Headed For The Future

"We're headed for the future and the future's now!" (Neil Diamond).

No more apt words could be used to describe the likely course of the 2011 Minnesota Vikings season.

Last night in Chicago, the Vikes lost to the Bears in all the familiar formats.  The offense was out of sync...

We couldn't tackle worth a darn...

And the offensive line was horrid beyond all possible previously held belief (I sometimes think that if Julius Peppers played every game against us, he would make Michael Strahan's sack record look like shooting fish in a bucket)...

Then, our defense couldn't contain the speedy little Bears receivers...

And Devin Hester put the final touches on the rout...

Those are things all Vikings fans have seen against the Bears in recent years.

The one difference this time?  The debut of Christian Ponder.

From the little we got to see of Ponder, he looked okay.  His throws were accurate, he didn't seemed overwhelmed, and he showed some nice mobility (of course, such things are needed when the o-line opens up like the Red Sea on nearly every play).  The game was so out of hand at that point that a comeback victory was out of the question, but I still was impressed (more so than Joe Webb last year).

So, as we lick our wounds and prepare for another interesting divisional matchup when GB comes to town, I can only hope that the McNabb Experiment has come to an end.  For better or worse, we need to know what Ponder can bring to the table, and we need to know NOW before any more time is lost.

Oh yeah, and Ponder is a dead-ringer for Joe Mauer (as well as sharing his number), something I had not noticed until last night.  Unbelievable!
