That’s fine. Then he won’t have to jump through any hoops to reclaim his old number when we sign him next offseason. ;)

He'll make it. say bye-bye to Garret Mills
"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."
-from Bram Stoker's Dracula
Moss? Why?
Why would we sign a 34 year old WR when there isn ’t anywhere for his stats to go but down?
Why would we sign a 34 year old WR when we have younger, faster, more dedicated WRs on the roster already?
because then
when I’m sleeping at night, clutching my Randy Moss teddy bear and dreaming of fuax moonings of the GB crowd, I can wake up in a similar reality.
Also, I notice that you say we have younger, faster, and more dedicated guys, but you failed to mention “more talented.” Cut Berrian, sign Moss, and we still have basically the same group with a giant upgrade and a fan favorite at one of the positions.

Moss doesn’t wear 84 anymore. We should have given Shuler 81 so that when Moss comes back he has to be 84 :D
Why Diss Shianco like that?
- already is active and on the roster — Shianco!

I'm sorry, but #44 should be retired

Enough said.

that was my thought exactly.......
when I read about the hand wringing….
Why has 44 not been retired?

retiring numbers isn't what it used to be
The NFL now has a stated policy that encourages teams to not retire numbers. Teams still can retire numbers, though. The problem is that if a lot of numbers are retired, there are too few numbers and choices for numbers for current players.
If #44 is retired, then what about this guy? What about that guy? How about retiring John Randle’s number, or Randall McDaniel’s number? They’re both in the Hall of Fame. Pretty soon we’ll have a bunch of retired numbers.
The Vikings should retire a number very rarely.
Current list of Vikings’ retired numbers
10 Fran Tarkenton
53 Mick Tingelhoff
70 Jim Marshall
77 Korey Stringer
80 Cris Carter
88 Alan Page
That’s enough. The Vikings Ring of Honor is the right way to honor a great player like Chuck Foreman.
By the way, Leroy Hoard also wore #44, and he was great.
Yes, it was far easier nailing down numbers in those olden days when no tomorrow might come to this pro football thing. Nowadays, the big-business NFL has rules on what numbers you can wear by position without your saying “Mother, may I?” to a zebra before taking the field.
There are only so many numbers you can prohibit from being worn again before problems will arise for future generations. They won’t let you wear 00 anymore, let alone 911. The No Fun League rides again!
Ah well, it may be goodness that we not get hung up on the numbers. Just recall Johnny Rivers’ lament in Secret Agent Man.
Retiring no. 70
I believe that it is true that the Vikings have yet to formally retire the great Jim Marshall’s number 70. However, from the day of his retirement, the story I’ve heard is that the Vikings equipment manager has refused ever to issue it to anyone. Which I think is great. If it’s true. But if it is true, they really have to formally retire no. 70.
