The Sporting News has announced the winners of their annual awards for the 2010-11 NFL season. I'm not going to get into the other awards, but the one I've linked to above has me a bit on the miffed side.

It's the link to the Comeback Player of the Year Award. The winner of said award?

Michael Vick.

Yeah. . .I know this isn't the "official" award or anything, but I have a sick feeling that this is foreshadowing things to come. We know who that award should be going to. . .but I've got a real hunch that it's not going to happen. And, no sir, I don't like it.

sure henderson had a great year considering his injury

but it is real hard to argue against vick in this award. even if he is a disgusting person off the field.

Here's your argument

One guy came back in eight months from an injury that people said not only wouldn’t allow him to play football again, but possibly not even allow him to walk again. And he certainly wasn’t supposed to play this season.

The other guy is “coming back” from being a miscreant and a deviant and getting caught.

Gee. . .I think that’s a pretty solid argument.

Maybe the Vikings can figure out when Rae Carruth is getting paroled. Hell, they might give him Comeback Player of the Year before the season even starts if that happens.

except the award isnt just for exceeding expectations

it’s about stats as well. henderson had a solid, not spectacular year after a career threatening injury. vick had a spectacular year coming back from something that threatened his whole life. in all fairness, vick deserved it more.

by Glenn'sYank13 on Jan 12, 2011 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

The thing that "threatened Vick's whole life"

Was something that he brought completely and totally upon himself, and would probably still be doing if he hadn’t gotten caught.

I can’t even believe we’re having this fricking argument. Vick “deserves it more?” My ass he does.

i dont think they care about what messed them up previously..

..they just look at now that they are playing again, what kind of impact/numbers they put up..so although i firmly concur w/ you, i’m not sure if there exists a moral component to the award..

Hey, here's a question

If Brett Favre comes back for another team next year. . .or, hell, even for Minnesota. . .and has a great season after going through a bunch of stuff this year that he, largely, brought upon himself. . .would he deserve this award, too?

Or is that different somehow because he’s Brett Favre?

if that happens

then favre certainly would deserve it. had favre won it last year, i coudnt argue with the results after the performance he had.

by Glenn'sYank13 on Jan 12, 2011 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, he would.

The fact is, stats are surely going to be taken into account and Vick’s were tremendous. I think Henderson could just as easily win the award but he won’t because of the number’s Vick put up this season.

I'm surprised

I’d have thought it’d go to Bryan Urlacher (who had a spectacular year after being out on IR for the 2009 season), or Wes Welker, who performed well enough to be the leading receiver on the 14-2 Patriots and be elected to the Pro Bowl after a season-ending injury that would supposedly take two years to heal. Throw in the fact Welker’s injury happened at the end of last season (actually in early 2010), and it’s all the more remarkable.

How this is even considered Vick’s comeback season baffles me – he was playing in 2009 as a backup. Being a backup isn’t much to ‘come back’ from – guys do it all the time. It’s not like he went straight from prison to the Pro Bowl – and the fact that he was incarcerated because of his own stupidity shows how stupid his inclusion is.

Between 2009 and 2010, what did Vick come back from?

He played 12 games in 2009. He improved between 2009 and 2010. So is the award the most improved player of the year? If he earned the comeback award, he should have earned in in 2009 after returning to the field from 2 years of prison. But this year is a really good year after a rather poor year. Lots of players fit that category.

That is a travisty. EJ suffered what every one thought was a carreer ending injury, but gets no recognition for what is a truely great comeback. that is what awards like this are ment to honor.

Also figure in the fact that most of the people that voted on this were too busy clapping their hands and squealing with glee about the crap the Vikings went through this season to notice what Henderson was doing.

Ehhh

I love EJ but you cant say that Vick doesnt deserve it. He was signed last year as The Eagles just looking for some kind of spark. Then he gets bumped to third string quarterback behind Kolb.

-McNabb gets traded, and Vick subsequently gets moved to second string by default
- Kolb gets named the starter
- Kolb gets a concussion and Vick comes in and does well. Vick gets injured, and then comes back a few weeks later.
-Vick is doing very well
- Vick puts on what might have been the greatest stasticular performance in MNF history.
- Vick continues to do well
- Then starts to come down to earth.

Look at it this way. When EJ got hurt, and you said whats more likely to happen next year: Michael Vick will be an MVP candidate or EJ will play at a high level? I would’ve said neither, my point being is that sure EJ is a very worthy candidate but so is Michael Vick. Either one could win it in my opinion.

And its just an award. It means absolutely nothing, we’re aware of how great of a season he had and thats good enough for me. If they feel that Michael Vick is deserving then thats their prerogative, not ours. No reason to get all riled up about it Chris.

What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your entire rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

by Percy Harvin My Fav! on Jan 12, 2011 9:46 PM CST reply actions

What's he coming back from, though?

A spell of incarceration that came about because of his own behaviour? Or being bumped down the depth chart because of, well, his spell out of football because of… etc.

The guy deserves his props for his performance this season. But calling him a comeback player because of issues he himself caused, eh. It doesn’t sit right when you consider previous winners.

agree whole-heartedly

He didn’t “come back” from ANYTHING this year. He “came back” from 3rd string??? I understand the stats, but they’re irrelevant because HE WAS PLAYING LAST YEAR. That being said. He received this award, plain and simple, to sell more TSN magazines. Case closed!

Now as far as who SHOULD win this award, that’s up to debate. I can see Wes Welker due to his success and success of their team. I can see Urlacher for the same reasons. I can see EJ for the incredibly gruesome injury he had and the fact that he’s still anchoring one of the best D’s in the league. Dude was a freak down the stretch. But Vick? Nah. There should be no award for incarceration.

by DM_Purp on Jan 13, 2011 5:26 PM CST up reply actions

He's coming back

from a season in which he did absolutely nothing, to lighting the league on fire. That’s his comeback. It has NOTHING to do with his incarceration at all. He fell off the map, was a nobody on the field, but this year he turned it on.

by Frost on Jan 13, 2011 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

Understand, please,

I’m a Vikings fan (as many of you know). I’m also a VT fan (though I’m a bigger PSU fan). Those two things make me very biased against Henderson and Vick in this discussion and I really think it only comes down to those two players.

Why should Henderson win the award? Well, Chris did a great job above (minus his anti-Vick comments) explaining why he should. His career SHOULD be over, but the Vikings health staff brought him back with a program that has been named after him. Incredible. He is at least responsible for the win over the Cowboys, which is 1/6 of the Vikes’ wins this year.

Why should Vick win? You could argue all day about what Vick did and why he was out of football. Was it a cultural thing? Was it a power thing? Or was he just reckless? I’m not going to get into that. The fact is, he lost 2 football seasons in his prime. He came back last year in a limited capacity. This year, he exploded and reminded us of the athletic ability he displayed his first few years in the league.

In my honest opinion, you really can’t go wrong either way, though I know most of the recognition will go to Vick and Henderson’s comeback will largely be unrecognized.

Come on really...

… this is just the way things work. Vick’s case was extremely visible, plus he’s a QB. Despite his obvious lack of good judgment and morals, he plays football like a freak and is incredibly entertaining to watch. Who’s going to grab more attention than a guy like Mike Vick?

EJ is not that top a player to be recognizable outside of Minnesota. A better-than-average MLB like EJ just isn’t going to get the same kind of attention by the casual viewing/reading public, especially outside of Vikings fans.

Beside that…. who cares? This award seems totally pointless. I doubt Vick or EJ could care less. If they have any sense at all, they will ignore ridiculous awards that don’t impact them in any way.

Any sensible editor would pick Vick. Almost anyone would do it, whether you think VIck is a scumbag or not. It’s a stupid award anyhow and the only goal anyone could have is to get people to read your publication. Any other consideration would be downright foolish.

by HammeroftheGods on Jan 12, 2011 10:34 PM CST reply actions

I see it was...

… voted on by players and coaches. It still to me doesn’t strike me as that odd or that big of a deal. Vick is just going to get tremendous attention because he’s a QB and he did play extremely well.

by HammeroftheGods on Jan 12, 2011 10:39 PM CST up reply actions

Perhaps this is a stupid question

But didn’t Vick come back last year? I know he was third string and got in occasionally for McNabb when they wanted to run some wild cat plays or the like. But he had a whole season to come back, a whole season to reorient himself to playing football. E.J. had from late December to the start of training camp. He suffered the break of the biggest bone in his body—a break that should have ended his career. That, to me, demonstrates the remarkable comeback. I don’t know what the parameters of this award are, but for E.J. to be play at a decent level, let alone be on the field on opening day, is far and away the more deserving comeback. Who expected Vick to eventually get back to playing like he was capable of? Most people. Who expected E.J. to get back in that short of time or at all? Probably just E.J. There’s your difference.

Who really deserves it

WR Mike Williams, SEA. Not only did he lead the ‘hawks in receiving this year, but he’s also a reason that a 7-9 team knocked the reigning champs out of the playoffs. Carroll probably deserves coach of the year, too.

by KC Viking on Jan 13, 2011 1:13 AM CST reply actions

They both deserve it, honestly.

I wouldn’t be upset if either of them won the award. I seriously doubt EJ cares if he wins some pointless award, anyhow.

by PurplePeopleEaters on Jan 13, 2011 9:48 AM CST reply actions

Please stop saying Vick “deserves” accolades. He’s actually getting praise for acting like normal human beings do without the jail time to convince them of how they should be. Most of us don’t throw parties in which we torture and kill animals because that’s not the right thing to do. Are we praised for our behavior? So he’s acting like a non-violent, normal person now. This is praiseworthy?

Now, I realize that, football-wise, he’s had a nice season this year when little was expected of him on the field. And he’s actually a better football player now than he ever was because now he can hit a receiver or two, rather than just take off running like he did before his incarceration. But where’s the comeback? If we reward people for “coming back” from jail time, what sort of message do we send to law breakers everywhere?

I know he’s served his time and all is forgiven, but to reward him for doing what he’s supposed to be doing is beyond comprehension to myself. This reward should go to someone who worked their tail off to come back from a career threatening injury, as it has always been.

by Bodysuit Man on Jan 13, 2011 10:18 AM CST reply actions

Well…

Here’s the difference:

Eagles made the postseason because of Vick.
Vikings didn’t make the postseason, despite EJ’s comeback.

The award is, like most awards, slanted by records.

Rec'd

It’s sad that you can be the biggest screwup and selfish peice of shit and do whatever the hell you feel like doing because you’re rich and adored by fans and envied by other players in the league and then you get stripped down publicly for everything that was ABSOLUTELY HIS FAULT AND HIS FAULT ONLY. And then “come back” and here’s your award. Congratulations, we missed your ability so much(which never left him, yeah, even in prison) that we wanted to throw a party for your “return”.

by DM_Purp on Jan 13, 2011 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

I would argue

The message it sends to law breakers is that they come be rehabilitated and become productive members of society after their incarceration…which is, um…exactly the message I would want to send prisoners? What’s the alternative? Even after serving your time you’re still a piece of shit forever?

This doesn’t smell right. Vick brought everything upon himself and like above mentioned, and shouldn’t be praised for doing his job (for which he is highly compensated) like any other NFL player in the league.

EJ snapped his femur in half. Let me reiterate how freaking strong the human femur is. HE BROKE IT IN HALF. A bone that takes roughly 600lbs. of vertical force to break was snapped in twine. The fact that he’s even walking so soon is remarkable.

Everything that happened to him he brought on himself. Everything.

Should’ve been EJ or Urlacher. You could make a stronger case for Urlacher in the sense EJ played most of the season, and Urlacher was lost in the first half of the first game, but that’s neither here nor there.

Vick winning is a joke, stats aside.

that isn’t of your doing, like a serious injury that EJ or Urlacher had. This isn’t about contrition or me believeing he has or hasn’t changed.

Vick’s story is a good one, if not cautionary, I s’pose, but I find it hard to give him applause for coming back from adversity. Beause it is an adversity he created, fostered, promoted, then lied about to try and avoid the responsibility for what he did.

I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve a second chance. This is America, and the Government of the United States of America says he’s paid his debt to society, and if someone wants to give him a job, great.

I was pumped when we played Vick because i wanted to see him play. I watched the GB game last week because i wanted to see him play. The dude is a freak of an athlete and a hell of a football player. That aside. It’s ridiculous to give him an award for still being athletic. If AD took next year off and came back in 2012 would he get an award? What’s the difference?
