Vikings @ Chiefs Fourth Quarter Thread

KANSAS CITY, MO - OCTOBER 02: Quarterback Donovan McNabb #5 of the Minnesota Vikings is hit by Tyson Jackson #94 and Tamba Hali #91 of the Kansas City Chiefs as he scrambles during the game on October 2, 2011 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

Wow, this sure looks like a battle of 0-3 teams doesn't it?

If you have Ryan Succop on your team, you're probably thrilled. He hit his fourth and fifth field goals of the game, the first of which from 54 yards, as he has accounted for all 15 of Kansas City's points today. Ryan Longwell added a field goal on the Vikings' first drive of the half, bringing the grand total of second half points for Minnesota this season to...nine. Besides that opening drive, the Vikings offense continued their usual second half disappearing act.

Follow along as we see if the Vikings can pull their heads out of their collective asses and come back for a much-needed victory.

The problem, obvious to all, is the offense. No one believes in McNabb other than Frazier and McNabb.

He has to go (McNabb) if the Vikings lose this game. At 0-4 this team needs a chance to improve at all positions. And McNabb isn’t going to get better. Ponder can. Webb can, Arcenauex can. Booker is better than Toby. Jaramca should play until he’s injured.

My two cents for now.

With the O-line as is, it’ll be nice to have a decent back-up option. If he does well, and Luck is as good as advertised, you can trade him then. Right now, there won’t really be a big market for Ponder.

Wasted a #12 pick on a back-up QB to Andrew Luck

Reduce turnovers, reduce personal fouls, shoot better, win.

by PoohRubio on Oct 2, 2011 2:59 PM CDT reply actions

It wasn't a wasted pick

If they actually got Luck, Ponder could be traded to a team that loses out on a qB in the 2012 draft. Probably have to settle for a late first or second round pick, but still not a total waste.

by rovibe on Oct 2, 2011 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Why would somebody want Ponder already?

We wouldn’t get a late 1st rounder at all. Best we’d probably get is a 2nd, if we’re lucky. Everyone else thought he was a stretch in the 1st round. They should just play him now to see how good or bad he is. Maybe we pull a Carolina and draft a QB high two years in a row. Newton’s working out well for them.

by REVENGE4KLUWE on Oct 2, 2011 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

If we are bad enough to get the #1 pick and Luck

trading Ponder for a 2nd would not be a bad deal.

by UGAVike on Oct 2, 2011 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't see why we can't keep both

See which is better, play him. Eventually we can try to trade the other one, but it doesn’t have to be immediately. Why put all your eggs in one basket?

by REVENGE4KLUWE on Oct 2, 2011 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree...

The Redskins are playing well enough to consider themselves in with a chance to have a 1st round pick in 2012 in the 20s and were heavily rumoured to be be where Ponder would end up had the Vikings not selected him. The rated him above Gabbert and just behind Locker. I think that they would pull the trigger right now on a deal for Ponder.

Saying that, I like Ponder as did many people on here before the draft – there were quite a few comments stating that they hoped the Vikings would take Ponder late in round 1 or in round 2 as he was going to be better than ANY of the other QBs available. So what if we reached for him… if he succeeds then no one will care where he was drafted.

This is why the Vikings need to play Ponder now! That way if they find themselves in a position to draft Luck in next years draft – assuming he doesn’t fall from grace – then they will know what they have in Ponder. If he plays terribly, then we select Luck and see what we can get for Ponder. If he plays outstanding football – then we won’t be in a position to select Luck anyway. Even if we continue to lose, but Ponder shows great potential, then the Vikings can select Luck, and probably command a quality player or draft choice in trade for Ponder.

We won’t know unless we play him and bench McNabb…

by blowfishes on Oct 3, 2011 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Why do they even show that playoff stat?

We all know this team has no chance at going to the playoffs. They are an embarrassment.

Vikes will win 1-2 games this year….maybe….Time for changes…I say fire BB, Frazier, and Loadholt…Maybe sit McNabb….Get some playing time for the new guys….Maybe/hopefully people playing that have the guts to finish games without penalties, choking, or throwing dirt balls….

You forgot Gopher hockey. And basketball.

Used to be among the best in the country and has stunk it up for the last 3 years now. Watched sister school UMD win the national championship last year. Having 5 Div 1 hockey schools in Minnesota is diluting the talent.

Gopher basketball has disappointed, even with Tubby’s good name and reputation.

Bah! Let the rain come down—-it will only make the comeback that much more wonderful. Better days are ahead, friends. That much is certain.

Well...

They are well on their way to drafting Luck. Oh wait, only the Vikings can fuck that up.

Nice loss, failures.

by christian220896 on Oct 2, 2011 3:00 PM CDT reply actions

They would too

They’ll stick to Ponder and draft some other player instead of Luck.

by REVENGE4KLUWE on Oct 2, 2011 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't get your hopes up----Vikes will not get Lucky.

Because they’re the Vikings. They will be bad enough to draft in the top 10 but just not bad enough to be #1 and take Luck. Not gonna happen.

Childress, Tice, and Red McCombs were clueless, Frazier will be good long term if he doesn’t get fired

Fact: Chilly was an arrogant prick and the players hated him. That’s why he got whacked. Nobody will ever say that about Frazier—-he’s a different cat.

Maybe

Bet there’s a relevant point made that as stupid and rigid Childress was, he did adapt.
We don’t see that in this regime yet.

At this point, there are no playoffs for the Vikings.
Change is required.
Start at QB, and take the shackles off the offense.
Berrian to the bench, becuase effort beats talent 9/10 times.
Berrian doesn’t show the effort.
Jamarca starts and plays every down he’s not hurt.
Tyrell isn’t even a back up Safety.
Move Gerhardt to FB, he’s not a RB.
Move Booker to 2nd string RB, he’s dangerous with the ball in his hands.
More Jenkins/Shanco/Harvin
Play Camarillo, no he’s not a burner, but he catches the ball, basically doing his job.

More change from my pocket.

Disappointing but not unexpected

AP needed 23 carries to get 80 yards. That is all you need to know.

I will confess that I was a defender of Loadholt but I cannot do that any longer.

Please do not draft anymore linemen over 325 lbs and even that may be too much.

The max I would go is 315.

There are just so many positions that need upgrades that it is difficult to place blame on one unit.

Offensive line, wide receiver, safety, even corner back as Cedric is not looking too good.

It is going to be a long year boys!

by MarkSP18 on Oct 2, 2011 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

We will be drafting at the top of each round

Which means we could have 3-4 starters

What we need to do is maybe look to identify free agents as well that we can maybe bring in for 2012

by Voyageur on Oct 2, 2011 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Washington was right

McNabb has no 2min drill…..

i guess it;s time to start …. Wait till next year …..

by VikinginCalifornia on Oct 2, 2011 3:05 PM CDT reply actions

Really, if a team is willing to give you a "starting" QB for nothing

Maybe you should rethink it.
Maybe he’s actually not that good.
Maybe he washed up.
Especially egregious for the Vikings to make this mistake, after the Favre era

This will be a good team some day, some year

I have faith in Frazier, he will be a good coach long term, but it will be painful for the next little while

by sle71r on Oct 2, 2011 3:06 PM CDT reply actions

Hey, at least we saved another team....

From ever signing McNabb to be their starting QB, again.

I was prepared for this from the day they signed that loser so im at peace with this season. I just wish AP didnt have to suffer through it during the very short window of his prime.

Someday we will all look back on this season and laugh.

by alec j on Oct 2, 2011 3:09 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah

he’s probably wishing he didn’t sign that big extension.

Looks like he’ll end up being our Barry Sanders

Do you guys know what we should do?

Have a paper bag design contest. The coolest looking one wins. Think about it, our team is horrible, but we could have some kick-ass looking paper bags on our heads!

by christian220896 on Oct 2, 2011 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

Here we go.

Everyone is jumping on the Luck bandwagon. He’s a product of marketing and wishful thinking like a lot of unproven rookies, including Frazier.

Ponder won the big ones in college and Luck set records but didn’t put his heart into WINNING. Reminds me of the Leaf and Manning situation, where everyone thought that Leaf should go first, but Indianapolis knew that Leaf’s heart wasn’t in winning and took Manning first, while Leaf was a bust.

by liveforadrenaline on Oct 2, 2011 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

what big one did ponder win

Not the ACC not NC he did not win shit

by chuckd@79 on Oct 2, 2011 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

No way

is Luck in the same sentence as Ryan Leaf.

He’s a product of his own excellence and his heart is in the fact that rather than leave as a sophmore he did the same thing as Sam Bradford.

Staying to help your college side make it to and win a Bowl appearance …. where is the lack of heart in that?

by Voyageur on Oct 2, 2011 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Anyone know how many games McNabb needs to start

before we have to give a second 6th round for him?

by Murgo on Oct 2, 2011 3:11 PM CDT reply actions

Dont care, bench him now. save the math for peopel that give a shit.

This team cant afford to throw away draft picks any more for washed up veterans…

by alec j on Oct 2, 2011 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions

We absolutely..

Can’t afford to lose any more draft picks..this team needs to go into full rebuild mode

by MrBungle85 on Oct 2, 2011 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, i dont really understand the Ponder bashing...

Until the guy plays a little shouldnt we have an open mind. He was a winner in college, thats a good sign.

I just want to see him play before we start worrying about next year’s draft.

by alec j on Oct 2, 2011 3:14 PM CDT reply actions

Let the rebuilding begin

You’ll no longer be able to talk about re-tooling, re-stocking, or re-anything other than regretting getting McNabb.

by nmvikesfan on Oct 2, 2011 3:20 PM CDT reply actions

Don't blame Frazier

He did not have any good options for QB. Childress mortgaged our future to win in 2009 & 2010. Now we have to pay the piper. Next year Shank is gone, defense is getting old and needs infusion of youth. O line is below average and best lineman is on the decline. We should trade so of our top players for draft picks. I seem to remember Dallas trading Walker and then winning three SB’s. We are not going to win with an aging core of players, the sooner we admit that the faster we can rebuild.

As for Frazier, remember the current coach of the Pats bombed in Cleveland and they gave up on him too soon. We have to give Frazier at least two years. Look at what Shanahan is doing in DC. Skins were terrible last year but much better this year. Remember Frazier did not have a preseason this year and the personnel problems were ones left to him by Childress.
