2010 Minnesota Vikings Roster Cuts - Open Thread

Is it thyme for Sage to pack his bags for a destination other than Minnesota? (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)

UPDATE (3:13 PM Central) - Minnesota has released K Rhys Lloyd.  Guess that last pre-season game wasn't enough to get him on the roster.

UPDATE (3:03 PM Central) - Minnesota has released OL Adrian Battles.  Still plenty of cuts to go before 5 PM Central time.

UPDATE (3:00 PM Central) - The Vikings have cut ties with WR Logan Payne and DE Mike Mongtgomery.

UPDATE (2:30 PM Central) - Pro Football Talk is reporting that WR Freddie Brown is on his way out of town.

UPDATE (2:25 PM Central) - The Vikings are now up to eight cuts on the day.  Receiving visits from the turk thus far have been FB Ryan D'Imperio, DT Tremaine Johnson, TE Garrett Mills, OT Chris Clark, RB Ian Johnson, G Thomas Austin, and CB Marcus Sherels.

UPDATE (12:25 PM Central) - We have our first cut of the day, as the Vikings have released CB DeAndre Wright.

The Vikings have to be down to the NFL-mandated maximum roster size of 53 in approximately 24 hours or so.  While some teams have already started wheeling and dealing. . .the Dallas Cowboys sending Patrick Crayton to the San Diego Chargers, for example. . .we haven't heard anything out of Winter Park quite yet.

We all know that the Vikings have some roster issues to resolve. . .the backup quarterback situation, where I personally predict that Sage Rosenfels is the odd man out and will (hopefully) get traded to someone rather than getting cut.

The New York Giants only have two QBs on the roster right now.  I'm not sayin'. . .I'm just sayin' is all.

It's also going to be interested to see if we trade some of the ridiculous amount of depth we have on our defensive line for some secondary help.  If we don't, some team is going to get an upgrade on their front four free of charge sometime tomorrow.

But we can use this thread for any and all roster speculation, breaking news, and stuff like that about the Vikings' impending roster moves.  Have at it, ladies and gentlemen!

If we keep T Jack

And let lose Sage or Webb..I swear I am going to Hadooken that smug little head of Childo’s.

I think T-Jack or Sage may be traded to the Steelers

Now that Leftwich is out 2-4 weeks and Big Ben is out for the 1st 4 games.

And their starting center

from last year, Justin Hartwig, has been given permission to seek a trade.

Let's go get Vincent Jackson

Pleeeeeease! They need a backup running back and we have a few we are going to have to let go anyway. then give them a 2nd rounder next year also.

Salary Too Big.

Lockeroom too tight.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Sep 3, 2010 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Not for this year it isn't.

Jackson would be a 1 year rent a player. With the CBA coming up, it would be in the Vikes best interest to give him up for a conditional 3rd round.

by Improvor on Sep 3, 2010 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

He won't play for this year's salary.

That’s why San Diego is looking to trade him.

I suggest we forget about Vincent Jackson.

by princelyfrank on Sep 3, 2010 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

My guess is...

the Vikings were the team to have a trade worked out and SD’s price was too high. That’s why we let Javon go. Maybe in a week or so the price will drop. Just an inkling I have about this…. Can you imagine Rice, Harvin, Jackson, Berrian and Camarillo come the end of the year? Best WR core in the NFL…..

Combine this with the best D Line in the NFL, one of the bst RB’s in the league, one of the most experienced (top 5 QB’s) in the league, one of the most reliable kickers in the NFL and you have a SB champion IMO.

Do that and then do something about our O line, like signing Kevin Mawae, and OMG!

Big big news

Seattle is going to (stupidly) cut another productive player. Houshmandzadeh is likely going to be released.

Vikings should pick him up ASAP.

Mo Johnston is what John Schneider could be in 4 years.

No,

by Codypc21 on Sep 3, 2010 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions

This wasn't his choice to be cut

Pete Carroll can’t help himself so MIke Williams will be #1.

You need a receiver I bet with Rice out and Housh could give you guys some stability.

Pete Carroll

About 27 hours from your posted article . Which brings up a point .

As you were debating your male birth control patch Vs. the male birth control pill too solve your personal dilema . And by the way . Neither really help with your cramps . And that is our main concern for you fella .
CBS was speaking of multiple teams asking about several backup DL men , QBs and other players . Why do you sit like ESPN and say that you don’t have any word out of WP . You mean you don’t have the time to check local papers . And you actually have no inside source .
Can you at least start a rumor or something . Why are we always the last to know unless Deek or someone does your work for you . We want real scoops . The Editor soap opera can wait until Bye Week !!!!

by gothicpurple on Sep 3, 2010 7:45 PM CDT reply actions

Perhaps I am missing your point (And I don’t think many would blame me for that), but everyone here, from Gonzo to Deek or someone else, has a job that has nothing to do with sports. They have real lives that don’t involve chasing down Chilly and Rick for quotes and scoops. This is more of a hobby and not a job since (I am assuming a little here) they don’t get paid to do any of this. So in order to live their lives while following their favorite football team, they allow those who might have the time to stay on top of things to help them out when things like this happen. I am sure they will have a post at some point detailing all the cuts and roster moves, but for now, with all this time left to go, there is no problem with creating a place for those who want to talk about roster moves to talk about possible roster moves.

Rosenfels trade: the good and bad

The good: we keep Jackson. We keep Webb, who I have to admit seems to have a world of potential, and swagger. We lose a potentially complaining voice in the locker room. This opens a roster spot for Rhys Lloyd. We get a draft pick, which will be helpful considering our aging group of veterans.

The bad: we lose a quarterback who can manage a game behind Jackson. If it comes down to Webb at any point, you can throw out the offensive playbook and just play “draw it in the dirt” football.

by medicineball on Sep 3, 2010 8:39 PM CDT reply actions

god assesment

i am very worried about our depth at QB now. And from here on out, the only reason that we are going to keep lloyd, is because the vikes dont plan on resigning longwell

by muffin man on Sep 3, 2010 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Lloyd's kickoffs last night

He was crushing the ball against the Broncos. Time after time his kickoff landed 7 or 8 yards deep in the end zone. One time a Bronco took the ball out and then that was fun watching him get utterly hammered by Nate Triplett. After that, the Broncos started to take a knee every time.

Yes, Lloyd is worth a roster spot, and no, he’s not any threat to Longwell ever. Maybe we keep both for several years, and Longwell eventually retires, and then Lloyd has his opportunity. Longwell has the place kicker job, period.

to the media, apparently all the time

Based on the number of news stories playing the violin for poor Sage Rosenfels, and how he arrived here thinking he would have a chance to start, and then we got Favre, and then he’s the #3, etc, etc, apparently a lot.

The recent “schism” story about how Favre supposedly didn’t respect Childress, and turned out to be true, possibly had Rosenfels as its source.

Wow.

That’s PURELY speculation. No one knows who leaked anything. And there is no evidence of him complaining. Grow up.

by PurplePeopleEaters on Sep 3, 2010 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

The leak stuff is speculative.

Sage did blow off some interviews regarding Favre’s arrival and return. He also declined to be interviewed in camp this year when Webb got a few reps ahead of him. It’s true that he never complained publicly which is applaudable, but it’s also clear he’s been upset and disgruntled at times this offseason.

by CanadianViking on Sep 3, 2010 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Can you blame him? He’s human afterall. And he was obviously he 2nd best QB on this roster. So showing some frustration is understandable. But their is no evidence he was becoming a distraction or being detrimental to the team.

I know he’s making millions, we shouldn’t feel sorry for him, etc etc. But no one wants to be buried on the depth chart.

by PurplePeopleEaters on Sep 3, 2010 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't blame him for anything and hope he has better luck in NY.

It did appear he was disgruntled so it’s possible he was becoming a distraction behind closed doors even though there’s no publicly available evidence other than some rumors. I don’t agree that he was the 2nd best QB either. In the two years he’s been on our team he’s had two poor training camps and one big preseason performance against the Ram’s third stringers. Rosenfels has gotten a lot of props because of people’s dislike of TJ rather than anything Sage has shown on the field.

i agree for this year

but that’s because we’ve passed on qb’s in the draft. Lost Thigpen, and now we’re passing on Sage. Can’t say we need Jackson when the choice could have went either way

TJack as a backup again next year

Keeping Tjack is not such a bad idea. He can be career backup. He knows the play book (he’s had 5 years to study it). He can run like the wind and is strong. He shows flashes of talent in between his inconsistency. And who doesn’t think the next year our starting QB won’t be named Donovan? Another aged QB that will come in at the last minute of camp to save our butts.

too bad

He was a good contributor. He just couldn’t break through past the other receivers. Then he got switched to running back and couldn’t break through them. I guess we’ll have a new punt returner this year.

Good for D-Rey, though. Maybe in NY he’ll have a chance to flash his talents. Good luck to him.

Denver’s rumored to be shopping CB Alphonso Smith for a 5th round pick. Mile High Report even opines the Broncos were “showing” him to the Vikings last night (he’s the one who picked Webb).

Question is is Smith worth it? He was a high 2nd rounder last year. Not sure where he’d rank right now on the Vikings depth chart.

by jianfu on Sep 3, 2010 8:54 PM CDT reply actions

Damn Denver gave up a first round pick from Chicago in the Cutler trade to get that guy and now they are shopping him a year later? Crazyiness.

I think I’d prefer Smith to those two, but I think you’re right the difference might not be worth the trouble. Coming out, Smith was a production-over-tools type prospect, and thus far he seems both undersized and a bit slow. I think he’d play better in a pure zone scheme like the Vikings’, though (he has good instincts and ball skills, just can’t play man).

Corner’s a real tricky spot. It’s obviously a concern, particularly opening against Brees and Co., who will likely pick on guys like Wright and Sherels all night long. On the other hand, in a few weeks guys like Cook and Griffin will maybe return. So then a guy like Smith would just likely join the ranks of Allen and Sheppard down on the depth chart.

I don’t see how he can, though. He’s on the small side and the Vikes are suddenly fairly deep in the secondary talent the moment Griff and Cook return. I like his spirit, though.

Bill Noethlich

I meant to say something about Bill Noethlich Noethlich, the tackle out of Southwest Minnesota State who the Vikings cut before the Broncos game. He hung around in training camp and the preseason for a long time. I bet he surprised a lot of people who never gave him a second thought. He fought his way through a lot of challenges. I give him a round of applause.

by medicineball on Sep 3, 2010 10:03 PM CDT reply actions

We better get a decent backup.

Tjack is done. I cannot stand him. He stank in the preseason against like 3rd stringers, what makes Childress think he can do better against ie the Jets D?

Hard Knocks

I just laugh everytime they show Mark Sanchez with a Taco Bell hat on. Why? I cant pin-point it. I do think he should take the leaf blower off his back before he scrambles though.

I dont see how the Vikings dont go after Housh. Its just a no brainer. They will throw some caaish his way. No way we can go into the season with Cami as the second best WR on the team. Camis a sneaky #3. We will all learn to love that guy before its all said and done. Trust me on that. Cami comming here will go down as one of Brads best moves. Also, this team is far from done making trades before the deadline.

I like Camarillo but he's a short zone slot guy only.

Berrian’s got deep speed and he generally holds onto the ball. One play in preseason doesn’t mean he has bad hands.

probably true, but the chemistry between favre and camarillo looked good.

however, berrian did finally have a really nice game in the nfccg. i just think camarillo is going to be a reliable target who cathes a lot of balls this year.

I agree with all of that.

Camarillo is going to be that reliable guy on third downs and convert a lot of the first downs that Chester did for us last year. He’s a good pickup for us and he’ll make a lot of plays in the short-middle of the field.

I hope the Vikings name Sherels to the practice squad, and Wright to the team (at least until Cook or Griffin can return). Then perhaps move Wright to the PS.

if a team puts a player on the waiver wire,

the team that picks him up HAS to put him on their 53 man roster. i don’t think any team will pick up hardesty becuz he just sustained a season ending knee injury. he will not be able to play this year. if another team picks him up, he will not be on their I/R.

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

When a veteran player gets hurt during the season he can be put on I/R with no problem. The same does not hold true for newer players prior to the 53 man roster being finalized.

you are avoiding the question...

hardesty got hurt. he got cut. i assume that he will go on cleveland’s i/r if he passes waivers (which he should due to his torn acl). you say another team can pick him up and put him on “their” i/r. i say no, they have to put him on their 53 man roster as a rule. you say, but they have until tomorrow. i ask, cna the pick-up/then-cut w/ quick turnover? is that within the rules? and hardesty is a rookie (if that means anything).

in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.

by jethrophet on Sep 4, 2010 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

It could be one of those “if you do this, you will get payback at some point,” like the Hutchinson deal. I’m not sure Hardesty can come back from the numerous knee operations he’s had.

The Vikings brought White in for a 12th hour workout before the draft last year, so that’s interesting in that regard. I’m not as infatuated with Webb as some. Of course, White looked really bad in Miami last year, and I’m not that infatuated with him, either.

The fit’s hit the shan in a hurry for some of these 2009 2nd rounders: Alphonso Smith, Pat White…

Thus far the only thing that’s really bugged me was Seattle trading Josh Moore. That guy would’ve been a starter for Minny in week 1, and he’s good enough that he’s not necessarily relegated to special teams once Cook and Griffin return.

I guess the Reynaud trade bugged me a little, too. I remember after Chilly gave Mewelde Moore his walking papers they had a very vanilla return game for a long time. Let’s hope we’re not going back there.

http://1500espn.com/sportswire/Pelissero_Trade_helped_sort_out_roster_but_it_left_Vikings_thinner_too

He has them keeping 10 (!) D-Linemen. They are too talented and valuable to be cut; likely one or two will be traded for pieces we need (O-Line, corner, draft picks, etc.)

Know the value of your spare parts; special team guys like Triplett, etc. are dime a dozen. Pass rushing D-Linemen are worth a lot.

Redskins: Selvish Capers (right tackle only), and Tyrone Carter (drafted by the Vikings several years ago)

Lots of fans saying they should make trade bait out of all those talented backups on the d-line, but need to keep in mind — a year from now, Pat Williams will be retired, Ray Edwards will be an unrestricted free agent, K Williams will be in his 9th year, and Allen in his 8th. Those young backups are too valuable to get rid of, including Griffen.

by rovibe on Sep 4, 2010 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Not true

You are talking about players that will not be active on the 45 day game roster. So they just sit. And take up space when a regular player gets hurt. Webb’s OK because a third QB is allowed free of charge. But the other guys are wasted unless they can play.
Every single person except QBs started for us at one time or another last year. Every one of them. That is what we have to plan for.

Bingo

He’s also a Minnesota native. I have to believe he’d at least be able to beat out Jon Cooper for the backup spot. Best thing – he can cover for the injured Sullivan at center, letting Herrera move back to his more familiar RG spot. Otherwise, they’re starting the rookie DeGeare at RG vs. the Saints, and that scares me…

Cooper or Cook can play center and leave Herrera at RG

why Housh was cut

According to an NFL analyst on Sirius NFL radio this evening, Housh was cut partially because of his performance, and partially because he was a locker room cancer. He is a very independent thinker, and he is very outspoken. The Seahawks had him playing X, meaning deep routes. He prefers to work the middle.

So I hope we skip him.
