Stock Market Report, Week 2
When I wrote that piece on 0-1 and 0-2 starts, I honestly never expected the Vikings to be 0-2. This isn't meant to be disrespectful to the Dolphins. They're a good team, but I thought the Vikings were better. When you add in the fact that it was the home opener and Brett Favre (which is German for 'Interception', by the way) had a week and a half to get on the same page as the receivers, it just seemed like a given that the Vikes would come away with a win. This was as routine as routine could be, like a blimp coming in to land. What could possibly go wrong?
Oh, the humanity. And the Stock Market Report. After the jump.
Blue Chip Stocks:
Adrian Peterson, RB. One of two bright spots on the offensive side of the ball so far in this young season is Peterson. He ran like a man possessed on Sunday, but couldn't get into the end zone when he absolutely had to. Still, Peterson has been the only reliable, consistent weapon in the VIkings aresenal to this point. There are issues with the concept we like to call in the blogosphere 'The Forward Pass', but Peterson has been the reason the Vikings have been in a position to win the game, at least from an offensive perspective.
Defense. Lito Sheppard gave up the long pass to Brandon Marshall on the first play of the game, but did okay for the rest of the game, including a nice pass break up late when the defense needed to make a stop. The front four had noticeably more pressure on Chad Henne than they did on Drew Brees last week, and they got two big turnovers when they really needed to get one. They also stopped Miami late in the game and put the offense in position to win, giving them time and field position. Now, if they can just throw 14 shutouts, we're going to the playoffs, baby!!
Visanthe Shiancoe, TE. So far, Shiancoe has 10 catches for 162 yards in two games. The top four wide receivers on the Vikings (which is akin to saying the four best Barry Manilow songs are...) have 13 catches for 129 yards. And when Favre needed to make a throw to get a first down at the end of the game? He looked towards Shiancoe. Granted, the throw was five feet behind the Big Fella, but Brett's heart was in the right place, if not his accuracy.
Sound Investments:
Hi, Glenn Beck here. You know, with the apocalypse of an 0-2 start staring you Viking fans square in the face like a rabid Pit Bull, you need to think about your future. Did you know that Barack Obama passed a law that makes it ILLEGAL for Brett Favre to throw a touchdown pass, and is secretly appointing members of the Green Bay Packers into his administration? DID YOU? It's just a matter of time before the Football Apocalypse hits, and YOU NEED GOLD. Gold never drops in value, IT ONLY GOES UP. Get my brochure from Goldline, because when the Apocalypse hits next week after the Detroit loss, you'll need to find shelter in a storm. And gold it is, because there isn't anyone on your team that you can look to and say hey, that guy's a sound investment right there.
Junk Bonds:
Any Running Back Not Named Adrian Peterson: I had this crazy theory during the past off-season. I thought...just stay with me here...that if the worst thing you lost from your offense was the backup running back, you were in good shape. Crazy, right? What kind of idiot thinks that? I understood the contribution that Chester Taylor made, but I really thought that someone would step up and fill the vacuum. I didn't even think it was a vacuum, but more of a lingering question that would be answered as training camp went on. Yeah, not so much. But I also have to ask, would Chester Taylor have made the difference in these two games? I can't say for certain that he would've, but would he have more than three catches for 16 yards, like Albert Young and Toby Gerhart combined? Yeah, I think so. And I didn't like the trade with Detroit on draft day to give them Minnesota's first round pick for a chance to drop down and get Gerhart, although I liked the Gerhart pick, and I still do. But the Lions used that pick to draft Jahvid Best. Sigh...
Every Wide Receiver On The Roster: You guys all suck right now. You know it, we know it. Get better. Now. What happened to the explosiveness from Percy Harvin? Last year, every time he touched the ball, I thought he had a 50-50 chance to house it. Now, he can't even get open, and his kickoff returns are average. I also thought Bernard Berrian would be better. And he would be better, if his hands weren't shoved up his ass as he ran his pass patterns. And for the love of Odin, just start Greg Camarillo already. He can't be any worse than what's out there.
Oh, and I now fully support trading for Vincent Jackson. Two faced? Yes. Hypocritical? Sure. But screw you guys for judging me.
Brett Favre: You suck right now. You know it, we know it. Get better. Now. Get Satan on the phone and extend that deal you made with him for one more season, stick some pins in your Ted Thompson voodoo doll, slap somebody on the ass and run away laughing, I don't care. But you look like you just don't care and are going through the motions. Find something to motivate you. I don't care what it is, but find it. Maybe Zygi will give you another $7 million if you ask really nice.
Buy/Sell:
Buy: The offensive line play. They gave Favre enough time and opened some very good running lanes for Adrian Peterson. The line looks more and more like the 2008 version and not the substandard 2009 version. Now, if we could only find the 2009 passing offense, and not the 2008 version.
Sell: Every punt returner on the roster. Bernard Berrian, apparently, is allergic to the football as a wide receiver and a punt returner. Which really sucks, since he's paid handsomely to get a lot of arm tattoos hold on to the football. Greg Camarillo had a couple of decent returns, but he also had a fumble that could have been even more disastrous than Sunday already was. Why, exactly, was Darius Reynaud traded again? What's that? For no discernible reason? Oh, okay. Good to know.
Buy: Jim Kleinsasser's catch. He didn't catch the ball so much as his hands swallowed the football. Sauce, football safely secured, then performed an atomic elbow on Planet Earth, hooked the leg, and got the three count for the most exciting finish to a WWE match EVAH, winning the Intercontinental Belt in the process. Other than AP's Edwin Moses impersonation, it was the play I cheered the loudest.
Sell: The 4th and 1 stuff on the goal line by Miami. That sucked. Hat's off to Karlos Dansby, though. Nice play. Bastard.
Sell: The two goal line interceptions by Bad Brett. Those sucked. One wasn't his fault, that was more on Percy Harvin and his imitation of SuckySuck the Runaway Juggling Circus Clown, although it was a crappy throw. The other one was a WHATTHEHELLWEREYOUDOING? moment if ever there was one. Terrible, terrible throw.
Buy: The late fourth quarter defensive stop. The Vikes defense needed to get off the field and give the offense enough time on the clock to drive down and win the game. The defense lived up to their end of the bargain. Again. The offense sucked. Again.
Sell: The decision not to go for the field goal on the opening drive. With the way the offense has been struggling, I think they needed to get the points on the board.
Sell: The run defense for about a quarter and a half. For awhile it looked like the Manson Family vs. the Tate/LaBiancas (too inappropriate?). The good guys were just getting gashed and couldn't stop the Dolphins run game. Tony Sparano has the Wildcat perfected, and the Dolphins ran wild against a normally stout run defense.
Well, Viking fans, Sunday was a tough pill to swallow. 1-1 would've looked a lot better than 0-2, but I don't even want to contemplate what happens if the Vikes lose at home to the Lions next week and end up at 0-3.

nice. I thought he’d have more games like this last year…couldn’t believe how great he played. This year he’s come back down to earth, now we have to see if he can turn it around. I am sure he’ll kick it into high gear for the Lions…they couldn’t come at a better time. Though they look much improved this year.
That's the scary part
I predicted the Lions being about 9-7 this year, some kinda laughed. Yeah, they might be 0-2, should be 1-1 and damn near stuck it to the Eagles. I hope no one’s laughing now and taking them a little seriously at the moment.

meh
Our loses combined are a total of a 9 point deficit. It’s not like we couldn’t of been 1-1 either, or 2-0, if our Offense just plays average instead of crappy.

gosh...
Please, stop interjecting logic into the stock market report. Vikings fans have been addicted to angst for half a century now, and many still long to leap from high windows on Wall Street.
As they say in Fort Worth, how ’bout ’em Cowboys?
lol yeah that is a bright spot in my other wise dreary Football life...

Thanks!
you took the burn out of the loss. The Harvin “clown” desicription has me still laughing! That int. that was thrown to Harvin was quite a moronic play. WTF? I dont get it. Only the Vikings can do something that inept.
Also, the Reynaud statement…thank you. Couldnt have said it better. As I watch the sucky play by our KO & Punt return guys I long for the efficiency of Reynaud. Gee…glad he went to an out of conference team though…what? Oh…wait. Sorry.
Yeah…this game sucked out loud. Thanks for the laughs Ted. This stock market thing is making it bareable.
Great write up over a greek tragedy.
0-2. wow.

Yeah Right
Blame Brett Farve … Who does the man have to throw to … Try getting a deep threat that can catch the ball .. Bernard sucks … The only guys catching the ball is Greg Lewis (wow) and Shancoe ..

I thought he makes receivers better?

The only receiver Favre has different from last year is Camarillo instead of Rice.
Bernard… isn’t great, I’ll grant that, but for him, Greg Lewis, and Percy Harvin to all fall off?
Am I the only one that seems to remember that Brett didn’t look good for the first few weeks of last year? And to expect him to come out smelling fresh with two weeks of practice is ludicrous. Hopefully he’ll have it together next week. If not, well, at least there’s a bye week next for him to practice more.

Don’t reveal that wiley milers capitalize on making their competitors overconfident, then kill them with the nagging doubt they that should have had rearview mirrors installed as they experience footsteps coming down the stretch. The Giants have won the Super Bowl from the wild card position twice, and who can ever forget the playoff at Lambeau where Reverend Randy “Moon” Moss preaches to the incredulous multitude to read the @#$%*#$ scoreboard.
I saw
The Harvin interceptoin from where I was sitting in the endzone stands. Man, it looked like a freak-play. I nearly figured it would have been an incomplete.
I am in ht esame boat as you with VJ
I was totally against a trade but now I will give my left nut for a WR that can catch the ball.
Great rite up Love the Glenn Beck Ad.

Two losses with a combined deficit of 9.
The little things matter.
We let go of 3 points in the beginning of this game, because we’re the MF’in Vikings? This is still football. The game of inches. Take your points, and swallow your pride. We take those 3 points, and the end of the game is a completely different gameplan. It’s get within FG range and kill it for a 2 points lead. But hey, we’re the MF’’in Vikings.
All in all, our Defense is doing too well to be falling to these offenses. The Dolphins put up 7 Offensive points early on. After that, nothing.
This falls square on our offense. This falls squarely on everyone who isn’t named AP or Shiancoe.
If we had taken the field goal...
and lost by a few points, I am sure a lot of us would say the opposite.
That was a 50-50 decision.
What was not a 50-50 decision: Reynaud, Taylor and not playing Camarillo. Why did we give up Benny Sapp. To get some practice with Camy? Also, we gave up Jahvid Best? Could we have drafted him and opted for Toby instead?
Skol Vikings
If I remember correctly
If we pick Jahvid Best we would probably have missed out on Chris Cook. And how much time on the field does Best get with AP playing the way he is. But I am with you on the field goal—it was 50-50 at the time, but 100-0 against in hindsight.

Go Vikes!
50-50?
It was 4 & 2, not 4th & an inch.
It’s the first quarter. It’s the first drive of the game.
Take the points, and stop trying to look like Sean Payton.
I believe the NFL stats are something like:
4 and 1
60% success
4 and 2
40%
Read about it in a magazine while getting oil change in my car. Someone know what I am talking about?
You bring up Sean Payton?? That is my problem with Chilly. He is too much on ‘in the box’ coach unlike Payton who won the SB for his team (yeah, luck too) but luck favors the brave.

This is probably the best
post I’ve ever read on DN. Well done.
sheppard also looked like a chump on that touchdown, but I agree that our d-backs became invisible the rest of the game, which is always a good thing in the nfl—that is, 90% of the times you hear a d-back’s name it is because he did something wrong.
Good stuff Ted
Losing definitely brings the best out of us when it comes to sarcasm and self-deprecating humor, and your post was no different. If we can’t have fun watching the games, at least we can have fun laughing at the wreckage.

If we get Vincent Jackson and Sidney Rice returns, the offense will score big, let’s just hope we can win enough games now so as to have a wild card chance later
Love the Glenn Beck impersonation. Almost didn’t come here because I didn’t want to deal with the drama, but I knew you would have something funny be insightful & biting to say. Check.
I had this crazy theory during the past off-season. I thought…just stay with me here…that if the worst thing you lost from your offense was the backup running back, you were in good shape. Thank you for acknowledging (however belatedly) what I’ve been saying all offseason, citing lots of stuff like the fact that we had one of the best 3rd down conversion rates in the NFL last year, how important that was, and Chester was the reason. And that more recently (the last month) I’ve been saying the even the loss of Sydney may not have as much impact as the loss of Chester. No offense, but I cringe whenever someone calls Chester “our backup running back” of last year. He really, really was much more than that, and deserves to be recognized for it, however belatedly.
TED . You shouldn't pucker so much when you tell us we suck ????
First . Peterson , TE and the secondary both slipped all day . Not in value . But on the newest Surface that the Dome put in .
Under sound . Brett will have to score next week as DET does have some Offense . The second half will tell more than the first .
Junk . You are so far off . Gerhart stood next to Brett all thru warm ups . And Brett went to him in the air early . On runs Gerhart looked huge and hit his holes hard . WR’s will need to run better routes . But they are far from junk .
Brett . He will be aided by the change of the other teams in the NFL . IR , trades , retirements , disputes will all assist the Viking QB in his path to redemption .
You want to buy an O-line that was 20% in the redzone ?
You want to sell a PR that will most likely get traded ?
You want to buy a TE catch that could have but didn’t score . And may have sealed the second loss ?
Once again sell when you should have traded for the three points at Home . Madden 101 ??
1/2 sell . Both WRs were not in their routes ?
You buy a DEfense that still can’t get a pick ? Or consistently pressure the QB .
I’ll combine your last two sells as you were babbling . We give up one TD after a big play to set it up early . Then shut out their Offense with what 5 catches against our weak link the DBs . And you say we were gashed . CHI gave up 600 yrds of Offense . That’s gashed . And they win ?
We could start 0-6 and win this conference . The Bears and Pack are the only undefeated teams left on our schedule this year . That is great optimism . Especially since we beat both last year as the Bears needed luck and over time as we crushed GB 34-7 . I see a lot of reasons to expect success . Our two losses were as we drove to win at the end of both games . A reason to still feel competitive . With or without the Offense clicking !!
O-line 20% in the endzone
So what. They gave Brett time and a chance to score. They opened holes in the running game. They do not complete passes to the WRs, that is what didn’t work, that is on Favre and the WRs.
The O-line played well.
Favre: It's rare to ever see a QB be so indecisive, waffle...
It's also unlikely to have one start 19 consecutive seasons.
The wonderful miracles of hindsight
Yes, the Chillster should have ruled with an iron fist and told all those self-appointed coaches in the stands that he’s the guy making seven figures doing this, and he doesn’t care what they think, he has absolutely no confidence in AD, and Brett Favre is calling all the shots, so he wants his pal Ryan to get all the glory.
Eyes forward. That’s where the Super Bowl is. George Washington was beat to hell the entire American Revolution until one day it was Cornwallis who woke up and found himself checkmated. Where did all those French ships come from? Way to go, Ben.
About the new surface in the dome...
Did not know that or would have been extra vigilant about us slipping and them slipping. Did they slip much?

Harvin
Percy Harvin is young and talented, but there is no substitute for training and conditioning. Lying in a dark room hoping to die because he’s laid low with a crippling migraine may test his patience and his spirits, but it does fuck-all for his overall conditioning. I think that lack of practice and conditioning is having an effect on his durability (bruised hip) and skill. He may be playing catch-up part of the season for missing the preseason.
Life being what it is, one dreams of revenge.

Two games means jack
We’re just seeing the difference between the ’09 Browns/Lions and the ’10 Saints/Dolphins. Every year there are 2-0 and 3-0 or better teams that fail to make the post-season, and every year there are 0-2 or 0-3 teams that climb back into contention. We definitely have issues to work out, but I actually like our chances when we take our lumps early in the season. Hopefully we can get all this fail out of the way before it really is too late. If we do, we can still lift the trophy. If not, well then maybe we at least get a good pick out of the mess.
On the brightside
Complete disasters can sometimes be cathartic, maybe Childress will get canned! Oh right, he just got a 3 year extension.

This is one of the best writes I may have ever read....
Love the humor!!!
Guys it was one helluva game. Favre made some mistakes, we immediately gave the ball back after 2 of them… The first half it looked like Miami might run away with it, the second half it looked like you would crush our soul with a huge comeback (I think Peterson is still gaining yards against our D as I write this)
I think by the end of the 3rd quarter I had decided it would come down to the last play of the game… and fate shined on our side of the field this Sunday.
You guys are a better team than your record shows. The Old man needs some WD-40 to get those joints running smoothly, Rice Out, and Harvin banged up severely changes your offense…. If you had been full strength, I can’t say the ending would’ve been the same….and I’m feeling pretty lucky we played you when we did.
I wish you all the best in the rest of the season!
