So, you want Leinart? Yeah, ok, read this then rethink it.
Seriously, I knew this from the get go, and people here have been thinking of signing this moron? You're kidding right? I hope you are. I don't care for T.J., but if I had a gun to my head, damn right I'd be picking him over Leinart any day of the week!
Leinart never learned NFL isn’t Hollywood
By Jason Cole
Those who have watched quarterback Matt Leinart(notes) go through the motions of his college and pro career consistently come to the same basic conclusion about him.
He lives his life as if he were an actor playing a scripted role. Alway's has, even from the days before the 2006 draft when he spent more time doing commercials and photo shoots rather than concentrating on what the NFL wanted from him. Somehow, some way, no matter how bad the circumstance, Leinart could flash his winning smile and it would all turn out great.
Too bad sports doesn’t go that way.
On Saturday, Leinart’s career hit the unscripted portion when he was cut by theArizona Cardinals when no team was interested in trading for him. Worse, few teams are interested in him. The Seattle Seahawks and coach Pete Carroll, Leinart’s coach at USC, have a need and could be interested. Likewise, theMinnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars are kicking the tires on Leinart.
Leinart’s pretty-boy attitude has worn thin after four years in the NFL. Instead of grinding it out to learn his profession and earn his position, Leinart has lived his working life as if he were getting ready for an audition on ”Entourage.”
”He’s all-L.A.,” one teammate said sarcastically during training camp. The mocking grew as the player went on. ”Dude, he’s so down with the scene.”
The problem is that Leinart wasn’t so down with his teammates. The belief is that every time something got hard, Leinart folded. He is the anti-Kurt Warner(notes), a guy who worked his way from stock boy to NFL MVP.
Warner, who started the past two years and led the Cardinals on the most successful two-season run by the team in more than 50 years, retired after putting on a clinic on mental and physical toughness.
”Kurt was a man,” another player said. ”He’d get the crap knocked out him and never say [anything]. He was playing with half his body banged up, needing surgery, and he’d give you that Kurt, positive-attitude stuff. He was the real deal … Matt? Whatever. He gets a hangnail and he’s whining.”
Other people around the NFL saw the same thing. In 2008, when the Cardinals were about to go on their Super Bowl run, they ran into a buzz saw in New England on Dec. 21. With snow coming down and piling up fast, the Cardinals fell behind early in an eventual 47-7 loss. Warner was ineffective that day in the bad conditions, so Leinart got in early, his first serious action of the season. Instead of playing with urgency (particularly with his former college backup, Matt Cassel(notes), starting for the Patriots at the time), Leinart played as if he wanted no part of the moment. He fumbled twice, got sacked twice, intercepted once and completed only six of 14 passes.
After that game, a New England coach mocked Leinart.
”That’s a good player? That’s a first-round pick?” the coach said, rhetorically, seemingly insulted that someone would give Leinart a smidgen of respect.
Leinart never seemed to understand he was lucky to have had all those great moments at USC. Fact is, the only reason Leinart started over Cassel in college is that Carroll and his coaching staff couldn’t figure out who was better. They went with Leinart, he played well and the rest was history.
That’s how Carroll explained it when NFL coaches were researching Cassel, the Patriots’ seventh-round pick in 2005.
And Cassel never complained.
By comparison, Leinart whined and moaned when he was taken tenth overall in the 2006 draft. He even threw former USC assistant coach Norm Chow under the bus back then. Leinart told anyone who’d listen that Chow, who had become the offensive coordinator at Tennessee, had expressed to him privately that Chow wanted Leinart instead of Vince Young(notes), the Titans’ pick at No. 3. That immediately put Chow in a bad position with Young.
Instead of simply thanking the world that he went No. 10, despite his mediocre arm strength, Leinart played the role of victim. He pouted more than former clubbing partner Paris Hilton. He put up some interesting stats as a rookie in 2006. But instead of using that as a foundation to work hard, Leinart showed up in 2007 simply expecting to be the starter. This was the script, after all.
That attitude went over with new coach Ken Whisenhunt about as well as Whoopi Goldberg at a Glenn Beck rally. After five games of the 2007 season and a broken collarbone, Leinart was out as the starter.
Leinart recovered from the injury but became the Hollywood equivalent of an extra. His D-list status was cemented in the minds of many players when he spent the 2009 offseason working out with FOX NFL reporter Jay Glazer, who tried to make Leinart a tough guy by giving him MMA training.
Most players and coaches just chuckled. The notion of a sports writer making a football player tough was laughable. The fact that Leinart had to do something to draw attention was perceived as hollow, a man seeking the spotlight without actually doing something.
Perhaps that will change. Early in training camp, Whisenhunt saw promise in Leinart. He took issue with a report of mine that said Leinart was not highly thought of in the Cardinals locker room.
”That’s just not true, he’s had a great offseason,” Whisenhunt said on Aug. 1. Sadly, between that moment and now, Whisenhunt couldn’t put up with all the whining, even if it meant making Derek ”Wild Thing” Anderson the starter. When Leinart complained about not starting in the third preseason game, Whisenhunt was finished with him.
Leinart probably isn’t. Quarterbacks are too tough to find in this league, so somebody will take a chance on him. Hopefully, he’ll get a clue about what the script really takes.

Pride of Detroits village idiot
Naw, don't worry
Only way this jerkoff got signed by the Lions if Matt McHale Millen was still in charge. You guy’s, Im really gonna start worrying about next year.

Well
They are going to rear their heads and start biting, but as far as winning the division or wildcard, that will come about next year at the earliest I think. I know a few thought I was nut’s, but I do see the Lions going anywhere from 6-10 to 8-8.

Another Pretty Boy "prototype"...
Who thinks being a #1 pick means no hard work. No learning curve and the $ is for me to party up life. Prodical sons who waste their good years without thinking of the long term. Except in football there is no Daddy to come home to and forgive your errors. The big Daddies of the NFL (coaches/owners) will say he wasted enough time and $.
Alex Smith hung in there and found out from a guy named Singletary “work breeds success” -Alex was lucky to learn before it was too late. You could just tell Matt wanted everything handed to him.
We’ll see him on some sport segment in a few years and we’re gonna be expected to whimper for poor Matt-I don’t think so.
Not sure about Sanchez
I think he got an early taste of real life in the NFL. He’s been humbled from the get go, so I would think his head has been firmly pulled from his arse.

Sanchez is different
He grew up relatively poor in LA, went to a public high school, was from a minority background (who was the last Mexican star QB?), and had to WORK to get recognized.
Leinart on the other hand went to a rich prep school (Mater Dei HS), was a white “pretty boy” and got lucky to get the starting job at USC over Matt Cassel (Pete Carroll basically said it was a coin-toss).
I predict Sanchez will have a successful NFL career. Heck, he has already accomplished much more than Leinart in the NFL! (Sanchez = 2 playoff wins, Leinart = zero playoff appearances)
Don’t just lump all USC players together as whining losers just b/c Leinart is. Cassel, Carson Palmer, Troy Palumalu, etc. are all great (former USC) players.
Who was lumping?
Only name I see being called out as a crybaby is Leinart’s.

Nice to know that race is a factor here.
"What is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women."
Let me rephrase that feeble attempt at sarcasm.
The point is, pointing out peoples ethnicity when making evaluations about whether or not someone has been, or will be a success or failure is never a good thing.
"What is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women."
that's pretty insightful for an 11 year old chick with a purple hair-do.

Damn straight.

An easy answer
(who was the last Mexican star QB?)
Joe Kapp. The ONLY Hispanic QB who’s ever mattered, although, to be honest, it’s not so much because of his heritage as it is because of his years wearing PURPLE AND GOLD.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.

To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
he needs a good dose of green bay...he can paint the 'town' and hit the locals with his charm and debonair.
they will give ‘leinhart’ a new knickname…“leinie” (that’s short for ‘leinenkugels’ in case you don’t get this joke).
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
LMAO
Ironically, I’ve been drinking Lenie’s Oktoberfest all night long. You’re scaring me man! lmao

Not "Leinie"
More like, “Hey, Whiney, want a Leinie?”
Leinies are made by hard-working folks for hard-working folks. Leinart is more of a Wheach drinker at best.
hey whinehart....how bout a Zima !
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
My argument
The argument against signing Leinart is really easy…Derek Anderson beat him out for the starting job.
That is all anyone should need to know to realize this guy has little to no future. But ya, nice to have even more points to throw at people now!
okay, but don't sell derek anderson short...
this is no defense of leinhart, but derek anderson also beat out brady quinn. and i would much rather have brady quinn at qb than leinhart. derek anderson is a pretty good qb, he might not do everything, but he can read defenses, can throw, he has a quick release and he is accurate. i would take him over t-jack and sage any day.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
Quinn
Should probably be the third string QB behind Orton and Tebow…really? You like Quinn?
i'd rather have quinn than leinhart...i think i'd take him over t-jack too.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
but don't think i'm looking for THAT trade.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
Did you just say Derek Anderson was accurate?
Anderson makes Jackson look like Manning when it comes to accuracy. No to Anderson, Leinart, or Quinn.
by CanadianViking on Sep 5, 2010 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions
tell me how you really feel about it.
i don’t want to go after any of these guys…
but anderson beat out leinhart when the starting qb job was handed to him, and then his to lose. anderson needs a little time to sort it out in the backfield, and he has done alright. i mean he did make a pro bowl. quinn is in the t-jack type of situation, so until he gets enough of a chance to show he can’t develop, i gotta give him the nod over leinhart.
that being said, i really don’t think they are worth evaluating to this degree.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
When all three QBs mentioned have a worse career passer rating and completion% than TJ you're just wasting time.
Quinn and Anderson are sitting at 52% completion percentage for their careers and passer ratings in the 60’s. Leinart has the best stats of the three and he’s behind Jackson in almost every statistical area for his career. Did anybody read that Whisenhunt said that UDFA QB Max Hall had the best training camp of anybody in Arizona this year?

Anderson
The only knock I had on him was being on a sucky team. He had one great season and helped carry the team. This year will prove one way or the other if he is real or not, but I have a feeling that on a good team, Anderson will be just fine.

I could have beat out Leinart this year...
The team decided they didn’t want him… hell, Jamarcus Russell could have grabbed that spot.
I heard today… from a Cardinals fan… that the team decided against Matt when he came off the field during pre-season this year complaining about a receiver… when he obviously overthrew the guy by 10 yards (surprise, I know).
Matt ‘its always someonelse’s fault’ Leinart. buh-bye!
I BELIEVE...

I swear I saw no Leinart posts when I started mine.
Great minds think alike, I suppose.
I do think that Leinart could provide more meaningful competition next year than Sage would have.
There were no post's.....
But a few saying drop Sage and T.J. and sign him. No way. And I think Sage would have spanked his arse up one side and down the other.

As a Vikings fan it is really frustrating to see “Profane” like you always knocking on and booing Jackson. I know he “should” be able to put it out of his mind but that is crap. Maybe if fans cheered him instead of booing he might have a chance to perform well in games.
Get over yourselves, you couldn’t throw the football either and you obviously aren’t an NFL GM/coach so stop being a couch coach.
hahahahahahahahahahahaha
Listen! who said i don’t want him to perform well. I am trying to say we need to move on with tjoke. When i saw him play 3 years ago i said he was not going to make it. Yes i am no a "pro
GM/Coach. But if i can tell 3 yearts ago that i am right,. May be i should be a “Pro”. If we got rid of three years ago, we could so many chance to develope another “REAL QB” unlike the joke of a QB we have now. To answer your reply hahahahahahahahhahaLOL
lol
So you saw him his rookie season, playing in 2 meaningless games, and were like “… yeah. this dude will totally never make it as a pro,”? Really though, I think you should become a pro-talent evaluator. Or at least a food critic. “This food… tastes bad. That pie.. tastes bad.”
Honestly though, you’re stuck with Jackson for not only this year, but, at the minimum, next season as well. Once Brett retires, Jackson should get that whole subsequent season to show what he’s got. That’ll give him 5 years in the league. If he doesn’t show anything, then yes, by all means, we need to cut him or just leave him as back-up.
Leinart must be the second comming of
Broadway Joe i bet the Jets are chomping at the bit to get ahold of him I can’t believe any on e would dis on him…..end sarcasm

A Great QB is Hard to Find.
I think the media makes too much out of these college QB’s. They do nothing in college systems that should project them in the NFL. I don’t think people realize how hard it is to find a NFL caliber QB. It is after all the most coveted of all NFL positions. This is why guy’s like Favre, Warner, Marino, Elway etc. hang on so long. These old QB’s aren’t getting better the young guy’s just suck that bad.
I agree that most underestimate how difficult being a NFL QB really is.
But I don’t think your right about the other.
They do nothing in college systems that should project them in the NFL
If that were true then there would be no difference between a 1st round selection and a late round selection. But the skills shown in college do make a difference. That is why more NFL QBs come from the 1st round. More 2nd rounders than 3rd, ect.
Leinart was an extremely accurate college QB that won the Heisman. No one knew if he had “it” but he showed everything else in a pro-style offense.
