Ask the Phinsider

Greetings Vikings fans from the Phinsider. As you all know our Dolphins will be going up to Minnesota to face your Vikings on your ever hostile home turf. So with our matchup approaching this weekend, I thought I would stop by over here and put up this post to answer any questions you guys might have about the Miami Dolphins.

So if you have any Dolphins questions ask away, myself or some other members of the Phinsider will answer them as best as we can. Curious to know how Brandon Marshall has been doing? Want to know if we think you guys got the way better end of the deal in the Camarillo/Sapp trade? Also, if you guys want to put up a similar post over at the Phinsider, that would be great. I'm sure there are a bunch of questions we have about the Vikings.

Here's to a good and injury free game!

This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

I see the trade as dead even . Sapp did take awhile to adapt to our Defense . He is a good guy thou .

He left a big program to play at my home town UNI Panthers in Cedar Falls , Ia . You will like him . We are both thin at positions . I see why it had to be done . As we get healthy it will be a good thing .
What is your take on analysists saying your Dolphins suck in Noon games in other time zones . It is an inside game . Do you see the time factor being an issue ?
How will your new Center hold up against our Wall ? And . What will be your front seven’s starting rotation ?

While the Phinsider nation will cringe that I'm answering,

Many still seem pissed that we traded -especially after Hartline dropped a ball. I think Sapp was a necessary add and between these tow teams was a good one.
Those anal(ysts) are reading notes from times past. We’re too new and too young to fall into such pedantic “god’s time zone deficiency” statements. Besides, inside the purple dome isn’t the space/time continuum suspended?
Until we gel on the OL there are lots (including me) holding their collective breath against your wall. We’ll find some cracks here & there and if we break it, the big wind inside your dome will be us exhaling. Berger isn’t really new. He played much last year. His foot dance(s) with Henne in Buffalo was probably more due to first game nerves. He’s GOT to get it on with Jerry & Jerry, for sure! Truthfully? I think we’ll be throwing over it much more, though.
Our starting front seven will be in name only. There’ll be so much shifting and subbing one will need a spreadsheet to keep up. Odrick being out will multiply the def combinations. But on the first play of the game? McDaniel, Starks, Dotson?, Misi, Dobbins (or Carpenter) Dansby, Wake.

I’ll defer to more, better, wiser Phinsider, of course.

I’m on the side of true love…and a good running game.

I’m curious gothic do you watch the Panthers a lot of follow the program? One of my really good childhood friends plays for them and I believe is starting at corner this season.

Actually I'll say this I live out in Wilmington NC

And I am forced to follow them as everyone down here (who isn’t into college ball) talks about them and of course they are covered for every game… What is his name?

I think he means the University of Northern Iowa Panthers Grime. Not the Carolina Panthers.

Panther and Viking Purple all the way baby ?

I was a student at UNI from 86-92 . In Education . I enjoy catching games . I used to get free tickets . A friend knew Coach Gold on the Defense . I have a three year old . So I chose not to get tickets yet . I catch most Playoff games . Saw Randy Moss in one . Cooked for Flacco’s boys the year they played . Most opponents stay at the Waterloo Downtown Ramada . We bought a home in CF last August . As the daughter gets older we will get season tickets . Only like $100/each . God that turf sucks . A great building but have him take care . Much worse that HHH . Is he in the Dorms . Or off campus ? Spit a name out and I will have to find him . Maybe I can pay to bring him up to see his Pack . If he is a Pack fan ? I enjoy bringing new fans up at times . I took a young Pack fan up two years ago that plays for of all things the Cedar Valley Vikings . He loved it !

His name is Varmah Sonie. I think he’s still living on campus. He’s not a Packers fan though, at all. If you ever watch the games let me know how he’s doing. I tried like crazy to find an online stream of their game this past Saturday but had no such luck.

What area are you from ? Here by chance the N. Dakota State game was on a local station .

The Panthers are featuring a JUCO version of Michael Vick this year . He was the focus of everyones attention . Sorry I overlooked him . They have a nice D-Line . It it known as a LB school because of Bryce Paup A flash from the past . They had good safety play . And contained a very balanced North Dakota State team . Conferences had just been realigned so I am not completely up to speed on their opponents .
I believe the Panthers schedule is much like the Vikes . And ND State was their version of GB . The Panthers have a softer home schedule than away IMO . ND State was who I believed should have been their toughest Home opponent . Time capsule : I went to UNI when the basketball team beat #2 Missouri . The big Center back then use to sit with my roommate from Malaysia and watch Pornos together . He busted two of my old dorm chairs back their at Bartlett Hall . What team does he like ?

What is your friends number ? Remember this . He is in an exceptional program . Ferentz admitted a few years ago that they hate the idea of putting the Panthers on their schedule . The Great Hayden Frye refused to allow it . ISU was hard enough . He didn’t like that his team could actually lose to a Div II inner state foe . And if they beat the Panthers it would not count towards their 6 wins needed to be Bowl eligable . If we ended up playing at Iowa City . That would be one less Home game . He called the Panthers a no win situation . Back then in Wrestling Iowa -ISU-UNI went 1-2-3 in the national rankings . Varmah is at a great Academics first school too .

I’m from Burnsville, MN. It’s a suburb right outside of the Minneapolis, probably like 20-25 minutes. Yeah, he told me about their Qb. He’s got some big shoes to fill too as the guy from last year was a pretty darn good Qb right?

Haha that’s funny! He likes Philly as his family is from there but he cheers for the Vikings too.

He was #4 last season, and I’m pretty positive he is again this year as well. Yeah, he was really excited about going there, and they’ve definitely got a strong football program. I couldn’t believe they didn’t end up beating Iowa last season. Not one but two blocked field goals! Unreal!

I been to that Hooters !!

The last two QB’s were good . The first named Sanders coaches the DBs I believe . Sanders dad is a coach and teacher at Oelwien Huskies High School . An hour East NE of UNI . I am sure he knows my wife’e family their in Oelwien . Div . II version of Aaron Rodgers . No lie . The second was Grace . Built like Tebow . Shorter version of Culpepper from before the Knee surgery . ESPN replays the Iowa game all the time .
Do you catch more than the Packers in Minnesota . I will be in the section 116 Row 21 . I’ll be the grey haired white guy in a Farve jersey . Sitting with the only black Steelers fan there . Next year I have to go to a Steeler game somewhere ? I picked the Dolphin game because I wanted to see a non controversial game this year . Too much hype last year .
Do you see Hawk for Lynch getting worked out after the game ? What do you think of it if it happens ? It is like our Sapp for Camarillo deal but on a much grander scale ? What if Capers wants McCarthy’s job and leaves . Both our teams have a history of losing great coaches to promotions .

by gothicpurple on Sep 17, 2010 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, Grace is the one I remember. He seemed pretty good.

No, some of my family will be at the game but I’m down in La Crosse going to school right now.

I would love if we got Lynch but I give it a 1% of happening. If it did happen though, I think he’d be a huge upgrade over both Grant and Jackson. Neither of those guys really have elite running ability like Lynch does, and neither are as good as him out of the backfield as a receiver. I’ve been saying for a while now that getting a quicker guy, who can be a good target out of the backfield for Rodgers could do wonders for the offense. I was really hoping we’d look into signing Taylor this offseason.

That would suck. We haven’t really had a good coordinator on defense in a while. The improvement was instant with Capers, and I’m hoping he can turn our defense into one of the better ones in the league in the coming years.

Lol

Sorry, you have to understand, as Dolphins fans we are exhausted of the Sanchez v Henne comparison. So whenever anything about our QB comes up now we just don’t even want to start it.

Basic info on Henne (or as dolphins fans know him, “the robot”, as he is incapable of showing human emotion)
The guy has a big arm and can be very accurate. That said, last year he was prone to mistakes (that’s the nice way of saying he threw picks). This year they will try to limit turnovers and let him get into a comfort zone, so expect a lot of the Ronnie and Ricky show. He is pretty intelligent as well and a fast learner. Having Marshall will be huge, and after just one game one can already tell he likes to use his new toy. He will be the franchise QB for the dolphins.

(i posted this comment over at the Phinsider, but that fanpost dropped off the radar...)

i’ve always liked henne, i wanted the vikes to draft him. i hope he gets the chance to grow into the position this year without too much grumbling over his growth process. i think he is a winner and he just needs experience. he played at michigan, and he beat the gophers as a true freshman with a spectacular-game .

i have wondered if the wildcat thing you guys run doesn’t get in the way of his development a bit.
i mean, it seems to disrupt the flow of the game for a starting qb, and he looks like a guy who needs to stay in the battle to establish his leadership and rythmn.

is this take at all accurate? what is the sentiment of the dolphin fans?

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

by jethrophet on Sep 15, 2010 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the wildcat is a sensitive issue

When we have used it this season, first game and preseason, it really hasn’t been all that great. This could be in part to the still developing play of the O-Line and the fact we lost our best pulling guard, Justin Smiley. Many believe, myself included, that the wildcat is on the way out. It will stick around but not as prevalent as it once was. I always used to get frustrated when a team would call 2 run plays that went nowhere and then expect the QB to convert a third and long. So I do believe it is a detriment to the development of a QB. Miami may no longer have a need for the wildcat as it now has other offensive threats, not just two spectacular running backs.

that's kind of what i thought....that it was a temporary fix.

it seemed like the wildcat was a way to give your team some kind of weapon based on it’s uniqueness….and more importantly, at a time when you were building from th bottom without a lot of talent. now you have a great base and a qb who looks like he just wants the reins.

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

by jethrophet on Sep 15, 2010 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Precisely what it is

Excellent observation, sir.

I myself am hoping that the Wildcat slowly turns into a purr in terms of how frequently it is utilized. When we use it, sure, I want us to roar.

But don’t pull it out and disrupt Henne’s rhythm.

That’s one problem most ‘phin fans have right now, is our play-calling. Dan Henning knows how to feed a stud receiver (Carolina, Smith), but we played a very conservative opener. I think it played right into our wheelhouse; build up Henne’s confidence heading into a second consecutive road game, while getting him and Marshall acclimated to each other.

Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

by Dave.Phuller on Sep 16, 2010 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Henne did tie the franchise record for consequetive completions

with 17. But his touch throws need some work, and it seems like he has been working on that this offseason. He is typically a relatively quick decision maker that can spread the ball around (gets everyone involved), but he will not throw into tight coverage down field. This past weekend was not a good outing because he was needing to check it down all game. a lot of that was Henning trying to force the ball down field against the second best pass D from last year. The only pressure we gave up was from the inside, but some or most of that had to do with lack of cohesion, or IMO a lack of talent at C an LG.

The Vikings defense makes even average quarterbacks look great. Henne will probably be 29 for 31, 387 yards, 3 TD.

Linebackers?

All off season the talk has been of the Dolphins lack of quality LBs. Have you dealt with that situation? Should we just throw short passes at your LBs and run up the score?
From what I saw of the Bills game your LB corp looked like they can stop the run and get to the QB. But, it was the Bills.

Most Fins fans disagree with the LB core assessment

During the off season we did lose Jason Taylor and Joey Porter, our starting outside linebackers. This really brought up the concern as to where Miami was going to generate a pass rush from. Most Miami fans knew, and frankly were excited, that this meant Cameron Wake would finally start. He is a physical freak and a pass rush specialist. In the few snaps he took last year he just had a knack for disrupting a play and getting into the backfield. Opposite him the need was filled by our second round pick Koa Misi from the Utes. He is an athletic and versatile line backer that should prove to be solid. Behind these two starters, the most notable OLB would be Ikaika Alama-Francis. Picked up after he was released from the Lions, the Fins converted him to OLB from DE, and he has become a force against the run. He was actually scheduled to start against the Bills to help control the run, but he turned up sick the morning of the game.

For the ILBs there is no bigger story that Karlos Dansby. A major weakness of the Fins last year was poor coverage on TEs; we gave up massive plays to the good TEs. Dansby was brought in to improve the entire front 7. His athletic ability and nose for the ball have made him the focal point of our defense. In just a few months in Miami he has already been named a team captain. Our other starting ILB is Channing Crowder, one of the longest tenured Fins on the roster. He is currently out with an injury so not really important for this game, though he was a force against the run. For this game expect to see lots of substitutions for ILBs opposite Dansby. They will include Tim Dobbins (from the Chargers) and Bobby Carpenter (just picked up from Cowboys). Really wont go further with that as it seems the FO is shifting around our LB core with pick ups and there is a lot of speculation right now.

Not even mentioning the secondary, the Dolphins most important defensive change was Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator. He has really brought out the fangs in this Fins defense and will relentlessly attack the offense. Expect a heavy dose of blitzes from everywhere. These aren’t all out classic blitzes that will leave the Fins totally exposed either. With the athleticism of this Fins team, short throws may not work as the pursuit to the ball is incredible on this team. A variety of different looks and shifts between, 3-4, 4-3, and a hybrid 3-4 could become confusing. I’ll stop boring everyone now but will be happy to answer any more questions to the best of my abilities!

W. Allen is out with injury, and that’s a shame because he was the best nickle corner in the league but they are not dinged up. Actually the rest are perfectly healthy.

We have VD and JA starting.

both have lived up to their 1st round draft status thus far. we hope it continues. it seems like SS has hit a wall, as Nolan’s scheme doesn’t suit his skill set, or he is having trouble because he is thinking too much. btw, SS is better at bump and running with the guy, while VD is better sitting back and reacting to the ball. JA is turning into a solid boundary corner, but is completely lost if you put him in the slot. Benny Sapp seems to excel in the slot, which is great if you have Cammy there, as that would mean Harvin is on the outside. we haven’t used VD much in the slot before, but he did work in it in 09 before WA went down and it wasn’t a pretty sight except for the INT-TD against the bills. I think that Carroll would match up well against Berrian, as both are speed demons that aren’t refined products. If Cammy is in the slot, Sapp is a perfect match, as both are vets. D should quiet Harvin for most of the night as well.

Now Carroll won’t lineup against Berrian, as he is our fourth corner and we are trying to use him as a nickel guy only, i believe. Sapp is vulnerable on the outside, as you know and i’m not sure if he can keep up with Harvin or Berrian. I think the use of motion could very well be the difference between the dolphins controlling your passing attack and letting your WRs hit us for big gains, as we can and will stack the box, even if there is no running threat.(like 3rd and 8)

slight correction of my boy PotM

Jason Allen has not really lived up to any expectations just yet. He’s been considered a bust by many for the past few years, and most fans were shocked and scared to hear that he would be getting the start against the Bills….however, he played exceptional in that game. Keep in mind, its the Bills and they have an anemic offense…. so we really don’t know what to expect from him on a regular basis just yet

so far he is a starter, which is what you want from your 1st rounder, although most will argue you want a superstar, that won’t happen all the time. I think he is improving in the new system and same position for a time.

Yes, and I'll say this

with the combination of Bobby Carpenter (somehow, I always figured he’d eventually end up here) and Karlos Dansby, Visanthe Shiancoe will not gash us for yardage and scores the way just about any TE in the league would have last season. We couldn’t stop a TE if he was the only guy on your offense.

Now, we figure to give Shianc a hard time. I think that will be a very good thing for us, as Berrian/Favre seem to be on different books (never mind pages), and Percy Harvin can’t beat us by himself if we’re allocating coverage properly.

Davis is actually smaller but jacked

5’11", 203. Freakishly athletic, too. He won’t be covering your slot guys, though. Benny probably will, but Sean Smith and Nolan Carroll are candidates to.

Jason Allen is a little bigger; 6’1", 200. He, likewise, covers the outside.

I like (in the future) Carroll or VD in the slot. I’d rather have JA on a guy like Moss, VD on a guy like Welker and Carroll on a speed demon, like Harvin or Berrian.

Vontae Davis on the slot?

Absolutely not. You saw what he did to Randy Moss; he’s far too athletic and physical for us to waste his talents on the slot.

Sean Smith is an outside guy, but as of right now (aka until he grows a pair), he’s a candidate to cover slot guys.

So, we shouldn't put him on the Vikes most valueable WR?

because that’s Harvin in the slot. I see VD on Cammy and Sapp on Harvin as a very bad defensive mismatch

Harvin is more suited to the slot and

Cammy was a SE in 08 when he was money.

More suited to the slot, sure

Wes Welker is more suited to the slot, but he starts at SE and shifts to the slot on 3-plus-WR sets.

Most likely

but I believe we had (it was this guy, right?) JA (or maybe VD, can’t remember) shadowing Lee Evans all game, following him if he switched sides, no?

If Harvin starts at SE (as I suspect he will if he plays), I don’t know if the same situation would occur. We played the center of the field very well at Buffalo last week (as Nicky’s Dansby sack breakdown showed us), and it would benefit us to bump Berrian off the line to limit his already suspect route-running. I just don’t believe this receiving corps requires the same one-size-fits-all mentality we had in the Buffalo game. Minny actually has WRs.

Carroll might see action. they won't use

sapp on the outside, he is a slot only. i think Carroll might be a better option on the outside. Berrian isn’t a good route runner. Cammy isn’t physically gifted, so a fly route doesn’t scare me as much as harvin going deep.

Well I know Sapp is a slot guy

And good point about Cammy not being physically gifted; still, Berrian had a 70-catch, 950-yard season not too long ago. Sticking Carroll on him isn’t the best option.

Carroll 1-on-1 in this point in his career won’t be good, period.

VD on Harvin, JA on Berrian, BS on Cam.. sounds good. So excited for tomorrow.

JA was a vet of at least, what, three more years than VD at that point

And Jason does have athleticism and talent. He’s just not the brightest color in the crayon box and was having a hard time with the merry-go-round that was front office/personnel, as well as being shifted from corner to safety to corner.

Now that consistency is here to rest, and he has the veteran experience/knowledge that he does, he can finally produce on the field.

We seem to forget that JA was a first rounder. Regardless of the fact that he was a “bust” up until now, he clearly has the athleticism and talent to be a decent boundary corner.

VD was just plain green, and physical corners like that need a lot of playing time before they can play up to their potential.

Ehh that's a bit of an overreaction

You saw VD’s pick against Moss in the end zone.. plays like that where he truly stood out is how he flashed. Moss wasn’t lallygagging all game long, both games, when VD was on him. And if he was, give VD some credit for that coverage on some snaps.

I am not sure ...

…it is Sean Smith getting benched as much as it is them giving Jason Allen a chance to finally play. They stopped moving the kid back and forth every year and he is slowly developing into the kind of player we thought he could be. He has always had the physical tools, but not really the brightest crayon in the box (just listen to his interviews.. he says nothing in the most possibly words .. I can see why Saban was so in love with him).
Smith was getting cockier and to be honest it was really starting to hurt his development. He can’t just rest on the fact that he started all last season and Vontae only started after Will Allen went down. He has the tools, but he will get caught doing stupid things and get beat. He needs to step it up the same way that Vontae has been and he will be fine.

Yes, I admit I have CLS... which might actually be a good thing, I was positive we were going to win it all with Saban, then with Cam ... and even last season... I wasn't expecting much in 2008 though ... Hopefully its unfounded ... we will see....

what is the strongest part of your game in your opinion?

And the worst? I would have to think that your DB’s are pretty good and young. What do you think?

by muffin man on Sep 15, 2010 2:42 PM CDT reply actions

Its a matter of opinion, personally...

I would go with our front 7 for the time being. With 3 solid OLBs and Dansby inside, the LB core is tough to beat. Couple this with a strong, but quiet D-Line and the Fins front is one to be reckoned with. If you want some more info on the LBs just look a few posts above.

As for the D-Line I really feel it is a strength of this team, many may disagree with me. At one DE position we have Kendall Langford, a third year player that has progressively gotten better. You may know him as they guy that lost the diamond earring. He has become a fixture at his spot. Lined up at DT we have Randy Starks. He was just moved from his original position of DE. Last year he put up note worthy numbers; 50 plus tackles and 7 sacks. He is undersized for a traditional DT but he is very strong and very fast for a guy of his stature. Normally, the other DE spot would be our first round draft pick, Jared Odrick. He will be out for a few weeks as a result of a deep bone bruise. The question here is which back up will take Odrick’s spot and that still hasn’t been answered. I like the Fins personnel but what truly makes the D-Line great is the flexibility and number of looks they can come at you with. As Starks was a DE he can be shifted back to that position, and another player put in at DT. Couple the flexibility of the personnel with the new hybrid 3-4 Nolan is running, and this D-Line will never look the same twice.

The Fins secondary has the potential to become the strongest part of the Fins but as of right now it is not there yet, maybe a few more years. One thing is guaranteed, Vontae Davis will be a shutdown corner.

As for the weakest part of the Fins one could argue a couple of things, QB (Some think so, not myself), RB (its starting to become an issue), but I personally pick the O-Line. Some may be surprised as this is a line that powered the 4th best rushing attack in the league and is anchored by Jake Long and Vernon Carey. Unfortunately, the FO has been experimenting and shifting the O-Line. I don’t believe the line is now a liability but all this late shifting didn’t allow this O-Line to settle and gel properly. This should be fixed soon, once that happens the O-Line will return as a strenght of this team, luckily for the Vikes I don’t believe that will be by this Sunday.

We have a practice "bubble"

We use it to practice in when either it is too wet and to give the guys a break from the Miami heat every once and a while. I am pretty sure it is turf, so the guys should be pretty used to playing on turf. I also think we have been putting lots of crowd noise into the bubble during practices this week to make sure we are ready for the crowd noise.

As of game one

Too early to really call. Our defense overall is the strongest part of our team. This year we had three big off season acquisitions. Marshall, Carlos Dansby, and Defensive Coord Mike Nolan. Most phin fans consider Mike Nolan to be our biggest offseason acquisitions and not Marshall or Dansby.

Our weakness as of Game one is WR. Our #2 that replaced Cam had zero catches and a dismal performance game one. We don’t know what happen. Could of been a bad game, could be he’s not ready. We don’t know. All he know is he flashed big time last year but has struggled since Cam’s departure.

DB’s = no worries for us. Sapp is still unknown. But besides him we are set nicely there.

Well to put it one way

We don’t worry about whoever lines up opposite Long, the guy is that good. He is the cornerstone of our O-Line. Some go as far as to claim he is our best offensive player, that’s on a team with Brandon Marshall, and I really couldn’t disagree all that much.

Good point

Berger actually took over half of last season for the often injured starting center Jake Grove. Surprisingly, Grove is no longer with the team that detests injury prone players. Berger is capable at the position but not as good as Grove, he should develop quickly into the long term starter. John Jerry, the fins third round draft pick, is a favorite of Sparano’s. He was the only offensive player we drafted. For a rookie he is pretty good, but ultimately he is still a rookie. He was with the first team most, if not all, of training camp so the coaches are banking on him as a permanent solution, and I see no reason to disagree with them. Incognito is the question mark. No one can deny this guy’s strength, simultaneously, no one deny his anger management issues and his lack of understanding personal foul rules in the NFL. This team, as a Parcell’s team, isn’t afraid of project guys. They believe they can mentor Incognito and control him. I sure hope they are right because if not this guy is a liability for a team. Thankfully for the fins fans, he has looked pretty controlled and hasn’t tried to head butt anyone yet, emphasis on the yet. A little choppy right now they will develop into a good unit, sadly not in time for our Sunday showdown.

I can save you some time.

I live just outside St. Louis and so I got to see much of Incognito when he was with the Rams. The guy is a walking penalty generator. He has the skill and the talent to be one of the better guards in the league, but he has a very short temper and it causes him to get a lot of stupid penalties, and many of them are personal foul penalties.

Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 5 times that he negated a TD with the Rams, and a couple of those negated TDs would have been game winners for St. Louis. His most recent escapade was when the Rams played the Titans last year and twice in that game he got a personal foul penalty for headbutting a guy after the play was over.

i like this match up too. and i read that their other tackle is pretty stout as well.

i think the williams sisters will be tough for their interior lg-c-rg to handle. i think that they will be able to get good push up the middle (hopefully) to pressure henne.

question…how often do the dolphins throw to the tight end? is anthony fasano a good receiver?

truthfully, its tough to tell

our TEs had a very down year. They were a critical part of the passing attack in our turn around 11-5 season. Last year they might as well have been non-existent.

Fasano is our starter, he is a decent blocker and good receiver (you may start to notice a trend that Dolphins players are not flashy but just dependable, think work boots). I do expect to see our TEs integrated more into our offense but it is hard to determine how. The Fins offense has changed now that we have Brandon Marshall demanding so much attention from the opposing secondary. Our really big problem is a total lack of depth. Behind Fasano we have one other TE, who really isn’t spectacular. Injury and age have kind of devastated this position for the Fins.

well, marshall will be a tough match up problem for the vikes...

because of the size of our d-backs, and their questionable cover skills. but if you guys are having difficulties with your number 2 receiver, i was wondering if you would try to utilize the tight end underneath or in the middle as a compliment to marshall.

by jethrophet on Sep 15, 2010 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I rank our receiving targets as such:
1. Brandon Marshall
2. Davone Bess
3. Anthony Fasano
4. Brian Hartline (our number 2) or whichever of our RBs is out there

The one to worry about there, other than Marshall, is really Davone Bess. He was a third down conversion machine last year and very quietly put up 70 plus catches for over 700 yards. Not much for a team like the Vikings but enough to be our number one receiver. This combo is Miami’s answer to Moss/Welker. A lot of people call him a slot guy, but he had most of his catches out of the number 2 spot last year. Our coaching staff is no nonsense and if Hartline continues to struggle they will pull him from a game. If that happens you will most likely see Bess or our capable 4th and 5th string guys in the game. The TE is our red zone target, like most teams, but Fasano seems to have developed a lot of speed in the off season so don’t be surprised to see a TE out running some guys. I do expect Henne to go to him quite a bit this year so he is someone to worry about.

Sparano was saying the middle of the field was closed last year.

Ronnie and Ricky were forcing teams to stack the box with 8 or 9 guys. When the box is stacked like that you really can’t throw passes over the middle of the field. Fasano had 2 TDs in one preseason game and he almost had another one last week. I think we will see more from our TEs this year with teams having to double Marshall.

You know,

I think this game will be a lot closer than some fans on this site want to believe. I understand it’s your home opener, and that we’re “just the Miami Dolphins,” and that we “barely” beat the lowly Bills. But if you watch the game, our defense was suffocating. We rattled Edwards like he was a rookie starting his first game. Granted, I understand they’re the Bills.. however, I will say this:

The Dolphins match up VERY well with the Vikings. So, though Minnesota should and will be favored, no matter what the spread is or fans’ expectations, win or lose this will be a one-score game (10 points max, but I’d be willing to put money on 7 or less) that goes down to the wire.

So I wandered over to the phin site

And it’s interesting that they talk about Shiancoe and Cam, but never mention Berrian or Harvin. Now I understand Berrian he hasn’t done much this year or last for the Vikings but to ignore the rookie of the year last year seems a tad bit short sighted. You state you have Dansby to cover Shank and some other guy that will pick up Cam, but who do you have that is going to cover one of the most explosive slot players in the game? I believe that Favre will be in synch with him much more during this game.

Also, I hear that you have the best running attack in the NFL with Ricky and Roddie, and that AD will get tired. First don’t think I’ve ever seen AD tired, second with Gerhart back it will be interesting to see how you deal with him. Last week we had Young our third back and honestly a much better blocking back than a runner. This week we’ll be back to two actual running backs

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Sep 16, 2010 12:22 PM CDT reply actions

I think people underrate/underestimate Harvin. Though I don’t think he’ll be much of a factor this week if he continues to be split out wide as opposed to being in the slot.

No doubt Ricky and Ronnie are good but how is their offensive line? Do they have the guys in the middle to slow down the wall? Or maybe I should say to slow down Pat, as I don’t really ever see anybody slow down Kevin. I think it’ll come down to whether or not they can run the ball up the middle against you guys. If they can, I think they have a good chance but if they can’t I don’t think they have one at all.

Ok, Vikings fans time to realize something

CAMARILLO PLAYED FOR THE DOLPHINS!!!!! I really don’t know if you guys have figured this out yet. We are not afraid of him, we are well aware of what he is capable of. You did not discover him, he is not your hidden secret. Our CBs have been practicing against this guy for over a year . He will make catches and gain yardage but he will not break us. Up until this little trade I doubt any Viking fan knew who Greg Camarillo was, and now your calling him one of “the most explosive slot players in the game,” get your heads on straight for a second. As for Berrian and Harvin we are well aware of them, but we have confidence in our CBs to keep them under control. Dolphins fans can assume that whoever Vontae Davis is covering will be kept quiet and our other corners are very capable.

As for the RBs no one has sold Peterson short. I really don’t think Gerhart is that great but will be adequate to take some snaps while Peterson rests. Miami also has lots of experience against the run, just look at our predominantly run first division. I’m not saying Peterson will but shut down, but don’t expect him to dominate this defense.

I understand what you're saying

but much like Sap on your defense he’s new to the system and still learning the play book and timing. Also he’ll be splitting time in the slot with Harvin. Harvin is very dangerous in the slot and it’s a tough choice to take him out of it. If only we had known he would solve his Migraine issues I think we would have traded for an outside guy instead.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Sep 16, 2010 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Harvin may be better. But personally I’m more scared of Cam extending drives that we look like we stopped. He’s a crafty player. He knows the strengths and weakness of all our CB’s. That pays dividends for crafty players. I don’t know if he will get much game time because he’s going through the adjusting phase. So that’s working in Miami’s favor. But Cam scares me the most, even more than AP. Because he can give AP and others play makers more chances by extending drives. That’s a highly underrated but good asset to have.

First read the damn post.

I stated that Cam was not our biggest weapon and was wondering why when I went to your site it seemed people were more worried about him that lets say Harvin. I then called Harvin one of the most explosive slot players in the game. Read, comprehend then you can call me out on what I said instead of what you wanted me to say.

Trust me if Cam does become useful to this team and I’m not saying he will or won’t it will be as a back up to Harvin when Rice comes back. We picked him up because that the time we did not know how many games Harvin may miss due to his migraines. Now that we think we have a handle on them I see Cam fading into the back ground. Something else I stated was it stinks that Cam is a slot because Harvin plays the slot. If Cam could make himself useful on the outside it would be much better for us.

Also, I was defending Peterson stating I didn’t think he would tire out. I believe that the Dolphins have a solid run defense I have no problem admiting that but trust me when I say this AD will not get tired and you’ll see Childress stop utilizing him effectively far sooner than you will see Peterson wearing down. As for Gerhart this will be his first real game and I can hope he does as well as he does.

Sorry if my post comes across as an a hole but you post kinda ticked me off.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Sep 16, 2010 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions

the main point is that...

camarillo appears to be able to find the open spot, create position/separation from the defender at the right moment, and catch the ball when a catchable ball is thrown to him. so we need to use him.

this is a little more than we have seen out of berrian recently. imo, berrian needs to be used vertically, deep routes, deep slants, hitch and go, and curling back toward the qb (in order for him to find space between defenders). and i think he needs to avoid relying on his cuts for separation
(i think defenders can stay with him easier when he cuts), just my opinion.

also, i think harvin can be a real x-factor. but he has been out with funerals and migraines, now he is listed on the injury report with a hip injury. he hasn’t had much practice time with favre and didn’t really show up last week. getting him connected would be huge.

the onus is on the vikings to get one or all of these three guys into the flow of the game and get them the ball in situations where they can capitalize on their own strengths. i think that if we can stretch the field with deeper routes, that it will open up space for underneath routes and help the running game (but this will require the o-line to hold blocks longer than 2 seconds).

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

I see what you mean, I did miss read your initial post. I have seen a great deal of Vikings fans expecting way too much from Cam though. I also was defending Peterson, hell I think he is the best back in the NFL, screw CJ. He is unquestionably talented but he will need a breather every now and then, no one can play non stop. On a side note, everyone is relegating Cam to the slot but he actually did take lots of snaps from the number 2 position, so he can play both, but you guys have better options for the number 2 guy.

Well ask Mike Nolan

He will mix and match receivers to corners to create what he believes are the best match ups. I doubt we will see one DB covering one receiver the entire game. This entire Dolphins D is based on flexibility and having many different looks. The big problems for fans is that we have only seen this defense for one game, and even so Karlos Dansby said we still seen less than half the playbook. Depending on the situation we will see very different personnel packages.

I think this is the main reason why we haven't been talking about Harvin that much so far,
We picked him up because that the time we did not know how many games Harvin may miss due to his migraines.

At the beginning of the week we weren’t sure if Harvin would play or how effective he would be if he did. I at least was focusing more on the guys I knew would be playing and waiting to see what happened with Harvin. Now that it looks like he will be playing, I definitely agree that he is a great receiver and will need some close attention.

That hasn’t been lost on any Dolphin fan, especially because of Cam’s intelligence. There is however a double edged sword. Cam has knowledge on how our DBs play and he can pass that info on. Our entire defense knows how Cam plays though, so his moves will be nothing new. Throw in Benny Sapp and it seems like no one has really gained an edge with insider info. Cam can give info on the offense but he has practically no knowledge on the new Fins D.

Vikings wildcat?

Would you put a cornerback on Favre if he lined up as a receiver? Just wondering.

BTW, why doesn’t Sparano get more credit? I think the wildcat offense is a genius. He didn’t come up with it himself, but what a manly thing to stick his head out like that and play an offense the NFL doesn’t traditionally play. And it works great.

I don't think a WC would work this week, we have the best D when defending

the WC.

Sparano doesn't get much as much credit as the other AFC East coaches

because he hasn’t won 3 sbs, or doesn’t babble incessantly to anyone who listens. Plus he makes the media mad by saying absolutely nothing with as many words as you can imagine.

Love that last part, but most of all he is a total football guy and more importantly stand up guy
