The Long, Hard Wait for the Vikings Home Opener Against Miami
I don't know about anyone else out there, but I'm really glad that the Minnesota Vikings season opener against the New Orleans Saints is done and over. The anticipation and hype leading up to that game had me so wired I was hopping around like a squirrel on meth. If it was over and the Vikings had won I would be happier and I probably wouldn't have spent so much of Thursday night accusing the NFL officials of doing immoral things with sheep, but it's still a relief that a game with so much overwhelming hype is done.
Thursday's game shouldn't be completely written off because it isn't as if there weren't bright spots in the Vikings performance against the Saints despite the loss, because there were. But when you want a win those bright spots aren't quite bright enough.
But now it is a new week and the Vikings are preparing for a new game. It reminded me of the song "Walk and Don't Look Back" by Mick Jagger and Peter Tosh because the Vikings need to learn what they can from Thursday's disappointing loss without dwelling on it. I was even going to post the video to that song, but Mick Jagger acted so weird in it that it almost killed the song for me.
Join me after the jump to see what I'm looking forward to on Sunday.
On Thursday night the Vikings offense looked out of sync and, well, kind of crappy but even then there was reason for hope. The Vikings offensive line did a fantastic job of keeping Brett Favre upright and giving him time to find a receiver. He didn't, but that was hardly their fault. Even Bryant McKinnie put in a solid performance until he left the game with a dislocated finger. Adrian Peterson, despite getting mugged, did not fumble the ball. He was also on track to have what would have been a 100-yard game, but the Vikings, for reasons I don't understand, abandoned the run in the second half. New acquisition Greg Camarillo's hands were just as sure as advertised, but the Vikings didn't put him in the game until the fourth quarter.
The Vikings defense, with the exception of the Saints first offensive series, held one of the league's most dynamic offenses to a paltry 14 points. Drew Brees was able to exploit the Vikings' corners during the first series, but after that the Vikings secondary put on the brakes and held firm. The Vikings linebackers were men on a mission, making flying tackles and showing that E.J. Henderson really is up to game speed. And Jayme Mitchell even got a sack on Drew Brees who didn't look comfortable all night.
So yeah, it was a loss, but there were plenty of positives for the Vikings to build on and that has me impatient for the Vikings match-up on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
The Miami Dolphins are sitting at the bottom of the AFC East, but that doesn't mean they won't put up a fight when they face the Vikings at the Dome on Sunday. On Sunday they won their first season opener in five years and they did it on the road in Buffalo. Quarterback Chad Henne and receiver Brandon Marshall flashed a growing chemistry that could prove challenging for opposing defenses to contain. And the Dolphins defense set a fast pace that Buffalo had a hard time answering. Will they be as much of a challenge as the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints? Probably not, but you never can tell what will happen.
Even with time off for his grandson's christening [insert your own Brett Favre is old joke here], The FavreTM will have another week learning his receivers and how they run their routes. Favre didn't unretire to lose, so I'm willing to bet that he's logging his characteristic long hours in practice and looking at film. His favorite target from last season, Sidney Rice, may not be available, but something tells me that the 29-yard pass Favre lobbed at Greg Camarillo on Thursday night is just the beginning. Not only that, but it was reported that Percy Harvin's migraines may have been triggered by sleep apnea. If that diagnosis is accurate, then now that Harvin is under treatment for sleep apnea, look for a surge in his production as he kicks off the rust.
And, for the love of Ragnar, give Adrian Peterson the damn ball! He's running angry trying to show the team and everyone else that his fumbles are behind him and that Chris Johnson is full of hot air. Let him.
On defense, there is a good chance that possibly both Chris Cook and Cedric Griffin will be healthy enough to play in the next two games. If so, the secondary will get a nice upgrade and, just maybe, a few interceptions. He's a nice, tall cornerback and I have a feeling that Cook will be able to win the jump-ball battle. Other than the secondary, the defense's greatest problem on Thursday night seemed to be fatigue-the Vikings offense didn't stay on the field long enough for the defense to catch their collective breath. By the fourth quarter the line that had done such a good job of stuffing the run suddenly seemed porous. I believe that as the offense improves the defense will too.
So, once again, I'm counting down until a Vikings game and stockpiling my optimism. But this time, I think there's a much better chance that I'm counting down to a win. I'll leave you with a song that no corny video can ruin for me. Which is good because the video really is pretty corny.

how many games did we loose last year at home?
you guessed it, none. I have a running prediction that AP will run for a buck 75 with 2 TD’s. But this is just a meaningless prediction, only catering to what i want. Either way, just glad to have the vikes back where they belong.
Ha Ha She said Long and Hard!
The Vikes should win this one handily and AD will have a huge game I predict!

And I think the Vikings are going to be hungry for that first win, making them eager to redeem themselves after the loss to the Saints.

I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My first live Vikings game………..
I missed out on opportunities last year, but, this year.. Got the tickets and ready to go…
So I am itching just a bit more than anyone else.
Time to go and sport the Farv-rah Jersey….
I will hopefully get some good PICs & VIDs (8 megapixel camera phone w/ 720HD camcorder), I expect some worthy uploads..
lower level
endzone…
nothing fantastic, but not bad by no means…
What makes them great?
Remember, 1st-time here!!!
Basically, from what I have gathered, I’ll be right behind the goal posts about 30ish yards back. Hoping for a good field view w/ no obstruction.
I also guess they are near the concessions and bathrooms being reasonably close.
Congratulations!
I know that the Dome gets a bad rap, but as far as a home-field advantage it is tough to beat. The sheer noise you can raise in that place is fantastic. Enjoy your game, looking forward to some great footage :)

Very Upbeat
Good post but you think too highly of our secondary. They are really bad and got exposed in New Orleans. If we don’t get one of those corners back we are going to have tired CBs trying to help our secondary.
??
We give up 14 points to the most explosive offense in the NFL over the past few years and we are ‘exposed’? Tough critics!
by Jepp The Viking on Sep 13, 2010 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah we held them on touchdowns
But they were carving us up back there. Think back, how many times they kept catching the ball and gaining chucks of yards right by our two deep guys. They might not have made it into the endzone but that doesnt mean they were doing a “good job”.
I’m not saying the D didnt play good despite these shortfalls but I am saying they are the weakest link of our D and until we sort our CBs out they are going to be targeted.
Hear you
But anytime you hold Brees to under 250 yards I’ll call it success.

By design....
the cover two gives up eight or nine yard chunks, but, hopefully not big plays. A few more picks would help, of course.
I agree Mel...
as long as we can keep them from big plays that penetrate (sticking with the innuendo theme) through the Red Zone… our Defense stiffens (more) inside the 20.

I’m interested to see what Gerhart can do too. He didn’t look too bad in preseason, but…it’s preseason so it is hard to determine how much that means. I hope he’s good, I drafted him for my fantasy team.

The Vikings think they are a championship caliber team. As such, the game they played on Thursday night must chafe pretty badly. Last season they were undefeated at home and I think that trend is going to continue. They’re out to prove they are better than they looked against the Saints.

The offense will be much improved...
… with one more week to get their act together, and playing at home where they can hear.
Getting a few of our defensive players back will help the defense. I think we were fortunate to keep NO to 14. But, they should be good enough to keep the Dolphins score down.
The Dolphins only put up 15 on the Bills. Now, the Bills actually have a very good defense, but then again, the Dolphins had the ball for nearly 37 minutes.
If we can run like we did in the first half of the Saints game, dominate the clock a bit, and get just maybe 60-65% completion percentage, we should easily win.
Vikings 27 Dolphins 13

I like that prediction
Can we move the ball against the Dolphins? We should be able to attack their LBs with short passes and that should open up the running game.
Can we stop the Dolphins run game? Facing the Ronnie Brown wildcat will be interesting. Can Phat Pat stop them? Will Kennedy be back to plug the run gap? BTW- why has no one mentioned his absence as a reason the Saints could run?
I see no reason we can’t win this game if Brett is on target, unlike the Saints game.

Home Field
The home field advantage is going to be huge. In New Orleans there was a potent mix of bad ju-ju going on for the Vikings. The offense hadn’t had enough time with the starting quarterback, they were playing in a loud, hostile environment, and there were injuries at critical positions. Come Sunday, a big chunk of that is going to be reversed. For as dumpy as everyone says the Dome is, it provides a good home field advantage for the Vikings.
Life being what it is, one dreams of revenge.

I think we have a good shot against your team. I hope we win and Camarillo puts up big numbers. I can’t cheer against that guy.
1-We will need to shut down AP. Our run defense looks good so I think we will.
2*-Our O-line vs your D-line and blitz package will be the difference maker in the game. We are unsure about our O-line. Your team will give us a real test. I’m excited to see how my guys do. Whoever wins this battle has the best chance for the W IMO.
3-We need to pressure Favre. And I can almost grantee Favre will need to sit in the ice tub after the game. I will be shocked if you stop our pass pressure.
Cheers to a good and injury free game.

thanks 54, this should be a good one.
i know you guys remember favre from his jets days. and i’m sure he remembers too. ap is our beast. we need to get him going for sure. we need to establish run to help the pass.
hopefully camarillo has had more time to get acquainted with our offense. he did great in his pre-season game with us, but last week was only used sparingly.
jared allen vs. jake long should be fun to watch. and we have to pressure henne so he can’t start to find b.marshall. also, i can’t wait to see your ronnie brown – ricky williams duo.
how are your d-backs doing this year? and do you guys like to blitz a lot?
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
D backs looked good game one. It’s too soon to call but Vontae Davis is looking like a pro bowl corner. I’m most impressed with him, but it’s really early. Still, there is no doubt he’s been looking awesome lately. Practicing against Marshall probably caused the big leap. Jason Allen a former 1st round pick (that was a bust) is surprisingly stepping up. We don’t know where he’s been hiding or if this is just a one night stand. But he looked good (not great) covering Lee Evans. He unseated last years starter who played well. SS Yeremiah Bell is a pro bowler nuff said. FS Chris Clemons looked good! A first year starter so we don’t know much. But he was all over the field against the Bills and had two tackles behind the line. He had zero mistakes in that game. Benny Sapp cost us a TD and also dropped a pick 6 that hit him in the hands.
Mike Nolan is our D Coordinator. He is Blitz happy. But he’s considered on of the best at it. It’s his first year with us. With Davis locking up his man it’s giving him some crazy options.
We will have a tough time if you get AP going.

thanks for the rundown...
54 says: We will have a tough time if you get AP going.
based on all that you said, this sounds like it is probably true. the vikes are perhaps a better pass blocking team than a run blocking team (this is just my opinion). favre is good at sliding in the pocket and can see things coming. other folks here have a better take on our o-line…but, i think we are still looking for improved play, tho.
but the run blocking doesn’t exactly open up nice lanes, and ap doesn’t always seem patient enough to let the blocking develop and pick his way through to the second level. but he likes to punish everything in his path, and he makes a lot of yards after initial contact.
the x-factor for us could be toby gerhart (if he is healthy this week) he is a strong runner and showed some patience and aptitude for picking his way through traffic. so, the combination of adrian and toby running would make me happy.
we need the running game to keep the defense honest and help open up the passing game, imo.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
the running backs
There weren’t as many high points in the Saints game as a Vikings fan would like, but one of them was that Adrian Peters showed signs of learning some patience and waiting for blocks to develop. If that trend continues…I get giddy at the prospect of the numbers he could put up. Albert Young wasn’t impressive running the ball, but he did a good job of blocking and picking up the blitz. If Toby Gerhart can run more effectively than Young and pick up the blitz, we could see a significant improvement in the running game.

When the Saints players took him to the ground you could see all the punching and grabbing they were doing trying to get Peterson to fumble. He didn’t. Not once. I think it bodes well for the season.

And it probably confirmed to him how much focus the other team is putting into trying to get him to cough it up, which is also good. Nothing like verification to encourage doing the right thing :)

Just wanted to add another thing,
a couple people above mentioned attacking the LBs with short passes to help open up the run game. As 54 mentioned, Mike Nolan is a pretty blitz happy D coord, so I don’t expect him to dial back the blitz’s that much, at least unless you really start abusing us. However, I think he will be pretty confident in our coverage on those short passes with the performances given by Bell and Dansby last week.
Hoping for a good injury free game. And feel free to win a lot of games (after this week of course), the Vikings are one of my teams in my office pool.

ILB Carlos Dansby. He can do everything. Plays run, pass, blitz you name it. We payed big money to get him here this year. Cam Wake is our best OLB. A freak of nature. look him up if you wish. Koa Misi our rookie OLB teamed up with Wake to help destroy the pocket with 2 tackles 2 assist 1 sack and two QB hits for himself. Great numbers for a rookie OLB. Both set the edge quite nicely. Blitz Blessing and Curse
Blitzing Brett Favre is a bit of a mixed blessing. When it works (like it did in New Orleans), he’s off his game, can’t do anything, makes bad throws, and, frequently, is picking his decrepit bones off the field. When it doesn’t, he takes advantage of the defense crowding the box and makes completions. If the Dolphins take the linebackers out of the middle for the blitz, then look for Percy Harvin, Visanthe Shiancoe, and Greg Camarillo to make completions over the middle. With his migraines, temporarily, under control, Harvin is looking to make a greater impact.

My view .
O-line : Pass protection good . Relief good .
But I still feel that the Center position is holding up the run game . Hartwig/OC from PIT is still available as of now I believe . Coaching still seems to be the negative to this unit . I like the overall group . But they need to be better prepared .
RB/FB : Why does Brad shut AD off in the second half of every game ? Good otherwise.
TE : Good . Considering all the 3 and outs !
WR : Coaching again . Berrian and Harvin should be stretching the field . Camarillo in the slot . Not visa versa . Four total caught . POOR .
D-line : Tough assignment . Some breakdowns while second team relieved . They confused the best O-line they will face this year . More than good .
LB’s : Good . But I believe EJ was a bit slowed . He is going to be fine thou .
S : What a group in flux . Brad compliments their progress . Wow . Mediocre . Which is good against their Arsonel . Colston was hurt or it culd have been worse .
CB : I liked Lito in relief . Winfield was over worked . Asher Allen will use this game to launch his confidence . Solid .
S/T : Pedestrian . We need to step it up .
Over view game : We lost one we were targeted to lose . 7 of 8 others in the same boat .
Over view season : As we speek of getting healthier . Others are racking up the injuries and IR casualties . They call Brett a Couger for a reason ? During happy hour he is some old hag with a body lurking in the shadows of the bar . Come week 15-17 . A dozen shots and 2 : AM approaching ? He starts to look like a lonely fans last chance for one more night ? Not much you say to put the Ring on the finger of ? But where are your other options at 3 : AM . Aaron and Jay are in ER . And Mathew will be at Mommy’s house Rehabbing ! Rolling . Rolling . Rolling . The casualty list keeps rolling !
GRANTed . A few Pack fans would like to disagree .
PAD555 in the Spring said Grant is nearly as good as Peterson . TODAY . In true Packer fashion he called Grant mediocre .
PAD555 , this is why I call you a fair weather fan with good penmanship . Grant was the Key to Aaron’s success . Nobody will fear your third back . #2 Starks . Then #1 Grant . Wasn’t Jackson benched last year for lack of toughness . And no burst . I won’t toss this former Husker to the curb . Your fans will before week 7 . Aaron’s hopes of a playoff win just went from 60% to 40 % . And like with Brett . You went to Atlanta to find your next Cheesey Hero . I would wish Packer Nation more Luck . But . All these HARRELLed victories . May cause some sore losers . Just look at the depth of GB’s NT position for 09’s #1 run defense ! Sweet ….

It may seem like just another non conference game but Miami and they’re wildcat will prove what our defense can do. Ced.griff and cook will step up big and if they want to come with they’re cat the vikes have something of their own called the Webb of P.Harv so bring it miami we need everything exposed so we cam fix it. Oh yeah 2 TDs and 250 yds for all day like my man said
