(disclaimer: this is being written immediately after the emotional loss to the Packers, that -- for the record -- felt like the Super Bowl, as far as i'm concerned. so please pardon any Bud Light induced rambling.)
i've heard all the arguments about how we need to use our 1st draft pick on OLine -- namely LT. i want to make it very clear that i completely agree with this. but as much as we need to improve our OLine, today's game showed, to me, that we need a legit deep threat more.
as badly as our OLine has been playing, Ponder is clearly capable of either escaping a sack or staying poised and stepping up in the pocket to make a play. the 1st half, as per usual, was great. i think what people will be discussing in the coming days is, as soon as Percy came out of the game, the offense struggled. despite this, Ponder was still able to come through and convert on 3rd down.
now, imagine for a second if Percy was in the game for the second half against the Packers -- i am very confident we would have won. now imagine, along with Percy, we had a legit deep threat opposite Jenkins, and how much that would open the running game for AP (who still managed to run for 175yds). THIS OFFENSE CAN BE ABSOLUTELY EXPLOSIVE with a 1st rd WR like Justin Blackmon, who we will absolutely be in a position to draft, at this point.
like i said, i am not understating the importance of OLine -- but i really think the discussion is going to shift now that we see what a capable QB we have in Ponder, who will need receiving weapons next year (Shiancoe will be gone, but Rudpolph will step in -- but Camarillo will be gone, Berrian gone, etc).
we win with AP, period. so it all depends on your point of view -- do we amp up the running game with a 1st rd LT, or a 1st rd WR??
Poll
Looks like the Vikes will have a Top 10 pick in the 2012 draft... what is the bigger positional need??
