Ramsey County Residents Won't Vote on Stadium Sales Tax
Just as fears have been ramping up that the Minnesota Vikings were going to be L.A.-bound, the Vikings and their fans get some much-needed good news. Tuesday night the Ramsey County Charter Commission met to listen to public opinion regarding the proposed Vikings stadium in Arden Hills, then the panel rejected putting the proposed sales tax increase before voters on the 2012 ballot. This is good news to the Vikings and stadium supporters had voiced concern that putting the proposed sales tax increase to a voter referendum would delay the project and add significantly to its cost. But, lest the team and stadium advocates breathe too easily, the results of the Metropolitan Council's stadium site feasibility study commissioned by Governor Mark Dayton will be available Wednesday.
*Note: After publishing this I saw that site member Premier Cherdenko also posted a FanShot about this. His FanShot links to a much more detailed article. Check it out.

Sounds like a true jaded vikes fan lol.
Something good happens and first reaction is: “Crap, they did something good, now what are they going to to do to undo the good?”

It really is hard not to think that way about stadium stuff...
I mean, the Vikings have only been trying to get a new stadium for a decade. But this is definitely some good news for stadium supporters. I think if we’re going to have that “what next?” moment it will be from the site feasibility report that the Met Council presented to the Vikings today. The Met Council is a group that isn’t elected and is accountable only to the governor. In the past they’ve shown a strong bias toward advocating high-density housing and public transportation—goals that don’t seem to mesh with a suburban stadium.

I don't know about you, but I really needed some good news.
It was getting difficult to wind myself up to write about the stadium situation.

Definitely
There has been so much time in between meetings, and all of the Star Trib articles and on top of that you have all the speculation on talk radio. It’s been hard to stay positive about this thing. I was very worried it would go to a referendum.
by SeventhViking on Oct 12, 2011 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions
Me too
And if it went to a referendum, well, I didn’t like the chances of it getting passed. It was interesting how angry people were about the tax, as if it was a huge amount instead of 5 cents for every $10 spent. I got the feeling that the facts wouldn’t matter, people had just had enough of Minnesota’s taxes. Seems to me that if they want to get worked up about something, there’s the tax on gasoline that was sold to voters as something to help roads, but a portion of that money is diverted for public transportation. That’s something to get pissy about because it was misleading. But the Vikings are a much better target for ire than the transportation taxes are.

Well that clears the Ramsey and Viking contributions...
all that is left is the previously promised $300M. We’ll see if it gets done or not.
by Jepp The Viking on Oct 12, 2011 10:04 AM CDT reply actions
I maintain...
That those contributions should be reversed. The state should be paying the $350 million and Ramsey County should be paying the $300 million. But that train has sailed.

Now you have to wonder
what Koch and Zellers will do, as they came out in support of a referendum.

pretty much.
Good news though!

SKOL VIKINGS!
I wonder if we are going to see Koch and Zellers do their version of Ginger Rogers.
Ginger Rogers said she had the harder job because she did everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in heels. Koch and Zellers better strap on those heels because they’re about to start dancing backwards.

Finally, some great news!
It’s about time that we finally get to hear some great news regarding the Vikings in general, (other then their first win of the season against Arizona)…especially regarding the new stadium issue. I really hope that there’s no “monkey wrench” thrown into the mix of this great news, but it’s been seeming like someone or a group of “someones” have always been trying to set up a roadblock or two in front of this new vikings stadium issue/proposal. Don’t they, whoever “they” are, realize that this is a gigantic opportunity to not only keep our beloved Vikings here in Minnesota, but also and more importantly, the construction of this new stadium will create literally thousands of jobs for those that have been out of work, especially those within the construction/contracting industries!? What this is truly all about, besides keeping the Vikes here in MN, is about Jobs! Jobs! and more Jobs! Again, great news on the stadium front, let’s just all hope that it’s smooth sailing from here on out.
Preach it!
Of course you’re preaching to choir here at DN :) Seems like a vocal portion of Ramsey County voters just hit that “enough is enough” point when they heard about the proposed sales tax increase. I understand, it’s a crap economic time and the idea of getting tapped for any more taxes makes people angry. And I truly believe that that the state of Minnesota should be paying a larger amount to this project than Ramsey County. That said, it just makes sense for the state to keep the Vikings and build a new stadium. Keeping the Vikings means keeping tax revenue (income, sales tax, etc.) in the state and building a new stadium means creating construction jobs.

Reserved section in Bud Grant Field
Not to get ahead of ourselves but I think we should have 1 section in our new stadium (Valhala too over the top?? yeah I thought so) reserved for the people who didn’t want to help build it – or think the Metrodome is still ok. This section will re-create the fan experience at HHH with the same seats, mezzanine, wonderful food options, and horrible restrooms with no visibility to new awesome megatron scoreboard.
So exciting!!!
I think that would be fair. . .
If those people didn’t pay just as much (or more depending on if your a Ramsey County resident) as you did for it.
But are they really paying for it?
I thought the initial plan was to make the budget money come from increased taxes on things like Vikings memorabilia and stadium tickets? I love the Vikes but I always feel a bit awkward wanting them to stay when I live just across the border in Iowa and don’t face any of the budget problems of having them stay. But hey I make a visit or two to the Metrodome still.
The state and county contributions breakdown like this...
The state of Minnesota’s contribution ($300 million) to the stadium comes from a professional sports memorabilia tax, taxes on luxury suites in a new Vikings stadium, and from Vikings scratch game tickets.
Ramsey County’s $350 million stadium contribution comes from the .5% sales tax increase throughout the county.

Funny you should say that...
Because at the Minnesota State Fair some of the women’s restrooms had posters advertising Vikings games on the inside of the stall doors. Surprising just how much it will throw you off to have E.J. Henderson, Steve Hutchinson, Jared Allen, and Percy Harvin all staring you down while you’re trying to pee.

I have a feeling..much like the Target Field..
that once (if) this gets done you’ll be seeing that consecutive sellout streak continue on into the foreseeable future. I’d bet season tickets would sell out quick too.

You may be right.
The Vikings have been vocal about wanting to make the fans’ game day experience great. That’s why they want room for tailgating and a team museum and things like that. They don’t want it to just be about how the team is doing on the field for four quarters, but about the entire experience of spending the whole day at the stadium having fun.
I like the concept, it kind of reminds me of going to my college’s basketball games. Our team sucked. Seriously, they almost always got their asses handed to them—they were just that bad. But we had so much fun at the games making noise and cheering that, despite how awful our team was, there was always a crowd there for the games. It was about the whole experience and not just the action on the court.

I'm all for that.
It will be interesting to find out more about the Met Council’s site feasibility study. If that is done and it hasn’t uncovered anything crazy bad, then I think most of the significant hold-ups will be out of the way. But I’m going to keep my fingers crossed for good luck for just a bit longer.

As one of those whiny Ramsey County residents...
Just know that I’m giving you a stern look through my monocle.
Vikings fans shouldn’t be too cranked at the Ramsey County residents who have wanted the proposed tax increase to be put on the 2012 ballot. It’s a tough economic time and, for a lot of people, hearing all the misleading info about the stadium proposals in the news and finding that funding would be obtained through a proposed sales tax increase was just the last straw—regardless of the amount.

Vikes New Stadium
I read that the cost per person would be approximately $50 per person! I now live in southern CA and want the Vikes to stay in MN, my home state. I will be the first to send the state a check for $50 if that is what it will take to get this Stadium started.
Come on MN, its a no brainer, get the shovels going….
I would hope...
That the Vikings would have something set up so people can donate to the stadium if they want to. I’ll forward the question on to the Vikings PR people who I bug on a regular basis. Considering they spend a lot of time in meetings where people are yelling at them for wanting a new stadium, questions regarding how people can voluntarily donate to the stadium would probably be a nice change.

we could buy a brick or something
works down at Como Zoo… place stays open on donations. People that give big donations get bricks with their names next to the duck pond.
Wouldn’t be cool to see a SKOL GIRL or Admiral BigGun or even a Big-Honking DAILY NORSEMAN brick (hint hint) on game day when walking on the path from the tailgate areas to the glorious new purple shrine front gates.
If i close my eyes and concentrate, i can see it … I can even smell the grilling. great…now i’m hungry.
