).

We should have traded up to get Pouncey – based on the Eagles trade from 24 to 13 (11 spots) for two 3rds, we could have likely moved up the 13-14 spots needed for a 2nd and a 4th – and gotten a STUD O-lineman who could start at C or G on Day 1. Or short of that, traded up 2-5 spots – only needed to give up say a 3rd or a 4th and 5th – to get a guy like Kyle Wilson, who again could possibly start Day 1 (esp. with Griffin’s ACL injury).

But instead we do nothing, let a division rival get the 2nd best RB in the draft, and now have a hoard of picks, which will be used on practice squad guys or, at best, backups, while we try to win the SB without getting any better (and perhaps worse after losing Chester) than last year.

by Ace991 on Apr 23, 2010 1:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Belarus is right

The roster is set pretty much.

Any new guys, let alone 9 new guys, will have a tough time making the roster.

We have 2 seconds and a late third and a late fourth. Those will be the only picks that may actually help this year.

The Vikings could have traded up with New England at #22 and taken Bryan Bulaga to replace McKinnie with in a year and to back up the LT and LG spots this next year.

They could have traded up to #25 with the Ravens for less and taken Kyle Wilson who many felt was the top CB this year even if he is not a great tackler yet.

They could have taken Dez Bryant or Demaryius Thomas and gotten rid of Berrian.

First round picks have a higher success rate than other rounds. Fourth round picks and later have a much lower success rate.

Getting one quality player on a win now team seems like a reasonable expectation.

Especially if you want fans to get behind you and help build you a stadium.

Spielman has his reputation on the line and if he passes on Clausen it may be his demise.

I just want anyone to come here and say there is a better QB in the rest of this draft than Clausen and how Clausen would not be a great fit for the Vikings.

If we can move up and pick TJack in the second then we sure as hell can take Clausen in the second!

by MarkSP18 on Apr 23, 2010 1:03 AM CDT reply actions

+4028

There were so many quality players right within our grasp if we had just been aggressive and traded up. As you said, Bulaga, Dez Bryant, Kyle Wilson, or (as Belarus and I suggested) even more aggressively, Pouncey or Iupati.

At this point (which is a sh*tty position thanks to said No Balls moves), even though we are trying to win a SB now and from what I’ve seen, I don’t like the guy as a person at all, the best value pick by far is Jimmy Clausen. But I think the fear of pissing off Favre (he was pissed when the Packers took Aaron Rodgers 4 years ago) will prevent the Vikes from doing what they should and taking Clausen. And logically, if the Vikes had any intention of taking him, they would have just done it at #30; you don’t play cute if you think a guy can / should be your QB of the future prospect. So don’t expect the Vikings to draft him tomorrow.

Man, I wish the Vikings were aggressive as hell like the Jets; in 1 year exactly, they have:
- Traded up for Sanchez (who all agree now is a stud)
- Traded for Braylon Edwards (inconsistent but an elite talent)
- Traded for Cromarite (headcase but big time cover corner)
- Tradeded a 5th (!) for Santonio Holmes (SB MVP)
- AND STILL had a 1st round pick to take a top corner, Kyle Wilson

That is aggressive and WIN NOW mentality. The Vikings lack it and will probably pay for it.

by Ace991 on Apr 23, 2010 1:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Well it certainly is frustrating

I mean we are taking the Jets discarded CBs and saying we are OK and they are going out and getting AC and Wilson!

What is wrong with that picture?

There is a reason we are always in the bottom half of the league in pass defense and it should be clear to everyone now.

They get the top CB or #2 in the entire draft and Cromartie and we get a guy who was BENCHED on their team last year.

As many here have said before, we could move griffen or Winfield to safety and let Allen, Sapp, & Lito battle it out.

by MarkSP18 on Apr 23, 2010 1:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I can't believe how some are so pissed..

The only reason anyone should be mad is that they waited 3 1/2 hours to find out we traded down…

**We moved back 4 spots to basically grab someone we likely could have grabbed in the 1st round.

**We also get an additional 7th round pick (great for depth)

**We also get a switch of a 4th round (Moving up of 28 spots) [Remember, the draft is deep supposably]

**We also have a whole night to re evaluate how we want to go about who we pick. We have more than 10 minutes to take the #2 pick… Unless people trade up and take a player we may want, we should already have our eyes on two players…

We’re adding depth, we are still hopefully getting great players, and we’re giving ourselves flexibility.

22 starters retruning, meaning, we have room to breath. I doubt that one 1st round player would of made a difference.

If we had moved up to grab a QB, I wonder how many would of been mad… I still think opinions would of been split.
