Gerhart piss someone off?
Seems like every day there is a new story about someone putting a frivolous or unnecessary hit on the rook Toby Gerhart. Then the last day of camp a scuffle broke out between Toby and Ray Edwards after Edwards hit him after a play. Ray Edwards said that Gerhart is doing things you shouldn't do to your own team mates in camp. So he seems to say Toby is playing too hard for practice, or something to that effect. But other things I've read make it seem like guys are just picking on the kid. Perhaps it is just because the guy is so big he can take it. Maybe they want him to play angry. Or maybe it is, gasp, racism.

they're trying to make him tougher than he is
right now it seems like he’s too soft…..even letroy guion gave him a hit in non contact practice.
until he stands up for himself and starts bruising people back like he did at sanford he wont gain much respect from these vets.
Ray Edwards was whining that Toby chipped him
before breaking off into his route. I’m suspect Toby has taken his lumps like a man and Ray should do the same.
Well I could see the chip
If the chip was a really hard one and Ray was engaged with a blocker then that could cause an ankle or knee injury. My guess is that Ray was just looking for a reason to jump in on the Gerhart bashing fun.
Personally I think it is one of those deals where Albert Young and Gerhart are about the only two guys the defense is allowed to hit hard. So they are after him. Maybe with Gerhart’s size they feel like it is okay to bash him around.
Edwards even said that he thought Gerhart was tough and a very hard runner. So if they doubt his toughness then it is a mixed signal. Maybe Toby just seems timid or isn’t fitting in with all the other rowdy meathead jock types.
In any case, I’m really only excited about a few things come Saturday’s preseason game. I want to see if TJack looks good. I want to see Joe Webb’s athleticism. But more than all I want to see that meast Toby G running downhill in purple. I’d love to see him make it to the secondary on a swing pass and put his head down on a D back.
I think it has a lot to do with missing a little time with the contract dispute.
And I do believe he missed a some of the voluntary stuff because he wanted the “walk” at his Stanford graduation.
Anyways, I believe it’s mostly in good fun. Some seriousness to it, but it’ll be forgotten when the season starts.
I hope it doesn’t have anything to do with race… I’m very doubtful of that actually.

did not have a contract dispute, Stanford would not allow him to graduate and practice in the spring. Unless you are talking about Ray having one and unloading relieve his own stress related contract issues?

You are spot on
Ohio St. has the same rule…Ray had issues in college and still seems to have issues…as another poster said…Ray should man up and shut his trap….seems nobody else complains nearly as much as this guy…wish we could have gotten a pick for him.

Reverse Racism is still called Racism ........
They claimed he would have won the Heisman if he weren’t white ?
1. Pat Williams hits him in non-contact drills . Brags about it .
2. Ray Edwards retaliates after Toby chips him before continuing his route . Standard move . Ray brags about deliberate retaliation .
3. Not an established pattern yet . But close ? It is up to the players to end the negative vibe . Or did the closing of camp do it for them .
The only "schism" is...
between your ears, or am I thinking of some other word that begins with an “s”.
by Norse Force on Aug 13, 2010 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions
Just want to point out, Gerhart didn’t not win the Heisman cause he’s white. He didn’t win because Ingram was equally as impressive as him, and he played a major role in his team winning the national championship.
Even that is a moot point too me though, because the most outstanding player in college football was clearly Ndamukong Suh.

Others in the Media stated this . I too believe Ingram did well against top Defenses week in and week out .
The Media once again started this frenzy . Not me . It is hard enough to bring it out . Race is a touchy subject in all sports . I agree with your assumption . I am a diehard Husker fan and couldn’t agree more !!!
by gothicpurple on Aug 15, 2010 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, what doesn’t the media bring it, honestly haha? It was ashame that Suh didn’t win it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player dominate on defense the way he did in college football. Watching him rip his way through double and triple teams look it wasn’t even very difficult was almost unreal.

Anyone else notice...
That Ray Edwards is kind of a douche?
He is the only guy openly complaining about his contract, yet he doesn’t deserve a new one. He keeps opening his mouth, spouting crap like “I’m gonna break the sack record this year” after putting up only 5 sacks per year. Gets suspended for a banned substance violation, and now this.
Rookies ALWAYS try to play harder than they should. That is what rookies have to do in order to make the team. I highly doubt whatever Gerhart did was intentional.
I mean, the guy went to Stanford so he obviously has some smarts, he knows it would be really stupid to risk injuring another player by intentionally hitting a guy harder than needed. Ray, on the other hand, does not seem to understand that.
Pat just likes to hit people, and when he hits someone it is almost always hard. It’s kinda tough not to hit someone hard with his size. He would have said the same thing had he knocked AP off his rocker.
Wrong . Many have complained from team to team . DE's stand to lose more than most .
Goodell and the owners cooked all this up to straighten out bad contracts of the past . While preventing the good teams the ability of getting better with crazy one year rules .

Ray Edwards is ALWAYS bitching
Remember last year when he was bitching about Loadholt? Yeah, I don’t really give half a crap what he has to say about anybody during training camp.
laughing at 'more'...
he’s a rookie. he’s supposed to be treated like a chump until he proves his worth.
I BELIEVE...

Many of you have played ball at various levels.
Me, only high school.
But we all know how testy camp/practice gets towards the end of preseason. I don’t know about you but the hotter it got in August the nastier I got at tackle. It’s not personal so much, but you are looking for that one tiny little thing you perceive as ‘extra curricular activities’ to set you off. Then, when the season starts and you settle back to to normalcy, it is all good baby.

That makes sense to me.

almost all the highlights are TG not AY kind of funny? Probably just want to show off the new draft pick.

Well that's good to hear..
Because we moved up to get him, so I hope we are able to utilize him this year.
I think it may be that Albert Young is a camp body pushing him to become better.. So, Gerhart maybe learning a lot from him & AP while Young who has potentially improved could still be at risk of not making it 2nd in depth.
Sticks and stones
If sportsmanship were easy, what would be the value of it? Anyone who plays sports discovers people are out to cheat, take cheap shots at you, and even go Jack Tatum on you. The good thing so far about this little camp incident is that whatever feelings are involved, no one is playing the victim card out loud, but rather going the no blood, no foul route.
It’s not like the New Orleans Saints are going to say, “Hi, Mr. Gerhart. Let us get out of your way so you can score some touchdowns. Nice day today, isn’t it?”
Anyone who can’t keep their emotions in check is likely to get suckered into a potential game-changing penalty. Chilly was right when he said this is an educational opportunity. Discretion is the better part of valor. It’s better to be smart and take your licks out on some other unfortunate team in some constructive manner.
If you can’t stand blood, you can’t be a good surgeon. If you can’t take it or can’t dish it out, you can’t play in the NFL very long.
Gerhart has said he doesn’t want to be compared to just John Riggins. As long as you are playing amid various races, there are going to be de facto interracial conflicts. I’ve been in the kind that got out of hand, and it wasn’t that I felt it was just because God put us in different colored birthday suits. A fight doesn’t mean it’s all about race. It sometimes means you have conflicting goals on the field and conflicting views about what constitutes fair play.
I’d be more concerned if no one got upset in the heat at camp. The phrase “going postal” caught on for a reason.
Wow....
I JUST now realized that we’re talking about how he’s a white running back. I really truly to the depths of my heart hope that’s not the reason he’s taking a beating. Hopefully, it’s just rookie issues. I’d hate to see this kind of thing explode in, of all places, Minnesota.
no, i think he is too smart for football.
i think the defense hits him good, then toby responds by using words that the defense does not understand. this makes them mad, so they hit him again, but harder. this hurts, and makes toby
get mad. mission accomplished.
i think the defense is trying to make a point to him. that he thinks too much for the speed of the game in the nfl. so they knock him silly and get him mad. then toby runs like a crazy madman. and the defense says…“see, you have to think less and play with more emotion”.
besides, he is pink. and the madder he gets, the pinker he gets….i think that is the fun of it.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
Gerhart is
A rookie.
And a running back.
And one of the few guys that the defense can really HIT.
I’m sure Young takes his licks, but it’s less publicized because he’s not a high-profile draft pick and he’s been through this a few times before.
Toby Gerhart
Let me tell you something about this kid named Toby Gerhart. Most of you are seeing and hearing about him for the first time, but I’ve had the priviledge of watching his carreer progress since he was a sophomore in high school and followed his game every week at the college level. No, I’ve never met him and he doesn’t even know of me but I’ve talked to alot of people that knew him in high school and to a man…………they all said he was one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet. When he was in college, all his teammates praised him for his unselfishness and even though he could have been big-headed about who he is………….he was truly humble. Why am I telling you all this? If he is having any issues in camp, I can tell you with 100% certainty, it’s not on him. Rookies are going to be dissed and bashed simply becasue they’re rookies and Toby gets it………. but maybe he had enough of it and struck back.
But, it’s quite possible that it could be a race thing disguised as something rookies just go through. Time will tell but as an ahtlete myself playing basketball at a pretty high level, the fact that I could jump and outperform alot of other guys on the team pissed a few of them off. They eventually got over it but I’m telling you it goes on even today. Toby will go about his business as he always has…..very quietly as he does not have one flambuoyant bone in his body. watch him…… you’ll probably never see him dance or celebrate in the end zone like some of these other ego-maniac players do. For those of you that get the chance to watch him play up close and personal……you’re in for a real treat. He’s the kind of person that you’d love to see your sister dating. How many players in the NFL fall into that category? Just trying to explain his character for those of you.
As for the couple of skirmishes with his new teammates, it is all part of being a rookie but both of those other guys have a history of being mouthy and showboating. Standing over a player after you tackle him and taunting him is classless…..at best! As for the Ray Edwards thing, Toby only knows one way to play…..all out. In time, he may learn to ease up himself.

I want to see him score lots of TDs...
…simply flip the football to the ref and take a few headslaps from his teammates as he jogs back to the sideline.
ahhhh… I miss Robert Smith.

So do I!!!
Robert Smith was by far my favorite Viking and as a fan of them it was sad to see him be smart and not want to sit in a wheel chair!
I hope it is more like this
The D starts on him early and often, welcome to the NFL. He does well this season, shows up next camp and the D is like yea, we are the reason you did so well last year, they all laugh and life goes on.

Racially Radicalized
Until there’s at least a scrap, a shred, a scintilla (I’ll want my change back from that one) of evidence that there’s any sort of racial conflict going on, I think we’d be way of the line to suggest that’s the cause of whatever issues that Toby Gerhart is experiencing on the Vikings squad. Think about it for a minute, seriously. This not just the NFL, this is the Minnesota Vikings, and we have absolutely no reason to presume racially-motivated tensions, let alone issues and outright harassment. Even more than that, it’s downright insulting to the Vikings squad and the caliber of player they’ve proven themselves to be, to even suggest this sort of crap.
I think that we’ve been hyper-sensitive to inter-racial situations due to the nation’s politics and the way certain segments of politically active groups have a tendency to throw down the race card for any excuse at all, whether it’s justified or it. We see people and groups being accused of being racist without any basis other than that they disagreed with the accuser. Let’s not bring that crap to the DN, I think that the vast majority of us are much, much better than that.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
Really, here's a guy joining up to a championship team
with more pro bowlers than you can count on two hands. When people want to make it on that squad they have to show their worth. They can’t rest on their laurels or their draft position. They can’t chill out because they got a great scholarship or whatever. The leaders on the team are going to make sure that person realizes he isn’t as good as they are and needs to get better to make the team.
I think the defense is doing a great job with this. This will make Tony tougher and better fast or get him our of the league. Either way is good for us. If he bails we put in Reynaud or Young if he succeeds then he’s alreay been hit by some of the best run stoppers in the league. Nuff said.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Yeah, That's Nuff. Just play football.
