Childress, Saints and late hits, schmate hits.

I read through the press conference transcripts following up to the Vikings-Saints rematch this Thursday. Both coaches and both QBs were asked about the "late hits" that apparently Chilly had commented on in the NFC Championship game last season. Brett blew it off. And of course, so did Coach Sean and QB Brees.

Now I'm not one to bitch about bad calls by the refs, blah, blah, blah. Happens every game. We blew the game. Period. It was our's and the team blew it. Not just Favre's INT...the TEAM blew it. Now - back to the "late hits". If Coach Sean and Brees stated that all the hits (on Favre) were legit, why is that at least two Saints' players were fined after the fact for the one hit on Favre (the refs later saying they missed that call) AND why is that Favre was NEVER sacked - not once - and yet he gets tossed around like Screech ("Saved By the Bell") in an Ultimate Fighter Match?

But the Saints played within the boundaries of the rules. No late hits. Right? Enlighten me....

I 'm looking

to see a Viking team hitting on all cylinders offensively- and burying all Saints defensively. Show me domination, Vikes!

Kennedy is hurt . That means Pat will be forced to take added snaps . Ouch !

They get a 10 day rest after launching their Defense on the Saints . It will get ugly . I real run to the pitcher’s mound I would guess .

This Thursday the Packers do not exist. Nothing else exists but Drew Brees’ knees.

naw

The whole team lost that game, and I for one wouldnt want tarnish a S.B. win for the Vikes with dirty plays, not now or ever.If thats the only way we could win a S.B. then I never want the Vikes to win one.
I want the Vikes to win by out playing everyone they come against, not with questionable hits, and cheapshots. If the only way to win is the wrong way, then losing is good at least we had pride and played like pros.

Wasnt made againts the Saints

I dont want my Team going head hunting against the Saints or any other Team.I never want to be part of any faction that condones hurting someone on purpose.I walk away from a lot of fights, not because I am afraid, but because its pointless.
Dont get me wrong ,you attack something I truly, love like my children or my wife, ill tear your arm off and beat you to death with it.
But for the most part,I am a gentel soul,do not confuse that with weakness,I pick and choose my Battles.
Sorry if you do not understand my previous post,I stood by it then and do so now.If the Vikings was to resort to dirty Tatics to win,I would cease to be a Viking fan.I love my Vikes because they didnt, they did not stoop to the low means. They played with Heart and Honor that my friend is good enough for me.

I don't think you should go out looking to hurt people

But you don’t play the game nice. Sooner or later you’ve got to get mean. You have to hit them like a hammer hitting an anvil you can’t let them catch their breaths and you have to make them fear when they see you. If you can do this then you’ve beaten that person. Do it to enough people and you win the game.

Minnesota nice is nice, but this is football. It’s supposed to be a tough sport for tough people.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

I agree to a point....

You have to have some physicality to your defense….I am a saints fans but I love Pittsburg, Baltimore, and the Jets type of defenses they play tough and physical and make you earn your yards……oh and by the way the Vikings arent to shabby themselves

i say the o-line

plays this game like rugby. get a d-line player on the ground after a late hit and lay the damned boots to him. i guarantee it wouldn’t happen again. take the 15….. it’s worth it.

If the Vikings lose Thursday

due to unnecessary penalties, I hope each poster that condones such activity remembers that was what they wished would happen.

The fact that that could be the difference between winning and losing our division race obviously means nothing. Only some kind of revenge is important.
The proper revenge is again putting up 500 yards of offense and stopping the Saints offense. That is payback. The kind that gets us to the Superbowl.

Nope, it doesn't get us to the SB at all...

it gets us a 1-0 record to start the season, and a bit of saved face. But the Saints already won the war, we’re just trying to win a far-less meaningful battle. Basically, the game is just a chance for Vikes fans to say “See? THIS is what would have happened if we hadn’t been fumbling!” to which Saints will simply reply “Yeah, that sucks. Man though, this Lombardi sure is awesome to finally get.”

No matter how it turns out, it’s not going to erase the NFC CG. I don’t even blame the Saints’ defense for it, I’m still pissed at that goddamn P.I. call on a ball that sailed ten feet over somebody’s head. Either way, a victory is just going to feel hollow, because it in no way guarantees a superbowl appearance like last year would have.

A victory never feels hollow when its the first game of the season.

Lets concentrate on this year.

I wouldn't worry about too much about the Vikings taking cheap shots.

Why do you think Chilly brought up cheap shots at the press conference? He’s already trying to work the officials to call a tight game, as far as late hits go.
On top of that, the league and the officials are all well aware of what happened. They cannot afford to allow it to happen again and in a typically over reactionary manner, to send a message. I predict that the first person to breath on a quarterback will draw a flag.

by cryhavoc on Sep 7, 2010 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

The reason more flags weren't thrown

was because it was the NFC CG, and there’s always a ‘just let’em play’ mentality to the playoffs. In the regular season, you’ll see more flags.

by Frost on Sep 7, 2010 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Just remember...

Try to remember how much the Vikings are hated by all the officiating crews out there, and how they KNOW all the talk that has been taking place since last year’s game with the Saints.
I would think that any hit even RESEMBLING a late hit will draw TWO flags; one for the penalty and one just because we’re the Vikings.

They’ll be watching this game like hawks!

by stilpony on Sep 7, 2010 1:06 PM CDT reply actions

I see we have a similar prediction, I just hadn't read down far enough yet.

Except that first flag for breathing on a quarterback, could come on either side. that’s not to say how they may apply the rules the rest of the game, after they have sent their “message”.

"What is best in life?"

by cryhavoc on Sep 7, 2010 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

They’ll be watching closely, not cause they hate the vikings, but because the league has said they are going to watch both teams closely and its a very public game. The NFL isn’t interested in seeing their game be made into a mockery.

by TrevorR on Sep 7, 2010 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Why I hate the Saints and where is Roger Goodell

Greg Williams’s comments are shocking. The statements he and some of your players are making are outrageous. Anybody who watched the Saints 2 NFC playoff games last year could clearly see their goal was to knock Kurt Warner and Brett Favre out of the game. Just look at the hit on Brett Favre below one hitting him high one hitting him low. I have seen players careers ended on hits like that. The rhetoric I hear from Greg Williams and his players saying this year that their goal is the same. Even the Raiders of the late 70 s early 80 s which at the time where the dirtiest and most hated team in football did not have their coach and players making comments like these. To me the Saints are the evil empire of Football. Sean Peyton and Mr. Benson could have stopped Greg Williams from saying those things and his defense purposely trying to knock players out of games so they must approve of it. I actually rooted for the Saints back in 2006 but I cannot now. To me it also unnecessary the Saints are good enough to win without playing dirty. By playing like that you are just going to force every other team that plays you to do some head hunting of their own for no other reason than survival. No player wants their career cut short by a cheap shot. The saints are not indestructible they are just human beings like other football players they can just as easily be injured by a crack back block or one player hitting you low the other hitting you high, or hitting you directly where you had off season surgery, as the Saints claim they are going to do. I personally hate to see players get hurt, however I recognized what it is Greg Williams turning the game into a street fight. So Mr. Williams I would be careful what you say or do for other teams should bring the wood to you. Where is Roger Goodell on all this you pretend to care about player’s safety but when you have a chance to do something about it you do not? Mr. Goodell will you please wake up and do something about this serious situation.

There is a difference between

playing to hurt and playing to injure. I appreciate laying someone out when you get an opportunity on a clean body shot. Diving after knees and ankles or going both high and low is busch league in any contact sport. That is where my argument begins and ends.

Fine line

Today in the St. Paul paper Anthony Herrera said that the Saints ride that fine line between legit physical play and dirty play. Since they hug the line sometimes it gets called, sometimes it doesn’t. Personally, I think there isn’t a lot of latitude for saying that there were no dirty hits in the NFC championship game if the NFL is levying $25,000 in fines for bad hits.

The English language was carefully, carefully cobbled together by three blind dudes and a German dictionary.

So why did the saints....

Not become cheap and dirty until after the NFCG? All season no one talked about the saints being a dirty team. During the season saints 5 roughing the passer Vikes 12…..

by blackandgoldbuddha on Sep 7, 2010 8:15 PM CDT reply actions

I tired as I am of having to continually repeat myself, I'll explain this again.

It’s not up to Viking fans to determine why the Saint’s were guilty of cheap shots in one game and not another.
4 fines for a total of $40,000 for repeated cheap shots, to 3 different players in one game is an acknowledgement by the league that the Saint’s were in fact, guilty of repeatedly taking cheap shots in “that” game. That is the issue at hand and it is a fact! Those fines were real. No one here invented them. We did not make them up. I can post the links again if necessary.

Did those cheap shot cost the Vikings the game? Not necessarily, but certainly they were a contributing factor. The turnovers and 12 men in huddle certainly contributed as well. I cannot speak for anyone else here, but I’m sick and tired of Saint’s fans coming over here to tell us it didn’t happen. Your denials do not change the fact the cheap shots occurred. They do not change the fact that the fines occurred. If you cannot except this and wish to continue to deny it, that is your prerogative. But do the rest of us a favor and keep those opinions on Canal Street.

Keeping it real is the key

And thanks Cali. Let’s hope for a great game between both good teams out there fighting for a victory. Pulling very hard for my Saints. They can’t let their guard down or they’ll be in trouble. I have a feeling it’s going to be a very close high scoring affair that’s going to come down to the wire. No injuries and no to very few penalties would be awesome.

Hey I know me and you have had this disscussion

and I hear you I really do. I only am talking to people who make claims that cheap shots were apart if the saints entire season. It just isnt true. For some reason its only one fan base making these claims….

It was part of their POST SEASON.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Sep 7, 2010 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I haven't heard anybody saying it was the entire season...

Once the post-season came around, though, and refs start to back off on throwing flags to ‘just let’em play,’ the Saints mentality seemed to change.

by Frost on Sep 7, 2010 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

No I don't think you're hearing anything.

To which “people” do your refer? Do you refer to belairjeff for his post? I see no mention there of the Saint’s entire season. Only one game. Are you referring to Skol Girl? She made no such claim, she referenced an article that she read and quoted Anthony Herrera. He is a player and not part of the “fanbase” that you refer to. Then she then referred to one game, the NFC championship game. She’s not talking about an entire season. Is it tzp? tzp mentions two playoff games, not an entire season. So, who are all these "people that are saying the Saint’s cheated all season? I don’t see them here. There isn’t one single, solitary person in this entire thread that makes the claim you’re allegedly responding too. Not even the quote from Anthony Herrera actually says the Saint’s cheated all year. He only said that they play a little close to the vest with the rules.
Like most the Saint’s fans that come over here. You cannot admit that your beloved Saints did, in fact, commit intention cheap shots on Farve. You come over here and say, “I just wanna talk football and play nice”. But all you guys ever want to do is tell us that we’re wrong. So, No. I don’t believe you’ve been “hearing” much of anything.

You are actually correct.

No one makes that claim. You are right I am wrong. I am not on your site playing nice. I repeat over and over its all in fun. The fact is we agree to disagree. This is apart of football. I am not here calling names, disrepecting, or taking shots. I am disagreeing so whats the problem.

by blackandgoldbuddha on Sep 8, 2010 8:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Who knows why Gregg Williams decided to lay off until the post-season

Personally, I wish he wouldn’t have, so that we could have seen it coming. Honestly, I didn’t even have an issue with the hits until AFTER the game, when Gregg made comments that seemed to suggest his gameplan all along was to take out Favre. That’s when the lightbulb clicked. I was more upset with the officials/Peterson’s fumbles during it.

Come the playoffs, you DID hear about the Saints taking out QBs though. I didn’t watch the game, but I did hear about how the Saints D was trying to take off Kurt Warner’s head. Repeatedly. And I watched the game and saw the Saints D try taking out whatever bodypart they could on Favre. Then out came Williams saying he hoped when they hit Manning he wouldn’t get up after. If they played in a wild-card round, there’d probably be a 4th example in there.
