Brett Favre Files Retirement Paperwork
According to Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com and Sirius NFL Radio.
Awesome. Now we can move on, and all the haters can mothball their "Brett Favre is coming back to the Vikings in 2011" jokes. Thank goodness. . .I certainly don't want to listen to that crap for the next eight months.

One positive about this off-season
It’s going to separate the Viking fans from the Favre fans.
We need more of the former and less of the latter.

Nice sum up
I know we typically class heads Mr. Gates but I totally agree with you on this one. I know how hard a process this sort of sorting process can be and I wish all the Viking fans out there the best of luck through this sort of transition.
It really was a great career.

Don't worry
You can bring it back again when he un-retires again
Frye is honestly gotta be one of the top 10 3rd Stringers in all of the NFL right now--colbyb
I agree
The best thing for the Vikings is for them to part ways with #4. Just better hope that this retirement sticks ;)
Congrats to the man
I just wanted to stop by and give my congrats here to Favre for an amazing career and for all he’s done for the NFL, the Green Bay Packers, and the Minnesota Vikings (let’s just forget about that whole Jets stuff). It was an amazing run and I have been honored to both root for and against him…see the highs and the lows. It was quite a show and my hat goes off to him.
Favre
I’m shocked….
Moving on.

With all due respect
If he DOES come back, it isn’t going to be with the Minnesota Vikings.
But yeah. . .relatively sure he’s done this time.

Probably because it is not really discussion-worthy.
It would just turn into a Packer-bashing thread, and as much fun as those are, they really do not contribute anything to the site.
But Clay Matthews is a pretty cool dude.
Censorship is a mixed bag any way you slice it.
But the ire produced from seeing that kind of behavior from an NFL QB is not something we need on this site right now.
We know how it feels to have a QB who does some bone-headed things. At least Brett doesn’t do it to Cancer Survivors.
maybe so....
but then you can’t criticize the local station for pulling the video either. The NFL is fast tracking AR to be the new golden boy. I say, “Why participate in that?”
Just a lone voice out here. eh, whatever. Not my call.
I have to agree with Chris.
No bashing- but the truth is, Frazier has made it rather clear he wants some young blood, a potential QBOTF. Even you have to admit that Favre is no one’s QBOTF- he’s going to be 42 next season.
Furthermore, remember, this offseason is different in a very key aspect for the Vikings-Favre: Favre would be a free agent. Last offseason he was still technically on contract with us. This time, we’d have to sign him to a brand new contract, and I don’t see Wilf doing that, especially if Frazier doesn’t support the decision. (Wilf has, for good and bad, been a rather hands-off owner when it comes to his coaches- usually a good thing, but it backfired in a few key ways with Chilly this season.)
Sorry man. I think Favre has thrown his last pass as a Vike.
i think b4f and other's scenario for a bf return..
..is the lockout results in a shortened season where brett would say “hey ,i can do another 8 (or so) games”.. they actually touched on this on nfl network, to which (now analyst) kurt warner quipped.." hey, how short will the season be? maybe i can comeback, too"..
bottom line is , this is really grasping at straws..reality is no bf in minn or anywhere else in 2011 (or ever again)..

Thank you, Brett
You didn’t have to come to the Vikings, but you did. You gave us hope and the memories. We’ll never forget the San Francisco game, the Cowboys playoff game, or the come-from-behind game against the Cardinals. The Vikings were lucky to have you. Thank you. Best wishes in retirement.

I second that!
The Vikings had a long dry spell at quarterback before Brett. What a memorable career. Let’s hope the Vikings do not have another long dry spell between the anticipation of a competitive team and the reality of having one. Green Bay, Chicago and Detroit are set at quarterback and that does not bode well for the Vikings as competitors in the North Division. Here is to some great off season moves by Viking ownership and management.
And
Thank you for coming back because your teammates asked you to, not because you wanted to. Thank you for throwing bombs with seconds left on the clock when a game was well lost, just because you refuse to quit. Thanks for the damn impressive attempt at the come-from-behind in the first Green Bay game, whether it happened or not. Thanks for not leaving us, but staying on the sidelines at least, throughout this whole circus of a season- you could have gone home and no one would have blamed you, especially after the Bills game, but you didn’t- you were there throughout. Thanks for never being a crybaby- you admited every mistake you made and took full responsibility, never once did you bash Chilly, the O-line, the lack of recievers, or any other completely justifiable excuse you could have had at your disposal. Whatever decisions you made with the Jets was as a Jet- as a Viking, to me, you were truly a class act both on and off the field, and a true leader for our team.
Favre is a devisive issue for Vikings fans, I get it. But while I believe his decision to come play for us in ’09 was selfish- he wanted to rub some victories over Green Bay in their face, and with a major rival, no less- I truly believe his decision to come back in ’10 was entirely for the team, whether it worked out or not. I believe him when he said (paraphrased) that he found something he had been looking for for some time in our team. The way the coaches and players spoke of him- and he in turn about our coaches and players- showed that. Prima donna or not, creepy old man or not, in the end, success or not, he did everything he could for our team this season. Hell, compare how he treated Aaron Rodgers with the way he treated Joe Webb- that just shows to me that he was for the Vikings rather than for himself, at least in ’10 (and I do believe it was the same for at least the latter half of the ’09 campaign).
Of course- I don’t know, no one can know with that guy, cuz we’re not in his head. But I listen to players like Harvin and Longwell speak about him, and if I’m going to err in my judgement it’s going to be towards them. Personally, I’m going to wait just to make sure he stays retired this time (sorry, can you blame me?), and then I’m going to go and buy a Favre jersey- the first Viking jersey I’ll have ever bought since Culpepper’s. (I gave up because I kept buying jerseys and then the players left.)

It WAS hilarious...
But they should have just stopped it after the first couple of WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
Wow so many unthankful people...
If not for Favre noone would have given a rats ass about the Vikings most of this year and certainly not last year. The Viks got more face time, good or bad, from him then anyone else. Facetime= tv deals, more adverts, more stadium talk, etc…
And last year you guys im sure were all about how wonderful it was to be that close to the Super Bowl.
Kinda shocked some of you are so anti Favre NOW and expect what? A rookie fresh out of college to work? Or god forbid Webb or TJack staying?
How about we stop all the hate for a guy who gave the Viks a chance that no other QB on the team could have.
I dont care wtf he did in his personal life, he never gave less then 100% on that field in purple for 2 years.
Quit hating so much, jeez.
I love the Viks but I dont expect them to be as close to the SB as they were last year for a good 2 years+. Be happy he gave you what you got and quit hating for whatever reasons you think are valid.
Show respect for someone who was good enough to show respect while he wore Purple.
flame away I really dont care lol.
I think every Vikes fan is thankful
for what Favre brought to the Vikes, at least in 2009. He might have come to Minnesota for the sole reason to stick it to Green Bay, but I think he came back in 2010 because of what he found here, which was a good team (at least before the season started, ha ha) that he really liked being around.
Personally, I’ll look back at 2009 as one of my favorite Vikings teams of all time, right up there with the ’98 team and a couple of the Purple People Eater teams.
But it’s time, and I think everyone, even Favre, realizes that. It was a helluva run, but it’s time to move on.
Thanks Brett, and Godspeed.

that is a good point
about the reasons why he came back the past two years, and I must say it seems pretty accurate.

The mods themselves seem more then thrilled hes gone. Which is their opinion and im not saying anyones opinion is not fair game for them. I just see alot of “thank gods” here and I think thats rather cold. If you dont see it then I dont know if youre reading the posts above :) Maybe you should re-read them :) Ive been rather shocked all year reading this page about how much venom was spread towards him when last year he helped take the Viks almost to the SB, which is rather impressive. After a while it kinda gets to a point that its over kill.
Would love less politics and more actual Viks news, but I realize its a public board and theres going to be opinions on it. However I see more spite then thanks for someone who brought alot of positiveness to this team.
Starting to think Childress got less dislike then this lol.
See above
Don’t speak for all the mods here, though. As to the venom, I don’t think it was directed at Favre so much as it was the frustration of the season. He played terribly, and a lot of the criticism was warranted. When you add the Sterger and the masseuse controversies, there was a lot to bitch about.

first off, so sorry my other reply didnt line up right, newb mistake :)
2nd, i agree 100% he should retire.
As far as the Sterger thing goes, sorry but the venom is directed to the wrong person there. But I admit im partial as a Favre fan.
His play was effected by the horrible play of others. As a QB he takes the brunt, and thats not always right. But the team as a whole played horrible this year.
I just think its kinda funny his libedo got more press then others DUIs, arrests etc :)
So long, Brett
I’ve only been a fan for a last few years, but it was a great ride. My favorite memories are the beatdown win with the Jets at undefeated Tennessee, the two Green Bay smashdowns last year, the 49ers miracle throw, the playoff run, the NFC Championship game with the Taints (till the end), & the comeback win over Arizona.
I didn’t really get interested in Favre till the whole thing with Green Bay went down at the end. But, the first half of the season with the Jets and last year with the Vikes were some good times. And while I freely admit I wasn’t a Vikings fan before Favre, I have gotten to know several of the players over the past two years and am intrigued to see how they do in the future under a new coaching staff (and QB hopefully).
Sucks to see Brett go, but even I will agree it is time. Farewell to one of the greatest.
Big salute to #4.
