Cookout For Season Opener? Awesome!
No, no, wait. . .it says "Cook Out For Season Opener." Well. . .that's something different entirely, and most definitely not awesome.
Rookie Chris Cook is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks and perhaps longer after suffering a torn meniscus in his right knee Saturday in the Vikings' preseason victory over Seattle, according to NFL sources. That means Cook won't be available for the Vikings' regular-season opener on Sept. 9 at New Orleans.
Cook had a procedure performed on the knee in recent days and an exact timetable on how long he might be out is uncertain.
The injury is a blow for both Cook and the Vikings. The second-round pick from Virginia had been impressive throughout training camp and the preseason and started Saturday's game at right corner after spending the majority of camp playing behind Antoine Winfield on the left side.
Yes, Cook certainly did look impressive this pre-season, and that's why the Vikings' secondary will be that much better when he gets back in a couple of weeks. In his stead, there's no reason to think that Asher Allen and Lito Sheppard can't pick up the slack across from Antoine Winfield. I'd also be inclined to think that the Vikings will be looking for someone that's a victim of cuts after the deadline for rosters to get down to 53 players. . .or even potentially swinging a trade for somebody. Lord knows the Vikings have enough depth along the defensive line where they can surely help somebody. . .and, hey, Sage Rosenfels is likely available, too.
In other roster news, the Vikings put Sidney Rice on the PUP list, which means that he will definitely be out for the first six games of the 2010 season. Of course, we knew that already, but this move simply makes it official.
The Vikings also cut OT Bill Noethlich and WR Marko Mitchell, and now their roster sits at the required 75 players. I was mistaken about the number of players they needed to cut when I made yesterday's post. My bad on that one.
And that's pretty much all for today. . .thank you once again for patronizing one of the best sites that SBNation has to offer. Because that's exactly what this site is. . .anyone that says otherwise is lying to you. . .and, as fans of the best team in the National Football League, that's what you deserve. We'll see you back here tomorrow, ladies and gentlemen!

We can't chance anymore starters to the preseason.
IDK about you guy’s/gal’s, but we need to kick the stuffing outta the Saints. It’s almost more important than getting to the SB.
I wanted to see the 1st string offense for one more series this wk, but it’s really not worth the risk. Just let the 3’s & 4’s battle it out.
If I had one wish...
Well, I’d probably have to spend that wish on something altruistic so I wouldn’t look like a dick. But if I had a couple more wishes you better believe that one of those bad boys would be devoted to seeing the Vikings beat the crap out of the New Orleans Saints.
The English language was carefully, carefully cobbled together by three blind dudes and a German dictionary.

... and sweep the Packers...
but that goes without saying. And I don’t think we even need a wish for that anymore!

Wait…you two had one wish and you wasted it on the Saints and the Packers in the regular season? hmmm….
oh no...
I get 3 wishes!
1)Saints
2)Packers
3) …

Just wish for an undefeated season all the way through the Super Bowl
It’s altru- alter- altruistic.. (whatever that means)
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
and then go to Vegas and bet on the Vikes going undefeated and winningthe superbowl
See basically this gives you everything you wanted…
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Here
is to hoping the injury bug bites early and leaves promptly in time for our 1st Super Bowl with all stars healthy.

If that be the case...
I hate to be the guy who cut him…
wishes
Have to agree with Skol Girl here ( and ditoo on the altruistic wish, which of course would have to be done), but lets kick the crap out of the who-dat nation! I am so tired of hearing how they “deserved to win” the SB! They deliberately targeted Favre, admitted the same, and bragged about it. Time for Jared and the D-line to put a good ol’ smackdown on them and leave them crying in their mint juleps…… oh, and lets sweep the Packers too. Maybe Christmas could come early?
Dont recall
Dont recall mint juleps as a neworleans staple. Now leave us crying in our gumbo and you got something.
Ruining Gumbo
Now that’s a shame… The Julips are more a Falcon thing…
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Your forgiven on the above error by the way . A lot has transpired .
We went from six deep to see and wait . They all looked good in camp . I feel they will step up at all levels on Defense . I’m sure the Saints have their bumps and bruises too …
Josh Wilson was just traded for a conditional pick (all the angry Seahawks fans are saying it’s a fifth rounder). Wilson’s a legitimate starting CB who’s led the team in passes defensed and has 6 picks over his past two years of starting (including 3 pick-6’s). He’s the guy who knocked the ball out of Berrian’s hands on Earl Thomas’s interception return last weekend. He’s 5’9", but the Vikings havaen’t sweated that in the past. He can tackle in the open field and is a 4.3 40 guy. He’s on the last year of a contract and he’ll make about $500,000 this year.
I don’t know…maybe Sheppard and Allen will be fine. Or, maybe Wilson could’ve been the best CB on Minnesota’s team and they missed a bit of an opportunity here.
And he's only 25...
And he has experience returning kicks, should Percy be unavailable.
In their defense, this trade seems so dumb from Seattle’s perspective that it maybe wasn’t even on the radar.
Or Cedric Griffin might be ready to go
Kind of a long shot, but he’s doing a lot of cutting drills and getting closer to being ready. And he hasn’t been put on the PUP yet.
"Whoever said that the pen is mightier than the sword never encountered automatic weapons."
I believe in miracles
But we will be OK with DeAndre Wright or Marcus Sherels as the dime back for a few weeks, I think. I’m optimistic.
Agree
Sherels looked decent. Be even nicer if Ced were back.
You said you believe in miracles!
"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

I laughed pretty hard at the headline...

Funny we get rid of Sapp to help with our problems in the WR
then we get hit with injuries. I think next we should trade a coach for a CB… :D
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
The Packers will send you Jarrett Bush for whatever you want to send back…a trash can, used Q-Tip, Tavaris Jackson…whatever you want.
I'm starting to think it might not be a good trade.
We get him then Rodgers throws it to him all game? :D
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
It is Ok contrary to what ESPN wants you to think
Remember that injuries create depth and experience. Asher Allen is no chopped liver (reference Pitt game last year). No reason to freak before a single snap has been played especially over a rookie.
OK...
I’m typing this real quiet, so as not to draw attention.
NO comments on the photo caption from our friends at CSC??

You guys will be fine with either Asher or Lito
Your secondary with Winfield is weak, everyone knows that. But you make your living with the insane pressure you get with your front 4 and the athletic play of your LBs. Payton will have to constantly toss extra help over to Bushrod against Allen, and I’m sure you’ll still walk away with 3+ sacks. As long as you bring the pressure, which you will, you’ll be fine.
Heh.
I was about to jump all over you for that one.
But you’re basically right. Our secondary is below average. But it’s less to do with our CBs and more to do with our safeties.
Thankfully the best defensive line in the NFL makes up for it.

Bummer on letting Marko Mitchell go
I’m sure the front office knows what they’re doing, but it’s hard to believe that Biddle is Better.
This pre-season is really highlighting the damage to teams. With the NFL owners clamoring for an 18 game season, I hope it comes soon.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
Be interesting to see if when the 18 does come if there is an increase in team size
Or a way to put people to the practice squad with protection. Something to help teams handle the wear and tear of a longer season on their players.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Vincent Jackson (and yeah I know its off topic)
“Sept. 4 is the key date for Jackson’s 2010 season. If he’s not signed by Saturday afternoon, his Roster Exempt status will increase his suspension from three games to six. Acee expects Jackson’s camp to lower their asking price in money as well as years to facilitate a trade by the weekend. There’s also been speculation that V-Jax would play out the 2010 season on a one-year deal as long as he’s compensated as a Top-10 NFL receiver”
Last sentence is key. If he’ll take a 1 year deal, I say we jump on this ASAP. This is still an uncapped year, and we’re in a win now situation. No brainer if you ask me.
