No point in watching the 2010 NFL Season

From the NFC standpoint at least. because apparently no other team in NFC is better then the almighty Green Bay Packers.

ill admit that Green bay is a great team and will probably  make the playoffs or win this division but this is ridiculous!

I don’t understand why that isn’t possible? I dunno, they peak late? Or maybe that Vikings stack up well against them and sweep series, but Packers stack up better against everyone else & someone else knocks out Vikings in playoffs so they don’t have to play them again? NY giants won the superbowl couple years back without winning their division either.

by puddnhead on Sep 3, 2010 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, that’s what I believe (hope) too. I’m on record as expecting a 3-3 start +/1 1 game, in fact.

But maybe Kirwin looks at it another way, that was my point.

Picking the Packers for limp-brained people

The sports columnists who get paid to write all pick the Packers every year, because the Packers are one of the top teams in terms of numbers of fans. They sell more newspapers and magazines and get more hits on their web sites.

Journalists do not know jack *#@&. If you know what I mean. They just write what people want to hear and if a few facts end up in their articles, great. Otherwise, who cares. The only thing they care about is their paycheck. No amount of BS is too great if it helps them get paid.

Well I know Brandt, Brooks, and Lombardi worked for NFL teams

I think Kirwain too. They were all either scouts (Brooks) or GM’s (Brandt and Lombardi). So yeah, they made a living scouting talent and building teams. What do they know?

by PackApologist on Sep 3, 2010 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

They also make a living as yellow journalist.

I’m not saying they don’t know their business. I just have been in sales (got out quick) and realize it’s easier selling something when everyone wants to buy it. Cowboys, Packers are big tickets. I’m sure they are praying Singletary does a good job in San Fran to bring that giant market back to the fore front.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Sep 3, 2010 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

perhaps

But they aren’t banging on the Giants or Jets quite as much. There isn’t lots of love for the Bears.

I get your point, I really do, but right now many of the people around this site are walking that fine line between the very valid Rodney Dangerfield impression and moving towards the annoying and pathetic Jan Brady routine.

by PackApologist on Sep 3, 2010 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

We’re Vikings fans admiting the Pack might be better them is a pretty bitter pill so I wouldn’t expect many of us to enjoy swallowing it. Me included.

by Grime on Sep 3, 2010 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Half of it is admitting it

Seriously though, I will be the first to give the Vikings fans some credence to feeling of being left behind as well. I don’t know if it’s the whole being a smaller market or smaller national fan base though. I think that the talking heads are always trying to find the new sexy storyline this time of year.

The Vikings were a vogue pick a couple years ago (typically you heard they were a SB contender if they got a QB). There was a mixed bag of predictions for them with Farve (with those that weren’t picking them questioning if Farve could hold up or fit in). Now this year it’s old news. Sad, but that’s a reality of a 24 hour news cycle, which plagues the media across the board – not just the NFL or sports.

Looks like we are adding another title for titletown

Well now just can’t wait to get the games over with

by the yooper on Sep 3, 2010 7:05 AM CDT reply actions

I think it is actually a tough call between the Vikings & Packers

I mean if I am doing a prediction I would be hard pressed to pick the Vikings over the Packers RIGHT NOW.

When you consider the injuries we have in the secondary and at the WR position to start the year and that the backups are Walker & Payne and Sherels & Wright, then you really have to think hard about a prediction.

And as much as I hate to type this, Rodgers looks like the real deal and he is definitely one of the top 3 pre-season MVP candidates IMO. There offense is already firing on all cylinders while ours is still trying to find it’s stride. Favre deserves to miss camp if he wants but a sputtering offense to start the year is a probable byproduct.

I think the Viking start slowly this year. If they fall behind in the standings it could be hard to catch GB for the division. But all they need is a invitation to the dance. A playoff berth.

It is not too far fetched for people (writers) to pick the Packers.

I could care less really and do not get upset by this. It is funny that some get offended and hate to read that another team is thought of as better. I know fans want to read positive things and feel good about their team during the year.

But feeling good got nothing to do with it.

Getting some offensive linemen that can block would go a long way towards feeling happy.

I would trade for Marcus McNeil or Jared Gaither right now.
I would trade for Logan Mankins right now.
I would trade Sage to Pittsburgh for Justin Hartwig right now.

The Vikings need to get the offensive line in order and then they can hand it off to the best player in the league and see him be able to get to the second level more often than not. 2000 yards is what I am talking about.

That should be the goal. If Tennessee can do it and have the WRs they have then the Vikings can do it.

When you have AP on your team you get some blockers that can block and let the boy run especially when you have a couple of issues at the WR spot.

But that is just me.

by jethrophet on Sep 3, 2010 7:39 AM CDT up reply actions

I think you are 100% correct

I would be more irritated if the Vikings hadn’t come down with the injury bug so hard before we even started playing. You can’t look at a team that is losing their two best recievers (rice and harvin) and expect them to play at the same level as they did. Also, our offensive line is literally offensive, the loss of Sully has torn a hole in it that we just can’t seem to patch. If we wanted to be serious about this I simply cannot see why the FO didn’t pick up help for it in the off season. No one can tell me that AD is slacking so it has to be the line. Especially as people stopped stacking the box last because of Favre.

No I can’t blame them for making these calls. I see the Vikings being a 4-4 team coming out of the first eight weeks. Then winning the rest out as all of our talent comes back to play. The good news is a lot of our talent will still be fairly fresh for the play offs. I just hope Favre doesn’t ahve an injury as that would pretty much write us off period.

Selectivity is the theory where

an item of importance is only deemed important based on where the viewer of the item is located. Thus if you are sitting on a beach and see a giant rock it’s selective importance to you is weak. Preseason means a few things.

It means that if Rodgers is injured, maybe Flynn won’t be their savior after all.

I guess the wins don’t really matter, but in the last couple of years Kansas City’s preseason record was a precursor of things to come. On the flip side Detroit won all their preseason games last year. Go figure.

It has proved one thing. Joe Webb can play football.

First off- I agree with MarkSP's assesment

Media is just building up interest in the Minnesota-GB game. They have the right to look at our situation and be discouraged.

But I am not giving up on our O-Line until I see the O-Line work together w/o injury.
We have not seen it. Yes, we have a rough start to the season. We play some freat QB’s.

But they have to face the toughest D-Line in football. Good luck with that.

by lifelongvike on Sep 3, 2010 9:01 AM CDT reply actions

I hope that we can see the line play together too

But they were “hurt” last year (not like other teams did not have guys banged up either though) and some guys were young.

Now they are hurting this year at the center spot and he was barely average in his first year last year.

I can hope but the realist side of me says our line is what it is and it ain’t getting any better. In fact it is getting older in 3 spots.

Right now, there are two YOUNG All Pro offensive linemen that are holding out and there could be a POSSIBILITY to get them.

When that occurs, you do not sit on your hands and wait until they become free agents IMHO.

I would trade McKinnie and our 2nd next year for McNeil.

I would try and trade one of our defensive linemen, Herrera, and a 3rd to New England for Mankins.

I would trade a QB (Sage or TJack) and Cooper to Pittsburgh for Justin Hartwig.

That would give us 3 All Pro linemen with DeGeare, Cook, & Sullivan as the backups.

Yeah it would mean they could not get a QB early in the draft next year.

But they could still trade Edwards this year for at least a 2nd or maybe even a 1st next year to offset the above lost draft picks.

The defensive line is deep and there is no guarantee they are going to pay Edwards.

I left that for last. :)

I think that while adding a WR would be nice, getting the line shored up would be the best thing to do in order to go back to running the ball more. And to top it off, the line would be considerably younger with the only guy over 30 being the HOFer Hutchinson.

Call me crazy but that is what I would do first before anything else.

by MarkSP18 on Sep 3, 2010 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Honestly I know this isn't a capped year but how would you pay them next year

When you have AD, Greenway and Rice all looking for paychecks as well?

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Sep 3, 2010 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

You pay these guys this year

McNeil has a tender that is 600K. Due to the 30% rule his salary cannot be more than 30% over that during any year of a contract he signs. So I would give him a two year deal for about 12 mil with about 10.5 as a bonus. In two years they can address his contract again. Plus if McKinnie was gone you are only talking about 1.5 mil more than what McKinnie made.

Mankins would be the guy who costs some money. He wants to be paid like Jahri Evans which was 7 years at 56.7 mil (8.1 per year). I would offer him a 3 year 24.3 mil deal with a bonus of 17 mil and annual salaries of 1.8 mil, 2.4 mil, & 3.1 mil. He was tendered at 110% of his 2009 salary which was 1.4 mil.

Rice will be cheaper next year because he got hurt again. He will get about 6 or 7 mil per year and they probably could do an inflated deal of 5 years for 35 mil with the last two being most likely renegotiable.

Greenway will have to get paid in the average of the top 10 LBs and of course AP will need to have the brinks truck backed up. But Favre will be gone next year which is 13 mil (plus whatever else they are throwing in this year but I am only counting the 13 mil) and they could also lose some higher priced guys like PWill (4 mil), Madieu (5.4 mil in 2011), Kleinsasser (3 mil), and maybe Farwell (1.5 mil) and some other guys.

They should have no problem adding these guys and still signing the other guys. After 2011 Berrian’s salary jumps to 6.9 mil and by then it will be time to pay Harvin.

There is money coming off of the books so they should be able to do it as long as Wilf has the cash flow and the FO is willing to give up the draft picks.

But these are All Pros and would be worth it since draft picks are not guaranteed.

Be thankful I am not the GM. :)

He is an upgrade over Cooper and probably Sullivan for the next year at least

And he is a veteran with experience at recognizing defenses.

True

But he is still better than what we have at center.

I think he can come in and play until Sully is fully healthy.

by MarkSP18 on Sep 3, 2010 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

It might be a little late for him to become our interim starter.

Pittsburgh runs a man-blocking scheme rather than the zone and if we got Hartwig immediately he’d get two practices in before facing NO. I don’t disagree that he’s better than what we got now but I think any O-lineman we pick up now will be for depth only. Even if we got somebody great like Mankins he’d probably have to spend a game or two on the bench learning our protections and schemes.

I’M MAD AS HELL AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE.

What amazes me is so many of these boobs get paid to chime in. Its litterally their opinions, & nothing else. Are you trying to tell me that you can just overlook that stink that the Peckers call a defense. BUT…the Vikings injuries & their tough schedule (wich is virutally exactly the same as GB’s) means they wont win the division? Geez.

Another irritating point is how many of these morons did not even have the Vikings making the playoffs. Are you kidding me? (playoffs!!!? playoffs!!!!)

Top it off with GB winning the whole shooting match. Sure. That defense is going to lead them to a Superbowl title. I dont see it. Note that I do believe their offense is downright scary, & though I hate the hairy goof, Rodgers is looking great.

…and Grime has it right as well. This is all about the marketing & the money. Why the HELL else would they pit the Vikes against the Aints in New Orleans, on Thursday, to start the season? Ratings. Cash. Cha’ching.

Drew will have a better year . He as a better run game . Their Defense allows quick scores that give Drew the ball even more .

The increased pass run with all the Central foes will make Rodgers year tough . He will spend time this year dealing with injuries . I do agree that Statistically he will look huge . But he hasn’t developed into a seasoned vet that can disect defenses . He has a high risk style of going deep or getting planted . One guy goes down on that OL and they are doomed . Bulaga has been destroyed by McCarthy . How can he have an ounce of confidence left . He was shot down at two spots . The second to a guy every Pack fan wantd run out of town in Colledge . All of a sudden . Pack fans scream why ? silently . Then have begun to start pumping the guy like he’s a solid performer . I will love to see their cuts after another crazy draft . Name one potential probowler from their recent draft class . Come on be an idiot and name a third rder or less . As Pack fans pretend to laugh at our top choices . Their rookies forced into the lineup will be on IR by week three .
Patrick Willis will have a great year for the same reason as last year . A sputtering Offense .
Suh has a thankless job . I see Cox at Denver giving Thomas a run .

If Aaron wants MVP . First he must beat Brett . On the scoreboard . Not happening . Then the voting needs to end before a playoff game . He will lose that too .
These Clowns have SD without their LT Vs. DAL/49ers That is a sad year . I guess SD can lose 30 guys and still be a favorite . Like Aaron they have a history of losing in th playoffs .

seeing green

It is funny to me how the commentators seem to forget that Green Bay, even armed with the talented and dishy Aaron Rodgers got swept by the Vikings last year. The Vikings, and not the much touted Packers, have been the NFC North champions for the last two years, and in 2008 they even managed to win the North without Favre.

While it is entirely true that the Green Bay Packers are a talented team, the Minnesota Vikings aren’t without talent either. I know I’m completely biased toward the Vikings, but that doesn’t make me wrong. Didn’t they have more Pro Bowl players last year than Green Bay did? The Vikings may not have a clear vision of what they will do when Brett Favre really, truly, and finally retires, but as for this year, they are poised to kick a little ass—some of it clad in green and gold.

After the NFC championship game the Vikings were pretty beat up so I suppose it makes sense that they weren’t up for the game. That on Sept 9 my mother would have been 65. She and dad were diehards like me. I know she’ll be cheering for them in the big sky, and dad will too.

Im starting to want a rematch of the 2oo9 NFC Championship game

Every single one pick the Packers to go to the Superbowl? Really? Everyone.. Not One EVERYONE! Even some analysts go against what everybody, and maybe even themselves think and select differently, but NO! Everyone picks the Packers…

Oh this should be posted On the D-Lines Lockers.

☠★☪My dream, is to see the Minnesota Vi♛s win a superbowl. USA- the land were dreams come true. ☀ ツ This is our ۩۩house۩

old saying

I can’t help think that the analysts are going to have to revise their opinions as the season wears on. Reminds me of that saying, “Assumptions are the mother of all fuck ups.”

The English language was carefully, carefully cobbled together by three blind dudes and a German dictionary.

Well at least they didn't totally forget about us.

At least they have us as a WC.
I guess we’ll have to prove our worth on the field.
