Stop the Madness!
Stick with me...I've got a lot on my mind today and it's cluttering my thought process:
What went wrong today against the Dolphins? Our “average” receivers could not get open and our old quarterback could not get the ball to them (when he threw the ball and didn’t hold it too long). It is obvious that Favre’s timing with the receivers is about three weeks behind schedule…how long did he hold out?
Why is that the Coach’s fault? Four years ago he drafts Tarvaris Jackson, a reach in every other draft camp. Why does he draft Jackson? Because he sees himself as a genius quarterback maker (giving himself credit for Donovon McNabb’s success). And, when it is apparent to everyone in football, pros and fans alike, that Jackson’s impressive athletic ability does not translate to starting QB skills, the Viking spend 5 million on Sage Rosenfels.
How many starts did Rosenfels get? None. So what do we do? We trade him, along with Reynaud, for future draft picks.
Going back a few years, Childress should have let Gus Frerotte run the team, instead of throwing Jackson out there as a rookie to fail. Back then, Pat Williams was a force and #26 hadn’t been injured yet. A commitment to Frerotte may have paid off, but Coach Childress couldn’t help himself, he had to prove that he had not made a mistake in drafting Tarvaris Jackson.
Cut to early 2009, and we get Sage Rosenfels, the 5th rated passer in the NFL the previous year for a team with a terrible history and no offensive line, the Houston Texans. Does Brad Childress commit to Sage? No Sir, he does not. He goes out and gets every true Viking Fan’s mortal enemy, Brett favray. Okay, that turned out pretty damn good last year (and after he retires, I’ll go back to hating him with a passion).
Who got all the snaps when Brett wasn’t playing? Yup, Tarvaris Jackson. So, both years Brett holds out, [On that: why doesn't the "Coach" just announce that Brett can miss most of Training camp instead of making a mockery of the Vikings coaching staff (something we’re all too familiar with after Mike Tice and Les Steckel)].
Stick with me, I’ll sum up here to make my point, but I’m venting for my mental health.
My points: 1) If Brad Childress was not wrongly convinced of his own genius, he would have stuck with any one of the quarterbacks on this team that knew how to read a defense before they got drafted; 2) We would not be in the position of wooing Lord Favre onto a team that he is clearly ambivalent about playing for (maybe his considerable talent will surface before too long and salvage this season, and as much as I hate that Southern Wisconsonite, no one will be happier than me); 3) Wouldn’t it be nicer if Favre had a role like Mark Brunell in New York, mentoring a QB that the coach is committed to, rather than playing himself into game shape at the expense of Percy Harvin and about a million Vikings fans? and lastly; 4) Coach Childress is still in over his head and he has been since he got to Winter Park, and his progress mirrors that of his protege, Tarvaris Jackson.
Mr. Wilf; Bill Cowher, and Chuckie are out there, Mike Shanahan was. Let’s cut our losses, go get a coach with ability, and give your legion of fans what they deserve and have long suffered for: a dynasty team like we had under Coach Bud Grant…except this time let’s win it all!!!

I'm repetitive!
I did make this comment…but it was my first ever and then I discovered I could start my own thread…
It took Cowher 15 years to win a SB in Pitt
Its not a lock that he will do anything any quicker in Minny.

Pride
My blog was not intended to detract from anyone’s pride in the Vikings; quite the contrary. It is because I am such a passionate fan, and have been for forty-two years, that I am qualified to make these critical comments. I cannot understand how you could be content with the decisions that Coach Childress makes. I would be less critical if he, at least, instilled passion or loyalty in his players. He doesn’t. He’s mediocre on every level. Cowher’s Steelers played with passion; Shanahan got the most out of his players even though they did not love him.
The season is over and it is not lost, but the essential weaknesses persist. I am left to do nothing but hope that the players overcome them because I have no faith that Coach will identify them, and without admitting them how can we correct them?
You must have been under a very large rock for the last year or so
Or did you not like the decision to bring in Favre last year either?

Packer fan
Of course I did not want Favre last year…he’s a Green Bay Packer. Like I said in my initial post, that transaction turned out pretty well last year despite his late arrival. I would have preferred we went with Sage Rosenfels after giving up a 4th rd draft pick to get him…we’ll never know if that would have worked out, but if it did we had a quarterback for ten years. Where are we now? Exactly where we were then…hoping Tarvaris turns the corner, limping through the season with an old QB (two years ago it was Frerotte/Brad Johsnon), and looking to draft a QB. We have sold a lot of jerseys with #4 on them though.
