2010 NFL Draft: Minnesota Vikings Select Alabama-Birmingham QB Joe Webb With the 199th Overall Pick
With their sixth-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, the 199th pick overall, the Vikings took a developmental quarterback by nabbing Joe Webb from the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
Here's what Mocking the Draft had to say about Webb.
Webb could be yet another Wildcat quarterback candidate. He's a good all-around athlete and makes a lot of plays with his legs. Plays in a gimmick offense. Will throw too many passes into coverage. Has played wide receiver and that may be his better position in the NFL.
Wow. . .certainly not the most encouraging scouting report you'd ever want to hear. Apparently at his Pro Day, he did work out as a wide receiver.
Myron Rolle, who darn near everybody in the comments on the main Day 3 thread is completely sold on at this point, continues to slide down the board.
Minnesota has two more selections remaining, both in the seventh round. They are #214 and #237 overall. Stay tuned. . .maybe the Vikings will draft someone we've heard of with either (or both) of those selections.

Tarvaris Jackson #2
Seems like a wasted pick. Woulda preferred Rolle, or at least Tony Pike if we were going QB
Definitely fair to call this a wasted pick.
Less than 15 minutes after he’s drafted….
Come on you guys.

Yeah, I made this call before I found out he was going to be a wr.
This is the first pick I did not like though. He probably woulda been there at 7.7 for us.
Rather see Rolle. If nothing else, Mr. neurosurgeon coulda fixed Percy’s migraines!
He will be a receiver most likely

Kind of a beast. A 42 inch vertical!

Holy hand size Batman! What an athlete. I feel better already.
McCourty will do. If the Packers don't take him first... they would.
Also
Obviously it take more than measure-ables to be a good NFL player. But he does have some experience playing WR. Definitely an unknown though.

That was impressive.
Seems like a freakish athlete. Bit of a flyer but I guess it is that time of the draft. Dude’s got some springs!

If he can catch he will out-jump anyone
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!
Is he a capable WR?
McCourty will do. If the Packers don't take him first... they would.
He's got giant hands
I’m calling Webb Spiderman from now on!

With a name like Webb, what better nickname...
(Anyone who has not seen this guy live should probably reserve any negative comments before they volunteer to become a public fool.)
Wildcat?
Maybe we’re gonna try and run it more next year? Seems like the only thing this guy could do that would fit.
Is Rolle an errogant prick or something?
McCourty will do. If the Packers don't take him first... they would.
No he just didnt go to his senior year because he was a rhodes scholar studying at oxford in england
evidently a lot of front office's think he's a problem for some other reason
They could just be insecure that he’s smarter than they are and that rocks the boat, but people are drafting a few ungraded DBs.
He's a dual bet
Developmental QB and developmental receiver all at once.
Welcome to the Vikings, Joe Webb!
I think he might play wide receiver. He’s very athletic and we have room for a wide-out.
The Webb file
I posted this before on another thread but its worth noting again here due to relevance. Here is Mr. Webb’s scouting report:
He isn’t a natural passer and struggles to read coverages. Webb lacks the ability to go through his progressions. He doesn’t display a confident throwing motion, has a tendency to short arm throws underneath and fails to keep his feet under him when asked to drive the ball downfield. He has a tendency to fall off on a lot of throws and is squeamish in the face of pressure. He fails to keep his eyes downfield when scrambling. He lacks ideal accuracy and touch on all levels of the field. He has a lazy delivery and will drop his elbow. Webb fails to generate much power from his lower half. He isn’t a strong-armed passer and lacks the touch and anticipation skills to fit the ball into tight areas. He fails to diagnose coverages, will force the ball into traffic and isn’t safe with the ball.
With late 6 round guys, you can’t ever expect much. So I’ll try to refrain from being to negative here (unlike my thoughts on some other of our picks…). But I think its a safe bet to say this guy was most likely drafted as a WR judging by his already proven ability to suck at playing QB.
Apparently he's being moved to WR
And after reading this from Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post. . .I think they might be on to something. . .
At 6-feet-2, 223 pounds, Webb was hand-timed by some scouts in attendance at 4.44 in the 40-yard dash, had an astounding vertical jump of 42 inches and an 11-foot-5-inch standing broad jump. Just for reference Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson had one of the best combine workouts in recent memory for a big-framed wide receiver and his vertical was 42 at the 2007 combine to go with an 11-7 broad jump. Webb’s vertical would have been the best among the wide receivers who were at the combine (Webb was not there), and his 40 time would have put him among the fastest and his size would have made him among the biggest. So, in short, with that kind of explosiveness somebody will try to find a position for this guy to play. It’s not like he doesn’t understand the game. He threw for at least 2,200 yards and rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his two seasons as the Blazers’ starting quarterback.

Thanks
Finally some good news. This is making me feel much better about the pick. Move him to WR, Chili. Don’t get smart and try to mold him at QB.
Most have him listed at 6'3.
If he can run routs he may be a good WR. He can do a bit of everything it seems.
McCourty will do. If the Packers don't take him first... they would.
They just don't want a safety. Its clear.
McCourty will do. If the Packers don't take him first... they would.
Clearly Chilly is content at QB
He has to be as he’s had ample opportunity to draft decent projects and hasn’t. We’ll see what happens with the last pick, but I am not sure there are any QBs left worth a pick.

JK, what do I know I cant even spell poopy right.
McCourty will do. If the Packers don't take him first... they would.
lol, I dont mean it in a bad way, Like i'm not wishing Webb fails or anything, just don't see as much upside with Webb that I did with Rolle. But I have no idea, just bitter we didn't choose him I guess lol.
Not Much Upside??
With his height and that speed and vertical leap, this guy is the very definition of upside. He’s either a complete home run or a bust as a WR. Well worth the pick to find out.

webb
looks like a good receiver project.
Some people want a safety the team already has six on the roster 4 backups that play
special teams,
Maybe they will sign a few more free agent safeties.
