A Brief Memo To Fans Of The Other 31 NFL Teams

This site, The Daily Norseman, is a website dedicated to Minnesota Vikings football.

I put the word Vikings in bold because this is a concept that some of you seem to have a bit of trouble with.

There, to my knowledge, is no National Football League franchise called the "Queens." Nor is there a National Football League franchise called the "Viqueens." The name of the team is the Minnesota Vikings. Really, it's quite a simple concept.

If, for whatever reason, you have trouble getting your mind around this concept, allow me to give you a little assistance.

If you're a fan of an opposing team and are under the impression that you can walk around here referring to our favorite football team as the "Queens" or the "Viqueens" or the "Biqueens," guess what? I'm kicking you out of the pool.

Why? Because Viking fans. . .which, being a Vikings site, is what we cater do. . .don't have to listen to that kind of garbage about their favorite team. I don't give a damn who you are or which team you cheer for or what your team has accomplished.

In this house. . .the Vikings' house. . .you are a guest. Some of you seem to have forgotten that. You want a warning? There's your warning. You want to use a second grade-level term to talk about Minnesota's NFL franchise? Go to a site that will tolerate that garbage, because this isn't it.

This FanPost was created by a registered user of The Daily Norseman, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of the site. However, since this is a community, that view is no less important.

Accountability

Many folks seem to think the Internet is a huge toilet of unaccountability, where they can crap all over the place like a 1 year old and laugh at the grown-ups expression of disgust.

When we have some degree of accountability, general behavior improves and the people with the emotional maturity of a 1 year old have to either behave like decent members of the group or be removed.

This was long overdue, and very welcome. There’s no point in having moderators unless they do their jobs, and the emotionally immature often don’t understand that they don’t get freedom of speech in a focused venue. They’re held accountable to responsible speech.

I wish all of SBN would step up and take out the trash.

Thanks Chris. Rec’ed.

The issue...

Comes from the fact that on a Vikings site for a Vikings fan to come in and talk Vikings with other Vikings fans, it gets annoying to see non Viking fans speaking childish names about the Vikings in an attempt to annoy the Viking fans, and be obnoxious. For a Vikings fan in a Vikings site to talk about the Packers negatively is common. They’re heated rivals and Vikings fans hate Packers. That being said, I will never travel to The Daily Bree or whatever Packer Fansite is out there and start slamming Fudge Packers around like I’m mashing my head against my keyboard. It’s disrespectful to the people who come here to discuss their favorite team….VIKINGS

Had to get the last one in there since I wasn’t able to fit it in in that longish Packer diatribe…

I think the name calling is stupid and it just makes the people doing it look childish and stupid. I don’t use “viqueens” or any of the other names. That said, lets not sit here and pretend that this is the only team going through it or that your own fans don’t do exactly the same thing.

Ultimately its dumb and annoying but making a post like this shows the people doing it that its working and they are getting under your skin which is just what they want. Just ignore them. We all know the ones who look stupid in all of it…

Interesting

I was aware that there wasn’t a franchise called the Viqueens. However, I have been lead to believe that the team I cheer for were actually called the Fudgepackers and we only call them Packers because it’s shorter. My mistake.

I agree that other people shouldn’t insult, taunt, or rub salt in the wounds of members of a rival fanbase. It’s classless, petty, and immature. Plus, you really look like an asshole. But I would also like to point out that a certain admin will tell people to stop making fun of his team and fellow fans while, in the same breath, insult another fanbase in its entirety, while also passing judgment on how big of an asshole a rival QB is. Frankly, I find the irony in this situation not only obvious, but entertaining as well. This post was certainly needed, not only on this blog but on every SN blog. But those casting stones should really take a look at their own actions before doing so. Hypocrisy doesn’t look good on anyone.

What you have set up is a place where Fans of, say the Bears, can come trying to have conversation with a heated rival, and be completely and hypocritically ridiculed. And they aren’t even allowed to respond in kind. That’s what you want to offer, Chris? Seriously?

I get that you don’t want the disrespect. I agree with the notion. But it’s hypocritical to allow the traffic of garbage to run one way. You can’t demand respect, you earn it. And deliberately creating (and justifying) a hypocritical one way street is NOT the way to earn respect. We have never won a Superbowl yet we are one of the top five most successful teams in terms of wins in our 50 year history. by UnBannedVikingholic on Jan 25, 2011 8:26 PM CST reply actions

Here's the thing.

On a Minnesota Vikings post, ‘Aints’, ‘Cowgirls’, ‘Fudgepackers’, etc. are OK. And on APC or WCG, ‘Viqueens’, etc. are OK. Look, if I go to their forums (which I do lurk from time to time), I don’t get my panties in a bunch when I see it. And I’m also not going to say ‘Fudgepackers’ on APC. That’s THEIR forum.

Likewise, I don’t expect Pack fans to come over here and use ‘Viqueens’. We actually have a few Pack fans who post from time to time- I don’t see them saying it. They’re respectful and I appreciate it, because, as Gonzo points out, they’re guests. Likewise, should I ever post on APC, I will in turn be a guest and mind my manners.

Back when we had ‘5 Good Questions With…’ posts, I felt the same way. It was like a ‘mixer’, if you will- I felt, as hosts, we should avoid the name calling for that particular team in that particular post. It works both ways. And because I feel we should hold ourselves to those standards, they in turn should do the same.

Think of it like being at a bar with a friend who happens to be a fan of another team. Many of us having taken pity on the poor souls who are Bears or Packers fans, and have befriended them in hopes of increasing their humanity. (:P) I don’t say ‘Fudgepackers’ when I’m with my Packer fan buddy watching a game. Sure, we’ll crack our jokes. But we keep it ‘respectful’. Same here. If I’m replying to the post of a Packer fan here, I don’t say ‘Fudgepackers’. If I’m replying a Vikings’ fans’ post here, I might and will.

There’s a reason we have 32 NFL sports blogs. It’s so fans of each team can have their own home, to use 31 derogatory names without hearing the one they don’t want to hear. Each blog has that right and ours should be no different.

And Mr. Gates is therefore entirely not only within his right, but really fulfilling a RESPONSIBILITY, in ensuring that.

by Maineviking on Jan 28, 2011 9:50 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with this...

Or at least the main point, if not all the rhetoric used to get there. In 2009 when APC became a shooting range for Viking (and Favre) fans looking to bait and insult Packer fans, I stopped going to APC most days to avoid it. So I try to save all my bitterest vitriol for venting on APC (which has occasionally then been cut and pasted into threads over here by others who took “manners” for “hypocrisy”, for you fans of irony). Asking people to mind their manners when they’re visiting a rival’s fansite seems pretty fair to me.

Also, resorting to phrases like Fudge Packers and ViQueens really just proves you’re a moron. And possibly a hate filled bigot to boot.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jan 28, 2011 6:38 AM CST reply actions

lol

what an ironic comment from one of the primary guys who ridiculed me over at APC no matter how respectfully I posted there — and then made up posts that I supposedly made when I called him on mischaracterizing me, and answered with response when I linked to the search page of all my posts to that point and asked him to show me just one where I was doing what claimed I did “all the time” — and them when I permanently stopped posting at APC about a year ago, could not resist the urge to troll me over here and make non-sequitor replies to many of my posts last season with comments like “haven’t you changed what team you’re rooting for yet?”

What irony. Look in the mirror TSSC. You were a major contributor to crating that toxic, ugly environment. Not a victim of it. If you were a victim of it, then you apparently are one in the sense of “two wrongs make a right” — you didn’t like how others treated you, so in response you lumped all people who had similiar POVs to the people you felt injured by and dished out to all of them out the same bad irresponsible venom that you denounce them for utilizing, and even escalating the venom (lol, even in this post youequate using mocking nicknames to being a “hate filled bigot.” Yeah the nicknames are childish I agree, but … puhlease. You triviliaze real bigotry and hate with disproportionate responses like that.) . How ironic.

You're a bitter, bitter man, puddn.

The conversations you’re referring to went both ways. I don’t care for you, and I don’t get the impression that you care for me all that much either. And that’s fine. I’m willing to admit (as I have before) that I didn’t always handle myself well (though if you think that the comments I made you found offensive were “real bigotry”, I think you’re woefully misinformed.) How about you, puddn? Or are you always right, always on the high road, at least from your perspective?

I'm just ...

… tired of this. I will never get how this ugly minority of Packer fans hate Favre because he wanted to keep playing, wanted to change his mind, wanted to take another shot (or 2 or 3) at the ring. So I frankly wish that you and your bile would now just go away, along with the man you are directing it at? How long All of these urges are very human, very normal things. Maybe they are not admirable, but neither are they qualifications for demonization. Yeah he thought a lot of himself, but … didn’t 2007 and 2009 prove that his self opinion was not all that misplaced? But even if it didn’t, there still is not real justification for the violence of hatred you have shown against the man.

The most fascinating thing about this situation is that this bitter minority of Packer fans — seriously dude, Packer fans who think like you are a small, small minority in the population I encounter in everyday life, it’s only in small, self-selecting “niche groups” like Acme that I ever see you in any concentration — this bitter minority of Packer fans actually hate Favre MORE than your average NFL fan. Yeah, lots of NFL fans are tired of & annoyed with the retirement stuff, and I suppose there are many turned off by the texting stuff too, but all that is just annoyance for most, the real intense bitter all-consuming hatred comes from the Packer fan base. And it ain’t because homo sapiens magically think and act differently for living in the state of Wisconsin. No, you hate him more because he played for you because he exceled for you for so long. Am I the only one who finds that attitude … well, weird?

To answer my own question: no I am not. I’ve showed some of the stuff that has been posted her & at Acme by the likes of you to some friends who are committed Packer fans, who did not cheer Favre after he left (well at least not after he left Jets and went to VIkings) and … well they don’t get it either. I mean they get not cheering him any more, they get not caring about him any more, but they don’t get the sheer intenisty of the venom. Even they think that some of you have some serious issues for getting this wrapped up in hatred becasue a guy just wanted to keep playing, and didn’t take a professional sports rivalry as serious as his fans did (news flash: NO PROFESSIONAL athlete takes rivalries as serious as you).

What an irony that you see me as the bitter one of the two of us. It’s ironic that you mock someone like R4F for hating on the current Packers QB, while you hate on the previous QB. To someone like me, who has no issue with either one & enjoys watching them both play, you guys appear to have more in common with each other than I think you know. You both are consumed by anger about relatively minor flaws in one or the other of two professional athletes, way out of proportion to the nature of the flaws. I am neither on a high road or a low road. I am just standing on a plain old middle road (neither spurning Favre nor spurning the team he left) … just standing there bewildered about why guys like you and R4F had to go down such extreme roeads. I just will never get it.

I also agree with this post

The only reason you use the term “Viqueen” is to create conflict. You can do that on other sites…why should we put up with it?

+100 and a huge rec

Thank you Chris for this. Too much of the trolls negative manners has been tolerated and this is an excellent reminder. We know and respect the opinion of a lot of opposing team fans who visit this site. It’s the other 1% who show no respect when they are on our board that I can’t stand. This is definitely due and Thank you again. Now, let’s discuss OUR Vikings! SKOL Vikings!

The two or three intelligent Packer fans that actually contribute something meaningful to this site have nothing to worry about.

Thank's for comming over j-man

Pretty spot on in your analysis with what I think as well. I will say that the only ’’old’’ guy on our line is Pat Williams and he has seen less and less playing time as the season progresses. I think our d-line is fine…it is just that they are build to play with the lead. If you were to look at stats from 2009 (when we had a LOT of games wrapped up by the 3rd quarter), its amazing the difference you get with this year (when we were either in dog fights all game or blown out a couple times). Bottom line is if this offense puts up 24 or so points next year, the D will be fine. Especially when we get 2/3 of our secondary back from injury.
