NFL Kickoff Sunday Open Thread

Obviously, no Vikings game today. . .but you know damn well that you're going to be watching football anyway.  So, here's what the schedule looks like for today.

Noon Central Time Games on CBS

Cincinnati Bengals @ New England Patriots - Jim Nantz/Phil Simms
Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans - Greg Gumbel/Dan Dierdorf
Oakland Raiders @ Tennessee Titans - Ian Eagle/Dan Fouts
Denver Broncos @ Jacksonville Jaguars - Kevin Harlan/Solomon Wilcots
Miami Dolphins @ Buffalo Bills - Gus FREAKING Johnson/Steve Tasker
Cleveland Browns @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Spero Dedes/Rich Gannon

Noon Central Time Games on FOX

Carolina Panthers @ New York Giants - Kenny Albert/Darryl Johnston/Tony Siragusa
Atlanta Falcons @ Pittsburgh Steelers - Dick Stockton/Jim Mora/Charles Davis
Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears - Thom Brennaman/Brian Billick

3:15 PM Central Time Games on FOX

The Already Coronated Super Bowl XLV Champions @ Philadelphia Eagles - Joe Buck/Troy Aikman
San Francisco 49ers @ Seattle Seahawks - Sam Rosen/Tim Ryan
Arizona Cardinals @ St. Louis Rams - Ron Pitts/John Lynch

Did you know that this is only the fourth time in the last twenty-five years that the Green Bay Packers have opened their season on the road?  I wonder how many other NFL teams have that sort of disparity over that time frame.  Not very many, I would wager.

Also, there are once again two opportunities this year for Gus Johnson. . .who is awesome, if you haven't noticed. . .to call a Vikings game this season.  One comes next week when we host the Dolphins, with the other coming later in the season when the Vikings host the Bills.  Keep your fingers crossed and hope that he'll be in the booth for one of those two games.

You can click on the links to see which games are playing in your area.  So, as long as you're watching the games anyway, you can discuss them with your fellow Viking fans right here.

THANK YOU

For calling out the experts and the PACK already. Jesus Christ, the "experts’ are saying Philly shouldnt even show up this afternoon. When the hell did the Pack go from a WC team to the SB champs?

Because, for the second consecutive year

They had the OMG GREATEST PRE-SEASON EVER!!

Never mind the fact that their pass rush, at last check, is still a joke. . .their offensive line is still shaky. . .and outside of Charles Woodson, their secondary really isn’t very good, despite all the hype it gets.

It was funny talking to my friends that cheer for the Packers this pre-season. Literally, whenever the offense was on the field, it was all “We’re awesome! Super Bowl, baby! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” And when the defense took the field? “Eh, it’s only pre-season. . .who really cares?”

I actually think Philly wins today. . .Andy Reid just seems to have the number of pretty much every team in the NFC North.

Chris

It will be telling if the GB pass rush is non existent against Philly. I see no improvement from last year but the GB supporters swear they will be fine. I don’t see it but am looking forward to having it shown to me.

We’ll all be paying close attention to our pass rush. We didn’t add anybody but we moved some guys around. In theory, those moves should help but you just never know. I think a lot of us are hoping we’ll be better in our blitz packages too. We’ll see today how it has or hasn’t improved.

by packallday555 on Sep 12, 2010 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

4 sacks...

and a couple of others that were close, including the one that knocked Kolb out of the game. 2 from Matthews, 1 from Raji, 1 from Zombo.

But Philly’s OL wasn’t a great test either, so we’ll see going forward.

BCB free since 8/24/10 and happier for it.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 12, 2010 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Probably would have had much more if Vick wasn’t the Qb. Any time we got a good rush on him it pretty much backfired because of how elusive he was.

by packallday555 on Sep 12, 2010 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I think we have a good shot oo

we are like 6-1 vs the Packers, not that that means anything for now. .but i like our chances, they are pretty banged up.. Plus they gotto play in Philly, tough place… it really depends on our defense though

Well you have a real winner with Brandon Graham

But no one will stop the Pack from scoring points. I think it is up to your offense to win it.

by lifelongvike on Sep 12, 2010 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Well Joe with the Packs unimproved defense they automatically improve.

You know how it is. Rookies will be superstars. Old guys will perform better than ever.
The fact is that Aaron Rodgers had a great productive year last year. He is the pick not the Pack.
If Kolb throws for 4,000 yards this year you guys willbe the pick next year. Young successful QBs are always the pick.

I know you are a realist and expect a mediocre year from your team this year. But I for one would love to see Kolb attack that GB secondary early so we can all see how good or bad they really are.

I dont expect a mediocre season

But i wouldnt be surprised if it happened. Honestly our O will be fine, it’s our defense that’s the question mark. We got 3-4 new starters but who knows how that’ll work out…and we’re healthy ..

but this whole pack love is such nonsense

i kinda want to see the lions at bears

just to gauge how bad cutler really is, because last year was a practice year for him, and how much the lions have truly improved. This is all going to factored around the stafford.

by muffin man on Sep 12, 2010 11:20 AM CDT reply actions

I'm kind of the same

I might flip back and forth between Lions/Bears and Dolphins/Bills.

The whole idea of Jay Cutler attempting to run the Mike Martz offensive system behind that offensive line and with those receivers does have a sort of “Rosemary’s Baby” kind of appeal to it. . .it’s going to be ugly, but you’re not going to want to pull your eyes away.

What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your entire rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

by Percy Harvin My Fav! on Sep 12, 2010 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

You pick the two players you want to keep through out the season

Post them in your “team slogan” Those players stay with your team throughout the season. You cannot transfer to another player UNLESS the player goes onto the IR or get suspended the rest of the season.

Also, pick two alternates. They are still able to be traded for, but if you have them and you lose a Franchise player for the year, the Franchise Tag will transfer to the one you have listed first

Yep

Packers looking mighty impressive against a team without their starting QB, starting C, starting FB, and starting MLB.

I haven’t seen anything that should lead anyone to believe that they’re the greatest team ever. . .or even the best team in the NFC North.

Reid has to be the stupidest coach ever

To use two time outs when he did. My god the clock was going to stop for the measurement. I don’t feel as bad for having chilly as a coach now.

by SouthernNorseman on Sep 12, 2010 6:37 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Nah...

… it’s McCarthy for going into the tank offensively for the entire 4th quarter.

BCB free since 8/24/10 and happier for it.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 12, 2010 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Definitely. He looked 100 times better then Kolb.

by packallday555 on Sep 12, 2010 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the problems the OL had early shook him up a bit.

But towards the end, McCarthy only let him throw when it was 3rd and long and the entire stadium knew it was coming. But yeah, he was a bit shakier than usual.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 12, 2010 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, he got happy feet there for a bit when he was getting constantly pressured. McCarthy’s play calling certainly didn’t help anything either. Running on 1st and 2nd down every possession was really stupid.

There's that Clay and HGH discussion you just passed on again .

What is Grant’s statis ?? A little more than a wrapped ankle . Right ? More like sprained Knee . 2 to 4 or 6 to 8 variety .

by gothicpurple on Sep 12, 2010 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha what HGH discussion?

I doubt he plays the next 2 to 4 weeks. That’s probably ok though. It’s the easier part of our schedule and Jackson will probably be able to step in and provide everything Grant can.

So that's what a team

That should, allegedly, be given a bye all the way to the Super Bowl looks like, eh?

Someone alert the media. . .the NFC North might actually be interesting this season after all.

Is that the Waaaaaaambulance I hear?

Waaaaaaah no body wuvs my widdle Wikings =(. Seriously, why do you put so much stock in what the media says, especially since they are all “idiots”. A bit sensitive eh?

Granted you’re right, the Packers don’t look like a Super Bowl team right now, and neither do your beloved Vikings.

by chewie on Sep 12, 2010 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I think most of us are kidding around...

At least, I am…….I could care less about what the media says will happen…..I kind of think it’s funny cuz it NEVER happens that way.

That’s why I said earlier, “I’m really not shocked that the media is blowing kisses to the cheeseheads.”

No team ALL DAY looked like a team that should even be in the NFL. This has been one of the most boring game days of all time.

Hey, Uncle Justice

Hope you enjoyed your stay here. Glad I could make it a short one.

You guys looked awfully impressive against the dog murderer yesterday. Great o-line, too.

The Minnesota Vikings are still the best team in the NFC North. This will become more obvious as the season progresses.
