Minnesota Vikings Defensive End Everson Griffen Tased, Arrested In Los Angeles
EDIT: According to TMZ, thanks to an e-mail that somebody felt compelled to send straight to my inbox, this is the second time that Griffen has been arrested this week. Apparently he was arrested in Hollywood on Friday and booked for being drunk in public. He was released on Saturday. Wonderful.
Ahhhhhhh, now this is the sort of off-season news we're more accustomed to making in Minnesota, isn't it?
Everson Griffen, a defensive end selected by the Vikings in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, was tased and arrested this afternoon in Los Angeles for assaulting an officer at a traffic stop near the Southern Cal campus. According to The Daily Trojan,
Police officers were performing a traffic stop at the intersection of 30th and Hoover Streets when they pulled Griffen over. He did not have an I.D. on him and became aggressive when questioned by officers, according to an LAPD spokesperson. Griffen attempted to run away and then assaulted one of the officers who was pursuing him. The officers tased Griffen, then arrested him on a charge of felony battery.
With a slightly faster 40-time, he may have gotten away.
It's going to be interesting to see how this shakes out with the Vikings' roster, though. . .Coach Leslie Frazier has been favorably compared to Tony Dungy when it comes to matters of character and things of that nature with his players, and there's no way in hell that Dungy would tolerate something like this on his team. Absolutely, positively no way. With this situation with Griffen, along with Brian Robison and Ray Edwards both looking at possible free agency, this may move defensive end up the Vikings' draft/off-season priority list.
But yes. . .after the season we just went through, this may be a sign that things are getting back to normal in Minnesota.
And that's really, really sad.

Oh man
I was really high on him, now he may be on the way out. Good thing is this draft is deep at DE.
Son of a B***h
God, I was just reading something earlier today about how the staff thought Griffen was developing nicely and could be the starter next year. Why the hell do these damn pre-Madonnas think they’re above the law. I had high hopes for Griffen; he has a lot of talent when he actually just buckles down and plays the game. It’s gonna take a lot for him to get back in the good graces of the coaching staff. Maybe we should send Mike Singletary over to hang out with him for a couple weeks, would certainly do more to rehabilitate than a stint in prison.
I know this is going to annoy you,
but it’s something that I have to do. It’s prima donna, not pre-Madonna. Sorry for being an ass.

Don't worry about it
I didn’t really know. I was kinda just typing and not focusing on grammar or anything. It’s crap like Griffen that gives a bad name to an organization.

Whenever I see your name, I think of a Mel Brooks/ Jared Allen mixture. He’d be the most hilarious, intimidating, Jewish DE in the NFL.

And...
“I didn’t know how many of them it would take to kick my a$$…. but I knew how many they were going to use!”.
While I wouldn't "condone" his behavior toward the police,
it is certainly possible that the confrontation had racial undertones. Was he actually violating a traffic ordinance? Or was he just being a large conspicuous black man in an expensive vehicle? Did he even get a ticket in addition to the criminal charges? It absolutely takes very little noteworthy behavior for a black man to attract police attention in our society. Whether the police were profiling or stereotyping it doesn’t justify Griffin’s response, but it would make it easily understandable in my mind.
Why the fook would he have no ID?!
Dude...

I also dismissed the idea after hearing of his first arrest 2 days earlier.
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you were aware of that when you posted your reply. Still, you could have have been less disrespectful. Or is your mind really that small?
before you have a knee jerk reaction to slam the police. It is an old, tired, stale argument. If I was disrespectful in 3 words, I apologize. Perhaps I should have been as eloquently disrespectful as you were in an entire paragraph towards the thin blue line, those that are willing, every single day, to take the bullets so that we have the privilege to write whatever drivel we would like in relative peace and freedom. Sir.
Apology accepted... despite the sappy melodrama.
I am sure that the officers who arrested Griffen were professional, and yes I should have read more information. My speculation was more a reflection of hope that we didn’t really lose a potential play-maker due to stupidity, and not intended so much as an indictment of law enforcement. Still, the old stale argument as you call it is alive and well too often. If you don’t believe it just ask any black man who you know and respect.
I will.....
if you ask any police officer you know and respect if he/she considers what I referred to as “sappy melodrama.”
The likelihood that racial profiling was not a factor here doesn't negate its existence.
If you honestly deny that it happens then you’re stupid as well as ignorant.
Give him a fair trial, then hang him :)
Really, there’s no excuse for this crap. Either he was high, or he had something on him that would get him trouble, OR he has a cop-phobia.

A. Cooperate
B. Present ALL required documentation

E. A & B only
F. A & D when B becomes impossible
G. C & D only because the police represent the unfairness of the system.

that is quite anoying
As a police officer, I cant tell you how annoying that is. People thinking just because they think they are all high an mighty, that they are above the law. That attitude really gets on my nerves.
Yeah, but it's true
Look at Hollywood celebs
They break the law all the time, quite openly, and rarely do time for it. Charlie Sheen is a case in point. If I had a briefcase full of cocaine and I was partying with 5 porn star prostitutes that I paid $30,000 a pop for the weekend (good work if you can get it!), and got caught, I suspect there’s a good chance I may have to go straight to jail, without passing GO. Charlie goes to rehab for a month. And he’s probably not even a Viking fan, WTFIUWT?!?!

His talent got him drafted
And now his immaturity will get him cut.
The short and undistinguished career of Everson Griffen.
He is not getting cut. Come on man,
Would you cut him knowing that Edwards & Robison could be gone?
The young man made a mistake. Public drunkeness is not as bad as a DUI.
I wonder what some cats would have to say about Jared Allen and his 2 DUIs had he been on the team when he got those?
Hmmm ….
The dude is a young man. He will be alright. He will be fined and suspended MAYBE.
The final actual charge against him has not been entered into a court of law so Goodell and the NFL cannot decide on any league punishment.
Let’s wait and see what happens.
Still, I do not care who you are, getting tasered has got to hurt.
The popo is quick to taser the big dudes that is for sure. Can’t really blame them though.
The final actual charge against him has not been entered into a court of law so Goodell and the NFL cannot decide on any league punishment.
Not necessary. He doesn’t have to break the law in order to be punished by the NFL :) . Hell, Favre got financially punished for not cooperating with an NFL investigation, Everson didn’t cooperate with the cops, lol.
On a side note…. I have a list of people that, Come the Revolution, I’m going to taser. Repeatedly. Looking forward to that :)

I’m guessing 2 games, assuming of course that he is actually on an NFL roster next season (or whenever they next play regular-season games). In order for all this to happen he will need to do and say all the right things.
he SHOULD be cut, plain and simple
The young man made a mistake. Public drunkeness is not as bad as a DUI.
…did you miss the part about evading police and assaulting an officer?? as far as i’m concerned, that’s grounds for being released. if it was Jared Allen, i’d say the same thing.
if it was just the public drunkenness, it wouldn’t be that big a deal — like AP’s speeding tickets. whatever.
but a felony such as this, on top of a previous arrest only days before?? forget it. E. Griffen is replaceable.
Then why the hell is McKinnie still on the team?
One would think he’s had more than enough chances.
The answer is because on-field talent outweighs off-field behavior (or at least it should).
If you cut every person who isn’t Jesus in their personal life, then you’ll be down to a one man team. (Granted, I’d love to see Jesus versus 11 other players. Bet he’d win.)
not quite apples and oranges, but different nonetheless.
McKinnie was involved in a brawl and resisted arrest without violence. Griffen evaded police and assaulted an officer. not to downplay McKinnie’s battery charge, but there is still a distinction there.
i think McKinnie does his share of philanthropic events, as well…pretty sure those aren’t court appointed. =)
If you cut every person who isn’t Jesus in their personal life, then you’ll be down to a one man team.
that’s a stretch. certainly plenty of players have their faults, but not every player commits a felony.
Griffen’s arrest displays immaturity and irresponsibility. that’s not the type of behavior one likes to see in a young player.
I'll agree that this kind of upsets me
but really, we don’t know the ‘degree’ of assault. As far as I know, touching an officer, or even spitting on them, is considered assault. There might not have been any real violence at all. I doubt Griffen was throwing punches at the police. He was probably just resisting cuffs being put on him after he stupidly ran away.
If that One Man is Purple Jesus, we got a shot at winning :)

rj-b, you are quick to judge the brother I see
Let’s wait and see what he is actually found guilty of.
So he panicked and ran. Big deal. It was stupid for sure but he never was accused of being too smart. The assault part was that the officer claimed he grabbed his groin. I cannot say why or when he did that but maybe it was after he was tasered and he was reaching out trying to get up/
I will wait until the dust settles before I say CUT HIM.
You do not cut valuable 4th round picks because they are dumb and immature. Not yet.
The Vikings have made an investment in him and I am sure they will do their due diligence before coming to a rash decision.
good grief...
yeah, pardon if i’m a bit quick to judge a person who was arrested once, then days later ran away from police and assaulted an officer. allegedly.
it’s alright to judge people for their actions. Big Ben wasn’t found guilty of anything, but i still judge him for putting himself in that situation. in this case, people don’t just run from police without reason. ‘panicking’ is not a valid motive. you have a pattern of behavior in the span of a week…if he’s given a second chance, he’s on a short friggin’ leash.
bottom line, i’m inclined to believe police reports more often than not. perhaps my opinion is ‘rash’, but the alleged behavior is impossible to defend.
You're getting stuck on the assault part
Like I said above, it doesn’t mean he got violent with them. The cop was probably miffed that Griffen tried to run, and so he nailed him with whatever he could.
b/c the assault part is a pretty big deal
he grabbed the cop’s crotch who was trying to subdue him. not a punch to the face, but it’s still an attempt to flee. sure, there are lots of questions to be answered (why did he get pulled over?? why did he have an invalid driver’s license?? et al.), but this appears to be pretty clear cut with the details we already have.
if this was a Packer, i’m sure you guys would be laughing and saying he should be in jail. don’t let the homer in you defend an action like this.
We do not know when he actually grabbed the officer, do we?
Could have been after he was tasered.
I mean how many officers will wrestle with a 6-3 273 man?
I don’t know for sure but maybe he reached out after he was tasered?
Like I said, it is too early to judge the young man.
He was stupid for sure but he is not a criminal by far. Just did something dumb while drinking.
From what I read,
the alleged junk-grab occurred before he was tasered.
"how many officers will wrestle with a 6-3 273 man?"
lots of them. ‘protect and serve’, not ‘protect and serve…unless the guy is really, really big’.
Allegedly grabbed it
And Idk about jail. I mean, he obviously deserves to get punished. Running was about the dumbest thing he could have done. He didn’t even get far from what I’ve read. Why even bother? But in any case, we don’t know for sure what happened, if it was a malicious crotch grab, or an incidental grab, or even a fictitious one. So I am reserving judgement on what his punishment should be.
At least in the terms of the law. For the team… well, he needs SOMETHING. He probably won’t be cut, but… I don’t know. Hopefully Frazier can come up with something to get him to cut this crap out, if the veterans don’t do it for him.
again, i have no reason to distrust a police report
i’ll give the police the benefit of the doubt — doesn’t mean they’re infallible, but if an individual is running from a cop and gets tackled, i find it hard to believe a crotch grab was incidental or fictitious.
but i’m also very against VY becoming a Viking because of his immaturity and off-the-field issues. running a tight team with responsible players is the first step to consistency and success.
You said it
running a tight team with responsible players is the first step to consistency and success.
I agree with nearly everything you’ve said about this incident. The police are not infallible and are not above suspicion but we have to give them the benefit of the doubt unless proven otherwise.

Innocent until proven guilty
In LA, there have been cases over the years in which the Police were violating the rights of citizens, including young black males.
That said, he has been charged with a felony. If he is found guilty after a trial, or if he plea bargains, he will probably be in prison next season, not in the NFL.
Best wishes to Everson Griffen and his future. I hope he has one.
charged with assaulting an officer
Forget the public drunkenness matter. Assaulting a public officer is a felony. That means he potentially could be serving years in prison.
I don’t care what anyone was drinking or how much. You can’t assault an officer.
Once again, though, Everson Griffen is innocent until proven guilty.
I don't think he'll do time
Randy Moss got caught with Marijuana and ran over a cop and he didn’t do time. I don’t think Everson Griffen will. Obviously we don’t know all the facts about the case, so we don’t know the severity of the case, but I have a feeling he won’t do time for this. I’m thinking he’ll take a plea bargain with probation and some community service.
I don’t care what anyone was drinking or how much. You can’t assault an officer.
What if the officer initiated the assault on you? Are you just supposed to take it?
Just sayin’.
Depends
Is it your fault the officer initiated the assault? If you are being belligerent and are showing signs of being a threat… well, yea.
Otherwise… actually still yea. If it’s not your fault, you sue. Life sucks like that.
You always have the right to self-defense, but keep in mind you don’t want to end up with allegations coming at you.
I guess we’ll see what Griffen does to defend himself legally.

Crotch Grab
If the cop initiated a groin-grabbing incident…. well… perhaps that’s why they dropped the felony charge. Yet it does seem to raise some questions.
Who went after who’s groin first? We won’t ask why, we will assume there was a legitimate reason for this. Hmm… so, did Everson take off running before they caught him, or afterwards? This could be salient.
Has Favre been notified of this? What’s his opinion?

good news
As per Zulgad’s Twitter, Griffen will not be charged with a felony. They are considering whether to charge him with a misdemeanor. No decision yet.
I really hope this young man gets his life in order, and regardless of the outcome of this case, steers his life in the right direction. Regardless of his future in football or with the Vikings, I hope Everson Griffen can grow past this current experience.
what a damn shame...cut him.
welp, time to look at the DE crop in the draft, after all…
completely unacceptable. kid had promise and he pissed it away. should be an easy decision for Frazier, esp considering this will be his first major ‘reprimand’ as HC.
What is cutting going to do?
Get him signed by the Patriots with a staff (which i think ours will) that will get his act together and make him an elite DE potentially, and leave us regretting it because we had to let Ray or Robison go? uh Lets not do that YET! Calm down man, you just don’t cut people because their young and make mistakes.

Pats probably wouldn't put up with that kind of behavior
so why should we??
whatever happens, Frazier will be sending a message to the team — what will that message be?? screw up big time and we’ll give you a little slack??
iron fist, man. Frazier can still be a nurturing coach, but he also needs to show that such behavior will not be tolerated. it’s possible EG goes elsewhere and lights up, but it’s just as likely this behavior continues. we don’t need that on our squad.
i love how everyone is giving him a pass because he’s “young” and “made a mistake”. gimme a break, he FLED from POLICE…!! that’s a pretty big red flag in itself — add to that an arrest three days prior and [allegedly] assaulting an officer = hit the road.
I'm assuming you're a cop,
or wants to be one day? Because that is the point-of-view your speaking of, a COP. If you was a real good MENTOR or anything else of that nature you wouldn’t let this SLIDE but you would work on it with that person and help things get better. You just don’t CUT them and let their life go into disaster, you never know how their childhood or anything was for their sort of behavior. not a cop, just someone who appreciates people who play by the rules
i’m alright with mentoring people, but ultimately it’s up to the individual. i suppose it’s just coincidence he was arrested twice in three days…?? the odds of his life going into disaster after being cut are quite slim — he’ll get his second chance, just on another squad.
flip the tables — if EG was cut from another team, would you want the Vikes to pick him up?? mentor him?? roll the dice on a troubled kid who might throw away his talent on another stupid stunt??
i’d love to be proven wrong, i simply don’t think, in this case, it’s worth the effort or the risk. plenty of other talented young players out there with accountability and without the baggage.
What to say, what to do
I mean, if this is his second arrest this week, is it worth it to work on him, try to find out what his issue’s are and get the kid calmed down? Yes, he does seem to have alot of talent, but so did Lawrence Phillips, Ryan Leaf and to a lesser but more of a headcase scenario, Vince Young. All had talent or still do, but it seems nothing was able to get them out of the immaturity or issues they had/have. So, is it worth it to try and work on the kid? Or maybe since Frazier and Dungy are friends, perhaps have Dungy work with the kid this offseason on his head?
However, given the issues of above mentioned players as well as issues we’ve had in the past, such as the Love Boat and others like Dimitrus Underwood, is it even worth it to bother? Would we be better off cutting our loses now instead of possibly being further embarrassed later on?
I would say if he could somehow be showen the “light” by Dungy or someone of the like, then it is worth it. But if the kid keeps F’ing up over the next few months, cut him and move on before it does get worse.

this is the case of a guy with some money, and nothing to do in the off-season, so he goes back to California to party like he did back in college, and gets out of control. You could call it a rookie mistake, if you wanted. One of the dumbest ones I’ve heard of though.

Doubtful
They like the way he’s looked, they just drafted him last year, and this is the first time he’s gotten in trouble on this team. If they cut him, some other team will just snap him up anyway. If he beats the case in court, I actually don’t see anything happening to him. Frazier will sick the vets on him though. Hopefully Pat Williams will be able to knock some sense into his head.
Pat Williams is leaving
Pat recently said that he thinks there will be a long retooling process and he wants to go to a contender. He won’t be a Viking next year. However, we can now sic Mike Singletary on him instead :)

Griffen’s recent display of idiocy is weak sauce in comparison, so it won’t hurt the Vikings “outstanding” reputation in this department : )
Please tell me at least...
… that it took several Taser shots to get him down.
Or maybe that he went all Keith Millard and claimed his arms were stronger than the cops guns and tasers.
I’m ok with it then.
That video is a good example of the problem with tazing but not relevant to this discussion
5 cops and scrawny college boy and they taze him? come on man!

Tasing as a Recreational Sport
Maybe they just like watching people twitch.
Or it’s like when the cowboy shoots bullets at some yokel’s feet and tells him to dance. Instead, they use a taser and get a cross between The Robot and breakdancing.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
Looks like some of you are severely premature

He is not going to face felony charges.
I am sure that may disappoint some.
Why am I not surprised that he is not going to face these charges yet some of you were going to sell him down the river?
He is a kid. He did not hurt no one and he was not driving drunk. He just did not have his license.
All we need him to do is rush the QB and to not get pulled over by the offensive tackle for speeding! :)
I was a kid too
who did stupid things, but nothing that got me arrested, no matter how bored I was
New coach, new coaching staff, new starting QB. All we need now is a new stadium and all will be well in 2011.

He said don't hand me no lies, and keep your hands to yourself
