Punch Up with Detroit at the Dome

On Sunday when the Minnesota Vikings beat the scrappy Detroit Lions 24 to 10 at Mall of America Field it was as if Vikings fans everywhere breathed a collective sigh of relief. Gone were the dire predictions of what happens to teams that start the season 0-3-and not a moment too soon. Honestly, if I had to listen to another rousing rendition of "They're Completely Screwed If They Start 0-3" statistics I would probably develop a twitch like Herbert Lom's character Inspector Dreyfus did in the Pink Panther movies every time bumbling detective Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers) made an appearance.

However, it looks as if statistics about how teams with an early bye-week perform will take its place so there's still hope that I will become a twitchy mess.

While it would be nice to see the Vikings play again this coming weekend so it wouldn't feel like a fluke or like the Vikings got lucky because the Lions still know how to sabotage their own success, that is not to be. Instead we're staring down a bye-week and won't see the Purple play again until they take on the New York Jets on the road.

Star-divide

I'm trying to be hopeful about it, but that's still eleven days away and my post-win good vibrations could wear off by then. More concerning, the Vikings' post-win good vibrations could wear off too-considering how long it took to get that winning feeling back, no one wants to see it disappear.

In a game that had moments of both amazingly brilliant plays (like Brett Favre's touchdown pass to Percy Harvin or Adrian Peterson's 80-yard touchdown run) and amazingly ugly flubs (the Vikings committed three turnovers and 12 penalties), one of the greatest moments of the team coming together didn't exactly involve an actual play. Nope, it was a fight between Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and Detroit quarterback Shaun Hill.

If you can believe it, Shaun Hill actually went after Jared Allen in the fight for the ball after a Brian Robison sack. Hill gets points for spirit, but not brains because Allen is big and crazy. It flashed me back to the time Lions offensive lineman Gosder Cherilus leveled his helmet into Jared Allen's knee back in 2008. Allen already had a third-degree shoulder separation and he came up from that hit to his knee hopping on his one good leg, swinging his one good arm, fully prepared to kick Cherilus's ass. If Ray Edwards hadn't gotten in Allen's grill and stopped him, he probably would have done it too. Allen is crazy, who picks a fight with him at all, let alone when he's healthy?

But Shaun Hill must have a good dose of the crazy himself because he came at Jared Allen, Allen refused to back down or take that, and in split seconds the field was swarming with Vikings and Lions players trying to either help embattled teammates or separate them. At one point Viking defensive back Eric Frampton was trying to pull Jared Allen away from half the Lions' team-a pretty funny thing to watch because Frampton is 5'11" 205lbs and Allen is 6'6" 270lbs. Really, it was like a six-year-old trying to take the Great Dane for a walk and it was just about that successful.

It's fairly likely that the league will mail out some fines this week, and they probably should, but that fight seemed like a much-needed tension-breaker for the Vikings. Even though the Vikings were leading by 14 points, they still seemed so tense and brittle that, regardless of the score, they didn't project a winning countenance. Considering the previous two games, it's possible that despite needing to win and having a lead, they didn't feel like winners.

However, stalking back to the sidelines full of righteous indignation, adrenaline, and relief only to be teased/congratulated by Brett Favre, well, it looked like the game stopped being about the Vikings' desperate need to prevent a slide to 0-3 and more about kicking some Detroit ass. It looked like football was fun again. Well, fun for the Vikings anyway.

After the bye-week when the Vikings get back to Winter Park and they prepare for their Monday night game against the New York Jets, let's hope that spirit is still with them. Or, we might get lucky and Mark Sanchez might try to throw a punch at Jared Allen in the first quarter. Hey, whatever it takes.

God Bless Peter Sellers!!!!!!

I still miss his talent, from Dr. Strangelove to of course, the beloved but inept Inspector!

I almost hope Sanchez does something stupid, or Rex Ryan say’s something stupid to fire us up. I also hope the extra week will bode well for our offense. Favre has been improving. Detroits game, only one pick I can call his fault. But otherwise, he was fired up. We did miss Shank. Kleinsasser looked good picking up the slack. Wow, few years ago never thought I would have said that! Glad to see Harvin getting back into the thick of things. While Hank Baskett, and I know some were hard on him, wasn’t fully on page, give him time. Berrian, well, not so sure he will be around once Rice get’s back, if he does. All Day was just that, back in full force and running all over the NFL once again! Overall, the Offense is slowly coming together.

Defense, well, not much to say other then been keeping us in games. Right now 5th overall, 8th against the rush, but sure to improve. And what’s this, 8th against the pass? Hoping we keep this one up for sure!!!!

Just wishing we still had Reynaud though.

I’m thinking we do take the Jets though. Might be close, but we take them, in their house, with Favre walking off with a smile of “Told ya so.”

Awesome job Skol Girl!

I don't know why they tried to remake the Pink Panther movies...

Because Peter Sellers was brilliant.

Considering what a lose cannon Rex Ryan can be, I think it is safe to bet he will say something in the range between irritating and inflammatory. Maybe the best would be if he said something about Favre because I think that would help the offense try to rally around our aged MVP.

The penalties are the most concerning to me because it just hands the other team field position. While the Vikings could still pull off a win against the Lions while running up 12 penalties, I’m not sure they would have the same luck with the Jets. It’s hard to know what the refs will decide to call, but let’s hope that they work on technique with Phil Loadholt so he isn’t as guilty of holding penalties after the bye.

What I still love to this day about this scene

from Dr. Strangelove, the guy playing the Soviet Ambassador was trying not to crack up!

Yes, Loadholt was an issue with the Lions. We did overcome those, but didn’t help. Right now, the whole entire Offense has been banged up or rusty minus Shank and Peterson, so will give Loadholt some slack, but not much. I do agree, with the bye, plenty of time to work with him. Plenty of time to work with all of them!!

Oh, by the eay, I waited and waited at the Elvis Chapel, but you never showed. I’m so crushed!!!! LOL j/k ;-)

Agreed...

… my solution: tape Loadholt’s fingers together. You can’t hold without fingers.

by HammeroftheGods on Oct 1, 2010 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

LOL Do you think the coaching staff would try it?

No...

… but then they may not have my problem-solving skills.

Seriously though, why not?

I suppose they all hold a little, so taped fingers would be a definite disadvantage. I guess you have to know how to hold a bit and not get called for it.

Loadholt doesn’t seem very “teachable” yet, however. If you can’t coach him up, tape him up.

Watched it several times today...

And still can’t believe that Shaun Hill decided to have a go at Jared Allen. True, Allen kind of tossed him aside trying to get to the ball, but decide to elevate the altercation from “business” to “personal” just seems like a dumb idea. Gutsy, but dumb. Especially when Allen has Ray Edwards (who’s training to be a heavy-weight boxer) watching his back.

Every year we silently root for the Lions . Kinda like hoping a poor family comes to save a poor kitty from the pound . Until they learn they still cost money for the shots !

Until the get to like this . The third game and they are showing unsportsman like frustration this early . I was hoping they could hold their composure at least until the 1st Green Bay game ended . It looks like back to the drawing board already .
I would say we match up well against the Jets Defensively . But we are not getting pressure from the four man front yet this year . Jared where have you gone ? Brett only needs one throwing TD to hit 500 . Rex will hate that . And Adrian needs 124 yards to hit 5000yards in 50 games . Rex would hate that even more . Special team will be key . They sucked last week as the two late INTs saved the win .
So if Detroit holds Green Bay to a three point game . Will that be a positive gauge to who the real King’s of the North still is ? Sounding like a school girl here . But . If Rice were 100% . What would ESPIN have as an excuse for their predictions . A rumor hits that Brett will retire and we drop to #2 in the North . They lose Grant and they didn’t even budge . As we get healthy we will maintain . Then after the Green Bay game . We will climb back on top . 13 straight games to the playoffs is a tough road . So the opposing IR lists will need to aid our cause I’m afraid . GB and CHI hit like girls . No major injuries . All that time to heal between penalties I guess . I see the Giants waking up against Chicago . Cutler won’t thread the needle in the wind on the East Coast . Just getting a hurricane in the area . Maybe the winds will linger . And NYG can get the run game going at home . Jay will be 19/45 for 190 . With 35 on the ground . 2/3 from Jay .

My sister lives in Michigan.

And sympathy for the Detroit Lions is beginning to creep over her like a fungus. I was talking to her after the game and she actually felt sorry for the Lions losing to the Vikings. Sure, I felt sorry for them when they lost to Chicago because of that weird call negating Calvin Johnson’s touchdown, but that was against Chicago, not the Vikings. It is that sort of behavior that makes me worry for her baby girl.

You’re right, I don’t know why there is such a pro-Green Bay bias when it comes to the analysts, but there really is. No matter who gets injured, no matter how sloppily they play, and no matter who they lose to, it seems like there is no shortage of commentators willing to act like Packer cheerleaders. Shoot, just Adrian Peterson alone should bump the Vikings into the elite range. If Peterson hadn’t lost yardage because of penalties on plays, he would have had nearly 200 rushing yards on Sunday! Suck it Chris Johnson.

Once a year I visit my wifes sister at the niece's B-day around 1st week of October .

The hateful Lion’s fan won’t allow Football to be watched . Generally the Lion’s only play on Thanksgiving . So now I have to force my wife to leave early . I was hoping that we went on the bye week of course . But do you think she could do such a small favor for a Vike fan . Not after week 3 . She moved the party until the next weekend . Sister-in-laws !!! So we will be leaving early to catch the Jets game in time . So by morbid liking fades fast . Believe you me .

Doesn't look like it.

Jared Allen didn’t join the Vikings until 2008 and Shaun Hill left the Vikings after the 2005 season, so if they have a history together and some bad blood, it is more likely something to do with Allen talking smack across the line of scrimmage.

Shaun claimed he didn't want to be punked . Or his team .

Pat Williams commented that Detroit Offensive players were trying to drag Defensive guys down to the ground on multiple occasions . In typical Pat fashion . He said they can’t pretend to be tough by cheating like that . And stated the Viking Defenders were exerting their will on the Lions . Jared said a Ref imediately warned him not to touch Shaun because he was a QB . That is when Hill jumped back in to entice a penalty . As Jared just laughed and called him fiesty .

by gothicpurple on Sep 30, 2010 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

That's great :)

The real wonder, to me, is that you could understand what Pat Williams was saying. He always reminds me of that sketch Adam Sandler did about the Excited Southerner.

Not shocking that Hill would engage in some amateur acting to try to get the penalty, I kind of think Favre did that to help with the “roughing the passer” call he drew.

Classics

Both Lom and Sellers found their classic niche in the Pink Panther series. No matter how many times I see it I can’t help but laugh.

Back to football, I think Favre still has a bad taste in his mouth for how things ended with the Jets. Not with management who gave him a fair shake but with others that bad mouthed his play while injured. He will go there with something to prove and we saw how well that worked with the Packers last year

by IndyVikefan on Sep 30, 2010 10:45 AM CDT reply actions

Betting on it.

You very well could be right. Favre has a history of pulling it together and finding a way to win games with an emotional component—like beating Green Bay in Green Bay last season. It doesn’t hurt that the Vikings players really like Favre and want to rally for him. But if Jared Allen can mix it up with Mark Sanchez, that won’t hurt either ;-)

I think I’m going to have to rewatch some of the Pink Panther movies now, I got them stuck in my head when I was looking for a clip to use.

WIth the Jets, one thing about Favre

is his ability to rise up for games that have personal meaning, and I think the way the season ended in New York, with him being pretty much tossed aside, might motivate him to have a great game. And I’m so sure Rex Ryan will make some kind of ’we’re happy with Sanchez as opposed to Favre’ comment…and he’ll Rex it up in the worst way possible, that I think the Vikes will be more fired up than at any other point so far.

Brett was brought in for these kind of games .

A sophisticated QB reading a sophisticated Defense . The Jets IMO . Have good overall not great Defensive talent . Rex’s style of Defense makes them great . Brett can break that Defense . Where Aaron and Jay will struggle . So much is made of some of our ememies wins . Not one was against a sophisticated defense . The Bears will also fade . Cutler is throwing thru some pretty tight windows . The windy city will haunt him . And did you see the major drop off in the Night game . Just like last year . In a regular analysis I’d say Chi would beat the Giants . But the extra factor of playing at Night gives the Giants the edge . Luck can sustain Chicago for 20 straight weeks . They will slowly faulter . I see they called up a Center from the PS . Kruetz is do for IR isn’t he . Urlacher has already out performed his current ability . The ground freezes . He will retire to IR like the others . And Hunter isn’t there this time to cover his butt . And I do love the length of Green Bay’s injury list . Undrafted free agent will start at ROLB . Collins and Chillar are added to the list of those sitting out of practice . As Detroit get’s to get after the Pack on one day less rest . Dare I say , GO kitties GO !!! One more time ….

Hey now!

Don’t knock on Gothic… He used to be really hard to understand, but in recent weeks (mostly since the opening of the season) I have learned to understand him better. I feel as if I learned a second language. Maybe Gothic has learned better English and is putting it into text better. Whichever it is, I dunno, but reading his postings are a little bit more interesting than they used to be. I can still tell that it’s a Gothic Post before even seeing the username at the bottom of the post though. But I am intrigued by his expectations, predictions, and valid points.

This is just more reason to dislike Buddy Ryan. Not just a bad person, but he raised Rex Ryan to be the fat, boorish pig he is.

We can beat those guys. They won’t be able to score 14 points on our defense. We just need to ride AP and get a few passes down the field, avoid turning it over, and we win.
