Rice on IR?
Check out PFT, I'm too lazy to get to copy and pasting the link from there.
This comes as a shock to me, that it's even being considered. Especially since he was only supposed to miss out on 8 weeks of the year. Makes me wonder if maybe it isn't the team's way of saying 'Try to finagle a contract this way, huh? Well eat this!' I doubt they'll actually do it though. Especially since that would be a childish approach, if that IS the way they're looking at it. It was probably just something for Rice to think about, simple posturing. But I think the fact Childress even hinted at it suggests how upset the team is with Rice at the moment.
On a lesser, but more interesting, note, Childress also said Webb would NOT be moving to WR. Could we see a trade finagled for Vincent Jackson then?

the contract is not the issue
Rice is on the last year of his contract. He needed a productive, healthy season to get paid in the $10 million range per year. Now he will get paid less, regardless of whether he lands on IR or not. Rice was never dogging it. He might have made a mistake, but he wasn’t dogging it at all.
As for the Vikings, they aren’t going to put Rice on IR unless they believe that is the best for the Vikings this year. There is not going to be any consideration of Rice’s upcoming free agent status because it is going to be a lot lower than $10 million per year
The Vikings will probably try to re-sign Rice at some figure at some point. Hopefully they and Rice can find a number they can agree to, and then he will be a Viking for many more years, and have healthy seasons.
Realistically, a player who is injured three out of four years is probably not heading to a great career. Thus the lower contract figures that Rice will be looking at.
he might still get the fat contract if he comes back mid season and plays again like last year though.
Which is I think Frost’s point … maybe team is reminding Rice that he needs them as much as they need him. It’s a bit of a stretch, but who knows, maybe Rice needs the reminder. Drew R is his agent and I believe he tends to give bad advice to a lot of his clients, he tends to push them into being selfish and greedy (which I suppose makes sense to Drew R, since he gets a slice out of a bigger pie). That’s pretty clearly what happened with Walker in Green Bay.
how dumb!
I can’t believe Rice was THIS dumb to not address this issue in the offseason. This dumb mistake is going to cost him millions of dollars. So much potential but dumb things like this just make you wonder who he’s listening to!
Well, to be fair...
He went to go see a specialist after the NFCCG and was told that surgery was not necessary.
Then, the injury proceeded to get worse, and they decided it needed surgery.
Rice is not a doctor, he is a football player. He can only take the advice of the doctor he sees, just like anyone else. To call him stupid for listening to a medical professional who just happened to be wrong is a little overboard.
That is like saying it was stupid to follow your financial advisers advice about investments just because you lost some money. In reality it is smart to follow the advice of the guy who knows what he is talking about rather than to go against his advice.
From what I've heard, he went to 3
and 2 of the 3 said he needed surgery. So it seems like it was more likely it’d need surgery than that it didn’t. He gambled on bad odds and lost. I’m still miffed at him for it.
I read...
that it he went to three and two offered surgery as an OPTION.
But that could be someone miswording their statement.
Doesn't matter.
If you’re injured and know the surgery and the recovery time when you hit that deadline before the season starts you make a decision. By that time the hip had three months to heal. As they later stated it had gone from bad to worse they should have been able to see that by then. There is no reason Rice should not have had a checkup the week before the deadline date and realized he needed to get his hip fixed. Youth.. wasted on the young.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Well...
Our receiving core is with out another talented weapon.
With Harvin having migraines in pre-season, it is showing he is not getting the necessary reps needed. This is great for other back-ups to get more reps in to prove their worth, however, our receiving core is looking pretty scary as far as offense goes. I don’t think we’ll see numbers like we did in 2009 unless we have a few people stand up and show us that Rice was never really needed. I am saddened at the idea that the FO doesn’t even take a chance to have Webb take some snaps at WR since he has the stats to be a potential elite receiver. He may look good for being raw, but to a be a proven QB is questionable.. The T-Jack project has gone on for a few years, and I am pretty sure Webb would likely not be starting within the next year or two either.
I always think the FO is holding out on something we all don’t know. Let’s hope the decisions they make are better than the way we are viewing them.
You're all missing the real point
I can understand not wanting to get a sugical procedure that might not be necessary. But Rice and his agent violated CBA rules by not telling the team of his injury until he could no longer hide it any more when he had to explain his minicamp absence. That failure on Rice’s part to act in good faith effectively screwed the team out of the chance to draft another WR, or try to oull off a trade or free agent signing for a QUALITY player. I’m totally cool with the fact that he wanted to wait before committing to surgery. But he waited FOUR MONTHS before telling the team, and in the process really limited their available options to deal with this mess. Royal douche.
Where do you get that from?
Sounds like you are digging for a reason to disparage Rice.
The team knew about it in the offseason:
Childress said all the specialists, along with team doctors, agreed that surgery was not needed in the offseason.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp10/news/story?id=5492055
If the team doctors said it didn’t need surgery in the off-season, then the team SURELY knew about it.
You need to check those dates.
The original reports all said the team was first notified when May minicamp started and they wanted to know why Rice wasn’t participating. Do the math. Injured in January, notified the team in May — FOUR months later. Surgery in August, another THREE months later. Out for at least 2 months. Add it up, and he’ll miss anywhere from 2 months of games to the entire 4 month season, after having waited a full SEVEN months to get the surgery! Be a fan boy if you want. The facts make it clear that Rice screwed up. BAD.
Injured Reserve option
I say go for it. Keep in mind, if they don’t, then that means other players are going to spend at least half the season covering for Rice until he gets back, then one of those players will have to be cut just to make room for Rice! Not fair. You screw your team like this, go ahead and sit on the IR. Maybe his dirtbag agent can keep him company.
Put him on the shelf
After the PUP is through, put him on the shelf (IR) for next year. This injury is going to take many weeks to come back from. We would be lucky to see him back in week 12.
IR not so bad
Realistically, is he going to come roaring back this year, even by December? I kind of doubt it, because I heard he’ll be on crutches for 8 weeks post-op.
So Rice should be off-crutches about the time we play our fifth game.
PUP list is for 6 games so the IR decision will have to be made about a week and a half after he’s supposed to be off crutches. No room for any setbacks. It would be nice to know what procedure Sidney got done and the details of what his injury involved as nobody really has any idea how much re-hab he’ll need to get back to 100%.

If he rehabs like Henderson did
He could be back by game 2. :D
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
dude, 8 weeks could easily be 12 weeks, and could have lingering affects.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
