The Strib's Judd Zulgad is reporting that Brett Favre began informing Vikings personnel late last night that he is NOT returning to the team and he is retiring for a third time. Brad Childress is set to address the media at 11:30 this morning, where I'm sure we'll find out more.

Stay tuned--this could be a pretty huge day.

But, but...Deanna's health-club membership????

The Star-Trib says Favre’s ankle is not responding to treatment, and that is why he is not coming back.

Yes, I would not be shocked if this is a repeat of last aummer’s drama…and, uh, the five or so years before that in Green Bay, and Favre ends up taking the field in New Orleans.

But, what if the man’s ankle really is not up to it? I can’t blast him if his body just can’t take the hits or perform anymore.

At least the Vikings have a rock-solid plan in place at QB if Favre really is done—oh, crap.

Will this be a sad day?

Potentially yes…

Does not help when we’ve been reading how the team is not doing so hot QB wise…..

Is this another potential cover?
Potentially, yes.. One could only hope…

I think its still early yet..

I almost would of preferred a later announcement.. Be sure prior to giving the yes/no.. Don’t say no than yes, don’t say yes than no.. Wait it out until you just know for sure.

I feel like the Vikings could have drafted a QB regardless of Favre’s situation. No one knew if he was coming back or not, why not draft a QB (aside from Webb)?

The answer is obvious

The Vikings did not evaluate any of the top QBs available in this draft, except Bradford, as a decent QB to train as the QBOF. Only the future will tell if they were correct.

We won't know that until they perform in the future.

But of all of them the only draft pick that could have been ready this year was probably Bradford.

The discussion over the last year or so has been “does a team build to win now or build for the future?”. Always an interesting question.

Who cares.

We have no depth at QB. It was Favre or nuts.

Right now I’m looking at a 7-9 season for us.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

No I think he'd agree we're a 7-9 team

just he’d think that is acceptable QB depth.

by Grime on Aug 3, 2010 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Come on down step off the ledge.

We won 10 w/ TJ and Gus with fewer weapons on offense. We can do it again.

by KC612 on Aug 3, 2010 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

That was more Gus that TJ

As well our running attack was much better then as well. Lastly, Green Bay and Chicago were not as good either, hell Detroit was much worse back then.

It will also be interesting to see how this affects team morale. I know most of the pro bowlers on the team were looking forward to Favre coming back. People don’t just get over that kind of disapointment.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Aug 3, 2010 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions

No.

That was more Adrian Peterson. Check Gus stats during that stretch. I’m pretty sure he threw for more INT’s than TD’s.

by KC612 on Aug 3, 2010 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

we agree.

but Gus was at the helm for more of those games.
even when #7 was ‘well enough’ to play, Chilly stuck with Gus.

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Aug 3, 2010 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Then when Gus was 'well enough' to play

Chili stuck with TJ…yeah, I don’t get it either.

by KC612 on Aug 3, 2010 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

He did it for two reasons that I read

First was that TJ did not understand the play book even after being there for a good while. Second, TJ had no confidence in his abilities and was said to be ‘just trying not to lose’. Now the first reason would be why Gus won more with the team even though his stats were about the same as TJ’s.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Aug 3, 2010 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

That team won in spite of Gus (more TDs than INTs) and TJ (only did well vs. some of the easier secondaries and Giants’ backups), mostly because of AP.

by KC Viking on Aug 3, 2010 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

That was then.

The competition in the NFC North alone was not as stout as it will be this season, and the OL was better in 2008. 10 wins then = 7 or 8 now.

by KC Viking on Aug 3, 2010 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Well considering in 2008 we split with the bears and packers, and swept the lions, so to “lose” 3 wins the Vikings get swept by the packers and bears and lose a game to the Lions?

It would be the first one win in division season since Bud Grant’s first year (even then we had a couple of ties).

by d_fens on Aug 3, 2010 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the Vikes without Favre could be swept by the Packers, split with CHI and lose 1 to DET. They could also lose 1-3 more games vs. the other 10 teams on the schedule.

by KC Viking on Aug 3, 2010 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Even so

The Vikes did not make it to the SB during what was a Hall of Famer’s career year. Surely there will be a significant dropoff from that to any version of Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels.

Just great

Well we’re officially screwed. And now begins the reign of the annoying Packers, who actually have a QB for the future, unlike us.

And I officially hope we nearly kill any Saints players of any importance in our game with them. We have those a-holes to thank for his ankle being shot – bunch of pansy cheapshot artists, anyway.

The season was looking pretty exciting up until now. Guess I’ll just have to focus on Fantasy Football to get my kicks because anyone with half a brain can tell that T-Suck isn’t going to get the job done. And yeah, we’re going to hear a bunch of apologists for the team reminding us of all the other pieces that are in place but the cold harsh fact is that without a star QB, it’s nearly impossible to get anywhere.

DAMN. \:(

Dilfer

A good point about Dilfer and the Baltimore Super Bowl-winning team…but the Vikings defense, while very good, may not be the caliber of that scary Ray Lewis-led team.

Plus, Dilfer merely did not screw up enough to cost his team their shot at the Lombardi; others will differ with me, but I do not feel confident that T-Jack, or Rosenfels, has reached that level of basic competence.

In all actuallity I hope the pundits beat Childress to death for this

He had opporunities to shore up this position and didn’t avail himself of any of them. The hope and a prayer philosophy is straight up retarded. I can understand not goign after McNabb, however, not getting a new Rookie to come play for us is immensley short sighted.

Honestly, the only hope we really have right now is that Gerhart is enourmously talented and we can get our run game going gang buster. Because, there is no way people are going to respect our passing anymore. God, I can’t wait to see TJ buckle under the pressure.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

Totally agree with you, Grime

I had a hunch that would come back to bite us – how stupid of them.

T-Suck’s choking this season is going to make Childress really regret his decisions in this regard.

by AnthonyD on Aug 3, 2010 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Why would you blame Chilly instead of Spielman.

He is the one that evaluated the draft class as not QBOF material. And why would we believe that Brett’s retirement would make those draft choices any better.

The Vikings always had the opportunity to release Brett and trade for McNabb. We could have traded for Campbell. This is not news to the FO. They have evaluated T-Jack as a better alternative than the other answers.

by lifelongvike on Aug 3, 2010 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it is one or the other, it is both!

I was on board the Tebow bandwagon prior to the draft and then I switched to Clausen once Tebow was gone and he was still there after we trade down.

Clausen may suck. No question that is a possibility.

But if I am running the Vikings, I have to take that QB this year when everyone knew that it was possible for Favre to finally hang them up.

I would not have passed on the chance. By all accounts we were pretty set anyway even in the DB department. So I would have done it. He would not have played anyway but he would have been a nice guy to have on the bench.

Oh well. Chilly has his work cut out for him now if it is true. No question on that. He will be lampooned for passing on all the QBs if TJack does not play well.

He also has to manage the psyche of the team too. This will probably be his biggest challenge.

This just escalated the QB position to the top of the heap for next year’s free agenecy and draft!

by MarkSP18 on Aug 3, 2010 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep- We talked this possibility out during the draft.

I thought Clausen would have been a good pick-up. But I am not an evaluator of QB talent. I have always felt that the FO absolutely did not evaluate any of the top guys as the QBOF. They might be wrong but they have been pretty good at talent evaluation.

But you are correct that Chilly has a lot of hard mental preparation to do if Brett does retire.

Joe Kapp

by lifelongvike on Aug 3, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree

But I am not sold on the evaluation angle. They did draft Booty afterall. So maybe they are not that great of evaluators?

At some point in time it becomes clear.

I mean they drafted Webb to play WR then decide to make him a QB.

This is indecision. And if they are good evaluators then they should have had him at QB from the get go. Well he practically has been but why would they come out and say they want him to be a WR?

I have grown to like some of the picks and they have done a good job at bringing in new talent. But every decision deserves review. It does not mean they should be fired but it also does not give them a pass.

Personally, I have not been to impressed with their QB evaluation skills. That being said, they really have not been in position to get a good one until this year.

I do not care what anyone says. When the consensus #2 rated QB coming out of college is sitting there when we were in the position that we are, then you have to take a gamble on him. If Cook does not work out then it is oh well. But if a QB does not work out it is worse. I don’t believe in that.

The QB deserves the chance to fail as does any other position.

And the #2 consensus QB coming out of college is not a bad pick up IMHO.

Now all I can hope for is Colt Brennan!

by MarkSP18 on Aug 3, 2010 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

You have a gaping hole at QB

At beast Favre did come back at worst he didn’t and either way you need another QB because tendering TJ at third is not a way to give that boy confidence. And trust me he needs it especially after all the times Childress has undermined him in the past.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Aug 3, 2010 12:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you there Mark

I think this will effect the teams morale by a huge amount. How would you like to be Phat Pat right now who wanted to retire last year but didn’t because he thought he had a chance at the SB? No there are a lot of people on that team very disapointed right now, and honestly I don’t think TJ has it in him to handle this kind of pressure.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Aug 3, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

It will not be that bad

It just tempers the Super Bowl aspirations some.

The Vikings still should be very good.

Now if it is true then all I can do is say thanks to Favre for the great year last year.

And we will finally see what TJack can do. If he gets benched or hurt then it is time to cut him loose.

I wouldn’t mind them trying to get a Logan Mankins if it is true. Maybe even Marcus McNeil too. We will have to change the identity a bit and beefing up the o-line could help the run game.

he was still under contract this time…if he did come back then they have 2 $10 mill QBs.

by TrevorR on Aug 3, 2010 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Not true

They always could have cut Brett if they felt a rookie could perform. But the only QB that made over 3 Mil was Bradford. If they had evaluated any of the top guys as the QBOF they would have taken one.

Fans just don’t believe they evaluated these guys as Not being the future.

I was thinking more of the McNabb angle

with the 10M deal.

You are right you ‘could’ cut Favre but comeon…you wouldn’t cut Favre. If you did…he’d run to the Lions or Bears or some other team and the Vikes would be the next target.

by TrevorR on Aug 3, 2010 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

No.

The Lions have Stafford, and they are comitted to him. The Bears have Cutler, and they are committed to him since they gave up the world for him. Favre would not come back in this division. Perhaps with the Bills?

i’d be shocked to not see Favre in 2010. Considering the dream situation you guys have for him to step into with progressing receivers, strong D and fantastic RB’s.

Upside: We’re not only in a better position to draft a franchise QB next draft, but Childress surely now understands the importance of having one. He didn’t before Favre.

A new QBs best friend is a strong defense and strong running game.

That is one reason Toby Gerhart was added. An O-Lineman was not drafted high because the FO trusts the O-Line.

blah blah blah…of COURSE he isn’t going to say anything but that. No coach would…what is he going to say ‘yeah we wanted clausen but thought we could get him later and didn’t…now we are F’ed". or he could say “well I really thought Favre would be back, now that he’s not we are really up a creek with no paddle with Tavaris”.

What good would he cause to publicly second guess himself???

by TrevorR on Aug 3, 2010 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

You’re right, so now its his word vs contrarian internet posters like yourself. We’ll see who has more clout on the subject of what the head coach and front office are thinking. You could also point to the fact that no head coach or front office member attended Clausen’s pro day to show their lack of interest. Heck, Speilman even went to Rutgers and worked out 7th round FB convert Ryan D’Imperio, but no one at Clausens.
I will also bet fist’s full of dollars that Childress has way, way more faith in Jackson and the rest of the team to think they would be “up a creek with no paddle” without Farve. Only the super emotional, sky is falling fans would think like that.

I just had a totally conspiracy theory moment

Seeing as how ESPN and everyone else just took the report at face value and ran with it, and how even our HC doesn’t seem to know anything about Favre retiring, could this be the media’s way of piling more of that tired old “he’s indecisive” crap on us again?

Would they really be irresponsible enough to go to all this trouble without reliable news on the subject?

Over blown by media..

Another reason to second-guess the media.

There could be some truth to this….
But, I bet it was blown way out of proportion.

I think Favre is a guy who changes his mind on a daily basis…..

Ironically, Favre may indeed receive even MORE $$$ thanks to the media…. From the sounds of it..

they may up the ANTE on his pay…..

Vikings personel know that their best chance is w/ Favre at the helm. And I’m not just talking about winning games, but also ticket sales, merchandise, and so forth.

That’s my .02….

by Deek on Aug 3, 2010 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

My .02...

As the day has wore on, what seemed like a sure thing at BSPN has now turned to doubt by many of the “experts”. It almost seems like they’re trying to save face by slowly backing off the story. Ryan Longwell has publicly stated that he talked to Brett today and Brett hasn’t said anything about retiring. Chilly has said he knows nothing of this. Just who are the people Brett has supposedly texted? Sounds like a big con to me with BSPN ending up with egg on their faces by jumping the gun. Anybody remember the “schism” story from last year???

Maybe Brett is just buying time…maybe he’s opting for a better deal (which I doubt)…maybe the ankle hasn’t healed like it was supposed to…we could speculate til the cows come home. Until I see for myself that he’s not under center against the Saints on Sept. 9, I’ll believe it.

The same people knocking Favre and blaming Favre for this media fiasco need to get slapped a few times. How in the world can you STILL blame Favre for this mess? Are you retarded??Favre doesn’t pull this year after year. It’s ESPN who keeps this crap up. It’s the media who keeps asking Favre when is he going to retire. I am just so sick of these out of shape, old,and jealous morons who have the the nerve to blame Favre or to even type stupid remarks like he should retire or he is to old. You Packer trolls have to be feeling pretty freekin stupid right now. Coming on here talking smack and whoops, nothing has been verified. You stupid a— Packer fans who kept blaming this on Favre will keep blaming it on Favre even though ESPN just proved that they are the ones responsible for the “Retirement Watch” for the last 6 years or so. You will still blame him because you don’t have a freekin clue. And don’t come on here and say your overused comments that the Packers did what they had to do or it is Favre’s fault or yada yada yada. You same Packer fans should really be doing a little soul searching or some kind of search and think about who is to blame. And if you still blame Favre, then you really need to get a life.

Because you believe everything that the media tells you to believe? Because you can’t even imagine what it takes to be a NFL quarterback to play 18 years in a row? This man gave his all game after game, never missed a game with the Packers, then gets crushed towards the end of the NO game with the Vikings last year and actually comes back out to be with his team to help them win and you want to call him a D bag? 4.No official Brett comments into the evening ….
5.No Brett family insider confirmation …
6.Brad hasn’t confirmed ……
7. Bevell is nowhere to be found …..
8.Jared hasn’t said anything stupid or comical …..
9. Brett text the words " This is it. " and the networks go crazy .
10. Longwell informed him Pizza Ranch offered Brett FREE buffet if he arrives for camp . Brett replied , I’m on the next plane . (During the A.M.) Are those the words of a guy in the crossroads of his life ! At 5P.M. Brett refused to confirm a retirement to Longwell .

If this was a game of chicken. Trying to force Brett to commit . Using first the fear of the Bears with Peppers . And the supposed beating in one game by the Saints as motivation . It didn’t seem to work .
Nice try Ted Thompson with the false sources . If it were true . APC would be begging me to come back to guide their lost souls . I will have to say . I’ll be there when they induct Brett in Purple . In the Hall of Fame . He will have to stand in line . So many other Vikes will still go ahead of him .
