2010 NFL Draft: Rounds Four Through Seven Open Discussion

The Vikings are set to pick second in the fourth round thanks to their Thursday night trade with Detroit.  There is still a ton of talent available to them at this point in time, what with this being such an incredibly deep draft.

We're about 45 minutes away from the last of this year's draft festivities kicking off from Radio City Music Hall, and hopefully there will be a bunch of folks here to talk about it.  Enjoy, folks!

Vikings ought to:

1. Focus the #100 pick on INTERIOR LINE – get the best available OG o r C they can get! Vital need, in my opinion. If they are sold on Campbell, they should be ecstatic to find him still there. If not and there is someone they feel is a star in the making, grab him and be grateful.

2. Look to trade with Washington. I still feel the smart move today, is to see if we can swap picks and get the Skins to “throw in” Jason Campbell in a deal. They are eager to send him packing, and I think he would be a much smarter bet than reaching for a project at QB in the late rounds. What if he could be rejuvenated by the Viking coaches, and become a strong starter for us next year? And with all his experience, he would be much more ready to keep the team competitive. And he will come cheap. I like Lefevour too, but he is at least 2-3 years away.

3. Stay with BPA for the rest of the draft.

4. Try to be active in trades – looking for some veterans to plug a few holes. IF there is a chance to get another couple of veterans, I feel the brass should be aggressive in doing so now, gearing up for another ideal chance at a run for the ring!

Agree on the O-line.

Jason Fox, Bruce Campbell, Mitch Petrus, and Matthew Tennant are all available. If we don’t go O-line I hope we get Faneca cause we need some depth/improvement on the line.

Don’t be surprised if we trade back with New England. They’ve got a ton of picks and apparently want Everson Griffin.

A project in the same sense Ray Edwards was when he came out. All the physical tools, but immaturity and motor issue kept him down. THis could turn into a great pick in 3 years.

Round 6, Pick 30 (199) — —

NFL Network

I was watching it when they announced the Griffen selection. Right after that Jason La Canfora came on and started talking about how Pete Carroll passed on Griffen multiple times, and the reason why he was slipping was because of off-the-field concerns. Mayock then hoarsely pointed out that Griffen was USC’s best pass rusher, but he didn’t play every down and didn’t see the field much, alluding to the notion that Griffen clashed with the coaches. The words “head case” are mine but it fits in with what they are saying.

If Griffen wants to play for a contender, here is his chance. He needs to get his head in the game. He probably just needs to be paired with somebody like Kevin Williams. Just do whatever KWill does on and off the field and Griffen could be a terrific, terrific NFL player.

by medicineball on Apr 24, 2010 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

by CanadianViking on Apr 24, 2010 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I think they will have Griffin backing up Edwards with Robison backing up Allen and Montgomery will be a situational player. Edwards gets traded/leaves Griffin/Robison rotate/compete for the open spot. A good value pick.

I’ve watched first hand what he can do, and how smart the man is. Amazingly smart.

Offensive line is a major need

We averaged 4.1 YPA per rush last year.

We draft a damn good power RB (perhaps FB) but do not have the line to block anymore.

Very strange draft to say the least.

The players are not that bad but they really should have looked at the lines first IMO.

I was wanting to get MORE picks in the first 3 rounds not LESS.

Late round guys have a much harder time making the team.

over quantity but doing it at the wrong end of the draft. Hope we get Faneca.

by CanadianViking on Apr 24, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah its hard to put together.

Here is how I figure it.
They hated all the QBs that were available.
They see Gerhart as a key piece to the puzzell.
They like our line and figure that injuries were the problem not the talent.
Gerhart is a runner behind a zone blocking scheme.
We are not changing the scheme or line talent.

Only way it makes sense.

Both our guards were hurt all year

and we had two new starters so perhaps we will improve without change. Hoping anyway.

by CanadianViking on Apr 24, 2010 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

There are no excuses

It is not the starters it is the backups.

We passed on Rodger Saffold who would have been an excellent backup and eventual successor to McKinnie.

One injury is all it takes and we are in deep doo doo.

DE, I thought was looking pretty good even with the unsettled situation with Ray.

Amazing.

I think that the front office is getting too full of themselves.

Passing on Clausen was pure stupidity. You do not pass on the #2 QB in the whole draft and #1 in some circles to draft the 6th best CB.

by MarkSP18 on Apr 24, 2010 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Well you know I agree but you don't draft a QB

that you don’t evaluate as a Franchise QB early.

They really see Gerhart as the opportunity to move this team forward.

relieved

I am relieved we didn’t draft Jimmy Clausen. From what I have heard, his father has been pushing his son to play football. Clausen looks like he is headed for a mental breakdown or something. His overly cocky exterior must hide an inferiority complex. I wish Clausen well, but I think we can do a lot better at the QB position.

At CB, Cook will do well. I don’t care where he was rated, he was the guy for us after Jackson and McCourty went off the board.

by medicineball on Apr 24, 2010 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

MM you are nothing bu positive

I like that and hope you do not change.

But you are wrong on Clausen & Cook.

Cook is decent no doubt.

But there were better players available. And we signed Lito so he was an absolute need.

We needed to get the QB or at least Rodger Saffold.

And you know this.

Don’t be a sheep!

by MarkSP18 on Apr 24, 2010 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

According to Spielman

4 players were equally rated. I assume they were Cook, Robinson, Price, Saffold.
everyone thought the need was for a CB.
I don’t get the problem with the Cook pick?

Don't dislike Cook,

I just wish we grabbed OL earlier as I think there were comparable CB talents to Cook later. Seemed like the corner class was deep this year.

by CanadianViking on Apr 24, 2010 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Cook is a post season riser

He was not on the radar prior to the post season then all of a sudden he is all that?

Frazier drafted him because he reminded him of himself as Chilly said.

Frazier is a former DB who is now the DC for us and his specialty unit is failing miserably under his watch.

19th in the league against the pass is not any good.

It must be why he cannot get a HC job.

If you cannot even get the unit you specialize in to play well, what does that say?

Cook would have been OK at #62 but with the Lito signing I did not believe that CB was a first round necessity especially with Hicks gone and a backup for McKinnie needed.

Top all of that off with the fact that the #2 QB was there and it is just plain dumb!

by MarkSP18 on Apr 24, 2010 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Again it is purely evaluation. The Vikes loved Cook.

two weeks ago you thought we should take Brandon Ghee as our 1st because a CB was so important. Spielman agreed with you. His BPA was a CB and he took him with his first pick.

Two weeks ago I refused to believe that Clausen would be there

Cook is nice no doubt but we could have Clausen, John Jerry, & Ghee in the first 3 rounds.

We got Cook, Gerhart, & Griffen (another DE for what).

by MarkSP18 on Apr 24, 2010 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you that would have been nice

But if the evaluators are correct and Clausen is a bust I can’t argue with Cook, Gerhart, and Griffen.

Joe Kapp

by lifelongvike on Apr 24, 2010 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions

the problem and how the Vikings dealt with it

The problem is we absolutely needed to draft a cornerback by the end of the second round. No matter how you look at things, the need for a CB was too great. The cornerbacks available at #62 included Amari Spievey and others, but Chris Cook was a lock to go in the middle part of the second round due to his physical attributes.

If we had traded up into pick #25, for example, we could have taken McCourty, but that would have been very costly.

Doing it this way hurt a lot because we passed on Saffold, Decker, and other players, but we not only got a solid cornerback, we also take a potentially big offensive contributor in Toby Gerhart.

I was hoping we would draft McCourty, but he wasn’t there, and moving up would have been costly.

by medicineball on Apr 24, 2010 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

We called NE about McCourty but they wouldn't budge.

If two weeks ago I had told you the Vikes obtained
Everson Griffen #30
Toby Gerhart #62
Chris Cook #64

They couldn’t pass up a late first-high 2nd talent in Griffen as a late 3rd rounder. BPA ain’t all bad.

Agonizing draft for this Vikings fan!

I am NOT thrilled so far. We paid too much to get Gerhart. We need OL stud. We need Interior DL help. We need a QB of the future. I will do cartwheels if a trade or two is announced soon (i.e. go get Jason Campbell, trade Ray Edwards, etc.) There are some needs we should address, and I am really wondering WHEN the brass will finally make the moves this team really needs. I like Gerhart but we could have won the same games with a different RB and not traded the picks like we did, at a crucial phase of this draft.

I’m trying to cling to hope, but worried…

Vikings really disappointing this Draft.

Sorry, but they are making some dubious picks and not being as aggressive with trades as I thought they ought to be. They had the collateral to trade, but spent too much to go after Gerhard. Now, we still have holes to fill and a lot of the talent is off the board. Raiders just made their smartest personnel move in years, getting Campbell for very little. I’m not happy.

by misterdizz on Apr 24, 2010 12:07 PM CDT reply actions

What? If they hadn't traded they would only have one more pick so far.

And they would never had had an opportunity to put Gerhart in our offense. Whats the problem?

Joe Kapp

by lifelongvike on Apr 24, 2010 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

the "problem"?

Gerhard was not “essential” in my opinion. Other ways to get an effective RB to replace Taylor. I feel getting a value-added QB in his prime (Campbell) is a rare opportunity and that was just sitting there for the Vikings to get. I think we just have a difference of opiniion on philosophies. But, that’s how I would have played it; and used those two earlier picks to fill more pressijng needs (OL, interior DL; etc.)

by misterdizz on Apr 24, 2010 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Not "essential" but absolutely an Elite RB in this draft.

We had no chance at his talent in the 2nd without a trade or a reach.

DeGeare
Strengths
DeGeare is a huge guard with more than adequate height. Has a quick first step and engages fast. Strong run blocker who generates a good push and drives his man off the ball. Maintains a wide base and is stout against the bull rush.
Weaknesses
Does not have the endurance to give a consistent effort and carries too much bad weight. Fails to recognize stunts and blitzes and is generally late identifying his assignment. Shows inconsistent technique and does not use his hands well to get inside the defender’s pads.

by PurpleJesus on Apr 24, 2010 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Vikings certainly don't come off as having one of the top 12 drafts this year

Anyone really want to dispute that?

Look at how aggressive and creative teams like the JETS and SEAHAWKS have been. I do realize we have a solid foundation, but to reach the Super Bowl, there is still a lot of work to be done. I just was hoping for more creative stuff with trades and better early round picks. Not overly excited by the #1 pick, and I felt Gerhard is a nice player, but not the highest priority. I wanted trades and maneuvering to put us in better positions. These last two picks are very ho-hum – players that are not nearly ready to contribute much. Maybe post-draft trades will happen???? I hope so.

by misterdizz on Apr 24, 2010 12:40 PM CDT reply actions

two things

One, the trade up trade down thing was a mess, except we got both Chris Cook and Gerhart, so maybe it was worth it.

Second, we are drafting role players this year, not front-line starters.

Like I said after the NFCCG, our starters are really good to elite for the most part, but this team has lacked depth.

no.

Any QB taken now is a reach and a 3-4 year project. We missed the boat and should have traded for Jason Campbell. Now, it would be a stupid move to try to make an NFL starter of any of the remaining QBs. But I won’t be shocked if they reach, the way this draft has been going. :(

But I feel we did fine. But we really won’t know until this fall… or later.

Exactly why my blood pressure is boiling!!!

IDIOTIC…. Jason Campbell will blossom in Oakland. He would have been a perfect successor to Favre. And we could have stolen him cheap! Tell me why not. This week has been a very troubling one for this long-time fan. I am clinging to faith, but NOT IMPRESSED with the front office. Trades are the only path now to righting what I see as a bunch of missed opportunities during the draft.

by misterdizz on Apr 24, 2010 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Campbell did not do great in Washington running the same offense as us. If he does well in Oakland, it will be because he fits their scheme better. His long wind up will be OK considering they want to throw deep all the time.

by medicineball on Apr 24, 2010 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

you hit it right on the head

i heard the knock on him last year was that he was asked to spread and west coast it, and that his natural tendency is as a drop back pocket passer. i think he is better suited for a different scheme.

With 3 picks I don't know why they wouldn't pick a QB

No one would bat an eye if you picked a 6 or 7 QB, gave him a tryout to see if he’s the next Tom Brady and then cut/practice squaded him if he wasn’t.

WIth as many picks as the Vikes had this year and no real glaring weak spots, we’re in a good position to grab projects or risks.

by Purpledork on Apr 24, 2010 12:46 PM CDT reply actions

Brace yourselves for the Draft Grades.

Watch how the “experts” grade this Minnesota Vikings draft in the next 24 hours or so. I anticipate the Front Office will get roasted a bit over the dubious selections, weird lack of innovative thinking, etc. I predict we will be way down toward the bottom 20% in most articles, post-draft.

I understand your frustration

But can you please loosen up on the negativity?
What was your initial reaction when the Vikings drafted Troy Williamson? Im sure like everybody else including me, you loved it.
How about Peterson? People were split. I was Pro AP
What about Rice? A guy nobody had heard of. Im confident you and most other people including me, thought Who the hell is this guy and why did we draft him?
Even My Boy Percy? A lotta people did not like that pick, and look where we’re at. ;)
Point being, is IMO we out here know nothing compared to the FO. We go by scouting reports written from OTHER guys, and what we here from McShay, Mayock, and Kiper.
The FO actually goes to see these guys live and they visit a lot of them and get a feel for them, you just have to trust in them. :)

I was bitterly disappointed because I wanted a guy called Merriman. The funny thing is, that would have really amped up the Love Boat scandal.

I was pro AD. I had never eard of Rice. I was pro Percy.

I was pro Kevin Williams.

Back in the early 80s, I wanted Marino. Joey Browner turned out to be a great player but wasn’t Marino.

On this draft, I’m giving it a high grade so far, but the next three picks are critical. We need players like Tyler Sheehan, Jay Ross, Kevin Matthews, Duke Calhoun, Blair White, and Jeromy Miles.

Really disappointed with the pick

Cannot understand how you pass up Rolle 3 times. Yeah maybe he is there with 214 but given how we have been drafting who is of the camp that we are gonna go out and pickj a name out of a hat and use them.

by FSUViking on Apr 24, 2010 2:06 PM CDT reply actions

Well it is the last 2 rounds of the draft. That’s kind of how it goes. I doubt the other teams picking are as shocked and surprised as most fans are.

You are probably right but I dont see the sense in picking a QB when we need way more help in our secondary.

shit, got fooled when the draft feed restarted. my bad

by Josh_D on Apr 24, 2010 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Webb will apparently be moved to WR

This from Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post:

At 6-feet-2, 223 pounds, Webb was hand-timed by some scouts in attendance at 4.44 in the 40-yard dash, had an astounding vertical jump of 42 inches and an 11-foot-5-inch standing broad jump. Just for reference Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson had one of the best combine workouts in recent memory for a big-framed wide receiver and his vertical was 42 at the 2007 combine to go with an 11-7 broad jump. Webb’s vertical would have been the best among the wide receivers who were at the combine (Webb was not there), and his 40 time would have put him among the fastest and his size would have made him among the biggest. So, in short, with that kind of explosiveness somebody will try to find a position for this guy to play. It’s not like he doesn’t understand the game. He threw for at least 2,200 yards and rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his two seasons as the Blazers’ starting quarterback.

a Safety. Jamarca Sanford played very well when he wasnt busy taking out our MLB knee. Tyrell Johnson also came on at the end of the season. If needed we can move Toine to Safety too, so we dont NEED a safety.

TE?

Really? TE? Another strange move.

by FSUViking on Apr 24, 2010 2:40 PM CDT reply actions

Shuler is the son of ex-NFL TE Mickey Shuler Sr. and has a good understanding of the game thanks to his bloodlines. He is a big, powerful tight end that can overpower defenders to the ball when in a crowd and shows good strength as an in line blocker. He oozes off the line and lacks explosiveness when coming out of his breaks which makes it difficult to separate from defenders. He lacks much in the way of elusiveness when running after the catch. His best chance is as a No. 2 or 3 tight end that is used primarily as a second blocker.

I know few got tweaked by the last pick, but reading up on the guy, might be a nice blocker for some running plays once he learns the ropes. Still wishing maybe a Safety or QB at this point but pickings are slim

I actually didn't know anything about Rolle...

But, from what I saw on ESPN, I would have liked to have drafted him for his character and smarts, if nothing else…

by Loki Loves Purple on Apr 24, 2010 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

maybe not

but given the fact I knew how good he was and that we had a couple chances to take him I felt it was a win-win situation.

If i didn’t know someone was in the draft then obviously I cant get upset if I don’t know they are there but I did so its sort of a redundant point, would I miss something that I didnt know was even there, well obviously probably not but I would once it had gone but Iif I knew I was able to go and get the said thing then I would be disappointed in not being able to get it.

You also got to give me some leeway in that I’m a nole and IU’ve been down on the feild next to the guys during some good and bad times anrd as a leader Rolle was awesome, being able to be around a guy like him was inspiring. I just think he would’ve given us a really good player first off but also a great leader, whenever FSU was down in a game it would be Rolle stepping up trying to get people back in the game and jacked up to win and not let our “tradition” take a hit.

Good draft overall. Great guys who will play right away from the first 3 picks and good depth at need areas. The last few guys most likely will end up on the practice squad, but everyone should have a place.

Agree with Kiper 100%

Guess we will see how this draft unfolds in a year or so, overall interesting draft but one that doesn’t match up to past drafts in my opinion.

by FSUViking on Apr 24, 2010 3:37 PM CDT reply actions

Well

The only players I can say I’m somewhat excited about are Gerhart and Griffen. I’m not disappointed but more intrigued overall. I was really hoping for an immediate starter quality pick for the secondary and I’m hoping Cook will be that guy, but I can’t say the pick instills confidence. I’ll give the Vikes staff a break though as they have done a good job in the past and seem to know what they are doing (with the exception of QBs).

by vikedawg on Apr 24, 2010 3:42 PM CDT reply actions

It's not just you, he does.

But so does every other person employed by an NFL team.

I’m fine with our draft. As important as who we took is who we didn’t take. Clearly the people paid to run our team didn’t feel like Safety and DT were a priority which can possibly indicate how they feel about Sanford/Tyrell and about possibly about Letroy Guion— or it could be that the values of the players available just weren’t there when they wanted it. I personally like the last two safeties we’ve drafted and didn’t feel it was a need going into this year’s draft but my opinion doesn’t count.

As you feel about Myron Rolle (that we may someday regret not taking a chance on him, right?) I feel about Colt McCoy and possibly Clausen (just because I didn’t feel there would be a chance for us to get him), but moreso Colt McCoy. The fact that Holmgren drafted him makes me feel a little worse. I sincerely hope that we don’t rue the day we didn’t take Colt McCoy, and now I’m rooting against a kid who seems like a genuinely good person for the sole purpose of making my team look correct in their assessment.

Loyalties can lead to very confusing feelings.
