Five Questions with The Phinsider
Well boys and girls, it's that time of week again! No, not "wonder how Jake Delhomme is still gainfully employed by the NFL" time--although that's a good guess--it's Five Questions time! This week it's Matty I from our neighbors over at The Phinsider.
My Q&A with Matty is after the jump. But first, since Ted posted a "quasi-related video" last week with his Five Questions, I figured I'd keep the tradition going. At first I was going to post a song about Miami like Ted did with New Orleans, but I think we've all heard the Will Smith and LMFAO songs about the city enough for seven lifetimes. I thought about posting the preview for season five of Dexter (based in Miami), but I was afraid that I would get too many "OMG you totally spoiled it I'm only on season two!" comments. So instead, I give you Snooki getting into a fight with a guy at Miami club. Enjoy!
It's going to be a very competitive division, that's for sure. Even the Bills, though they won't be competing for a division crown or playoff spot this year, will have an impact because they have enough talent (C.J. Spiller and their backs, for example) to steal a division game or two - which could be the difference maker for the three other teams.
In the end, I see the Jets collapsing. They have too many egos in that locker room and a head coach who is going to eventually lose control of that team. Oh - and their quarterback isn't very good. I give the nod to New England over the Dolphins right now because of their quarterback. This is a quarterback league and whoever has the best one usually wins. His ridiculous haircut aside, Tom Brady still has the most talent of any QB in the division and the most weapons to throw to. The Dolphins will be competitive all year, as will the Jets. But it's still New England's division - for now.
2. One of the unknowns Miami seems to have is with Chad Henne at quarterback. Some experts think Henne will have a breakout year; others are wary of giving him too much responsibility. How do you see him developing throughout the 2010 season?
It's going to be a process, that's for sure. Even with the addition of Brandon Marshall, the Dolphins are a run-first team. That's what they do. It's in their blood. But Henne is going to be given more responsibility with each passing week. This week is a perfect example. The Vikings can stop the run - we all know this. So the coaches are probably going to put more on Chad Henne's shoulders. Is he ready to carry the team? Not yet, at least not consistently. But we saw those flashes last year (particularly in leading fourth quarter comebacks over the Jets and Pats) and that leads me to believe he'll be able to hand more responsibility.
Still, I don't think any Dolphin fan or coach would tell you they are positively certain that Henne is the long-term solution for this team. But there's no reason to think Henne can't be. These next three games, though, will tell a lot about how far Henne has come and how much farther he still has to go.
3. The Dolphins are the NFL godfather of the Wildcat offense. How often do you expect the Dolphins to change things up on Sunday? Or do you expect a more conventional approach?
When every other NFL team runs the Wildcat offense, it's nothing more than a gimmick. But as you point out, the Dolphins are the godfather of the Wildcat. It's no a gimmick when they run it - it's just another formation. They practice it as they do any other offensive formation. And that is why no other team can run it and have the success the Dolphins have from it.
But the team has been using it less since Ronnie Brown - the trigger man of the Wildcat - went down to injury last year. Even with a healthy Brown this year, the Dolphins only used the formation a couple of times last week against Buffalo. But teams like the Vikings that haven't seen the Dolphins run it firsthand tend to have more trouble defending it than division opponents who prepare for it twice a year. So I think the Dolphins will try to use the Wildcat more than they did a week ago - and could even have some success out of it. So if I'm the Vikings, I'm spending a lot of time preparing for it - which is exactly what the Dolphins want you to do.
Even if Miami sees little success from the Wildcat on Sunday, its impact can still be felt. NFL teams only have so much time to prepare each week. And if the opposition has to spend some time focusing on the Wildcat, taking away prep time for other formations, then the Wildcat did its job.
4. That 3-4 defense seems to be a strong point with Miami this year. What unit of the defense (defensive line, linebacker, or secondary) would you consider to be the strongest part of the unit? Which players on defense do you expect to wreak the most havoc against the Vikings?
There's no question that the strong point of this group is probably the entire front seven and the versatility and flexibility those guys give defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Karlos Dansby is the centerpiece of the defense - make no mistake. He's the player who makes this defense go. He lines up all over the field, can drop into coverage, and can rush the passer. But then you have converted defensive ends Cameron Wake and Koa Misi on the outside of that 3-4, with converted DE Randy Starks handling the nose tackle position. Notice how many "converted" players this front seven possesses. That allows Mike Nolan to switch his defense's look from a 3-4 to a 4-3 almost instantly and means many players can handle many different roles.
Other than Dansby, there are two players who will likely have definitive impacts on this game. One is the previously mentioned Cameron Wake - Miami's explosive pass rusher who, to this point, has shown that you can't block with just one man. He'll probably be the player Vikings fans are most surprised by on Sunday. The other key player is strong safety Yeremiah Bell. Mike Nolan uses Bell all over. He's going to likely see time covering the tight end. He'll also probably blitz a couple of times. But his strength is in run support - which is obviously going to be crucial to Miami's success on defense.
5. Your biggest addition to the team this offseason was probably Brandon Marshall. He had a decent game in Week 1, but probably a little below expectations (especially mine--I have him on both of my fantasy teams!) Do you see a season similar to what he's done in Denver, or should we temper our expectations a bit?
I think expectations definitely need to be tempered a bit. Remember, the Dolphins are still a run-first team. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are still the linchpins of this offense. And part of the reason Marshall was an ideal receiver for this team is because of his ability - and willingness - to run block. Don't get me wrong, Marshall is still the focal point of the passing attack just as he was in Denver. But the Dolphins just won't be passing as much, that's all.
That doesn't mean Marshall isn't going to put up numbers. He was targeted 13 or 14 times last week, catching 8 passes. Sure, those catches didn't amount to a lot of yards. But he had a couple of third down conversions and if the wind doesn't hold back Henne's long ball to an open Marshall - who had two or three steps on his defender - then we're suddenly talking about a 9 catch, 100+ yard, one touchdown performance. So Brandon is going to be just fine. And as Henne progresses and gets better (remember, he doesn't even have a full 16 games starting experience under his belt yet), Marshall will see his numbers improve - and the Dolphins should see their record improve.
Thanks a ton to Matty I for all his insight--we'll see how it all plays out on Sunday!

I am
a little intimdated by the Dolphins now. All we can do is hope that the Offensive line keeps Brett upright. That Jared Allen gets in the backfield. And for the LOVE OF CHRIST PUT CAMARILLO IN DURING THE FIRST QUARTER.
That's all we ask of you :)
I don’t at all, by any stretch of even Dr. Seuss’ imagination, consider this a “win.” It’s going to be close, and one hell of a game, but I’m not over-confident.
That’s how I want our opposition to feel. None of this “walk-all-over” stuff.
Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

Just one man's view from shade on the other side of the fense . --GP
1. Shaping : Others misfortune doesn’t make you better . It only betters you chance of an improved record .
2. Henne : Here Henne is not seen as a big a threat as Chad . His #‘s in game one indicate that . It was BUF we were speaking of for god’s sake .
3. Brown/Cat : He is recovering from injuries . Right ? And the WildCat is a factor . But the D-Line that doesn’t need to blitz will nullify it . Noise in the dome won’t help either .
4. 3-4 : You released two draft picks to scramble to piece together your 3-4 . I asked you before who will be the three D-linemen starting . Hell . Miami still doesn’t know . LB’s thin . CB’s thinner . And on turf ? Ouch ! Your not a turf team . And you don’t play well off the East Coast .
5. Best FA : Marshall dropped too many balls to call the best as of week 2 . The replacement Center better be the best in week 2 or your team will get spanked .
Summary : You can’t boast a future now that the Other Phish is ready to move on . You can’t boast about Wildcat , Marshall or Henne as seen thru the eyes of your owner or any part of your Offense . When you fail to have a ready Center . And you can’t boast a 3-4 with the dings , lost players and scramble to bring back both DE depth and S/T players at the expense of having two future guys stolen away on the waiver wire . Are you this desperate . This early . If you really feel you can be competitive in 2010 !!!
Lets do this
Henne is not seen as a big a threat as Chad . His #‘s in game one indicate that . It was BUF we were speaking of for god’s sake
Marshall dropped too many balls
It seems the game plan against Buffalo was to run the ball. Last year the Dolphins were destroyed in Buffalo as a result of Interceptions. Despite what everyone seems to think, Buffalo has one of the best pass defenses in the league. Disagree with me? Well that’s unfortunate because this is a fact. Most teams have trouble passing against Buffalo, last season they allowed around 180 passing yards per game and keep opponents way under 50% on third down conversions. Just a fair warning as you guys do play Buffalo this year, go to sleep on them and they will beat you.
You released two draft picks to scramble to piece together your 3-4
We released two players that had no impact on the team and were truthfully duds. Really don’t see how you made this assumption.
I asked you before who will be the three D-linemen starting . Hell . Miami still doesn’t know . LB’s thin . CB’s thinner . And on turf ? Ouch ! Your not a turf team . And you don’t play well off the East Coast .
Well one of our starters is out with injury, the reason we don’t know who is starting is because we have a few options and we have a clandestine FO. CB depth is actually pretty good. Vontae is the number 1 CB, both J. Allen and S. Smith can play as number 2. We got Sapp from you guys for the nickle, and Nolan Carrol is very capable. Our LB depth isn’t bad at all either, once our starter C. Crowder comes back from his injury we will be able to rotate a great LB core. I would agree that we are a bit thin at OLB, Wake and Misi are starters, Alama-Francis is a good backup but Q. Moses sucks.
When you fail to have a ready Center
Our center played half of last season, hes ready.

We've been running a 3-4 for years
so we didn’t have to “piece it together.” Nolan’s particular version of it is new, and we upgraded the talent for it considerably, but it’s not like this is some sort of half-baked thrown together defensive scheme as you seem to be implying.
Also, in the vein of some friendly smack-talking:
1. Your QB looked like he would have rather been mowing the grass last week than playing in an NFL game. Old, rusty, and timid. He’ll be better after a week of practice, but by how much?
2. Without Rice your receivers don’t really scare anyone. A bunch of complementary guys without a true number 1.
3. I have a bottle of single malt scotch riding on this game with a Fargo-born friend, so we HAVE to win:)
4. Karlos Dansby.
Here’s to a clean game.

1. we destroyed the Jets 2x last year and split with the Patriots. We don’t need misfortune because we had both Super Bowl teams on the ropes last year and let them off because our defensive coordinator was the worst defensive coordinator not coaching Pop Warner. This year we have one of the best defensive minds in the league and he knows how to play “offensive minded”defense. We are not waiting on people, we are coming after you.
2. Henne is developing, but you also have to realize that Buffalo had the best pass defense in the league last year, while their run defense sucked. Henne didn’t commit any turnovers, but there are many on our site that were a little upset at the number of check-downs we saw. As much as I want to see him break out last week, I am willing to accept that it may take time as long as he keeps on not losing the game for us.
3. Brown should be healthly. When he is he is one of the best in the league. We have a very solid offensive line and 2 of the best backs in the league. I don’t doubt that you guys’ defensive line is tough, but the thing that makes the wildcat work is that little bit of hesitation while they figure out where Ronnie and Ricky are going. That little bit of hesitation allows our offensive line to get on you. You don’t know where Ronnie or Ricky is running and to be honest I don’t know that our line does. The goal is to push you back and let the RBs make things happen. There is no team in the league that does what we do out of the wildcat— ask the Jets.
4. We have been a 3-4 since Nick Saban was our head coach. Not sure which draft picks you think we released to “piece” together our defense, but rest assured we are completely ok with what we had. Our front office is constantly tinkering with the bottom part of our 53 man roster and looking for the right 53 guys. They brought in competition last year for our kicker….no kidding … Ireland said that he was the best Australian rules kicker that they scouted… WHAT? That guy wound up getting beat out by Carpenter, but he is playing for the Bucs the last I heard.
5. Marshall has had a few drops, but I think he will be ok. He has also made some nasty blocks on running plays and down field on passing plays that have been game changers. Overall I think we did pretty good upgrading him for Ted Ginn, Jr and his whole family.
We released our starting center once he lost his job to the backup so we could bring in a guy that was a bit younger, almost as good, and can also play G(Cory Proctor). Berger started a good bit last season after Grove got injured and was pretty solid.
We actually have a practice “bubble” I am 99.99% sure it is turf. We use it to practice in either in really bad downpours or when the coach wants to let them get out of the heat and have a bit of a break during 2-a-days. Last I heard they were piping in crowd noise to the Dolphins’ practice fields and bubble to simulate what they are going to face. I would never guarantee what is going to happen because both teams look to be tough, but don’t sleep on the Dolphins.
Yes, I admit I have CLS... which might actually be a good thing, I was positive we were going to win it all with Saban, then with Cam ... and even last season... I wasn't expecting much in 2008 though ... Hopefully its unfounded ... we will see....

No One Cares about the Videos
Seriously. I love this website, but am getting really tired with the inane babble about how an unrelated video was chosen.
If you have something to say about the Vikings and/or the NFL, please just say it.
Just because you CAN post a video, doesn’t mean you SHOULD post a video, unless it supports what you are writing about.
This was a good analysis – why water it down with unrelated crap?
Why do 14 year old girls bedazzle their purses? and back packs and hair, and jeans, and gloves...
I don’t know either. Was just wondering.
It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...
Agreed!
I don’t care that your musical knowledge is so vast that you can summon a music video to correspond to every situation – I’m still not going to watch it

You don't have to watch it.
Is the one extra second it takes to scroll past the video really such a big problem?
This is the internet. It’s free! Lighten up, people.

Yep
It was a short paragraph prefaced with “my Q&A is after the jump” and a video that you can easily skip over. We’re just trying to give you a little extra entertainment and attempts at humor on top of the analysis. If you don’t like the little extra, just breeze past it.

Or...
You could accept the feedback and consider it next time.
I don’t expect you to tailor the site just to my preferences, but to not be open to criticism shows that you are more interested in your ego than in making the site the best it can possibly be. Again, I am not saying you need to follow my advice, but to totally disregard suggestions from your long-time readers is quite unwise.
A few things to ponder:
Good writers start with the most important parts of the story and save the filler for the bottom (look it up). You have done the exact opposite.
The “short preface” was twice as long as the football related paragraph located above the jump. Throw in the size of the video and you dedicated 90% of your main page space to Snooki. Is that really what you want to be about?
If you really need to use that video gadget, wouldn’t it have been a much better use of the space to show a highlight video of the Dolphin players that we should be concerned about?
If you are truly convinced that most of the readers of this site would rather watch a video about some unrelated pop culture bimbo – then great, go for it.
Wow
I can’t believe that putting a video on the website can cause that much of an issue with you. Just because it is there doesn’t mean you have to watch it. This is suppose to be a fun Viking’s site. If I wanted just stats, picks, etc. I would read other sites and I do. I truly enjoy DN for the different look at sports and that video was different!
Duly noted.
But you did like the analysis and the questions, right? I understand that you feel that the stuff at the beginning watered it down; I totally understand why you feel that way. When I posted it, I thought it was a fun little introduction that spruced up an otherwise straightforward article. It’s a style preference, that’s all.
If you think sports writing and pop culture references shouldn’t mix, then how do you explain the ridiculous popularity of Bill Simmons?

Thank you
Yes – excellent questions and getting insights from the opposing teams bloggers is a great idea that does much to add to my enjoyment of the game. One of the great innovations of the last few years if you ask me.
For the record, I don’t actually fly into a rage over seeing an unrelated video or anything – I would just personally prefer to have things stay focused on football. If I am in the minority in that it certainly won’t be the first time. I appreciate the opportunity to share my $0.02.
Up until this moment I was pretty much unaware of the existence of Bill Simmons. I am pretty sure I’ll try to leave it that way, since I am not a big fan of ESPN. But if you are looking for another example, you may want to consider how well the whole Dennis Miller thing worked out. :)
Very good points
The Dennis Miller Experiment was indeed awful. Thanks for the logical, constructive feedback. Just because you were so gracious, I’ll make sure my game preview/NFL picks article YouTube free unless it’s strictly NFL related :)
(But I can’t promise no pop-culture references…I do that way too much to give it up cold turkey!)
