49ers-Vikings: A 49ers blogger talking about everything BUT Brett Favre

Hey everybody, this is Fooch from Niners Nation.

Given the insanity of decision 2010 ("I swear it's my last year!") for you guys, I thought now would be a good time for a bit of a distraction. In the past, some of the SB Nation football blogs have put up FanPosts on each other's sites in order to get questions answered about the opposition. While general smack talk is always fun, this FanPost is more meant to help you guys get a better idea of what to expect from the 49ers on Sunday. I'll give you a few quick comments and then I'll open the floor for questions and comments. Also, seeing as I'm not the be all, end all on 49ers knowledge (in spite of what I tell myself on a daily basis) I'm going to post a link to this over at Niners Nation so we can get some other insight on your questions.

The 49ers haven't quite had the Favre drama with which you've dealt, but they have a big of their own drama. Defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer, a recent first round pick, got pissy about his playing time and basically forced a trade. The team dealt him to Seattle and has moved on. The team also saw backup running back Glen Coffee retire at the age of 23 because he decided he wanted to focus all his energy on God. The Coffee departure is a bit more of a big deal because the 49ers have been looking for a backup for Frank Gore for some time now. Gore gets banged up here and there and it'd be nice to have a solid option behind him.

Enter Brian Westbrook. Once Coffee retired, the 49ers put on the press and convinced Westbrook to sign a 1-year incentive laden deal with the team. He started practicing with the team yesterday, but it remains to be seen if he'll play on Sunday.

Some guys to keep an eye on this week

RB Anthony Dixon: He was selected in the sixth round this year and in his debut last week against the Colts he rushed for 100 yards on 21 carries. Offensive Coordinator Jimmy Raye indicated he would potentially get more snaps earlier in the game against better competition.

Offensive Line: Expect to see a lot of the 49ers first string offensive line. They have 2 rookies and a third guy taking over at center so they need to develop some chemistry.

QB Nate Davis: Davis is in his second season with the 49ers and while he struggles at times picking up the playbook, he's been fairly impressive in preseason action. Raye has said Davis will likely see more playing time earlier rather than mop-up time.

NT Ricky Jean Francois: The 49ers starting nose tackle, Aubrayo Franklin, is waiting another week or two to sign his franchise tender (to avoid injury). Second year player RJF (a 7th round pick in 2009) has received virtually all the first and second team snaps at NT and has performed quite well. The team still wants Franklin signed, but RJF is making giant strides.

S Taylor Mays: The 2nd round pick is a big hitter who struggles in coverage. Expect one or two big hits and one or two big misses on a pass.

So, go ahead and open up with the questions. I'll do my best to provide you with the best info possible.

That's uncalled for

Seriously, I know I and probably most of the other people on this site wouldn’t like it if somebody posted a replay of the Saints winning the NFC Championship Game, let’s at least try to keep this courteous and civilized.

Anyway, to Fooch, a couple questions. In the Rams game, a couple of our young DB’s put on a pretty good showing, most notably Chris Cook. Do you think the 49ers will try to test our younger DB’s, and if so, who are the names to watch out for in your receiving corps? Also, with two rookies on your offensive line, are you at all worried about your quarterback against our D-line?

First off, thanks for the comment about the video. I had to step away from my computer to avoid making some kind of angry comment. But hey, you guys won, so that’s life. I figured I’d just ignore it as best I could.

WRs: The 49ers have a fun group of young receivers. Their oldest receiver is 25 years old which is exciting for me as a 49ers fan. Obviously Crabtree is the big name. He sat out this past week with a sore neck, but nothing seems to indicate he’ll sit out this weekend. If he does sit out it’s not something 49ers fans will be too concerned about. If he does play it won’t be a lot of playing time from him, but you’ll get to see him. Josh Morgan is the 49ers #2 and he and Crabtree are basically locked into those positions.

That means the 49ers will be looking to see what the rest of their receivers can do as they look for roster spots. Ted Ginn is likely nailing down the #3 spot with Dominique Zeigler, Kyle Williams, and Jason Hill battling for time as well. Williams is out a couple weeks so he’ll be missing on Sunday. The guy to watch among the receivers is Dominique Zeigler. He’s spent most of his time in SF on the practice squad but has apparently looked great in practice this year.

OL: Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis are the two rookies on the line. Iupati looked really good last week while Davis looked like the rookie he is. Also, the team is playing with a new center (David Baas) after losing their underrated starter (Eric Heitmann) for 6-8 weeks with a broken leg. Baas has done well so far, but obviously has a lot of work in front of him. I’m certainly worried about the o-line initially as they work to gel together.

You still have a few holes in your WR corp ...

I feel you need a tall physical #2 to off set Crabtree . I loved him in college but he may have left too soon . He may need more grooming . I don’t see Ginn as a traditional #3 . That is usually a slot guy . Tough , explosive and with a little wiggle . Ginn is a straight North South sprinter . An excellant #4 spread offense guy . Which RB would help fill that slot asignment on your roster .

Your weaker conference will help these guys develope ? Jared and the Williams" will excellerate their growth .

If you want to be the best . You have to face the best . Thiswill be a great learning experience for them . You won’t get cheated like St.Louis got . Brett wants to play a series or two . That will cause our starters to end the rest period . We will see Willis I’m sure . Oh how I wanted him the year he came out . As he kept climbing up peoples boards I hated it .

lmao

this was actually pretty funny. That was an awesome game and HOPEFULLY we can exact some revenge in the playoffs this year.

How do you feel about your O-Line?

Starting 2 rookies right? How have they done so far this preseason?

by dsludo on Aug 18, 2010 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

whoops

Saw that you mentioned that in your post. Guilty of not reading all the way…lol. But still curious .on an expanded thouhgt on your thoughts on the O-Line

by dsludo on Aug 18, 2010 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

O-Line

Went into a bit more detail in the comment above.

Generally I’m excited to get young on the line and build for the future. There will be growing pains but I’m excited. Sucks to lose the starting center (who was supremely underrated) but I think Baas will be ok there. Iupati is really looking good so far. RT Anthony Davis is solid in the rushing game, struggling in the passing game, which is to be expected this early from a young tackle.

by David Fucillo on Aug 18, 2010 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm curious about your receivers.

Obviously Crabtree and Davis are very good players but I’m not too familiar with the rest of your receiving corps. Would like a little info on your other receivers as I like San Fran for fantasy purposes this year.

by CanadianViking on Aug 18, 2010 7:33 PM CDT reply actions

receivers

Mentioned them briefly above, but here’s some more:

Crabtree: #1 and obviously he’s a guy you want to look at in fantasy football. He finished with great numbers without really knowing the playbook so expect big things.

Josh Morgan: Quietly put together 52 catches for 527 yards and 3 TDs in what was his second season last year. I could see his catch total potentially evening out a bit with Davis and Crabtree back there, as well as the addition of Brian Westbrook in the backfield since he’s a great pass catcher. But I would expect Morgan’s yards and TDs to go up.

Ted Ginn: If he can catch the ball he’s the team’s deep threat and kick returner.

Dominique Zeigler: They love his ability in practice, but he’s been a PS guy thus far. I think he makes the roster, but tough to expect big numbers from him if everybody is healthy.

Jason Hill: Struggles with drops and battling for a roster spot. Another guy who won’t get much in the way of numbers.

Kyle Williams: Rookie who will likely be the 49ers punt returner if he can stay healthy. He’s out a couple weeks with turf toe so his roster chances potentially took a bit of a hit.

Overall, Crabtree and Davis are obviously the best bets. Josh Morgan is a nice late sleeper in my opinion.

by David Fucillo on Aug 18, 2010 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought themost impressive thing the 49ers did was in aggressively pursueing UFA's .

Seattle was accused last year of tampering with the rules . How did the 9ers get it done under the radar ? Be honest .

by gothicpurple on Aug 18, 2010 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Not a question...

Just a comment.

I think you guys are going to be pleasantly surprised by Dixon. The guy posted outstanding numbers (5.5 yards per carry and 125 yards/game) playing for Miss. St. He got all the experience that comes with running on SEC defenses with none of the support that guys like Ingram, Ben Tate, and Knowshon got.

by UGAVike on Aug 18, 2010 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

Balmer

The team seems to love Singletary. Balmer left because he wanted more playing time and apparently wasn’t willing to put in more work for it. Singletary puts the players through quite a bit, but I think his playing background has given him a lot more credibility to do this than a non-playing coach, or a former player who wasn’t particularly good.

by David Fucillo on Aug 19, 2010 12:43 AM CDT up reply actions

You know your Coach is a beast

When he offers to fight your physical freak of a TE if that is what it would take. Gotta love the Samurai.

I will keep Payton as our coach, but damn Singletary impresses me at times.

David,

I thought the draft moves by SF were excellent this year. The offense has been retooled now by Singletary. I see the only question being QB and development time for the O-Line.
What do you think the long term QB plan is for SF? What is the strength of your defense (other than LB). Who on defense should we look for on Sunday?
BTW. Thanks for stopping by and for being a good sport.

QB

Is Alex Smith. If he can’t cut the mustard this year, then he’s gone and we’ll draft a new one. Nate Davis is our 3rd stringer and he’s going to get some looks earlier in the game against better competition. I doubt he’ll turn into a starter for us though.

Defensively look for Justin Smith, he’s a beast at DE, similar to Allen. Briggs is a LB to look for also. In the secondary of course Taylor Mays is going to be on display as well as Reggie Smith.

People act like Brett has been in Minnie for years .

But that guy has been there for years . How will you ever get rid of the guy ? Maybe he can be advised to break the law . Cinn wll take him in a heart beat !! Have you seen Carson Palmer’s brother play . My three year oldaughter makes better throwing decisions ??

draft moves

Sorry for the delay in responding. Stepped out for much of the day.

I definitely agree that QB and o-line development are the two big questions. As to the o-line, it’s just a matter of developing the rookies.

At QB, Alex Smith is a free agent after this season. If he struggles, I’d imagine his time in SF is done. If he performs well, who knows what happens. When he renegotiated his contract (or would have otherwise been cut) he chose to stay in SF, so I’d like to think if he improves this year he’d sign a long term deal with the 49ers.

Behind Smith, the backup is David Carr. Carr is certainly not a long term answer. Nate Davis is the #3 with rookie Jarrett Brown out of West Virginia in the #4 position. Davis is actually likely to get more playing time against your better players this Sunday. I don’t know if that means against your #1s, but at least against your #2s to see where he’s at in his second preseason with the team.

On defense, Justin Smith is the anchor on the line. Aubrayo Franklin’s been solid at nose tackle but he’s sitting out another week or two before signing his franchise deal. Nate Clements and Shawntae Spencer are the top two cornerbacks but neither is a superstar. Keep an eye out for Dashon Goldson who is a ballhawk at free safety.

by David Fucillo on Aug 20, 2010 3:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks

I have read before that Franklin is sitting before signing his Franchise tag deal. Is there a dedline on when he has to sign? I really don’t get it. A franchise tag contract is guaranteed from the moment it is signed. What is the purpose of holding out?

franchise tag

I don’t believe there’s a deadline. The reason he waits is because he’s thinking long term. Obviously he could get hurt in the regular season and lose out on a long-term deal. However, in the preseason he can control avoiding injury potential in those games. It’s basically just to prevent injuries in meaningless games that could hurt his potential long-term deal earning capacity.

by David Fucillo on Aug 20, 2010 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions

OK. Kinda selfish but I guess I get it.

A lot of times guys are just pissed about being franchised. Thought maybe that was it.

franchise

I’m sure he’s not exactly stoked about being franchised, but I think this is more just staying healthy.

Well..

I think you guys will take your division…..
Your team reminds me of our the Vikings in their 2008 season…
Good/Above average run-game
(The addition of Westbrook will hopefully help improve that as well).
Lupati (1st round rookie) – Lets hope he holds his own and shows his worth. I would believe that he will help in that aspect. Your weaker links on your line are the other 2 rookies who are inexperienced.

If I recall, T. Mays was more of a man-to-man coverage guy? I know he’s a physical beast, but how well does he fit your scheme?

Your WR core seems weak, so I think you’ll be relying a lot on the run-game to open up the pass..

I think your team will top off the west, but, I think you need to find yourself a stud-QB and improve your receiving core so you can be an offensive power house as well. Than you’ll probably see some deep playoffs.

Remember Vikings fans, this is a team that was undefeated up until the Vikings played them… And it still took a miracle pass to beat them out.

Also, I believe they beat out the Cardinals, not once, but twice!!! Their second appearance I believe Warner had a few interceptions… Seems like if your old & great, after a near flawless game, you may end up tossing the next one performance wise.

by Deek on Aug 19, 2010 3:03 PM CDT reply actions

WR core is strong, not weak at all

WR Crabs is future pro bowl, and WR Morgan is solid. TE Davis is a big threat. WR Ginn is a burner who’s look very good in camp so far. Then Kyle Williams the rook has some potential that we’re excited about.

by mr. instigator on Aug 19, 2010 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

I knew of Crabtree who is PB material, but it seemed that you maybe only had 2 receivers that stood out… (Excluding the TEs); When I think of Minnesota we have: Rice, Berrian, and Harvin…. And I would love to see Webb play WR, but our depth with players like Lewis do not seem to see much playing time.

by Deek on Aug 20, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

Strictly WR we have Crabby, Morgan, Ginn, Zeigler and Williams. I think Zeigler has been making HUGE strides and he’s a breakout candidate ala Miles Austin. We cut Brandon Jones who was talented but injury prone. Kyle Williams the rook is probably more of a return man at this point, but he’s had some shining moments in camp thus far. I’d give ourselves an 8/10 in the WR dept. believe it or not.

Taylor Mays is a big hitter who struggles in coverage. Thankfully the team doesn’t need him starting immediately, so he can learn the intricacies of the safety position. He’ll be great in special teams for now. At safety, the 49ers really interchange the free and strong safeties between each other, although we see Goldson focusing on pass protection and Michael Lewis focusing on rush defense.

The WRs are young and talented, in my opinion. Michael Crabtree is going to be a special receiver. Vernon Davis, while a tight end, plays as well as many receivers. Josh Morgan is the sleeper for a big year.

I disagree that the 49ers need a stud QB. Eli Manning and the Giants won a QB and Eli is no stud. He’s not bad, but he’s no stud. And considering Jeff Hostetler and Trent Dilfer have both won Super Bowls, I think the 49ers can do well with Smith.

We are familiar with trying to win with a non-elite QB. Johnson,Ferrotte,T.Jackson from 06-08. We saw the immediate impact of a Franchise QB in Farve. Alex Smith was a top pick QB. he also was a risk. A spread option style college Qb that was only 21 Years old. I think everybody would admit he has not turned into a “franchise” QB just yet.
It seems that he either will show he’s a difference maker this year or changes would be made.

It is possible to win a super bowl with a good, not great QB. But it is almost impossible to build a perennial contender without one. I’ve always liked Alex Smith. But he has been a disappointment.

Yeah

This is the year for Smitty. Make or break. No more excuses. As far as winning without a stud QB, I agree with Fooch that as long as the defense is top notch and you can play solid special teams and grind the ball, an average QB can win a SB. Typically though it is the Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees types that win it all. I think the point is that as long as Alex Smith can become a 2nd or 3rd tier QB we can pull it off like Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Ben Roethilisberger or Eli Manning have done.

by mr. instigator on Aug 20, 2010 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry, my homerism...

Sort of came out w/ that statement about the QB. We saw a big difference here w/ having Favre for a whole year versus the years prior when T-Jack played along w/ Ferrore.
In 2008, we topped the division, but, the rest of the teams were weak. In 2009, the Packers improved by a large margin, however, the remaining two teams were slightly better.
Looking forward this year, we can see the Lions likely to be the surprise team, but I don’t think they’ll top the division… I just think they’ll top out the Bears.

Teams have won Superbowls with good QBs when A) They have elite receivers and/or B) Have great defenses… (i.e., Tampa Bay & Balt. Ravens).
