Dolphins/Vikings, Second Half Thread

MINNEAPOLIS - SEPTEMBER 19: Quarterback Brett Favre #4 of the Minnesota Vikings warms up prior to the start of the game against the Miami Dolphins on September 19 2010 at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis Minnesota. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

The Vikings put up some pretty impressive stats in the first half of play, but are lacking in the one stat that actually matters. . .points scored.  The Vikings are going into the locker room with no points.  Thankfully, the Dolphins also haven't scored any points since their first possession, and the Miami lead is only seven points.

Minnesota has moved the ball, but were the victims of a bad fourth down call and a fluky interception.  They just can't seem to keep from shooting themselves in the foot.

The Vikings need to get it together, and they need to get it there in a hurry.

Join us here for the second half, ladies and gentlemen!

People keep sayin it's the O-Line

when Favre has time to open, it’s just people aren’t getting open and than that usually leads to holding onto the ball longer, which than leads to a sack. If your O-Line holds up for 6sec their doing their job!

But they don't hold up for 6 secs with any consistency

And Favre had to dodge around to get that time, the pocket COLLAPSED. Again.

Half a field

about 2 minutes to go.

Quarterback’s sucking.

Runningback’s on fire.

6-7 in the box.

And the runningback gets not one carry. Not one draw play. Not a screen. Not a pitch. No 2 TE formation and trying to make a lane. Nothing A throw over the middle, but those don’t break loose often for backs, that’s just a dumpoff.

by ragnarrahl on Sep 19, 2010 2:54 PM CDT reply actions

Uhhh...

Have you ever heard about clock management? Running plays would have kept the clock rolling between plays. Go away.

by rovibe on Sep 19, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

So does a throw over the middle.

I’m not saying you do ALL running plays. Just one or two mixed in. Keeps them honest and has the chance of breaking one away. A good chance in this particular case.

by ragnarrahl on Sep 19, 2010 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

And incidentally

Well executed pitches, and some forms of screen, have a good chance to go out of bounds. Stops clock. _

by ragnarrahl on Sep 19, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Take the 3 on the first drive, 4th and 2 isn’t that easy and it isn’t even for a TD.

Childress didn’t throw 3 INT’s today, and Bevell can’t make Berrian catch a freakin’ football.

by rovibe on Sep 19, 2010 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

But I bet Childress signed off

On those two goal line runs with a formation that TOLD them run. No freakin creativity. WTF you running to our weak side? Chilly sucks.

by PurpleJesus on Sep 19, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

are you really criticizing that play?

they overloaded their blockers to that side and adrian peterson was on FREAKING FIRE that series. he prolly would have made it in the end zone had he cut to the outside instead of taking it inside, but what was wrong with that call??

by JTW on Sep 19, 2010 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

^^^__THIS.

Well said, Ragnarrahl. Wow that was just awful at the end. At least try an end zone fade or screen pass ONCE out of all those running plays. Just stupid coaching and play-calling.

by Wytefang on Sep 19, 2010 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME

A pass?!?!? Did you even WATCH the game?? Favre couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn today if his life depended on it, and you want him to make a touch pass in teh crowded end zone without their best receiver? Gee, looks like Childress and Bevell are smarter than you.

by rovibe on Sep 19, 2010 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Running to our weak side?

Are you kididng me? With nothing to keep the backers honest? It was ALL run no doubt. This is the NFL man! Why don’t we tell the other team what we are going to do?

by PurpleJesus on Sep 19, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Heck yeah I am

Not running to our strong side? Not spreading out the defense to make them think a possible pass? Sure let’s let the defense put 11 in the box and run to our weak side that has 2 TE’s and screams we are going to try and run to that side. Make sense to me…. Give me a break! This is the NFL!!!

by jethrophet on Sep 19, 2010 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

No, blame FAVRE

You have no right pinning that on Childress and Bevell. People like you want to blame the coach for everything the QB does. Childress and Bevell didn’t tell Favre to pick the single worst target on the field, so blame the freakin’ QB.

by rovibe on Sep 19, 2010 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

But it's both their faults!

The playcalling was predictable. We didnt even try to discuise any plays! Favre and all his underthrows proves that he’s all washed up now and needs to keel over on the football field.. And childress needs to do the same thinking that bringing favre back (AGAIN!) was gonna do us any better this year.

tough loss

IMO……..Bret Favre had as much to with them losing this game as he did with potentially being a hero…..if they would have won. He is so arrogant to think he can throw into double coverage any freeking time he wants. The problem is, he can. He thinks he can do whatever he wants out there and not be held accountable. Childress should have benched him after the (3rd) INT, but knowing Bret, he probably would have thrown a hissy fit and went to the huddle anyway. The OL didn’t help either, but this loss (just like NO) is as much on Favre as anyuone else.

by Wytefang on Sep 19, 2010 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Check the odds

Historically, teams that start 0-2 make the playoffs only 10% of the time. Stick a fork in these clowns. Favre should have been there earlier to get in sync with his receivers, and Rice is a douchebag for not telling his coaches of his hip injury for the first 4 months. Those two have really hurt their chances this year.

by rovibe on Sep 19, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Woah Woah Woah Dont Blame Rice!

Our team is superb with all the guns on our offense. Rice isnt the factor the coaching is.. and favre.. maybe if we played like we did last year instead of choosing between offenses in the middle of the game might help our cause a bit more. Our offense hasnt synced yet!

by Goldenpurp on Sep 19, 2010 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Looks like it may be time to start not caring about the season already.. :(

I hate to say it but it looks really hard to see any light at the end of any proverbial tunnel after these first two games. Wow.

The only bright spot was AP and even he failed us when it mattered most. Crappy coaching, poor QBing (to say the least), awful WRs (Berrian you suck arse), and a Defense that is spotty at best. And we’ll leave our O-line unmentioned because…wow..

Going to be a long season, folks.

And this is as positive as I can muster, looking at the big picture. I mean, usually I’m able to honestly admit to myself that things will improve and so forth but not this time. It looks grim. I guess this is why you (at some point) have to start rebuilding with younger, more energetic players….

by Wytefang on Sep 19, 2010 3:08 PM CDT reply actions

I recall you pulling this same stunt last year

0-2 is a hurdle to overcome, no doubt, but this team certainly has the talent to win the division still. Favre just needs to be more careful with his passes from here on out.

by JTW on Sep 19, 2010 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Not pulling any "Stunt" here...

My point was made quite clearly that if THIS is what we can expect from our beloved purple, fans are going to stop caring (and RIGHTFULLY SO I might add) already, this early in the season.

Just awful. It had maybe 20-40% to do with Favre and the rest was due to several other seriously problematic issues that aren’t going to magically go away if we wave our collective “let’s be positive” wands. It (unfortunately) doesn’t work that way, man. :(

Cool it, bro

If you read my post last week and read this post more carefully (and I don’t mean that snottily, either), you’d see that it was hardly an unfair post – just a very, VERY concerned post and yes, to some extent, angry. Fans SHOULD be irate after that dreadful performance. It was embarrassing all around to choke at home like that.

And honestly, people are going to vent in here if they’re not around their fellow Vikings fans – what do you honestly expect? Fake optimism after that??? C’mon, be serious Vikant. Cut some of us a little slack.

I’m not going to write them off just yet but you know what kind of schedule we have this year, dude. It’s going to get real ugly, real fast if things don’t hugely improve asap. \:(

by Wytefang on Sep 19, 2010 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

And furthermore

…this is different than the weird blotch on our record late in the season last year because we’d already seen our Vikes do amazing things. This is a tough, tough year (schedule-wise) and we’re already 0-2? Wow. Just wow. A huge hole for us to dig out of and we lack key pieces all over the place. :( :(

by Wytefang on Sep 19, 2010 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

AP didn't fail us

He had nothing available. It would not have been possible to cut outside on that play.

The blockers on that overloaded side failed.

And the coaches failed to make it believable that anything else could be a worry from that formation.

They have until Wednesday to trade him before his 4 game suspension reverts to 6. Why would the Chargers trade Jackson before today’s games? If a team loses a receiver to injury today, Jackson’s value goes UP. Every other football fan in the world already knew that.

That is a fact

The ruling from the league office by way of settlement was that Jackson would miss 4 GAMES. Forget week 5, week 6… none of that matters. It’s already been confirmed a thousand times. He would join MN in their 5th GAME, meaning, week 6.

If the Vikings are 0-4 at that point, they’d have no use for him. Do the math. If they fall 4 games back in their own division, they are DONE. And there wouldn’t be any good reason to trade for a player who’s already stated he wants a one year deal so he can be a free agent again next year.

How come on Petersons catch in the last minute, he didn’t get a first down about a yard short, Favre then faked throwing it to the ground and threw it to Berrian, this should been a first down. Watching these first two games has me convinced that we are not goin to make it this year.. Last year we couldve made dolphin fillets with miami and now we’re the victims. Our QB situation is ruining the whole team in my opinion. Last year we made every receiver shine and now they blame one person’s injury on our downfall.. NO!. Favre is washed up and so is the coach brad childress. Plays are so predictable the other team knew exactly where we were runnin the ball.. And favre himself seems to be colorblind throwing to the same defender all day! From playing the superbowl champs to an average team and we still cant manage to score just twice! Our schedule this year along with our performances in the past two weeks alone proves it’s about to be a Crucial Season! Maybe next year….

Strengths and weaknesses:

Great – AD and Gerhart
Great – Defense front line and LBs
Good – Special Teams
Good – O-line (blocking for the run)
OK – CBs and Ss
Bad (and old) – #4
Bad – most plays by the WRs
Terrible – Childress

by DonBorvio on Sep 19, 2010 3:40 PM CDT reply actions

Harvin - Good

It wasn’t all the WRs, whatever he did when he blocked for Peterson really really hurt the flow.

by Galkuris on Sep 19, 2010 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

disagree on o-line...they are mediocre/inconsistent

also, toby doesn’t get “great” label from me untill he makes a “great” showing. i thought he was all right.

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

by jethrophet on Sep 19, 2010 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Special teams was crappy, actually

Fumbling, no good runbacks…nope, Special Teams doesn’t deserve any special props today. Sorry man. :(

Not giving up on #4 yet........

but, if Lions win, sending up the white flag.

by Mel Allen on Sep 19, 2010 3:41 PM CDT reply actions

Other than the 2 picks favre didnt look old or that bad I was suprised by the way he could move around in the pocket!!!

by cali viking on Sep 19, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I only count 2 picks because the Harvin ball wasn’t his fault!!!

by cali viking on Sep 19, 2010 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

But those were bad picks

especially the one in the end zone.

by Mel Allen on Sep 19, 2010 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

The third one was bad too..

throwing to BB into triple coverage. And, instead of playing the ball, BB looks for a PI call. Awful.

i want my money back on mr. barfve

Of course you do jethro but once we start winning you will say never mind on that come on Jethro dont give up!!!

by cali viking on Sep 19, 2010 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

4th and 1 at the 1 yd line.

Why not try something new, Childress? How about the Wildcat with Harvin taking the snap and Webb split to the right? Or Webb taking the snap with the option to run? No creativity in the play-calling whatsoever. With Favre’s play in the redzone up to that point, he had no business taking that snap. Can’t argue with AD getting the ball, but run it behind Hutch for shit’s sake.

by Dom Q on Sep 19, 2010 3:48 PM CDT reply actions

For once somebody else sees the truth

Playcalling is predictable.. they kno when to play for the pass and they always kno when Petey’s gettn the ball. scratch that.. they dont hafta play for the pass because favre will just throw it to em anyway courtesy of his old age and all

by Goldenpurp on Sep 19, 2010 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Step off the ledge....

…. you’ve still got the best RB in football, in a few weeks you’ll have a WR corps again, your DL is still the best in the division and your LBs aren’t bad either.

I didn’t watch the whole game or anything, but it looked to me like the Vikings outplayed the Dolphins by most measures and lost because of turnovers. That’s not going to happen every week. They’ve dug themselves a hole but they’ve got the talent to get back out of it.

Hang in there. It’s a long season. The Bears are 2-0. If that doesn’t tell you that early season results can be misleading, nothing will.

BCB free since 8/24/10 and happier for it.

Doesnt matter

We need a Younger healthier QB who can keep consistency. Skills dont improve with too much age, they fade away

by Goldenpurp on Sep 19, 2010 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

can someone tell me the difference between these two ?

.

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

by jethrophet on Sep 19, 2010 3:52 PM CDT reply actions

the difference is...

mike tice has a pencil in his right ear and childeress has a mic.

by eltwentyone on Sep 19, 2010 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

You are full of it

Tice’s win totals in 4 years: 6, 9, 8, 9. His best season ever was 9 wins. Childress has topped that twice in his 4 years. Tice never won a division title. Childress has 2 in a row, something no Vikings coach has done since Bud Grant. Tice’s players were constantly getting in trouble off the field. Childress’ players do not. Tice’s $100,000 in fines to the NFL were the all time record before the Belichick fine. Your comment sucks, because it has absolutely no basis in reality.

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

I’m an eternal optimist, so hear me out! Hear me, I say!

- We’re 0-2. It’s not great, but it’s just 0-2. Win next week, gain a little momentum heading into the bye, and who knows?
-
Our offense didn’t click into gear ‘til Week 4 last year. But last year we opened with Cleveland and Detroit, instead of the defending Super Bowl champions and an underrated Miami team. We had a bit of extra time to work out the kinks.
— Our defense has allowed 28 points in two weeks. That’s really, really good by any standard.
- Two words: Adrian Peterson.
-
A few more words. Last season, Brett Favre got us to within a snap of a Super Bowl berth. I know he hasn’t looked great so far this year…but he hadn’t looked great after two games last year, either—we just happened to get two easy opponents and beat them both handily. Favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. He’ll come good.
— Again, it’s just 0-2.

Calgary out.

by NWOntario on Sep 19, 2010 4:13 PM CDT reply actions

Last year was different......

we “clicked into gear” because we had the pieces in place. I don’t see that now. Don’t get me wrong, we have players who can produce, but, we can afford ZERO mistakes right now, from playcalling, turnovers, field position, dropped passes, red zone efficiency, and on and on. Big playmakers, other than AP, are not there right now.
Yes, 28 points surrendered is outstanding on its face, but that is a difficult pace to maintain.
This team is in serious search for an identity, and some swagger. Let’s hope the Lions provide the tonic we need before the break.
I try to be an optimist, but, remember what the definition of an optimist is———someone who doesn’t have all the facts.

^^THIS ...

You guys played really tough… With your defensive front 7 and solid offensive line, it really isn’t going to take much to get you to the playoffs(see the NY Jets).

Cameron Wake has been going against Jake Long in practice and regularly beats him, so don’t get down on your line for letting him get to Favre(the guy is a freak).

You live by Favre, you die by Favre. The guy is a gunslinger and when he puts the ball in the air and the most talented people in the area are by far the defense things are going to go badly for you. That Vontae pick wasn’t luck, that guy is quickly becoming an elite CB.

When Rice comes back you guys will be just fine… um …. deadly.. I really think if Peterson had gotten the ball more you guys would have won. In the end with 48 seconds on the clock, is there anyone you would rather have in there at QB than Favre? Really? Because I know that I was worried to the last second.

Yes, I admit I have CLS... which might actually be a good thing, I was positive we were going to win it all with Saban, then with Cam ... and even last season... I wasn't expecting much in 2008 though ... Hopefully its unfounded ... we will see....

by Jason Scott_90 on Sep 19, 2010 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I have to agree..,.

Favre will be better when he has some better receivers to throw to. He’s trying to do too much right now. I think he is frustrated. I know I am.
Look at Tennessee last year. They started out 0-6 and got totally embarrassed in NE. Came back and almost made the playoffs. It hasn’t gotten that bad here yet. I don’t think the Bears will keep playing as good as they have., So, it will probably be just the Packers that we have to worry about. They have had a decent team and a cupcake to play so far. There schedule will get harder and they will come back to the pack.
Chins up folks. Things will get better.

Definitely tired of watching F4vre's smiling face

on the sideline whilst we’re losing and without regard for his numerous turnovers. Oh well, he just loves the game so I guess he always wins…
