Is anyone else having problems with the home page loading slowly?
I just recently started having problems with the home page of the DN loading slowly. It does eventually load but it takes sometimes 60+ seconds. I can go right to fan posts or fan shots and they load just like they always did. I was wondering if one of the kids might have messed with a setting on my Mac. But it seems odd that all the other pages work just fine but the DN home page is acting funky. Is there some kind of curse i might have wondered into accidentally? I havent seen any black cats lately......
You guys are the end all be all of knowledge so if you have any ideas let me know. Thanks

I have the same problem, and I know I have a good internet connection. Must be a popular site.

I will also note that it is the only SBNation site that has this problem.

Same problem
It’s only the front page and only this site too. Comcast better put their sponsorship to work : )
Yep, been like this for a couple weeks now.
But there was one evening when it was really fast for some time, then back to slug-load.
ditto, it's a sloooooow loader on this end too.

It's boxxet.com
I’ve posted that a couple times in the last week, one time I got it to be the first post in an article by gonzo so I thought sure it would be seen, but didn’t get an acknowledgment. Boxxet appears to be the aggregator that fills all the border area of the page with all that useless widget crap.
This will kill DN if it doesn’t get better. They better fix it soon.
“Boxxet (pronounced “box set”) brings together the “best of” news, blogs, videos, photos, gear and much more on your favorite subjects. For the things you care about (teams, hobbies, interests, schools, towns, etc), Boxxet"s unique combination of computer automation and community participation produces the most diverse and complete best-of compilations."
The site"s mix of community interaction + automation makes it easier for information to be aggregated and vetted by members; Boxxet also has a very sleek design and features plenty of media.
You can confirm this for yourself, -and actually get rid of the problem - in firefox. You do this by Installing & configuring the NoScript plugin, and blocking boxxet.com. There are a bunch of other domains that blocking helps speed things up too, but just blocking boxxet alone gets you 95% of the way there. it’ll load < 5 sec just by dong that.
By the way, the IT guys who configured this site should have their knuckles rapped. I’ve never seen a web page run scripts from so many different domains — FIFTEEN — it’s ridiculous. And overkill. By comparison, WindyCityGridiron main page only runs scripts from a total of seven domains (none of them boxxet)

I did a quick search for you.
Apparently the “noscript” program is only available with Firefox. It has been very successful. IE has installed a script blocker on IE version 8. Its not the same but it might solve the problem if you have updated to IE8.. Here is your Link to the story.
Hope this helps.

I installed the NoScript.
I had a little trouble logging in. Hit “allow Daily norseman” and it fixed it but I’m now running most of the scripts.
I know there is a better way to just block Boxxet using “Noscript” and still log in successfully. What is it? Plese be basic.
"Is it normal to wake up in the morning in a sweat because you can't wait to beat another human's guts out?"
Joe Kapp
Yeah it’s NoScript can be more pain than its worth to implement globally, which is what they recommend they do. I used to use it that way but gave up long ago. Instead of what you did, try to use it in a targetted fashion (as an exception case handler, not globally with affirmative exceptions):
1. Go to the NoScript icon in the lower right conrner of the browser window, right click, select “Allow scripts globally (dangerous!),” and click "do it anyway (or whatever) when it throws up the dialog boxing insisting its a bad idea. By allowing scritp globally, all you are doing is universally disabling NoScript’s blocking, which is really just resetting firefox to work just like it did before you installed NoScript (did you realize you’ve “been living dangerously” all this time, lol?)
2. Now click on the NoScript icon again, and click “Mark boxxet.com as untrusted” Try refreshing the main page now, and you should see a big improvement, though it still is a bit more pokey than other SB sites. So far the only thing I have seen is that some of the word wrap around pictures in main page posts MIGHT have been altered in how they lay out (I’m not sure, but I think so, and it’s really not a big deal, just looks a little different). Oh and some stuff has probably disappeared from the margins — I can’t say exactly what, since I don’t really ever pay attention to that stuff.
There are other scripts that can be disabled, but I’ll leave those alone in my public posts since they are not big irritants to the refresh cycle, they only take maybe a few secs in aggregate. Most people might want to leave those on, to let the site get ad revenue from them. I’m only targetting boxxet here because that script is blatantly destroying the usability of this site.
Same problem.
for about two weeks now. does not matter which browser I try. It does not happen on other SB Nation sites.

Ok- This works really well- Now
I am fortunate enough to have Firefox. " Its a great free browser."
For those uninitiated, like myself, you simply go to “tools”, then “add-ons”. Click on “add-ons” and the list will populate. Then hit the one that is titled as “Noscript”
It downloaded fast.
It made the front page work great.
It did create a log in issue. But even I figured out how to get on but I will check with puddnhead about it.

Not sure why it's so bad on DN's site
Most of the other SB sites seem to load faster than yours. I would think boxxet.com that Puddinhead mentions would be tied to all the SB sites, but maybe not. Granted, it seems to have been taking longer to load more recently than it has in the past, but it seems to have always been a bit longer than the others. I’m still running IE as opposed to Firefox, though.
Puddinhead is right about making sure to rec this fanpost. Try to be sure the problem is on SB’s radar…

I am estatic with the solution Puddnhead suggested.
Front page loads as fast as any other page.

Only at the DN
Not seeing the problem at any of the other SBN sites I just visited (Cards and Pack). Maybe this is something that Chris can fix.

np. glad i could help. scroll up and see my more detailed instructions on how to implment though, even though you already have it working it sounds like. If you use noscript in the default manner, the way they tell you to use it, I think you will find it to be a PITA very quickly.
Not sure what you mean to "rec it" but it did work great

Hmmm
Mine is hit and miss. Takes forever to load at work…allegedly :).
At home, sometimes it loads right away, sometimes not. I’ll see if the fix works.
Maybe I’ll try Firefox. Be prepared for the world to end if I do, though. Just sayin’…

And so far this morning this fix has cleaned up a couple other sites for me. I’m putting Puddnhead on speed dial.

Heck...
I have gotten to the point where I click my link to DN, hit “stop” as soon as the frames load, login, and then just go straight to my profile page due to the amount of time I spend waiting.
Annoying….
I think I mentioned this problem a good 6 months ago, but it got lost in Favregeddon.
yes, it has been around that long, and i mentioned it repeatedly too. It was only three weeks ago that it got so intolerable that I investigated and came up with the NoScript hack.
See the technicians response below. They are to busy to monitor are issues.

Noscript not a solution for me...
I got the most recent version from their site, which is not compatible with Firefox 3.6.8. Are you guys all using an older version of Firefox?
I will be glad to if you can tell me how to find it.
I was pretty sure it was 3.6 but it might be updated. How do I find out.

There was indeed some Boxxet code running a script in one of the front page sidebar widgets that we just killed. The front page seems to be loading normally now.

Was it brought up on the site?
Because there are now over 275 sites that we have to monitor, posts about technical problems often fall through the cracks because we can only have so many Product Team eyeballs on the content. If you experience issues like this, feel free to post about them to see if others are having the issue, but the best way to get it corrected is to email support@sbnation.com. This way it does not fall through the cracks.

Maybe the site administrators should be in charge of that.
All I know is this has been a most frustrating issue that has been commented on before. Wouldn’t it be a fair assumption that the people who run this site were having their own front page load up like a turtle? Most people like me thought it was a personal PC problem.
But thanks for the tip. I will file it away if I need it again.

I did post it a few times, yes, and in the final post or two I made about it I even fingered boxxet. And it sounds like Bjorno and others did too. But I just posted comments to the main articles every now and then pointing it out, & that didn’t go anywhere, and bsides I assumed the admins had to be experiencing it too … it was intolerable. (I mistakenly thought that was more likely to be seen by someone than a fanpost — good job j-a-v!)
After I figured out the workaround though, I guess I didn’t worry about it much :)
I can confirm this. Firefox+NoScript config should (hopefully!) no longer be necessary to get acceptable refresh times.
Hey PDNHD
What the hell is a script ,anyway? The Noscript info said it was an added security issue.

noscript exaggerates too much. seriously. it’s a great tool, but they do a disservice by making people who aren’t techies like me panic and create more work to look at websites than they really need to, by calling EVERYTHING a security threat by default, and implying you have to block everything and then open exceptions to that wall, instead of allowing everything (the default browser experience) and using noscript to selectively block the misbehavers (the setup process I described in a post above). For some reason NS makes it sound like you’re doing something very bad by using it that way.
If that didn’t make sense, don’t worry about it, and just deactivate noscript now (Tools>Add-ons, select the puzzle pice icon (extensions), click on NoScript, then click either Disable or Uninstall (your call). It doesn’t look like you need it to make DN acceptable anymore.
scripts are ‘packaged programming’ – frequently requesting data to load from another source or perform some other activity.
Smart programmers, instead of typing and re-typing every line of code for the routine they want run, each time they want it run, will ‘package’ their code into a ‘script’. Then, they just call on the script to do it’s thing.
I BELIEVE...
by ArizonaVikingsFan on Sep 1, 2010 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions
This is the correct generic definition of script, but just to clarify what NoScript does in particular — it doesn’t really let you control specific scripts in a web page per se, but rather controls which sets of scripts using specific technologies (Java, Javascript, etc) run according to what domain (external to dailynorseman.com) they access. So there might have been one script calling to boxxet, there might have been 50, but all were blocked or allowed by NoScript with a single toggle. What I counseled people to do before Chris Haines came along was to use NoScript to make firefox ignore (not even run) every script (block of code) on dailynorseman that did a data fetch to boxxet.com.
I think they call it NoScript because it’s default behavior (as I described above) is to literally block every script call, regardless of domain. I would have not called it NoScript myself, and not configured the default behavior like that. But I guess they thought it best to err on the side of safety, over ease of use.
Does it hurt for me to keep it running? Why uninstallit?
