Pros and cons of signing Matt Leinart
The Arizona Cardinals cut Matt Leinart today in the wake of Leinart's public frustration about being a backup again, especially to Derek Anderson. While it's true that Leinart's career passer rating is better than Derek Anderson's, Leinart has done little else to suggest he's a starter...unless he were to sign with Minnesota, learn this year, and replace Favre next year.
Why Minnesota?
PROS: In this preseason, Leinart has completed 70% of his passes. SEVENTY percent! We've all heard Chilly talk about how high-percentage passes are the key to the much fabled KAO, and I presume that he meant something closer to 70% than 57%. Some would say that Leinart is a proven winner who just needs a chance, so give that as much or little credit as you will. Leinart is also a lefty, which means that he is supposedly tapping into the creative side of his brain more often than most. It would mean that McKinnie and Hutchinson could continue to be the run side of the line while upgrading the RG to more of a pass pro position and hoping that Loadholt can stop of the premier pass rushers.
CONS: His preseason yards per attempt is about 4, often behind the line of scrimmage. OK, the first part of that is a con, but the second half is a pro to Chilly and Bevell, who believe that the answer is always to throw short of the 1st down marker on 3rd downs at least 80% of the time. And anyone who has failed to beat former Pro Bowler Derek Anderson for a starting job may be able to beat TJ, but do we really want that?

Uh
Wouldn’t.. the whole… switch RG to pass-pro and hope Loadholt can handle elite DEs (everybody knows he struggles with speed-rushes, like McKinnie) be considered a con?
So, basically, the only pro to signing Lienhart is… we get a check-down QB. Awesome.
Childress loves checkdown QBs
and throws short of the 1st down marker.
To you or me, Leinart is TJ with a bit more potential that probably won’t be realized anyway, at best.
Yea...
He is JUST like Tjack.
They are both QB’s in the NFL. That makes them pretty much twins in my book.
Not exactly.
Both are considered mobile, and they are about the same age.
TJ is less accurate.
Leinart is a lefty.
Leinart did well as a rookie (better than TJ did as a sophomore) and could theoretically build on that.
Leinart faced quality competition in college and learned from Kurt Warner as a pro.
Leinart was expected to be better than TJ all along.
TJ almost never looks off his 1st option; Leinart can check down (he’s done it too much this preseason, if anything) like Chilly wants his QB to do.
At this point, those who aren’t in the Leinart camp are suggesting that he’s no better than a backup, which is probably all that TJ could be, so why not improve the odds that a young QB on the roster could be useful someday?
Surely the 10th DL or 10th DB could be cut to add talent to the most important position on the team.
Leinart does not want to play...
He wants to be famous.
Leinart is nowhere near TJack in terms of arm strength, mobility, experience, character and knowledge of the team.
If we can get him at close to a minimum contract, sure why not? But not to replace TJack. That would be crazy.
Both are considered mobil???? by who ... you
boy did you miss the boat
Leinart has slow foot speed, lack of athleticism, slow release, not very good zip on his passes, and he can’t make all the throws … other that that hes an OK backup QB at best
I’m confused why the Vikes traded Sage and kept Tjax, honestly, I think they are making the same ‘pet project’ mistake that the Cards made with Matt … and seriously, you should watch some video of the kid play before you open your mouth
Hey I think it's a great idea!
I would love for you to sign Leinart. It would be nice to see some nice medicore QB play out of the Vikings and let them be a .500 team.
Did you break down the pros and cons of KC signing him too?
Maybe you’ll get more comments over on their site
"We have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

After cutting Safe,
I don’t think the Vikings are going to then sign Leinart. Then we’d have to get rid of another QB, and we just got the situation figured out.
And really, there’s a reason Arizona doesn’t want him, and there’s a reason no one would trade for him.
Let some one else take the chance.
How many fingers.....
am I holding up? lol

I really agree that we should investigate this guy.
He was a terrific college passer. He is big. He is accurate. He has some experience.
It is his arm strength that just doesn’t get it done for the Arizona system. Whether or not he can get it done deep under Chilly’s system is something I can’t answer.
But investigating it isn’t a bad idea.

Well
considering Arizona had two of the better wideouts in the league, and he still managed to lose the starting job, twice, I believe it’s safe to assume he wouldn’t be getting it done here.
Well yes but he did lose out to Kurt Warner who had been one of the better Qb’s in the league the past few seasons.
Losing out to Derek Anderson is bad but I think that had more to do with his personality then it did with his actual performance. Too me, he and Anderson looked about the same. Leinart is more accurate then Anderson but Anderson can make more throws and takes more shots down field then Leinart does.

I said no. I think the bloom’s off on Captain Checkdown. I’d rather go with what they’ve got for now and return to the well in the next draft or two for a QB. Or wait and see if someone else becomes available.
And subjectively, Leinart seems like a flake who still has some maturity/perspective issues despite the fact he’s now entering (assuming he sticks somewhere) his 5th year in the league. I don’t want the Vikings to try to build around him.
Um
Apparently you didn’t read the article I came across and posted? The puffed college numbers were explained. And also, why Lienart’s back up in college, Cassell, sought after more then this guy.
"Over? Did you say over? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!" "Germans?" "Forget it, he's rolling."
The Jason Cole one?
It didn’t say anything about puffed up stats.
Pete Carroll may have told NFL coaches that there was little difference b/t Casssell and Leinart to help Cassell get drafted (that’s always good for his program), and both QBs were elite 11s according to rivals.com.
i hear ya. but do you suggest we cut tj and pick up troy smith at this point?
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
oh, no, no, no....i am NOT suggesting to cut t-jack for anybody.
i was ASKING gothicpurple if that is an idea that HE was suggesting, is all.
but, to your point…
i think that the 10 DL on the roster is probably for a trade in the near future.
for what position? i don’t know…but i hope that is what the strategy is.
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
Pros: None
Cons: He’s terrible.

Accuracy is not a pro?
All I hear is how inaccurate T-Jack is. But we don’t consider a 70% accuracy rate a pro?
I’m pretty sure this guy can never recover to become a franchise QB. It would take a system and a a coach meshing together 100% to get there. But we should take every opportunity to explore every viable option to solidify our QB situation.

Umm, Leinart's career completion % is 57.1 compared to Jackson's 58.7.
Not a big difference between the two but where are you getting %70 from?
by CanadianViking on Sep 6, 2010 8:29 AM CDT up reply actions
the 70% is his 'pre-season' completion percentage, at only 4 ypa...
which means he checks down almost all the time. he is not accurate downfield, he is hesitant and predictable going down field. i think that is a big reason they didn’t like him in az (plus lack of leadership, command, playmaking, high salary…).
in the future there will be no war...there will only be rollerball.
Yeah, I don't see much reason in checking him out.
Some people will say that Jackson has the same negatives as Leinart but at least he’s good in the locker-room and not an overpaid jerk like Leinart.
