Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Finally some good Freakin' News!

I know I am not the only one who thinks Winter Park has had nothing but rainy sad clouds and kicked puppies lately, so I am proud to link you the conglomeration of Week 1 opening media day and AP interview.  Some highlights of note before the link and subsequent avoidance of plagerism.  Also added is the amount of asses that the particular notation kicks.

1) Ced Griffen is practicing full speed and taking reps with the 1st team.  Frazier has edited his timeline for Ced and is now NOT ruling him out of this Thursday's game.  It is optimistic to say the least that he'd start, but highly possible Ced sees significant time barring not set backs.  3.5 Asses out of 5 (plus 1 if this is true because getting Ced back would be HUGE)

2) AP apparently has found out why he fumbles and offers a Monsterman style quote for those folly enough to continue to attempt to strip the ball. (3.5 Asses as I REALLY don't think AP fumbles that mutch.  He is way below the fumbles/attempt rate that Sweetness and other backs posted for their first 3 years.)

3) The entire team is palpably pissed off and will be gunning to make this one personal.  Several players are on record with this.  Expect a totally different Vikings team then we have seen so far. (5 asses kicked if true because I am started to develope a stinging hatered towards all of those oligarchic Saints fans that come over to the DN)

Nice. Positive news.

I hope Longwell has worked on kickoffs so he can get it down to the 1 yard line. No gift yardage.

Can’t wait to watch the new and improved “NF” Peterson. (no fumble)

It’s time to kick some serious ass in prime time!

Love those AD quotes.

Sounds like one of his solutions to stop fumbling is to destroy anybody who goes for the strip instead of the tackle. AD’s going to be flattening guys like this all year.

The Saints appear soft on Defense .

We need to remember that if Colston takes the right shot on that Kidney he could miss the whole season . We want R. Bush to play WR . He was destroyed in the last game . As was Shockey . I see big holes in their Defensive Trenches . Young and soft inside . No wonder they are forced to blitz . The Bears reject will start at LDE . Vilma is limping and riding the bike in practice . And the MLB is going to get blown up ! I wonder if their CB’s can handle quick slants . Who was brought in to replace Sharpers production ? Nobody . Even their first rd pick is listed as 5th on the depth chart . Gregg Williams will take a lot of heat for Thur. as Brett continues to stay on the field and push his agenda . The Defense will win this game thou . Bank on that !

When we win . What will the analyists say about Green Bay's chances of winning the conference .

ESPN will root for us against MIA . They are East . But not North East Coast . Can they be any more obvious . We will see how they portray GB in Philly . It will be interesting . Jaws will be tongue tied .

One thing about AP's fumbles

OK, a few things… He had 7 regular season fumbles last year, and lost 6 of those (ref: NFL.com), and all of a sudden he has a reputation for being a fumbler. Titans RB Chris Johnson had 3, and no one complains. So instead of saying AP needs to figure out how to eliminate fumbles (which will never happen), people should keep things in perspective. The real thought should be that Peterson needs to figure out how to fumble 3 or 4 fewer times over the course of a 16 game season. For Peterson, that’s just one less fumble per every 80-100 carries. Which brings the next point – when you carry the ball well over 300 times, you’re going to get some fumbles. Next point — a stat released earlier this spring said that both AP and Chester Taylor were amongst the top 10 RB’s in the league for the number of times they were stopped for no gain or a loss on rushing attempts. The fact that both Vikings RB’s made that list and each saw their yard per carry average decline from 2008 totals clearly suggests the offensive line had some issues with run blocking in 2009. That said, I think you can make the case that some of AP’s fumbles originate from having to tangle with 300 pound defensive linemen who are much stronger than AP, versus getting past those d-linemen almost untouched as in previous seasons, where smaller LB’s and DB’s aren’t going to fare as well when trying to strip the ball from a RB more their size, if not larger. My long winded point is, when the offensive line improves, I think you’ll see a difference of 3 or 4 fewer fumbles for AP — just like Chris Johnson had. And nobody will be complaining.

You're being too apologetic for Peterson, I think

I don’t remember too many defensive-line fumbles from Peterson. It seems to me that he typically is attacked by CBs and LBs, and they’re the ones who manage to strip the ball from him. More than likely because, as he bursts through the line, he’s probably got a good hold on the ball, and then once he gets in the open field, he starts swinging his arms around as he tries to dance for yards.

In regards to the ‘fumble-prone’ tag, it wasn’t just last year. The year before that he had 9 fumbles, at least one of which was actually creditted to Jackson because Peterson didn’t get it tucked away properly (Atlanta game.). And the 7 of those fumbles he had last season, according to NFL.com, do NOT include the fumbles he had in the NFC CG. So he had 10 fumbles last year total, giving him credit for the botched hand-off that he should have had tucked away which was officially credited to Favre. 9 if you want to be super-official about it, but 10 for realism’s sake. It’s alot, no matter how much you try to dilute it.

You gotta remember that that official statistic does not count all that he — in the real world — was responsible for. For example, that handoff in the first half of the NFCCG was officially charged to Favre, but anyone who goes back and watches that play can plainly see it was AD that screwed up.

Also I think the concern is the way the fumbles happen, not just how many. The Clay Matthews strip is the classic example.

Finally … I think we all know there were problem with the O line last year. But blaming fumbles on them seems more than a bit of a stretch. Again, go back to how the fumbles often happen, they have nothing to do with the OL. And anywya, then … why didn’t Chestr fumble, even if what you said was true

I might get jumped on for this...

but why would you try to make excuses for AP. Pointing out another great RBs issues with fumbling doesn’t excuse it. Just because Payton had issues doesn’t mean you shouldn’t find it concerning and want him to fix it. Payton DID fix it…AP needs to or he’ll never be the great back that we all know he can be.

I agree with you

and I have doubts about the specific instinctive bad habit that AP refers to. Only the fumble in OT in Chicago meets his description, as far as I can remember.

Plus, if AP says he has a fumbling issue can't we take his word for it..

But I think the fact that he recognized the problem to the point of concentrating on fixing it says all we need to know about his intentions.

Solid Numbers but....

All kudos to Brown, Payton, Sanders, and Simpson, but…. well…

I expect better out of Adrian Peterson. I don’t think that any of those guys have anything in particular over AP, and I was there for years watching Simpson, Payton, and Sanders tear up the field. Brown is the only one I wasn’t around to watch first hand, but from what I can tell, that’s who AP is closest in comparison to, and from what I can see, AP has a better work-ethic, focus, and training, than Brown ever had. Maybe I’m expecting too much from AP, but I think he’s better than what we’ve seen so far and I think he’s still figuring himself out in some ways, still growing into the NFL-sized cleats. I think we haven’t seen the best of Adrian Peterson yet.

That was the point.

Each of these greats got better at not fumbling after their third year. You should expect better and you will see improvement. If not then AP will lose his spot as a potential Great back. I’m pretty confident that we will see a difference this year.
